Overclocking with Stock 4.1.1 (rooted) - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

Got myself a Note 2 T889V this christmas with videotron (canada) still on jelly bean 4.1.1 and was wondering if I can overclock my cpu to 1.8ghz without installing a custom rom (saw MyRom and JediX which looks great but from the comments there seems to always be a few kinks with features not working so i'd prefer to keep stock unless you can convince me that it might be really worth it )
I rooted with Mskip toolkit using the ALLINONE, TWRP recovery and SuperSU. I was wondering if app like Tegrak actually work and would do the job, otherwise is there an alternative?
Thanks

no one?

I personally dont think an oc is necessary on this phone yet. Not quite sure what exactly we can accomplish with a higher clock rate at this point, other than draining the battery quicker.
But if you really want to, maybe SetCPU or app like that might work.

I think you'll need a custom kernel to overclock. Using SetCPU will only allow you to go to the max of the phone. You can under clock, but not overclock. Frankly though, I haven't seen the need to overclock. This phone is fast enough as is.

Cant do it without a custom kernel.

i have an easy question for you experts out there!

now keep in mind i am the noobest of noobs in modifying phones. i have an Epic 4g and haven't even touched the surface on it's potential apparently from reading through this forum.
my question is (before i start doing anything else to my phone) what exactly does a custom kernel do for your phone?
also what exactly does a custom rom do for your phone?
I am currently running a rooted Epic 4g w/cwm and i am on the DK28 build.
what else does everyone reccomend for me to get the full experience from my phone? (in the way of a custom kernel and custom rom, since i am pretty affluent to most apps at the moment)
Well a custom rom is usually optimized for speed and responsivenes. All roms are different since devs usually put there own mods and thems in. Some are completely stock temed others are themed fully. Depends on what your tastes are. As for kernals they're usually overclocked and undervolted which means it'll be overclocked to 1.2 or 1.3 ghz and run at the same power level as 1ghz or less. Usually gives faster phone with beter response and overall speed. (Opens apps quicker) hope this gives a little insight. I'm personally running epic experience 2.0.07 and genocide kernal overclocked to 1.2 ghz.(not undervolted at 1.2 ghz only at 1ghz so battery suffers a bit). Waiting for next epic experience release.

that does help tremendously! i had most of it figured out but i wanted to be sure as to what they meant. i appreciate the help and i will be trying the rom and kernel you suggested!
No problem man.

Why Should I Flash A Rom?

Right now, I have Chris' stock pulled kernel with CWM. I've flashed the No-CIQ mod. I use Go Launcher EX, which has a lot of themes(using Glass for now). Tegrak lets me overclock at 1.4GHZ stable, Quadrant scores around 3900-4000. Use Lcd resolution for a density of 200. Titanium lets me freeze apps like Mediahub. Since installing the kernel over 1 month ago, I've had zero LOS. My battery goes 12 hours, with light use, and still 40-50% left. So my question is, what would I gain by installing a rom that I don't have already?
I'd leave it be. Sounds like you're doing just fine.
Of u like something a rom offers then go for it, otherwise leave it be.
I personally like stock deodexed and rooted.

I personally flashed a rom because I wanted battery Percentage and I also liked the Battery savings some of them offer. Such as Calkulins Rom, which has the Cpu script that undervolts as the battery goes down. All in all it depends on what you like.
You can see from my sig that I like flashing roms. I'm just finding it hard to justify in this case. My phone pretty much is rocking the way I have it set up now, stable as anything. I'm sure at some point I'll flash just for the hell of it, when I need to kill some time.
If you are happy with the phone as is, then let it be. My biggest reason for loading ROMs is for the MODs. Back in my EVO 4G days it was also about getting new versions of Sense that that kinda thing.
I love the miui battery bar

Biggest thing for me was the Lockscreen customization (running Starburst 1.9)...being able to unlock phone directly to an app (I use the camera...many fewer missed opportunities with my kids now) is pretty much priceless.
Widgetlocker gives the same options.

[Q] Overclocked Kernels

Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone received all the tech goodies we wanted for Xmas!
I've noticed that most of the ROM's available in the development section already have an Overclocked Kernel and also UV options. I personally would rather use a stock kernel, or a custom kernel that is not overclocked. Right now I don't see that available from what I've searched for.
There are a couple ROMs I'm interested in running, but both install a new OC kernel. Is it possible to strip the kernel from the ROM before installing? And if so, does anyone know a tutorial for doing so, or is it as simple as opening the archive file, stripping the kernel out, and rezipping the file?
I know there are apps like SetCPU to change the clock speed on an OC ROM, but I really don't want to depend on software to keep the OC from occuring. I hope I was clear enough in my post to get the point across lol! Thanks for any assistance gents (and ladies).
Franco's kernels don't have OC

Thanks Josh! Appreciate your input. I am still interested in the other option as well, stripping the kernel from the ROM.
I am not sure how to repackage the from after you do that, but if you extract the rom the kernel is called "boot.img" and you can flash it in fastboot so you can basically flash any kernel you want on any rom

Just curious why you wouldn't want an OC/UV kernel, you're getting better performance and better battery life, no downside imo.

I honestly just don't like to OC my CPU's. In the long run it will decrease the life of the CPU.
Besides, if you have a great AOSP ROM to run, there really is no need to OC at all. Any performance boost from the OC comes at the cost of shortening the life of the CPU.

I've run Intel chips at 40% OC for a decade at a time, with little impact.
I don't expect my Nexus, with or without <20% OC, to last me nearly that long.
Just sayin'....

[Q] New to GN! Kernel Question

Hi everyone!
Well, I finally switched over from my Driod Charge last week. Prior to that, I had the Fascinate for about a year. So, while I am new to the Nexus, I am certainly not new to Samsung, Android or flashing... as of now, I have unlocked and rooted my phone, but other than that, I am completely stock (and not minding it actually) I am sure I will get around to custom ROMs very soon though. But in the meantime, I have a couple quick questions:
1) Is ALL flashing now done through ROM Manager or Clockwork Mod (i.e. No Odin?)
2) As said, I am still stock (4.0.2) but I would like a kernel to flash, not a ROM (yet!) that will allow overclocking, wireless tethering, etc... suggestions anyone??
Thats really it for now.... just wanted to say HI to my "new" community here on XDA!
Joe
1 for roms etc, yes (use cwm, not rom manager)! only use odin when cw doesnt work.
2 franco.kernel, trinity, glados, popcornkernel and leankernel are all great
And welcome

1) Yes.
Odin is used for MAJOR **** ups only.
2) There are one or two kernels compatible with 4.0.2 in the forum bit I think Franco's one is 4.0.3/4 only.
I think james bond kernel is 4.0.2 compatible.
3) Flash a rom, there are some nice roms to be flashed. Personally I use AOKP 4.0.3.
Yea, I am sure I will get to ROMs soon enough.... but coming from the Charge, the dual core in the GN makes it feel fast enough so as it is!
OK... so no ODIN.
As far as the kernels... any show better battery life? Really the only downside to the GN, but I do have a spare battery and charge, so Im ok.

I would suggest Imoseyon's Lean Kernel in conjunction with Lean Tweaks. I get good speed and decent battery life with it.

Thanks... but I think it says that Leankernel is for 4.0.3/4... I'm in 4.0.2. I'm assuming I can't use it?

James bond is the only 4.0.2 kernel I know of.
Search around though and you might find another.
If you want a stock rom that's 4.0.3 then flash bugless Pete's rom.
Its pretty much plain stock.

[Q] Overclock kernel

Hey guys I been searching, and I am not sure which overclock kernel would work for me. I am currently running LD50 from Team Venum on my Sprint E4GT, but I am thinking about switching over to CM9. Maybe CM10, but I dunno if I want to deal with the Jelly Bean not supporting flash. I like flash. Anywho what would be a good overclock kernel? I been running into a bunch. I generally leave the phone at the 1200 mark, but I like the option that I can if I want to bump the go power. I found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721235 but it's saying that it's a custom built kernel from the Skyrocket. this is why I am asking. I want to overclock my phone. I want it for bragging rights, but I don't want to have a paperweight. That's what the iPhone's are good for! Anyone willing to help?

Unfortunately I don't know that we really have any options for JB at this point. The included kernel is what you'll have to use.
I can tell you however using the kernel you referenced will guarantee you a brick.
The only overclockable kernels for the et4g are for GB and maybe TWiz ICS, there's only one JB kernel and its sbrissens which is included in all JB roms. All the aosp ICS kernels aren't overclockable since their goal is official CM support. JB supports flash, you just have to sideload the apk from adobe. Overclocking doesn't make a damn bit of difference on this device, it will actually lower your quadrant score because its designed to run at the factory clock speed and the I/O scheduler and OOM groupings are setup to work with the stock speed, when overclocking it throws everything off causing a large drop in I/O, and graphics scores.
We are legion, for we are many.
