Viper Boot Loop - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm new and can't post in dev threads yet...apologies for posting here...
I flashed Viper 1.2.3 a few days ago, and it runs PERFECTLY as far as I can tell... Last night I moved about 80 apps to sd card with TB...
This morning I rebooted my phone...it would boot all the way...run for 3-7 minutes...then reboot...over and over...at least 15 times.
I resolved the problem by quickly uninstalling Android Assistant and Weatherbug...then turning off Wifi, Data, GPS, and AutoSynch between reboots. That allowed the ROM to boot and settle successfully, and I could turn everything back on and restore those two apps...
I guess I'll try to remember to turn off all connections before rebooting next time....but can anyone explain WHY this happened??

Maybe is a memory issue...have you moved a system app? maybe the OS is looking for some app to boot and does not find it.

Thanks!! I suppose that's possible...but I was just moving user apps to SD in a batch... The ROM would boot okay, but it seemed like a couple apps that start on boot, combined with auto sync were just too much for the ROM to handle....?? Turning off connections is what fixed me, and allowed the ROM to fully boot and settle... But I'm not sure how or why... Since I've found a way around it, I'm just trying to learn exactly what may have happened...

[Q] Random Reboot Troubleshooting?

I'm running CM 6.1 RC1 currently, but I have had random reboots ever since I started using CM 6.0 nightly. (stock kernel)
I havent been able to get any responses in the CM threads since there are so many people posting in there.
At first my reboots were only happening when I had my phone docked in the car and navigation/other video was playing. Now I seem to be getting more reboots with just web browsing or playing games.
I tried to wipe my phone and put only a few apps back on it, but that still doesnt seem to help.
Is there anyway I can figure out what is causing the reboots? Will a logcat show the problem?
Thanks
I've been having a similar issue after attempting to upgrade from fresh 3.2 to 3.3/3.4, especially when trying to connect to a wifi hotspot for the first time. This also happened to me a few months back with the cause of the issue being the gps. I was able to solve that issue by reverting back to unrooted stock and performing a master reset. I'm going to try this method again and see if it helps. I'll post whether it fixed it or not. Can you narrow down the cause of your reboots at all?
I thought originally it was app related. I flashed a new rom, and had almost no apps on there. Still had the same results. Only thing I can try is a complete wipe, and install no apps. I would need a few days where I dont need my phone to do that. That's why I was hoping there was a way to debug from logs.
I've been dealing with the same issue for about a week now. My phone started rebooting just a few times a day, but the last few days it reboots every few minutes during use (not sure if it reboots while not in use). I wiped a thousand times, flashed and reflashed a half a dozen different ROM, went from Amon to Clock and back to Amon, but nothing works. I reformatted my SD card a dozen times as well. I called Sprint last night, and they're sending me a new phone in the mail. But I want to understand/fix the problem for hubris sake.
I just ran the latest RUU and rerooted and it's still randomly rebooting.
My phone would reboot every minute on any rom but rooted stock called sprint got a replacement. Rerooted

We have gone over hhis a thousand times, and it seems (as Eric cartman would say) we are fed in the a. It is a hardware related problem that mostly occurs on rooted phones. Unrooting does bubcus. Go to sprint store, spend from cristmas to new years in line, show them the problem, and get a replacement. There have been no other solutions found.
Exactly what I would have done. Here's hoping I won't have to.

can anyone post a logcat or DDMS log?
That happened to me. Other than the android process media thing. If you go into terminal emulator and type
Su
Fix_permissions
. And let it run through it fixed any rebooting problems I had. I found it happens when running new apps. So I just run it after every app I install.

Where is the DDMS log stored?
Will the logs retain the information say 10 minutes after the reboot? I usually get the reboots in my car.
The random reboots that happened to me were from using siedio 1750, when I switched back to the stock battery and now the HTC 2600mAh battery, the problem has since now been solved.

Vibrating then crash?

Has anyone else experienced this on DK28? It's happening to me quite often.
Is it an unavoidable bug?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
are you running stock?
Mhmm, no custom Rom as of yet. Is it a stock only issue?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
What are you doing when the phone does that?
Sent from my Evo Killer!!!
Running Facebook, or running the Android market or tweetcaster or the XDA app, but it's stopped so far oddly enough.
EDIT: It still persists to happen. I still haven't figured out why. It's always when the keyboard is out typing. Swype, the Samsung Keypad, as well the GB keyboard.

I get that. Running ext 4 viper rom.
Vibrates twice then reboots.
Then when it turns on, I've went from 66 percent to 13 percent battery life for example.
Strange bug

Same as well. Either the app crashes or my phone will reboot. I reinstalled the leak again and it persists to be that way still. Hopefully the official comes out soon, but for now I'm fine with this.

Does it reboot or shut down?
It sort of sounds like a low battery shutdown. Maybe there is a problem with your battery. I'm just guessing here.
I have seen that happen from a couple of scenarios...
Not doing a wipe after going to DK28
Switching between roms and not wiping
Or flashing a rom or theme that you failed to verify the integrity of the zip before flashing.
I had this problem for a while and it seemed to get worse over time. I backed-up everything and wiped the cache and factory reset in CWM. Seems to have fixed the problem so far.

I'm going to take your approach to it and try that, hopefully it goes well for me, if not I'll just deal with it lol. Either way I have a functional phone. That vibrates and closes everything lol.
I will report that last night this happened on my walk home.
Phone kept rebooting over and over.
Phone was in my pocket and my hands were full so I could do nothing. Absolutely nothin would bring my device to life expect reinstall the rom. Even when I pushed my data backup I made while it boot looped on me, it would do the same.
So I had to start fresh. I have to say, previously I may have had a bad installation.
I went from 100 to 1 as to calibrate the battery once, no reboot yay. Also before, playing music while getting a text only muted the sound of incoming text for a plit second to where yu wouldn't know if not paying attention, sounds like a skip.
Now it decends volume while sounding the alert, and return music volume as normal.

Desire keeps locking up

I've been using Cyanongen 7.0.3 for a couple of months now. Recently the phone is acting quite strange. It's constantly lockig up(I need to remove the battery to restart it). Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Can this be caused by an app that's installed?

I have noticed the same problem with every non-sense roms i have tried (oxygen, CM, Redux and MIUI). In my case it specially occurs when I used Spotify, It stops paying music and then force-close after that the rom gets very slow, cant restart the normal way either, have to pull out the battery...
I think I've found the problem. After uninstalling JuiceDefender the problem stopped(at least for now)

My Desire phone has been doing that since it was new - last January. When I make or receive a phone call, the screen locks so that I cannot use the keyboard for an automated answering system. Finally, I can never hang up. Pressing the power button sometimes shows the hang up button for about half a second.
I sent it to the HTC agent for repair and was told nothing was wrong with it!
I have rooted the phone, to see if I could change the settings controlling the phone, but so far have had no luck. I can't use the phone as a phone!!!!!
PS. At first, I uninstalled all the apps I had collected, but the problem continued. I have also reset the phone to factory settings, but still no improvement. I wonder how many users have this sort of problem.

Reboot problem. Please HELP!

Hi all! I have a big problem with my Desire HD, since some time ago, it randomly reboots. It happens mostly when I have low battery, 15% or less, and only happens when I'm using it, but I didn't found any pattern. The screen freezes a few seconds, and then it automatically shows the power on bootanimation...
Until now I used the default ROM, and then LeeDroid HD without any problems. I recently installed RCmix3d runny 4.0, and within days started to do this. Thinking it was the ROM, I changed to Virtuous Affinity, but it seems to do the same thing...
I hope someone can help me, I need it!
Greetings to all!

I've already done it when the charge was at 100%, is it right?
That makes no changes...
think this is because of the "power prompt". (i m not using sense at the moment so can't tell u where you can find this but should be under settings somewhere)...turn it off!!

hmm what do you mean with "power prompt"?
This may sound silly, but try removing and reinserting the battery.

How many apps do you have? I have the same problem (sent it for repair) and I think that when the phone is "empty" or has little apps, all works well, that the problem starts when I install more apps. It didn't happen for several months when I bought it, and then, as I installed apps, it happened once. Then again in a month. Then it happened regulary alike 1-2-3 times a week. After flashing RUU to Sense 3 (even though it was clean install even formatted the SD card) it worked fine for 2-3 days, and when I installed like 300 apps, it started rebooting and I got it to the stage where it reboots every 5 minutes or so....

I'll try uninstalling some apps then, thanks!
Try refreshing the battery fuel gauge. what you need to do is download battery refresh from market, delete the batterystats.bin file and then use the app to drain the battery to zero until it dies. Charge it to 100% with the phone turned off and see what happens.
ROBINGAZI:
I suppose you have to be rooted to delete batterystats.bin ?

Thank you for your advice, but I don't think that's the cause, because I calibrated the battery a several of times... I'm tired of this error, so I'm moving back to a ROM with Sense 3.0 instead of 3.5, since is the only common cause I found. Thank you all anyways!

Several very weird heavy bugs (wifi, Bluetooth, calling networks)

Hey guys,
A year after replacing my Desire with an S2, I wanted to set up the old girl again, giving it to a friend of mine as her first smartphone. Well, now, all of a sudden I have several issues.
First of all: it worked absolutely fine before, up and including the day I turned it off for the last time. Back then, I took out the battery, SIM- and SD card and stored it in its box in my desk. It's rooted (no idea how I did it, hell, t'was over a year ago. I do suspect superoneclick though) and was running 2.2 until last night (more on that later).
Put it together, turned it on, sure thing: battery almost dead, so I plugged it in while checking it out. Turned on wifi, set up market so I could install some apps & updates. Well, I was in the middle of downloading some updates, when it told me there's some minor update for 2.2. I had no SD in, which was mandatory for the update, so I decided to turn it off and put in a card (while the app updates where still coming in). Well here's where it all went downhill. After reboot:
- No more wifi ("error", wifi-symbol turnes greyed-out green)
- No more Bluetooth (just won't turn on, no notification whatsoever)
- Calling one of my other phones resulted in the screen turning off, with no way of getting it back on (although the phone kept working fine, left a message on my answering machine with dead screen)
- mobile networks was activated, yet would not show in notification bar/actually connect.
Out of desperation, I then installed the official HTC 2.3.3 Rom, which - hey presto - got rid of the calling screen and mobile networks bugs.
I researched online, read a lot, and I just don't know what's going on. Bluetooth and wifi errors seem to be connected, but there's two kind of threads on that online (and here): People who run custom Roms and have that problem (I am on stock Rom, with no modification other than root) , and people who just had wifi magically turn on again after two weeks. I don't even understand how it can go from totally fine to being this busted. Was it rebooting while updating? All it updated was apps like Flash & Google streetview, after all.
But honestly, without wifi this is as good as a brick to me. I can't figure out what's wrong. I thought it was a hardware issue, because pretty much all communication was shot, but the major update to 2.3.3 sorted out two of the four issues. Well, I really need wifi. If Bluetooth is shot, I can live with that.
Is there anybody who can tell me what's busted and point me towards the next step? I'm absolutely out of ideas and can't seem to find anything that applies on Google and/or xda.
Thanks a bunch for ANY help & suggestion!

And now we have random reboots, without anything non-stock running on the phone and the device being asleep.
The hell?
Oh, of course I did hard and soft resets. Forgot to mention that.

I think it is your best shot to flash custom recovery such as 4ext and to wipe everything (you can flash it via app so no fastboot required, and it is probably best recovery). By everything, I mean every single partition including sdcard. Then try to install some other rom, for example oxygen and then test the phone. If you need instructions just say.
First of all, thanks for the quick reply!
Yeah, I was thinking about flashing cyanogenmod at one point, but all these bugs put doing that at the end of the to-do list.
Regarding instructions, I'm a bit intimidated about formating the whole thing, simply because I've never used anything like 4ext before. So if you could point me to a good tutorial...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Ok, battery is apparently totally dead, so I have to wait till I can borrow one from a friend.
A question though. You mentioned "format everything". I assume this is, what CWM lists as "format boot/system/data/cache/sdcard/sd-ext"? All of that? Including boot? Just making sure here.
Thanks a bunch!
Well, finally got to ordering a new battery. No change. Phone won't start up, no charge light (although the battery, just like the last one, gets warm).
Guess I'm looking at a major hardware failure and thus a brick
