[MOD] Increase Camera Audio/Video/Image Quality (Updated - 5/1/2013) - Sprint LG Optimus G

Before you do anything, DO A NANDROID BACKUP!!!!! I am not responsible for any mistakes that you make or if anything happens to your phone.
I have seen many people on here complaining about the camera/video recording and audio. So I decided to do a little research and well this is what I got. Many thanks go to mohit1234 as he actually compiled this for the Nexus 4 and I reached out and asked him if it would work for our device since they are so similar and I gave him our copy of media_profiles and this is what he suggested. I will continue to test out more values and try to make the camera the best it can be!

CHANGELOG:

2) Increase audio bitrate to 320kbps for both 720p and 1080p
3) Changed audio channels to 2 for 1080p
12/29/12
1) Doubled the image decoding memory cap to 40mb
2) Increased all image encoding quality values to 100
1/12/2013
Small tweaks, nothing really to list, just getting it polished up!
5/1/2013
1) Camera Focus tweaks, should help with blurry pictures
2) Now works with all Stock LG ROM's and all CM/AOKP/AOSP ROM's!
3) Also, added a manual install for some people to plug it in themselves below!
WARNING: Make sure you make a backup (TWRP is the only recovery that it will work on) because I messed with a few other values and got bootloops and had to restore a backup!
DEVELOPERS: You can use this to incorporate in your ROM, just please make sure you give credit. That is all I ask for.
THANKS TO: AdriVelazquez/Beezy420 for creating this ZIP to easier install the mod!

Awesome thanks!
I'll be flashing soon. But out of curiosity, how does this make image quality in pictures better? Less compression?

To my knowledge, yes. I am new to all this so don't quite know everything but just increasing some of the values will make the image size bigger and less compression.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong here?
I set the file system R/W, put the file in '/' (I'm assuming that's what's meant by 'the root of your memory') then copy/pasted the file into '/System/Etc', overwriting the existing one. When I reboot, the audio during the boot animation cuts out and the phone hangs on the last frame of the boot animation, and I have to restore from backup to get the phone to boot again. Rooted/unlocked/TWRP v2.3.2.3/stock kernel.
Thanks

Which code in the XML is directly related to camera quality for pictures? Every entry seems to be for an mp4 or 3gp file(video/audio). Hopefully I'm missing something.
I'm seeing this... but it's the same setting as stock.
Code:
<!ELEMENT ImageEncoding EMPTY>
<!ATTLIST ImageEncoding quality (90|80|70|60|50|40) #REQUIRED>
<!ELEMENT ImageDecoding EMPTY>
<!ATTLIST ImageDecoding memCap CDATA #REQUIRED>
<!ELEMENT Camera EMPTY>
<!ATTLIST Camera previewFrameRate CDATA #REQUIRED>

nothing worth showing, before and after looks identical. the after pic is about 500k-2mb larger though.

mohit1234 and I are currently working together to get some image value changes to increase image quality, should have it either tonight or tomorrow.

Has anyone tried the HX_Camera Mod?
I have not. It says it is for firmware ALF6. But I can't find the actual firmware designation on the S3 like it was on the Sensation.
I'm a bit reluctant to flash things that don't appear anywhere on XDA to begin with. Add the ALF6 story and I just don't know. Poking around inside the apk it looks legit enough, but I wonder if it's OK for a US S3.
The original article I found it in is here:

The link in the article is to an old version so this one is better:

Anyway my 64GB SD Card was defective so I don't really have space to play with it now. Hopefully next week I'll get the replacement.
If this is the mod that improves video recording as well as let's you take pics with the volume rocker I installed it. It works great

I downloaded apk renamed the original and pushed this one to system/app now video recording fails.
Edit: 1080 recording fails and camera closes. 720 and below works.
Another edit: 1920 x 1080 recording fails app closes but opens up fine after.
720 x 480 freezes as soon as you select that resolution and camera keeps freezing on reopen until I clear data. Others work.

Thank you! i have downloaded this more than 5 times and it always failed on video so i deleted it, now i know the problem, i dont care about 720p as long as it records.

This is tough, I love the volume buttons with this mode. I'm going to try and keep using it with 720p, wonder if I'll miss the 1080p.
same for me, picture camera works great along with the volume buttons as shutter, but video rec. fails
>bump<
Anyone good with editings apks wanna take a look at this? I find it pretty interesting...
I already posted this in the Q&A.. All 720 modes worked correctly for me, however only 1080P normal works, the fine and super fine functions do not, this was on my Rogers 747M.... but the 1080P normal mode is still an improvement over the stock one...and the 720 modes still gave improvement....so it's not a complete wash if you use it, you just won't get the top 1080 modes 24/30 meg/sec rates.

Is the reason it is crashing on most US Variants due to the different camera sensor? The GS3 ships with two different camera modules. One from Sony and one from Samsung. It seems most people in US have the Samsung cam.

As for which I am not sure, I know on my S2 it failed in the same spots as the S3 as well and from what I read, the camera is tied in very tight with the hardware of the phone, so maybe just like everything else N/A vs International it's programmed slightly different, but for those having issues try and install again and test the 1080p mod in normal it should work and I think it's 19 meg/sec or 20 flat don't recall 100% but it's a couple more meg over the stock 17 meg... I left a few comments about to the camera mod creator but no response...
Found this link that shows its a Sony sensor just like in the Iphone 4 S
http://www.ubergizmo.com/2012/06/samsung-galaxy-s3-and-iphone-4s-have-similar-camera-sensors/

Also I found under the Task AOKP rom I can't load the camera app at all........ just says not installed but before if I would copy it over, it would copy and work but no go at all under the AOKP...
Yea there's a thread floating around xda suggesting two different camera sensors on the s3. There are some folks lucky enough to have the Sony sensor and the rest have the Samsung sensor. You can tell by looking up the camera firmware on your phone. Mine has the zd firmware so I have the Samsung cam sensor.
Can any folks with the Sony sensor (gd) firmware confirm if the app still crashes?

Yeah I got Sammy sensor as well....

you'll need to be rooted, and use an app like Root Explorer, or any app that has a file manager that can access system level. go to System>App> and find two files, one is SamsungCamera.API and SamsungCamera.odex either change the name of both of these files (eg: SamsungCameraOLD.API and. odex) or delete them, either way SamsungCamera.API and SamsungCamera.odex should not exist anymore. now that you've done that, use that root file manger to place his hacked SamsungCamera.apk and place it in the same folder (System>App>). then restart your phone.
note* you may need to mount your R/W card, you can simply do that by the giant button at the top of Root Explorer.

If you're on a deodexed rom, then you won't have those files. Just reboot after dropping the apk in there, make sure your permissions are correct, and you'll be good to go.
What are the correct permissions? I tried flashing the zip through CWM but no go. I'm on a deodexed Rom also tried dropping the Samungcamera.apk file into system/app...
Thanks
I hear there was a camera mod that made shooting videos a much higher quality but it only worked for the international version of the GSlll. Perhaps doing it for this would be possible at a later date?

I am actually working on the higher bit-rates also. I have a few versions right now, in testing, the only issue I am running into right now is that when you use the power button for the shutter, it also triggers the power menu. It still takes the picture and all, but its an annoyance.
Has the video recorder always had that click-click sound whenever the ringer volume is on?? That's really annoying. I thought shutter sound in the camera controlled both.

CWM and TWRP installs are interchangeable in most, if not all cases. Definitely when you're talking about a simple script like this one.

[Fix] MMS Compression

Request from this thread fulfilled.
Here is a deodexed apk with a 2MB allowance. I haven't had any compression issues since. Replace your LGUSMms.apk in system/app with this one, fix permissions, reboot. Any problems let me know.
edit: 5MB with 5MP added, though keep in mind that carriers still have their own restrictions. If you really try to send a file that big, your receiver may not get it.

That's because the dimensions of the picture to be sent have not been changed, to send a higher resolution picture they would need to be changed to 2580x2048 for 5mp (which personally is a great size right around 1mb, and for 13mp it would need to be 4208x3120 (which is huge). Would be nice to have the dimensions changed for a greater resolution MMS.

This is an epic idea. I have been itching to have ISO settings, really badly. That app looks like its for ICS, but that might only be because I read the first couple posts...
Subbed.
I'd like to see if this goes anywhere. I pushed the apk to my system apps and only got FC's on the camera over and over again, gallery was fine though.

I'm not a dev, maybe someone work on it. I pushed apk to system too, as it's based on aosp, I think these features are not imposslible for us. We need to get some attraction from devs :fingers-crossed:
That work for me but I have always a better photo with stock Camera app...

Camera mod (APP)-unlimited recording (sep 20)

MUST BE ROOTED WITH FREEZAS ROOT
CHANGELOG
V1 (Sep 20)- Allows for recording up until you run out of space instead of putting a time limit on everything
V2 (Sep 20 TEST!!!)WARNING, Timelapse set to 1080x720. This is a test, I have used it without any issue but I want to make sure others don't have any issues.
backup the entire folder system/priv-app/samsungcamera6 , delete the apk, then copy this over to system/priv-app/Samsungcamera6
Download at bottom of this post
After that set the permissions (id recommend checking the original apks permissions before u delete it)
Reboot, (see if the app even shows up), then try recording 4k, it's around 21 minute record time with stock internal storage, with the 256GB sdcard it should be much more

I did that, mirrored permissions from the previous apk, restarted and got a FC. Also cleared data/cache as well on the modified camera
