New to the s3 - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I was given an s3 but im a lil confused by it...
1. it didnt have any type of goggle apps loaded into it...ex...gmail, maps, nav
2. it has some Japanese/Chinese apps
3. doesnt have the svoice app
4. when I press the browser it comes up in an asian language..
5. camera looks different then other cameras ive seen on s3's
did i get some bootlegg phone?
The phone accepted a tmobile us sim but its wierd. It says something like the tmobile sim is set as default pull the nav bar to change. So im wondering if i root and flash a custom rom will I get all apps and stuff?

go to Settings - About device -copy down all info about Build Number, Image version, kernel version, etc on a .txt file.
then copy the info on here and we can see what versions of stuff you are running. This info is also in your build.prop file.
you probably will have to Change ROM's at some point...
sounds like, your phone came from Foreign Area and that person just UNLOCKED SIM (meaning they got SIM UNLOCK CODE) which allows anyone's SIM card to work.
either way, once you have a NEW ROM installed, I feel it will all Be Well...
with little knowledge i have, I would
A) Make nandroid backup of what you have (then delete after a few months of good running rom)
B) Use odin to ROOT cell , if not ROOTED (Rooting will ruin warranty, but probably not there anyway)
C) Flash Recovery to TWRP v2.3.3.1 (newest version of best Recovery system)
D) Install JB ROM 4.1.1 STOCK ROM that you like, try it out for a few days b4 you flash a 4.1.2 or 4.2 (so you can compare what works and if you like)
*** I stay away from 4.1.2 + 4.2 (since they are based on OTHER CELL PHONES or ASOP, AKOP, etc)
What happens if you go to Settings - About device - Software Update...
-this is where your OTA (over the air updates) will come from
-the newest OTA 4.1.1 just got added to phones last month (middle of November) from 4.0.4
-it is possible, that this OTA could fix problem, but i wouln't rely on it.

ok, I'll go home tonight and post all info requested. Im on my sensation right now. Im gonna read up how to root etc....do you have any suggestions on which is the best stable rom? Most important i need, battery life, camera, mobile hot spot. Dont get me wrong I need everythign but those are key
i started reading this..is this a good place to start?

the 1st link you posted is the best one for rooting...I followed the post correctly last month and it works fine...
-Be aware that your counter will have 1 on it (NOT 0) cus it's a JB Rom.
-"Triangle Away v2.3.7 .apk" is suppost to reset your counter to 0, and it will on ICS ROM's, not JB Rom's tho
-So if you were to return cell with 0 Counter, you'd have to revert to a older ICS Rom (4.0.4), then run Triangle Away app, then give it to Dealer.
-when you use Odin to install Root66 Rom, it will add just ROOT only (it won't change your Recovery) -that is all it will add, your data will stay the same.
To change recovery...(this is what I did)
A) Download app from Market call "Terminal Emulator" (it's like using ADB commands on cell phone instead of PC).
B) Downloaded TWRP Recovery v2.3.3.1 .img file and rename it to "recovery.img" and then copied it to External SDCard
C) Run Terminal Emulator and enter these commands (Cell has to be ROOTED for su permissions to work)
su
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
D) Check to make sure you have Recovery.
-with cell being off, Use {Volume UP, Home, Power} to load up recovery and check it.
Once rooted and any NON STOCK recovery, you can install any ROM now in your RECOVERY.
I never use others 4.1.1 ROM's, cus they all keep in many programs that I remove.
-here is a HOTSPOT hack (it has instructions on how to do it, I have done them myself and they work great - but it's techy stuff, not download .zips to install)

going from the picture, it looks like your device model is the GT-I9300, the international Galaxy S III.
this is your correct forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1563
follow the guides there, DO NOT follow the T-Mobile root guides or flash T-Mobile ROMs, you will most likely brick your device.
the phone seems real enough to me, looks like it's on stock Android, not the Touchwiz from what i can tell.

Sent From T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 Running CM 10.1

That does not appear to be a real S3. Your baseband looked off so I did a quick search, and it appears you have a GT-I9300 Fei Teng clone. Before you flash ANYTHING to it, you need to do some research so you don't end up with a paperweight.
YouTube unboxing of your phone model
XDA thread on a similar (or possibly the same) phone

Looks like you have a SGS3 GT-19300 MAUI type custom ROM
ROM's Bases are either STOCK, AKOP, CM, or MAUI type.
-It's important to keep your CPUID Handy (very important to have - you posted that info on your 1st post)
-it's important to make a NANDROID backup in a Custom Recovery (even if your current version sux's -at least you can work from it as a platform to get your EVENTUALLY correct Rom)
-it is possible that the Previous Cell Owner put the incorrect ROM type on the SGS3... (Best to take back cover off cell (where battery, SDCARD, and SIM Card go) use another camera to take picture) and research that info) Get Serial Numbers and sequence should match some group
-Custom ROM that was installed also changes the build.prop, so it could say international version GT-19300 only cus ROM installed is that
Do lots of Research!
after some research...
Looks Like you have 1Ghz of ram (not 2 GB Ram like regular SGS3) you can see your Info in Settings (few different spots)
Doesn't look like you have Much support, not many have that cell and tuff to get info on it..
link1
Read this thread - I bet this is your model
Google as much as you can about this Cell, and save links in Folder on PC (as a whole, you will have to make the best out what others have done to make it the best english it can be and usable) sounds like a RARE type cell and not many will have, but someone might post great tips to make the best of it.
after more reserch, Don't use any SGS3 files (it's not a SGS3)..don't do this below....
if it is a GT-19300 type cell and you confirm that to be 100% accurate, then your best bet is to...
Copy and paste your questions on their Q+A Forum and post that pic of your Cell phone Version with them.
They have more experience with your version and can help you better.
stay away from TMobile stuff now.

OP, can you get the model number from under the battery?

OP, if possible, could you post more pictures of your device just to make sure? thanks.

[Q] ROM question for Telus SGH-T989D

I have a simple question and i think ive seen some mention of it, but nothing quite definitive
I want to root my SGSIIX from Telus(989D), and ive figured out that i can follow the same instructions as the T-mobile version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
It suggests a ROM below that was originally posted for the T-mobile ver, is there any T-mobile branding on it visually such as boot screens etc?
Also...
If a ROM works flawlessly on the tmobile version, will it also work flawlessly on the telus version by default. Ive been eyeballing the possibility of Cyanogen or MIUI, and juggernaut...but i wanna make sure EVERYTHING works perfectly after doing so, or if there are certain things that might not work
Thanks! (sorry im rather new to android modding so im trying to learn)
And yes i searched around, but have only seen a few ppl post in threads saying 'it should work', then some say theyve had problems..so thought id make a post!
i have the same questions then you the tutorials i found are for the t-mobile rom
not the telus one but reading other post they are the same rom
but i dont whant to take the risk lol

Same, specially since im new at this!
yes, they are identical software and hardware
i rooted the phone today there is alot of apps in the t-mobile version compare to the telus one I followed the instructions from this page
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1332103
the 4g network was gone could not connect to it only 3g was working
i uninstalled most apps with titanium backup pro but i end restoring to the back up i made from CWR
gonna give it another try when they are going to release a rom that is from telus version of the phone
i hope it helps you
The 4g is broken for me to ...it seems like the modders are only interested in the t-mobile version to, so it looks like even rooting(based on the fact that the rooted rom is also a t-mob) wont even be possible

What do you mean rooting? All you need to do is flash CWM and then the SU package, no need to change any ROM at all.
I rooted my Telus device using the T-Mobile instructions and all was well at home, it stayed on the Telus network and also keep 4G speed.
I went to work with it, where Telus service is very poor, and as soon as I lost Telus it roamed to Rogers and did not try and return to Telus even though I was in an area where Telus signal was good.
In the end I changed the device to wcdma mode only and set the device to manual provider and selected Telus and have had no problems with 4G or not being on Telus...

Do you happen to have a link? I followed a guide on this forum that said the easiest way was to flash the rom!
I rooted my phone, it still said 4G.
When I installed beastMOD it says 3G. But I am definitely getting 4G speeds (20mbps). So.. maybe a bug with the difference in phones?
ughhh
trust me...stick with the telus rom. its actually better code then tmob. newer drivers and less debug code. I tried the tmob and its gawd aweful. if u want goodies...slap a kernel on it then theme it. best way to go imho.
Later

haha, i only know how to follow step by step's for this stuff
i can only hope ppl switch over to the telus code i guess
Im trying to find how to root w/o flashing a rom though

For Telus you don't need to change roms when you root.
I'm running the stock rom on my phone with a modified kernel to allow the phone to run faster and the v6 memory mod as well as removing the clock from notification bar.
Installed Titanium and removed a bunch of the crap that came stock with phone too.

Get the recovery.tar from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315390
Flash that through ODIN (PDA mode in ODIN, Download mode on Phone)
Then, place the SU update (http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-3.0.5-efgh-signed.zip) on the root of the SD card. Reboot to recovery, select install zip from SD Card and select the SU update. Reboot and you're rooted without having to use another ROM.
The reason why you keep getting a 3G signal when you are getting 4G speeds is because you are using a T-Mobile ROM. The way the Telus one works, if you don't have a ROM that is based off of Telus's source code, even though everything works perfectly fine, your signal will be "3G". It's really only an aesthetic thing, as the speeds themselves are 4G.
So what kernel do you recomend.
and is it the telus kernel with sudo rights ????

Not sure for kernel, I just used the stock one. I just finished flashing Synergy, haven't tried anything yet! I seem to have this issue where I need to re-search for my network after going into download mode (normal behavior?) so I need to get that working before I want to benchmark.
I fully tested a custom juggernaut rom and a rooted Telus stock rom and the juggernaut rom is waaayyy better. Smoother more options as well as better signal. True it says 3g but actually I get better speeds than stcok Telus rom. In my opinion after several tests don't use stock Telus. It may be better code than T-Mobile stock rom but custom juggernaut rom is way better

Thanks guys!
Ive got it rooted with the lightning blue theme going, and froze a bunch of apps with Titanium that i hate seeing running in the background.
one last question though(i think)
I once had a Fascinate, when i flashed a voodoo mod kernel and tried to remove it, the phone became bricked and the entire insides of the phone had to be replaced
Can flashing a kernel mess with the boot loader(which i assume is cwm)? Is there anything i need to do differently when changing kernels as well, cause so far with ROMS ive just been resetting and flashing with ease. Also do Roms come with kernels, so flashing a rom will either go back to default/other kernels?

Root SGH-I757

Anyway to root Bell Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE???
I cannot find anything on google or in this forums.
Thanks!!!
yea me either ive been searching for a couple weeks now.... it sucks
Rooting i757M
Am also still looking how to root this thing. The Skyrocket HD is merely the same phone, branded on AT&T carrier and this article made it clear that the phone has been silently put to the side, in favor of the coming S3. (phonesreview.co.uk/2012/05/10/samsung-galaxy-s3-buries-att-sii-skyrocket-hd).
That is, even on samsung online personal profile page, you can even find the SGH-i757M in the list of phone version, to add in your owner's page.
If anyone of you manage to root the phone, thanks to let me know.
Correction: The SGH-i757M can be found in the BAR model section on Samsung profile page and not under Smartphone. Hmm... weird categorization. Are those bar phones not smartphones? Oh, they are mini tablets.
Here is one.
Do you have any procedure to use that files? I just don't want to brick my phone
There's no any special procedure other than flash it with Odin
There're many tutorials about it here and there like that for example.

Hey that is great news. I wonder if the CWM for the E120L is compatible then?
I wonder if this works to root the device, as I've read it worked for the Asian versions of the GS2 HD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
dsixda, I guess it won't be too hard for you to check that as you're recognized developer
You can download the stock I757M firmware with the CheckFus using advanced tab (or using cli only version) with the following data:
Model: SGH-I757M
Product code: SGH-I757ZKMBMC
HIDSWVER: I757MUGLCA/I757MOYCLCA/I757MUGLCA/I757MUGLCA
Yes, I'll try all that as soon as I get my device Always nice to have the stock Odin firmware so that I don't need to dump everything beforehand in case something goes wrong.
Thank you again
Just FYI, the stock firmware is now available at sammobile.com. Grab an account and search for SGH-I757M. The download is much faster than using CheckFus.
Dsixda! So happy your getting this Device, I also want to say thank-you for your Kitchen you created!! Amasing work. Used it all the time with my Evo 3d.

Try the Zergrush method which I linked in the previous page.
I haven't decided 100% whether to get it, as I still love my original S2. But if I get it I will incorporate it into the kitchen, once we figure out the custom recovery method.
I'm assuming any of the Tengrak GS2 HD recovery images (Odin .tar) will work, as long as you don't flash the associated Tegrak kernel for the ES120L/S/K?
You can always flash the stock firmware above in case you mess up.
Tried the Zergrush method, I had no luck. Oh well no big deal for now

Or flash the first link provided by rxulan in page 1. It's the stock ROM but the system.img has superuser injected in it.
And/or Google for the Tegrak custom recovery in Xda. Just flash one of those recovery.tar meant for the HD, but not the kernel.

ODIN does not recognise .img or .ext4 files. I understand those are recovery files that CWD can restore but your device should already have been rooted. This is exactly the purpose of this thread, rooting the device first of all. This have been difficult for us to find the right .md5 files to use in ODIN. The device we're trying to root, SGH-i757M.
@ezechias
Odin doesn't recognize the files inside the rooted tar archive (the one linked on page 1), but you can flash them as a tar.md5, which you already know is a preferred format. There are guides online on how to convert it to tar.md5, you can Google it or I can post it later.
First, try to flash the TAR file as is; if it doesn't work then convert to tar.md5, then flash it.
Anyways, it's strange that nobody wants to be the lab rat to test the rooted TAR or the custom recovery that we have already discussed. We have the emergency stock ROM to fall back on if anything goes wrong. Looks like I'll have to purchase this device soon and try it out myself I already have all the files and stock firmware downloaded and ready to go
ICS for E120 K/L/S has been released.
I'm sure the same will happen with I757M pretty soon

[Q] Just recovered from bad encription and need a little help

first of all i was lucky all I had to do was go back and use a root 66 image to recover using odin.
Now i know i will sound like a newb sorry please bear with me if you can.
From the start i was on 4.1.2 on SRx Mod i decided Hay i should encrypt my phone (bad idea i got stuck in a boot loop) so after searching for how to fix it i was told to use the unbrick then i wad told to use route 66 i choose route 66. I have since successfully flashed rooted 4.1.2 but i have a few questions.
First route 66 lets you choose which recovery you wish to use. now to install a recovery (my first root it came with CWM) Should i just download the app and install CWM with rom recovery or use Goo manager to install TWRP? or should i use odin to flash it? if i should flash it where should i get the correct files?
Second.
Say I would like to update to 4.3 and take advantage of roms again. What is the safest way to go about this. Depending on rls I have been able to update via recovery and a new rom and i have had to use odin. I believe (not sure) safest way to go from a major rls to another it should be done with odin. Like going from ICS to JB so should I use odin again to root to 4.3?
So to shorten my question
How do i install recovery on a freshly rooted (re rooted via route 66) Also i am currently runnning 4.12 to update to 4.3 do i need to use odin and a 4.3 image to be safe? or can i install a 4.3 rom and it will update.
In all now that my phone is working I am weary of just trying and want to do it the correct way and now i know trying to use encryption is dumb!
THANKS in ADVANCE i appreciate your help.
When it comes to Recoveries, choos if you want CWM or TWRP. Both are good. Based on that get either Rom Manager app for CWM or Goo Manager for TWRP. Let the app install the recovery for you.
If you want 4.3, then look for Stock Mod Rom in Android Development section. Flash that rom via CWM/TWRP. Make sure to follow the instructions in the Rom's thread. Particularly the part where it wants you to flash ATT insecure kernel. The Rom is Rooted. Do not flash 4.3 via Odin.
Thanks for the refresher
I have been away for a little while and i wanted to make sure. SO to get it straight
Right now I just got back from boot loop with route 66 via odin.
To go on i simply get CWM or TWRP with the respective program (rom manager or goo manager)
Then get the 4.3 rom from the rout66 thread and update to 4.3 via recovery.
If not which rom do i use.
Edit:
Ok now i think i understand your post you directed me to use a specific rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2501303
So from base 4.1.2 i can update to any 4.3 rom i choose? I just want to make sure as most major releases have some issues at the beginning maybe everything is sorted and their is no problems,
One thing i want to ask is can i choose another rom as sometimes i like to switch to and from touchwiz
So i guess my question now is once i install a recovery program of my choice (i always used CWM so ill probably stick with that)
Can I install any rom no problem? as far as changing versions only go up to 4.3 dont go back down with a recovery flash?
SO AFAIK right now that everything is all good and i wont mess my phone up again when loading a rom.
Is their anything i SHOULD NOT do, Beyond common sense i know not to flash a rom for another phone ETC
I appreciate your help I haven't been following the development for a couple months So i am Rusty also its been a while since i had to start from scratch with odin and at that time we did not have the GREAT list of Official Images so I got a rooted rom that had CWM already installed. I want to get to how i was before when i was enjoying the work of the devs and loving it. being in stock reminds me of how much work the devs do YOU GUYS ARE GREAT (if any even read this thread)

Do not do the Red Striked part. Search for Stock Mod Rom by @saranhai
Thank you to be safe i will use the ROM you suggested although this is the only thing that worries me as i never have or really want to flash modems
YOU MUST FLASH THE T999UVUEMJ4 MODEM OR T999UVUEMJC MODEM FOR T-MOBILE GALAXY S III IN ORDER FOR DATA TO WORK; OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT HAVE DATA
AS USUAL, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR DEVICE! ONE WRONG MOVE (Especially with the Modem) AND YOU COULD END UP WITH A VERY EXPENSIVE BRICK. PROCEED AT OWN RISK.

I hope this is the ROM you are talking about and if so what do i do about the modem issue as I am coming from 4.1.2 IDK if i have the correct modem installed. All i have right now is Route 66 rooted 4.1.2 and CWM recovery I also created a Nandroid as soon as i got recovery so i can ave a pretty clean android to go back to if anything happens.
I am sorry i may be annoyed if i were you possibly so i hope you are hanging in there with me i really appreciate it once i do this ill be back in the game and wont need any more help. I just need to get this part sorted, THANK YOU
So other than the modem thing I think i got it, i just hope i dont have to mess with the modem IDK if I'm ready to try something that could hard brick my phone after just recovering it
Flashing the modem won't brick it. It's the exact same procedure as flashing the kernel, and the risk level is pretty much the same. As long as your device is the T999, you don't have anything to worry about. Just check the md5 on the download to make sure its not a corrupted/bad download. Even if you flash the T999L/T999V/I535 modem, it shouldn't brick. It just wouldn't get signal till you flash the correct one again. Many, many people have flashed the modems with no problems at all.

I really didnt think you would answer my post!
Anyway so even though the warning says i can brick it with a modem change really all that will happen is that i will just not get Data until i install the correct one got it.
And unless anyone posts otherwise The first 4.3 rom i should install is Stock Mod Rom by @saranhai and also flash the modem T999UVUEMJC via recovery?
I tried the modem map but i had no success with getting to to work, first it said the link was not supported and i needed to revert to GMaps Classic so i did but i got the same results. Random places all over the world (some in the sea) some said city and modem some were simply city's so i think its out of date so i suppose that the worst that can happen is that i get no data i suppose i can try the other modem listed on the roms page?
If someone knows (as their are two maybe its east west cost or something of the like i live in southern California south of la but furthest from the border of Mexico in San Diego so north San Diego county but anyone that knows the area may know of the massive military base i live south east of Camp Pendleton
(off topic but if a war comes to our shores i pray i am dead already or something divine as i live very close to a large Marine Training base and camp/base in General and right next to it (on the coast) is a dual Nuclear Reactor Power plant and one reactor has been malfunctioning and AFAIK its just being maintained to keep anything catastrophic from happening (which i believe IDK for sure was the reason why it is still running but not producing power)

Many people warn about that because on many devices it is true. just like a kernel or recovery though, if you flash the wrong thing to its partition, it can brick. I.e. If you flash a recovery to the modems partition.
A lot of times people bring habits from their old devices. In our case, while it is possible, it's highly unlikely you'd brick flashing the modem. We know it's not going to flash the wrong item/partition. Several people have tried flashing the I535, T999L, T999N modems and all that happened was they got no working signal. Flashed back to the correct modem and all was good again.

If wifi doesnt turn on, then try the kernel. If everything boots and runs as you like, then its up to you.

[Q] New to Droid Incredible: what should I do?

Hi guys! After purchasing a Droid X that I thought was a Droid X2, I've now purchased a Droid Incredible from Ebay. For context, it's for my 12 yr old daughter who is on PagePlus. I've got her on one of the talk and text plans wiht no data.
I've read the wiki and a number of threads but couldn't find a clear answer to my question: What should I do with this before I give it to her?
Things I'd like to do:
1. Get rid of/freeze bloatware
2. Address the short battery life issue (if possible)
3. Give her the ability to change the theme, preferably without installing a program
4. Limit data to wifi since I don't want her using PP minutes for data inadvertantly
So, what would you do with a new phone?
TIA,
CheapDad

Hi from another Page Plus user!
#4 is easy: just turn Mobile Data off in the phone's settings.
For only #1: Root the phone and install Titanium Backup. Follow the first part of this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1600904
You do not need to follow the full guide and get s-off unless you want to, for what you want to do just having root will be enough. Follow steps 1, 2, and 3. Once Superuser and Titanuim Backup are installed, you will be able to remove any apps you want. Plus, you'll have a custom recovery installed, which will allow you to continue:
For #2 and #3: Follow the guide as stated above, and flash a ROM with Theme Engine support, such as Cyanogenmod:
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/get/jenkins/21410/cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-inc.zip
...that is a link for the last official Cyanogenmod nightly, which is Gingerbread. It will have much better battery life than stock, and there are still lots of free themes around for CM7.
(There are some pretty good Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean unofficial builds, but the video camera is broken on most anything newer than Gingerbread. You can even put KitKat on your Droid Incredible if you want to, but that breaks picture messaging as well as the video camera.)
Thanks very much, musical-chairs! Your post summarized everything very nicely. Unfortunately, my phone didn't come with an SD card, so I've got one on order from Newegg. Once it gets here I'll get started.
One question - if I use Titanium Backup, can I back up the AOSP ROM so that I can restore the phone to stock? Or is there a better way of doing that?
Second question - does CM already address the 149 MB storage issue, or do I still need to apply a fix to that?

When you say "back up the AOSP ROM," I think back up the entire ROM. Titanium doesn't do that, that's a nandroid, done in recovery.
What Titanium does, is back up individual apps (and their app data). That's ok, as long as you're backing up user apps (apps that live in /data/apps). It's not ok, and known to cause problems, to back up system apps (apps that live in /system/apps).

Forgive the inaccurate language. What I 'm thinking is that I'd like the option of restoring the phone to its original state, ideally with the most up to date firmware issued by the HTC or Verizon (it's a Verizon phone). I assume I should do that before I change anything. How do I do that?

As Pons said, you can back up your stock rom before flashing a new one, in recovery (aka make a nandroid backup) and restore it at any time. Also, you can wipe the phone and install a stock image, you can find those here: http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/
I mentioned Titanium not so much for making backups as for uninstalling bloatware. Of course, if you decide to flash a custom ROM like CyanogenMod, that is a non-issue.
The 150Mb data issue requires a separate fix, flash that after flashing a ROM. The thread for that is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1623038 You're looking for the 'no data limit' variant of the mod.

I received a 32GB SD card yesterday in the mail from Newegg and I plan to follow all of the steps you suggest tomorrow. I went to the link for the stock images to save one locally and I can't figure which one to use. My phone has the following:
Build Number
4.08.605.19 CL539174 release keys
Software number
4.08.605.19 710RD
This doesn't seem to make any of the file names at the stock image site. Can you help me identify the correct one?

The newest full stock image there is 4.08.605.15: http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/
Then there is the 4.08.605.19 OTA update patch: http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Image...WE_4.08.605.19-4.08.605.15_release_305224.zip
...the stock images are flashed through HBOOT rather than recovery, so they wipe everything, including your custom recovery and the bootloader unlock. I think you would rename the OTA update to PB31IMG.zip (just like the full stock image) and flash it through HBOOT as well, so that after flashing them both you would have a completely stock, locked, unrooted phone. These can be useful if you want to sell the phone or if something gets crashed or messes up in a really bad way. 4.08.605.15 has that annoying bug where it likes to keep rebooting at 2:00 am, but it would be fine for recovering your device.
Alternately, there are odexed and deodexed stock images in the main directory of http://dinc.does-it.net/ that you would flash through recovery. They would return the ROM to stock but would leave the recovery in place and the bootloader unlocked. Also, the guide recommends that you make a nandroid backup of your stock ROM as soon as you're in clockworkmod recovery, so you could always restore your backup and get the ROM back to stock (but leave the bootloader unlocked.)
On the bright side, if your phones are on 4.08.605.19, you will already have the latest HBOOT, so unlocking via htcdev will be nice and simple - no need to download and run the RUU update as the guide says in part 1 section 2, just run the fastboot commands and click along in htcdev.
Sorry, this post got kind of messy...
To close the loop, I spent the better part of yesterday going through the process described by musical_chairs. First, I unlocked and rooted using HTCDev. I installed CWM and made a stock rom backup. I flashed/installed CM7.2. Once I did that, I realized that I didn't have Google Apps, so I followed the same process and installed that. (adb push) Lastly, I fixed the 150 mb storage limit.
As few thoughts on the process from the perspective of a noob with some computer/technical knowledge, but zero linux/android knowledge:
1. The instructions were great. The more detailed the better and pictures are even better yet. A few times I had to google when I got an unexpected outcome to find a youtube video or something to show me a picture so I could determine what I had done wrong.
2. I used the "downgrade to froyo" instructions but just changed the file name to match CM7.2. While I got this done, a set of instructions that are generalized (to flash a new rom, enter this command "adb push (name of file) /location/) would have been better because I would not have had to extrapolate. I appreciate that his comment reduces the simplicity to the absurd, but for someone doing this for the first time, absurdly simple is important.
3. The support here is phenomenal. I couldn't have done this without the guidance provided. Thank you!

For starters, open up a terminal and run:
Code:
su
reboot nvbackup
This will write your IMEI and carrier identification stuff stored in nvram to backup partitions. Your phone has built in backup partitions for this data and it will try to restore from them under certain circumstances (usually a flash gone wrong), but by default the backups are blank . Your phone will reboot, you'll see a couple of real quick flashes of little blue text, then it will boot up again normally.
Some other good terminal commands to note the output of would be:
Code:
getprop ro.bootloader
getprop gsm.version.baseband
That will tell you what bootloader and modem your phone is running on. You need to know this if you plan on doing any custom rom flashing. As a general rule don't ever attempt to downgrade bootloaders on this phone; the older ones can actually be downgraded but the newer ones will hard brick if you try it. Research, research, research before you do anything, and don't be afraid to ask questions. XDA forums are a great source of information, but beware of old information. Knox and the secure bootloaders changed how we have to treat this phone around Fall 2013, so following old forum posts or old articles on lifehacker or somewhere like that can be dangerous. Mostly custom rom zips won't touch your bootloader or modem. Its Odin you have to be most careful with, as those packages tend to be full firmware updates.
You're not ready to flash custom roms just yet unless you already flashed a custom recovery too like twrp or philz. You can use an Play store app called flashify to flash a custom recovery too since you're already rooted.
Flashify and Titanium Backup (pro version is very worth the money) are the only root apps I have on my S3.

You can use adb shell if you have adb set up. Otherwise install a terminal emulator from the play store. Jack palevich's is a good one.

Please read up some more before you attempt to install a custom rom. Most of the questions you are asking have been covered extensively throughout XDA and other forums. While you are at it, please don't limit yourself to just learning how to install a custom rom, but also learn what you should do in the event of issues. Some issues are general across all android devices and others are phone model specific.
Gapps is one of those basic things that you learn in the process of learning about rooting and installing custom roms and it is constantly being covered in discussions, wikis, and what not. But just to answer what is it: it is a necessary piece for installing most AOSP roms (If you do not know what AOSP is then please do some heavy research) if you want the Google Play store and other Google apps..

this a thread to explain some basics if you want. and as @aybarrap1 explained earlier , if you want direct access to the play store then you have to have the gapps pkg also. it is not necessary for the ROM to run and there are other markets to obtain apps., fdroid , aptoid , etc. ( bundling gapps with AOSP roms is a license thing , which i obviously dont have firm knowledge about. lol ).
as far as stable custom ROMs go it can really vary from device to device. i would suggest to read thru the threads and you can get a general feel for the stability of the ROM.
but once again , you'll probably just have to try some out and see.
some ROMs also require a certain level bootloader/modem to be able to be flashed , but it should state that in the first post.
good luck and happy flashing.

Will do, sorry for trying to be spoonfed. I'll try to do some research, but I'm not really sure where to start. Which is mostly why I'm asking so much

No problem. I just want to make sure you know enough that you can hopefully avoid hard bricking your phone as well as how to fix (or search for fixes) should something happen such as a soft brick or boot loop. If we were just to tell step by step how to install a specific ROM now, you would not be prepared to fix your phone should something go wrong.
The link mentioned by mrrocketdog is an excellent place to start. For the specifics with the d2att, just start reading through the AT&T Galaxy S3 forums by choosing topics about various issues. Make sure you read the stickies...they are there for good reason. If you see a ROM you might be interested in, please make sure you read the OP thoroughly and completely. If you don't understand something stated, go look for what it means. Read through the forum for the ROM...especially posts dated on and after the last modification and updated ROM by the OP. This will give you good information on any issues individuals are running into and what not.
