Stock or rasbean. As for battery and performance, stock and custom will yield similar results despite what allot of people would have you believe. Also trinity kernel for the superior colors.

I'm on the final stable build of liquid smooth built from 4.1.2 and love it. It's extremely debloated (less than 100mb) but still has tons of options. It's also insanely stable and obviously... Smooth. Mind you this is my first rom on the nexus, but it has all the options cm10 had on my fascinate.
Try them all. It takes very little time and it's fun. I also wouldn't stop at those. There are so many good ROMs out there and it's fun checking them out. You have to find out what features are important and what you're willing to sacrifice.
You'll be a crackflasher before you know it.

JBsorcery. In my opinion it is the most stable ROM out there for 4.2.1 and has a ton of customizable features. What's your device? Maguro? Toro? Toro plus?
In simpler words. Maguro is to GSM. Toro is to Verizon. Toroplus is to Sprint.

I would recommend AOKP, although they are currently still making 4.2 version ( WTF TAKES SO LONG?!) they have the same costumazation like CM10 just lighter and faster. i am using them for both my 2 phones and my tablet.
I would recommend paranoid android if your looking to try something completely new for your phone, but if you prefer stock look than rasbean or atom are good ones, especially Atom since the betas for 4.2 just dropped and if its anything like it was in 4.1.2 than it would be flying.

I have been using rooted stock but I am waiting for CM10 or JB AOKP RC at least, it will probably be a while but it will be worth the wait.
I am kind of done with the flashing a ROM everyday thing. Unless it is a nightly, where i don't have to redo my whole setup again.

This is the truth. Read up on the features of each one, try flashing it and if it doesn't fit what you are looking for, try again. At some point you will find one you like or decide to stay stock until something else comes out.

Hi, Im running Rasbean Jelly, available over at euroskank, google it cause i cant post outside links yet
Its for GSM only though. Im using it with Trinity Kernel and having used several other popular JB ROMs, IMO its noticeably the fastest and very stable, has some useful features over stock too! the battery life is as good as stock, again IMO. flash it and see
Actually the battery life is better than stock, i get one and a half, two days out of a full charge, with moderate use. Before Trinity Kernel though i was charging everyday. the kernel really improves the battery life. I'll flash it with every rom from now on although i wont be leaving Rasbean in the near future!
Its all personal preference. I was on Paranoid with trinity kernel and got a full days worth of battery if that helps you out.

Yeah thats very true. I used PA with Franco Kernel on ICS and got similar battery life. used to like features galore like CM9/10, prefer closer to stock now. theres plenty of ROMs to choose from for any preference anyway.
So far Im using MiINCO and cant complain about it. Not many features but its the official suported ROM from Franco (and its kernel). Its an AOSP ROM.
AOSP with the latest binaries for me.
try this it's mine 1,5/2 days battery life with normal use (web/phone/messaging) here is the thread for info:

You don't need a lot of features, just go with stock

You want customization, cyanogen or aokp has awesome features

Hi!
I wonder which JB rom i should choose if i prefer smoothness before functions?
There are only twofunctions that i really want. First of all a T9 dialer is a requirement, I also want to change the Navbar hight so that the buttons get smaller.
Wich rom should i choose?
Thank you in advance!
Mincos was very smooth while I was using it but I found that the battery life wasn't that good. This was on v3 but test yourself

Stock. I'm all about battery life, stock + trinity is not bad in terms of smoothness. I'm still testing the battery life but so far it seems aokp + trinity is better.

Yes.
Like I always say, just go with stock if you want smoothest ROM. If you want more customization and such, that's where custom ROMs come in.
I also found that all the kernels that I've used (Stock, Air, Franco, Trinity, Popcorn) has about same battery life with some tweaks, such as undervolting, underclocking and such.

I love the extra options a custom kernel 'unlocks' though. As for the battery life, so far I haven't seen much (if any) difference between franco's kernel and stock.
Use AOKP build 1 with milestone 5 as my kernel, and i might say it flows like well butter. Tried Android Revolution Hd and AndroidMe Cm10 and found AOKP the best.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Both CM10 and AOKP feel the same to me. It's the kernel that makes the big performance differences.
As far as ROMs I like AOKP for the UI features and Franco works well for performance and battery.
Stock for battery and smoothness
i'm currently testing ARHD+FauxKernel so far so good =]

AOKP is probably your best bet. Stable and highly customizable.
I am currently on BAMF and really like it. It has a fair amount of customization, neat features and the theming extends to most apps including all gapps. Give it a whirl if the flashing urge hits. I recommend crimson themes to go with it.

Hello I'm running CNA 3.5 and loving it. I noticed this rom just now and in curious. And to be clear, this is no knock on the ROM or the OP, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
Why do you guys like the ROM so much, as opposed to CNA. Just because of the extra blacks in a few places? All those same wallpapers come with CNA anyway right? If I'm missing any differences from CNA, I want to know.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I'm also curious... I guess I'll need to read some more to understand the differences. Is there something substantially different between this, and using CNA with dark walls, kernel color tweaks and perhaps a dark theme?
Certainly, to each his/her own. Just trying to understand this.
Sent from a Galaxy Nexus far far away...
That's it, everything is just blacked out. Only other differences I have found so far are...
Messaging- is travp's messaging, has option for transforming long texts into MMS (good for messages over 160 characters) and can change soft keyboard type (smiley, send, or enter for a new line).
Wallpaper- CNA wallpapers are not included.

I have got be honest. I like every rom I have tried. 3 by ktempleton. Chameleon Os is very nice. My favorite in terms of ui. Gorgeous. But that was also the problem. Ui crashed a lot. Hopefully it gets stable. Dirty unicorns was great but the ui started crashing repeatedly.
Using liquid smooth now. It's very nice. What it has on the other 2 is that it's running stable. I think I would be on Chameleon though if it were stable.
PACman. Even better now with the make it dark toggle and toggleable slim gapps...no more looking for an inverted play store only to have it auto update and go back to white.
Running great with lightning zap kernel and modded comadose tweaks. I did have to push the zap tweaks back top init.d again tho

Yeah. What is it? Why do I want it? What's it good for? Also, the ROM is near perfect save for Bluetooth, but the dev forum is aware and I hope they're on the problem. I don't use bluetooth much anyway, but when I do, it's handy.
