Does anybody else have problems with the stock browser or the chrome browser not opening links to other pages? There are several sites including nbcnews.com(formerly msnbc) where I can tap a link such as a link to a news story and nothing happens. I can go to the same site with Opera or Dolphin and the links will work

I've had that happen when changing fonts to a non standard font..
sometimes wiping C&D will fix that..
I have this same problem but have not found a fix.
What is clear C&D?

I have had this issue on every android device I have owned and it happens with every browser I use (currently using maxthon, but also chrome and stock).
The only solution I found was to fully exit the browser and try again.
C&D is cache & dalvik cache
i had the same problem with nbcnews.com using the stock and Maxthon browsers; a temporary solution was to disable java script (Menu->Settings-Advanced-Remove check from Enable JavaScript). this at least allowed you to open links to stories, etc.

I have the modaco froyo ROM and have a sight problem.
When I load some sites, it automatically closes it down. Anyone know why?
An example site is http://www.worldcarfans.com/
Also the xda site loads, it closes the internet app down.

Just tested http://www.worldcarfans.com/ on unrooted Uk Desire and no problems here.
Have you tried clearing your browser cache then trying again.
Yes, all working now. I changed the browser settings and then back again.

Problem is still there. Think it is related to plugins.
In the broswer settings i need to set plugins to ON DEMAND. But if i do this, it cures the problem but then i cant see/use flash content on certain sites.
got it working, reinstalled flash player
the browser fc after 4.2.1 update, test it with the factory image and custom rom, same resolt
it fc on sites like android atuthority and many others..
anyone else?
I have the same issue.
Clearing the cache did not help.

Same here... with different ROMs. It started yesterday when I had a 4.1.2 custom ROM. It shows the same behaviour after wiping everything and flashing several 4.1 or 4.2.1 ROMs.
Same here. I think It's a javascript error, but disable javascript is not a good solution.
I hope it's not intentionally bug creation to make users use chrome browser.
Same here. I've even gone back and reloaded a couple of backup roms I had saved that I know worked fine and all the 3rd party browsers fc.
Hmm, I couldn't replicate the issue. Sites are opening fine for me desktop and mobile versions alike.
I have a GSM GNex, i9250, stock 4.2.1, rooted, custom recovery.

It is not FC exactly. It just closes on you. It happens to me while I browse phonearena.com

Are ther any news about this issue? It definitely does not occur on all webpages, but on some. The next thing I will try is to use a different browser.
Try disabling flash in browser settings or just switch on demand.
I noticed it closes on sites with high flash content

Thanks for the hint. What actually seems to work is disabling javascript.

I am experiencing the same issue
Jelly bean sorcery3.1 (android 4.2.1)
Phone now seems sluggish in general and the browser seems to be force closing all the time
Also getting a lot of SOD's and general unresponsiveness
Weird thing is I've been on this rom for a while and it just recently seems to be doing this
edit: my mistake, my rom is actually 4.1.2 so maybe its an unrelated problem but my browser is still extremely unstable
It seems unrelated to the android version you are running. My 4.1.2 tablet browser started crashing also recently. To complicate matters browsing in incognito mode seems to solve problems even with javascript enabled.

I have the same issue. Was on an AOSP 4.2.1 ROM and switched back to a 4.1.2 instead (fresh wipe/flash, even formatted system before flashing 4.1.2 ROM) and still getting it with the stock browser. Visited the same websites on the chrome browser and no closes. You guys are right though, it's not a normal "FC". It just closes and brings you back to the homescreen, almost like if you just hit the home button. When I go to open the browser back up, sometimes the page will load back up from scratch, but sometimes it will just bring me to blank page (my homepage) and I have to start all over to get back where I was.
EDIT:
Also commented on the link above and voted on it.
I have exactly the same issue. I just purchased the gn 2 days ago. I let it update from the stock image. I only rooted and added busybox with a to available here on xda.
With some site the browser window disappear. I also noticed that all tabs are gone when I open the browser again: it just reset all open windows.

I don't have this issue anymore.
I think that Google Play Services were auto updated. I'm not sure if this is what resolved the issue.

I've tried searching the forums for a possible solution but have had no luck thus far.
I prefer the desktop Youtube over the mobile app version but regardless on which one I use for some reason lately YT always force closes anytime I hit the play icon to watch a video. it would load for a couple seconds and then force close me out of my browser. I do have the correct flash player and I've tried various browsers installed on my phone as well as earlier versions to each but the issue continues to occur. I also tried clearing data but no luck either. Has anyone else experienced this? and if so, a possible fix? Any advice would be great.

If you're on Deviant then it's a known issue. Something with webkit Ramsay did, thought we got it under control, but I guess not.
Hmm.. ok. I wouldn't have thought it was the ROM because I've been using Deviant since it's beta release as my daily driver and it's been stable for me until today. Wasn't having this issue til now and I hadn't modified anything. Thanks for clearing this up for me though. appreciate it.

I also have stock browser crashing when it never did before. I suspect one of the google updates that went through recently since besides app updates I haven't changed anything in months and I don't think any of the apps I have is embedded deeply enough to affect the browser. I've considered nandroiding back to trace it but it's a tough one to do since the crashing is somewhat random. Btw I don't have your video app installed (Maxthon).

I have the exact same problem with my N7100. In first thought I was sure that it was a software problem and I did all the steps you mentioned in your initial post...but there I had no luck as the problem kept coming. Then I gave it a try to my local samsung service point. The first time I sent them the phone they didn;t manage to solve the problem and they onlt did a factory reset. The second time I sent it they changed the mainboard (pcb/motherboard)...I thought I was done but guess......the problem was still there! But I am ok, I am now sure that it's a software bug.
I am using the opera browser which doesn't give me the stock browser problems (boat browser is also giving problems to me)!
I unlocked/rooted my device today, and it all went smooth, but chrome seems to be crashing non stop. It will open for a few seconds, but if I touch anything or scroll it will just crash to the wallpaper with no errors. I don't *think* it was crashing prior to the root, but I'm not entirely sure. I didn't use the browser much before then. This same crash also happens to the chrome beta.
I tried clearing the chrome cache, I even did a factory reset/wipe. I haven't tried unrooting yet. That's gonna be a last resort.
Everything is stock except for the root and TWRP. (Kernel, rom, etc)
Chrome is really the only browser I seem to like on android, so getting it working is pretty important for me.

Chrome crashes even when un-rooted. I switched to Firefox for my nrw Nexus 7.

I saw a demo unit in best buy doing the same thing today! And when I tried to download any apps from playstore it gave me 497 error code. Not sure what's going on.
I can attest that the Chrome browser will freeze up or crash. Browsing this site will produce a freeze or two per session. Other sites I do not use as extensively.
I purchased my N7 because browsing on an iPad 3 gen was impossible with Safari or Chrome which I installed because Safari was so bad. Chrome on the iPad was unusable. Chrome on Windows 7 also crashes and hangs very frequently.
I use chrome and it never crashed and it pretty smooth.

Indeed I did! That's the main reason I rooted....
That could very well be the culprit, but chrome isn't worth not having xposed, so I will stick with an alternative browser for now.
Thanks!

I've not added any plugins or other extensions to Chrome on my mobile devices. An attempt to add one on the desktop version similar to what I used in Firefox ended miserably. Just crashes and freezes, similar to the experience on the N7.
