[Q] from Particle to CM7.2

Hello, I would like to know if it's safe to upgrade via cwm from the Particle Rom to CyanogenMod 7.2-GIO-KANG.
My Model is GT-S5660
Android Version 2.3.5
BaseBand is S5660XXKQ5
Kernel 2.6.35.7-perf
Compilation Nº GINGERBREAD.XXKS2.
I would also like to know what's the best app to backup all my apps+data.
Thanks in advance,
sure you can.
the particle problably is ext, so extformatterzip isnt needed...

I've gone from mod to mod my self. And if I remember correctly it was particle to 7.2. Just make sure you do the ext4 formatter before you apply the 7.2 zip.
As for backing up, a copy of titanium backup does a good job.
tooviral
edit.....5 min wait lol
Thank you for your answers!
That ext4 format you talk about, is made in the computer right?
A primary fat32 partition and a secundary ext4?

no...
if you havent got an ext4 partition wich you made on pc, you dont need to do it now...
just backup via titanium backup
then backup using clockworkmod just to be sure..
then flash cm7
then flash gapps
reboot
if stuck at android download extformatter.zip from clockworkmod thread by phiex.
if stuck at boot , wich can take about 3 mins the first time, wipe data and cache
reboot
you should boot now, restore your titanium backup
done

You might want to check things like that before you give someone advice. Particle is a modified stock ROM so it's RFS.
1. sync all contacts & calendar with Google Account
2. if u use notes from stock u must sync them with PC
3. make zip backup from CWM recovery
4. make a full backup with titanium backup with options on (full cache and full data)
5. when u restore apps - dont forget about: dont restore APP + Data if data not need or if u can fast reconfigure ur app.
6. start flashing

Unsure of answer to this question...

I have Clockwordmod Recovery installed on my GSII (T989). If I do a full backup, and then flash a custom ROM/Kernel...can I just do a complete full restore if I don't like it (from the backup I made)?
Thanks!
Well there is no cyanogen recovery so that's probably why no one is replying fyi.

So I don't have to worry about losing anything? Once I restore, it will be like I never changed anything? (Almost like an image backup of a computer)?

No i wouldnt suggest doing that when u make a back up in cwm you making a backup of that rom! If your worried about your data use either
Titanium backup or
MyBackup Pro

umm...I thought CWM recovery backed up everything...including data (excluding microSD card).
So, if I restore it, it restores the original Kernel and ROM? Is that correct?
If something goes wrong, while flashing new kernels/ROMS, I can boot into recovery and just restore?
I'm already rooted, I just want to be sure before I start messing with my device.
Thaks!

you are correct the Nandroid backup built into the CWM recovery will back up everything on your phone as it is. including any ext partition on your external SD card. (will not backup your FAT partition where your normal downloads and pictures go, as this is where the backups are stored) but your ROM, all apps and their data and anything on your EXT partition (if you have one) will be backed up.
i suggest copying the clockworkmod backup folder to your computer before flashing anything else. just in case it messes up your SD card somehow.
doing the full restore will automatically restore ROM apps and data as they were when you backed up. feel free to flash as many roms as you want, just make sure to keep your backup safe. and to wipe all data in between roms as usual.
although titanium backup is amazing. and will backup apps and their data while booted inside your rom. its amazing, check it out.
Cwm backs up everthing including rom, kernel, and data. When you restore your backup it will restore your phone the way it was the moment that you backed it up.

I have TB Pro...are you saying it will back all of my apps/data up, and I can just restore it from within my new ROM?
Correct. Just use caution when trying to restore system apps.
Good.Luck!

Dude don't sorry so much!!! Super Noob!!! JK! Well not really you are never going to want stock again...just carefully flash your desired ROM.. use TB to restore all of your apps and their data. Do a nandroid back up of your current rom then one of your favorite roms after you set it up to you liking.

[Q] smelkusMOD nand backup

I flashed the smelkusMOD Recovery instead of Clockwork as everyone seems to adamantly suggest and had a quick question about the backup. It gives me a list of things to backup. By default the first 4 are selected and the rest aren't. Clockwork just ran a backup. I want any restore to basically bring my phone back to a point in time restore with all my apps/data/settings/etc. Am I fine leaving the defaults or should I select more options?
If ur SD card is partitioned for running a2sd u are going to want to select SD ext as well. Its generally a good idea to keep a backup of ur wimax but not necessary.

[TUT] What Is Nandroid And How To Use It [Complete Guide] [VeNuM]

If you are new to Android, you probably have seen the term Nandroid used. If you are rooting your phone for the first time, or even an old crusty flashaholic, a Nandroid backup could be the difference between saving your phone or have having a $500 paper weight.
What IS a Nandroid? It is a full backup of the partitions on your device’s NAND flash (NAND actually stands for NOT AND,which in simple terms means an electronic gate). Basically a backup of your phones hard drive if you will... The Nandroid backup is a snapshot of your device (it means everything on your phone – your apps, data, your current ROM and even the kernel is backed up) at the time you do the back up. If you restore the back up, it changes your phone BACK to that state. You will need clockworkmod (CWM). So make sure prior to this you have CWM on your device.
Your SD Card data is not backed up in the process. Although the Nandroid backup itself is created on your SD card. Make sure you have enough space on your SD card to make a COMPLETE copy of your phone. It is highly recommended that once you have done a backup, you manually copy it to your computer in case your sd card is wiped or corrupted..
Pre-requisites:
1. Rooted Device:
You need a rooted android device.
2. Custom Recovery
While the OS is running you cannot do a backup. The boot loader in the recovery enables you to take a backup of the OS while it’s not running.
ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery is the example used in this tutorial.
Steps to Make a Nandroid Backup via CWM:
Backup and Restore via CWM:
1.Boot into Recovery.
2. Select ‘Backup and Restore’ from the recovery screen.
Once you are in recovery, scroll down to the option ‘Backup and Recovery’ and select it. You can scroll up/down through the menu using the volume buttons and select options using the power button.
3. Start the backup.
Once you are on the Nandroid screen, select ‘Backup’ to start the backup process. You have the option to restore backup on the same screen.
The backup process may take a while. Be PATIENT.
4. Transfer the backup to your computer (optional but recommended).
Once you reboot, you can see the backup in the ‘clockworkmod/backup/timestamp’ (or similar file) directory on your SD card.
Move, copy, or paste this folder on your PC safely.
It’s THAT simple…
Restore from a Nandroid Backup via CWM:
1. Boot your device into CWM and navigate to the Nandroid screen.
2. Choose ‘Restore’ and begin the process.
If you select ‘Advanced Restore’option, you may select which part of the backup to restore – i. e. the boot, system, data or cache. Or choose the whole backup.
3. Reboot your device. Your system is now restored and is exactly the same as the time when the backup was taken.
Final Thoughts:
If you are planning on rooting your phone or even a hard core flashaholic it is essential you use this painless and easy tool to save you when you need it. As noted above you can even revert back to just the kernel, data or whatever that could become corrupt or just plain messed up in the future. I hope this helps you and happy flashing!! - VeNuM
Once again another well written tutorial VeNuM. Going to add this to my list of articles to point people to. Just hope the ones who really need it will actually look here first. Thanks again.
Nice guide VeNuM, will definetly help with the noobs
VeNuM,
This is an awesome Tutorial - thanks for taking the time to write it.
Hi, thanks for a nice simple guide.
After flashing speedmod k3-7 on Criskelo v8 I have lost root.
I would like to restore to before I flashed speedmod to regain root.
Is it possible to restore a nandroid if I don't have full root?
What part should I restore to regain root?
Or do you know a Better way to regain root?
I'm still a noob, so I really appreciate all info I get. Don't want to mess this up.

Venum used CWM as an example, but no, stock recovery wont work. Youll need a custom.
The op prerequisites are pretty clear. ^^^^ Look up at the op..

So what if I have expensive taste on paper weights? You got a problem?
Great tutorial, I know how to use it already but this should defiantely encourage more people to use nandroid making you the saviour of a lot of money.
As always, great tutorial. I've used it to make a backup, but thankfully never had to use it to restore. This does lead me to 2 follow up questions/scenarios:
1. The backup is provided you can get into CWM. What if the phone can't get into CWM and is "hard bricked"? Then I assume in this case you can't do anything, correct? What if you have the backup file on your PC as you suggested. Could you somehow through ODIN restore the backup file without access to CWM (provided the phone is recognized in ODIN)? Or would you have to use ODIN to restore, get it up an running, then install CWM, then use your backup to revert back? I guess it all comes down to if it's recognized or not in ODIN, if it is, then you're not really hard bricked; but if it isn't, your SOL?
2. If the phone can boot up, and let's say is stuck in a boot loop where it doesn't get into the rom, but can get into CWM, but the backup is corrupted. How would you transfer from your PC the backup without being able to "mount" the SD card to transfer it. Obviously with an external SD it's no problem, but what if you only use the internal?
Thankfully, I've never experienced any of the issues above, I'm just curious on the answers. Thanks guys.
Possible Sticky? Great guide, thanks!
Great tut. Just one question... Does the nand backup also create a backup of the internal sdcard ie /sdcard

Wouldn't think that the backup calls to have the storage included. Not that I've seen anyway. That could lead to insufficient space for the backup itself. kernal, modem and ROM are what I believe to be in the backup.
Odd, cause I always pull everything out of storage and pictures to my laptop before doing a nand or anything. Just in case..

Awesome, thank you for the great explanation. What does it mean when people create a stock nandroid? Are they reverting back to a stock ROM for the backup?

As he said yes. You want a version that will bring you back to stock. So you can start over... Hopefully you will never need to use it...
Using agats kernal recovery it saves backups as .tar I'd there a way to fix? I've never used Odin so .tar are useless to me. I need the .zips

Quick question on restoring nandroid backup

Hello everyone I just have a quick question which I probably know the answer but just want some verification (and sry if there kinda stupid questions lol)
I'm using philiz touch recovery and I'm currently on ezkat v2 but I want to give cm11 or any AOSP ROM a try.
Just wondering, if I want to restore my backup of ezkat; when restoring do I need to wipe and factory reset or just go to the restore option in recovery? And with restoring a nandroid backup will everything (even the kernel) be like it was before I flash cm11
Thanks for any help and clarification I never had to restore a backup so this is new to me lol
