Merry Christmas everyone! I hope everyone received all the tech goodies we wanted for Xmas!
I've noticed that most of the ROM's available in the development section already have an Overclocked Kernel and also UV options. I personally would rather use a stock kernel, or a custom kernel that is not overclocked. Right now I don't see that available from what I've searched for.
There are a couple ROMs I'm interested in running, but both install a new OC kernel. Is it possible to strip the kernel from the ROM before installing? And if so, does anyone know a tutorial for doing so, or is it as simple as opening the archive file, stripping the kernel out, and rezipping the file?
I know there are apps like SetCPU to change the clock speed on an OC ROM, but I really don't want to depend on software to keep the OC from occuring. I hope I was clear enough in my post to get the point across lol! Thanks for any assistance gents (and ladies).
Franco's kernels don't have OC

Thanks Josh! Appreciate your input. I am still interested in the other option as well, stripping the kernel from the ROM.
I am not sure how to repackage the from after you do that, but if you extract the rom the kernel is called "boot.img" and you can flash it in fastboot so you can basically flash any kernel you want on any rom

Just curious why you wouldn't want an OC/UV kernel, you're getting better performance and better battery life, no downside imo.

I honestly just don't like to OC my CPU's. In the long run it will decrease the life of the CPU.
Besides, if you have a great AOSP ROM to run, there really is no need to OC at all. Any performance boost from the OC comes at the cost of shortening the life of the CPU.

I've run Intel chips at 40% OC for a decade at a time, with little impact.
I don't expect my Nexus, with or without <20% OC, to last me nearly that long.
Just sayin'....

now keep in mind i am the noobest of noobs in modifying phones. i have an Epic 4g and haven't even touched the surface on it's potential apparently from reading through this forum.
my question is (before i start doing anything else to my phone) what exactly does a custom kernel do for your phone?
also what exactly does a custom rom do for your phone?
I am currently running a rooted Epic 4g w/cwm and i am on the DK28 build.
what else does everyone reccomend for me to get the full experience from my phone? (in the way of a custom kernel and custom rom, since i am pretty affluent to most apps at the moment)
Well a custom rom is usually optimized for speed and responsivenes. All roms are different since devs usually put there own mods and thems in. Some are completely stock temed others are themed fully. Depends on what your tastes are. As for kernals they're usually overclocked and undervolted which means it'll be overclocked to 1.2 or 1.3 ghz and run at the same power level as 1ghz or less. Usually gives faster phone with beter response and overall speed. (Opens apps quicker) hope this gives a little insight. I'm personally running epic experience 2.0.07 and genocide kernal overclocked to 1.2 ghz.(not undervolted at 1.2 ghz only at 1ghz so battery suffers a bit). Waiting for next epic experience release.

that does help tremendously! i had most of it figured out but i wanted to be sure as to what they meant. i appreciate the help and i will be trying the rom and kernel you suggested!
No problem man.

Hello All!
I made a similar thread to this over at the SGSII forums and was wondering what your answers are. So, the question is simple, which Kernel are you using and is the battery decent? Or a pile of rubbish? Lemme know. Poll has been setup with the main Kernels, I'll put an "other" option for people who are using new Kernels.
So, poll away!

was using James Bond kernel 1.35 OC UV, never crash or lag. far better battery life than stock and super smooth.
right now i am testing faux123's kernel V9u for 4.0.2.

I tried Faux 4.0.3 Kernel yesterday, battery was losing 2% every 30 mins on idle, with next to 0 apps installed.
Running Stock AOKP Milestone 2 kernel, whichever kernel that is!
I wanna try different kernel but my ROM is perfect, not sure sure what other kernels may add that my rom already has and does.

As far as features go, Franco.Kernel adds color and vibrance to your screen. Its also tweakable so you can customize the color settings as you please. Battery is apparently awful though.

thank u. just flashed that kernel, latest. but i dont see color control option anywhere... its supposed to be built in the kernel but i dont see it...
unless i have to pay for the app he has which i dont wanna just for a color change.
am i just blind, not seing that option arggh

I am sort of noticing that battery life isn't so great too, although I wasn't sure since I haven't been running it for very long.
I was also looking for the best kernel.
Everybody talks about franco.Kernel. I will give it a try though.
Was using Franco's until earlier and now back to the Apex kernel that comes with bigxie's AOSP build
Eh? Franco kernel has the best battery life for me.

I just loaded on Lean kernel yesterday. Initial indications are that the battery life is extremely good.
180mhz cpu while screen off = happy battery.
Giving glaDOS a try.. it has some cool features like turn the screen on by touching it.. also has color control and battery life seems pretty decent so far. Big fan of imoseyon though.

I'm currently on Bigxie Build 8 with the Kernel included with it. Battery is pretty good. Underclocked my CPU to 970MHz. Losing 2% battery overnight (About 8 hours) and High usage I'm getting a decent amount of battery.
I'm wondering: I'm running ARHD 2.1.3 and thinking about flashing a kernel. Franco's had more options, but I'm getting that Jame Bonds kernel has a better battery life. That appeals to me. edit: ah, I see that Franco's is only for 4.0.3
Still, when I flash the kernel with ARHD 2.1.3 running, is it better to flash the anykernel.zip or should I just flash the original kernel?
Argh, just in the fun, looking for the best kernel. I'm between Franco's and Der Kernel Trinity NP (by the way, NP, Google, don't let Samsung impose it's boring naming system)
Trinity offers 512OC for the GPU, but I'd say Franco gives a better battery life....
Hmmmm difficult decision, isn't it? What do you guys think?
Currently rocking the Trinity kernel with mildly OC'd GPU (384 MHz).
I'm using imoseyon's kernel. I love minimalist kernels. Stable, fast, and not full of crapfeatures that just cause everything to crash and SOD and bootloop.
I think it's probably a good idea to give a try first of the kernel that comes with the ROM. Developers often adjust the ROM around the kernel they use and vice versa.
i went back to the James Bond kernel, no reboot or lag.
Lean IMO

So my apologies for asking this question. What i am looking to do though is improve over all experience for my brother with his phone. Ideally and this is me talking in reference to what i have seen in the Fascinate community. I want a good daily driver that is going to improve over all performance and have the ability to over clock and under volt possibly a different radio as well. I see the Tiamat Kernel but correct me if i am wrong that is only for AOSP roms. I personally love the idea of AOSP but for my brother the phone giving issue in any way is not a option. Again based off the Fascinate Dev community i know our touchwiz based roms in comparison to the AOSP stuff is much more manageable in case anything arises. I only hope that somebody in the community here who reads this is familiar with the Fascinate and can better help my decision. Thank you in advance.
Edit** Just noticed that nitsuj17 is a dev here so hopefully he can chime in. His roms on the fascinate were perfect for daily driving and stability.
Most of the Sense ROM's don't need to be overclocked and undervolted. Most of my favorite have custom kernals modded for the ROM. I've tried overclocking, but it seems to work better with the kernal that comes with it.
AOSP, i enjoy overclocking and undervolting. However, i think testing is the most important thing.
Drellisdee has the best kernel for sense #21 IMO. Nitsuj "m" Rom is an amazing stock modded Rom.. I received excellent battery with that kernel and Rom... Then I always OC/UV to 1.3Ghz and -50mv on all voltages with that kernel

Awesome appreciate it guys. Did all the work tonight and did what faehsemc said. Man downgrading to 2.3.3 was a pain.Only issue i am having now is i can't get android wifi tether to work is this a known problem of sorts? The devices trying to connect continue to try to get a ip address.
I haven't had any issues with tether.. I use wireless tether 2.0.7
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda premium
ahhhh i was trying to use one of the beta builds. i will try to do that before my brother leaves. thank you again.
I use what is in my sig at stock clock speeds with smartassv2 gov and UV -100 across the board. My phone takes UV like its nothing but if I OC over about 1.3 or 1.4 it locks up within 5 min.
I would like to say that i did undervolt it. No offense to the developer of incredicontrol but it could use a better GUI. Correct me if i am wrong though but you have to use incredicontrol in conjunction with something like voltage control. I figured voltage control would have done the overclocking and voltage setting but it will only do the overclocking, governor, and scheduler stuff. I think setcpu does it all but given that it is my brothers phone i didn't purchase the app. Like i said though the only issue i was having was wi fi tether. So as someone mentioned above he was using the 2.xx version versus the 3.xx betas. If someone can confirm whether or not which version of wifi tether is broken or not i would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to clutter the forum with another thread.
Loving my GNex, however I've only had it a couple weeks.
There are several kernels out there, and from comparing all of them and reading all the threads as much as I can, they all seem to have relatively similar features... I'm having a hard time picking one.
Is there someone who can clarify the differentiating features of each kernel? Are certain kernels better suited for different ROMs? Do certain ones have compatibility or other persistent issues?
Mainly:
faux123
franco
GlaDOS
jamesbond
Trinity
I've tried faux123 015m (loved faux's kernels on the Sensation, but I had some mobile data issues with it on the GN) and Trinity (latest seems fast/stable, except the color profile was messing with me). I'm trying GlaDOS now. Again, though, I'm not sure what advantages or perks one kernel flavor gives me over the next. Can anyone shed some light?

I have tried them all myself at one time or another and i always come back to GLaDOS. I chose to run this because of the unique and innovative features Ezekeel has developed plus the great battery life. BLX, Vibration control, Touch Wake and of course the Wheatley Governor which was developed for this kernel to give the best performance and battery life, which in fact it does. The GLaDOS control app is great too and Ezekeel is always updating and making it better.
GLaDOS is exclusive to Rootzwiki that why you don't see too much mention of it here unfortunately ... I'm not even sure if Ezekeel lurks around here anymore?
Leankernel for me

Thanks for your responses!
However it looks like people are just posting what they use. What I'm looking for is information on what differentiates each kernel.. what is each kernel's "claim to fame"? From what I've seen, all of the kernels' features look pretty similar.
For example, "X kernel balance performance and battery really well. Y kernel reduces the voltage to the screen to further battery savings. Z kernel is more focused on performance. A kernel allows your phone to make popcorn." etc.
Or are they basically the same?
Thanks blowtorch for giving some information as to what differentiates GlaDOS from the rest

Jamesbond will likely give you best battery life and stability. He has a couple of other kernels with some performance boost. Glados was buggy as hell and some other things but that is for you to decide. Other kernels for me were kind of meh. I honestly dont understand how so many people say this kernel or that kernel is the best or best on battery life when so many tweaks in X kernel add more performance at the cost of mah. I liked glados and its features a lot but it came at a cost too high. Touchwake is a really nice feature in it and i am surprised more people don't ask for it. Another kernel i liked was bamf paradigm but i am not using it. I would like to try that rom again in the future but it wasnt ready for me personally. Havent tried franco's at all. Just seems to be feature packed kernel but for what?

I like francos so far works great with my favorite rom AOKP, buttery smooth, stable as hell, you can go battery saver or performance since you can OC/UV, etc, if you buy the App in play store it works great cuz he updates the kernel oftem and you can use either milestone versions or nihgtlies, and has the option for autodownload and autoflash the lastests updates.
You can change screen color values, as i said oc/uv, change the boot animation, and plenty other stuff..
Thats my 2 cents on your research
Edit: forgot to tell you, he also has a support mail , and if you have any issue kernel related he will answer with a solution if possible.. Report bugs etc

I've been using GlaDOS for the last couple days and haven't had any of these issues. Bluetooth is working perfectly, even over my car's hands-free setup which has been problematic with some kernels, and audio is working perfectly... maybe you were on an older build?
Anyone have any other info? I'm surprised nobody has said anything about faux or Trinity..
Well I guess I'll be the first to represent faux kernel over here. Like that its not over done and no special app is needed to control it and the gamma control from panda board he forward ported is pretty slick if you ask me

I'm sticking with CM9 Kernel for now it's as good as the rest IMO plus they are integrating more and more into it ... missing touch wake though from GLaDOS, oh well
I'm mainly looking for battery life now. I don't really notice much difference between most of these kernels in terms of battery life. All of these kernels have good performance without overclocking.
I find that i bounce around from kernel to kernel and in the end when all is said and done no kernel is better than the other and it really comes down to preference.
I am not asking which one is the best, but which one would you prefer for best battery backup? Samsung's latest release is forcing me to use a custom kernel, but I'd like to know which one I should use as I am not freak about flashing plenty stuffs.
Thanks in advance.
Redpill or uneak or perseus. You can try them all.
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Yeah, but I don't want to try them all bro. I know they all are great but that's why I asked which one is the preferable for battery backup specifically.
I am on Perseus now, I hope I've made the right choice. Lets see...
Persues is good for battery.neak is battery drainer.my experience
You're not asking which ones the best, but I'll tell you. I have used all the available kernels for my Note 2, and in my experience RedPill is the only one that is giving me consistent and best battery and overall performance. With more and more updates the developer has been adding more and more options. You can also undervolt the CPU and GPU with RedPill for further enhance your battery life. I had huge battery problems on my S3, So i had to go through a bunch of crap like different custom roms, undervolting, under-clocking etc to achieve good battery life. But when i got my Note 2 i used it for a few days completely stock and un-modified. And i was surprised at how amazing the battery life was. But if your having problems i can recommend AllianceRom + RedPill kernel, than undervolt the CPU/GPU (The utility needed to do so comes with the kernel, after flashing there will be an app installed on the phone called STweaks). And do some other minor adjustments to achieve incredible battery life. If you need any help or additional information you can contact me anytime.
I also want to know...
I would also like to know this as well. Since upgrading to 4.1.2 I am having bad battery backup, never thought of switching kernels but now I have to.
Shame on you Samsung....
