On my Sprint Galaxy Nexus when I first got it the stock wifi tethering setting worked on my stock ICS. Later on I found that it just doesn't work anymore. It will activate and appear to be working and let my laptop connect but the 3G will go away like they have some kind of built in checker.
I did some research and found out that they might have a checking system set up. Well I found out you can still use apps like Foxfi which is great but I was just wondering if there was a stock work around.
They even blocked Foxfi from the market place but you can go to there main site and download it from there.
I was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this and what kind of solutions do they use.
Right now I am using Foxfi which works perfect but I read that you can use a widget like switch pro and create a toggle to switch the portable wifi hot spot without it going through the check.
I do not want to use USB only prefer hot spot.
So please let me know all of your guys types of solutions.

Well obviously the wifi tether built in is something your supposed to pay for. For stock no, there are no mods.

I thought it was just weird because it worked at first but now it doesn't the stock version. Maybe because my phone was just still getting set up. Foxfi works for me great because I like to have hot spot but I hear PDA Net still works as well for USB Tethering.

Does your Sprint tether work or do you have to use FoxFi?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Just root it and tether it up

It probably worked because they hadn't yet blocked it for you. Then you tried to use it and they did block it.

Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658288
I unlocked the bootloader, booted to TWRP Recovery without flashing it and flashed the tether zip. Keeps your phone stock and unlocks the built in tether. You don't even have to root.
What program do you use to unlock the boot loader or flash the roms?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
How in the world did you boot into TWRP without flashing it? That might not be rooted but seems like you have to flash a rom.

Do what everyone else does....
Root it (you really need to to install any decent app).
Install wireless tether from http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
Always install the newest one posted (yes it's beta, but it's rock solid stable).
Which program do you use to flash things? Qdl tool or is that old school? I know there is a power house program for the Nexus but I forgot what it is its on my home computer am I out of town.
So you are saying you have to at least flash the recovery but not the from so its still a little more than FoxFi.
What's a quick step by step process because its been a while since I have flashed things. I use to flash my dell streak all the time until I got my Nexus which I love.
Why did you decide to flash? Is not FoxFi good enough and simple enough?

What other programs do you really need to install besides the tethering app?

You just have to be rooted and then install wireless tether.
It will prompt you to allow super user access on first start, allow it and tick the "always allow this action" box.
It's bomb proof....been using it for years on numerous different phones....and numerous different carriers (sprint included).
clockworkmod tether is another no root required tether app.

I use Chrome browser on my laptop, and change the user agent to the same as the phone (there's a Chrome app). No problems tethering...
Is that USB or Hot Spot?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
Looks like FoxFi is still the easiest solution.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium App
You can root your phone and then install wifi tether. Thus is what I did...

I have looked and searched through this forum and the dev forum and I can't find a fix for my issue. I load up from the store and install ok, give it root permissions set the profile, and it works, turn it off and back on and it doesn't work, seems if I change the profile sometimes it works again but never twice in a row with the same profile.
Any ideas.
I have tried the access control thing thinking that would help but no luck.
Try Clearing data. Use Generic ICS and select routing fix.

Same deal worked first time then nothing shows up in SSID List.
But just tried the same thing and use the Nexsus cdma/lte one and it works now every time.

This is how I got mine working, by using the galaxy nexus lte profile. I had trouble at first, but it's worked fine ever since I selected that profile.
omg, I've been trying to make wifi tethering work all night. Did as bluebeast suggested using the nexus profile and it works perfectly! thx

I am using the Samsung Galaxy S3 profile on mine. I found that it works the same as a hidden SSID. I was able to successfully connect from my laptop, even though the SSID did not show in the available networks list. I actually prefer this, as I believe it makes my tethering more secure. Now that I've saved the profile, my laptop & other devices connect automatically.

Sadly, having a hidden SSID is really only going to keep the old ladies out. much in the same way I like to believe having MAC address filtering makes me secure. Depending on where and how you use it though is everything.
That's true, but it is the first layer of additional security.

It's included in my plan as well and I'm on AT&T. Not sure if it's a Premier thing though, but my data plan came with hotspot as part of it, and it's not the data sharing plan.
When I tried to enable it, it told me to call 611 to activate it.
+1 for foxfi on ATT.
AT&T will force you to give up unlimited data plans to enable this from them and it's another $15 USD / month. I believe the context of the OP is without carrier plan.
If you have no unlimited data and can stomach the $15/mo, more power to you.
Foxfi doesn't work for me but I found a way to get native tethering work on this phone but your phone has to be rooted to do that:
1. First you need to delete TetherProvision.apk system app. Either by root explorer or TB. Removing this might cause a FC when you try to turn Mobile Hotspot on in Settings (happened to me) but keep on reading.
2. Go to Google Play store and install Power Toggle and add the Wifi tether widget to your Homescreen.
3. Boom ^_^.
Excellent! Thank you for finding this.
Or flash 15 toggles from the Development thread. Mobile Hotpot built in + flash light and others

Have you tried this out then? Are you on a T-Mobile base? Was the flashable the one posted by evilart?
Sorry for the questions there, I've been curious about this myself
Yes I tried it out. I did a TWRP back up first, flashed the zip, went in and enabled bluetooth tether and tried it out using my tablet. I like to tether this way cause it uses allot less power on both devices. The only thing I don't know is if this change circumvents provisioning checks as I am paying for tethering anyway. I would love to see feedback from users that are not provisioned for tethering try it.
Forgot to mention, I am on stock Tmobile deodexed rom. Yes it was the one posted by evilart.
DO you have the file anymore, I have the T-mobile note 3 and would, and it would be great if you can email or post it somewhere I can download it.
thank you

I would have to look for it. Been using the international version of 4.4.2 for the note 3 and so it's not needed. It has native bluetooth tethering and works out of the box. I'll let you know if I come across it.
I have bluetooth tethering working with Tmo note3 on Jedi/saber and Gear on latest Null Rom. It does drain the battery....really fast. only really do it for short periods. otherwise, I use combination of wondershare and bluetooth file transfer for everything else.
What ROM do you guys recommend to get Bluetooth tethering on T-Mobile note 3 for gear ?

Tethering to Omate True Smart
HI.
I have an Omate True smart that im wanting to tether to my at&t note 3 (SM-N900A). Ive tethered to TS to my note 3 via Foxfi bluetooth, and it works great! however when i try to connect via the bluetooth menu on my phone, (i see the option "internet access" under profiles) it gives me this error on my watch "network access points service of SAMSUNG-SM-N900A is unavailable" Any thoughts on why i would be getting this message?
Well what a tease your carrier is.
cheers! working fine on me
How do you get it to work?
Oh!!!!!! its work. Thanks for your post.:highfive:

LS,
Last week I had a Samsung Expert @ Best Buy to upgrade my I-747 to Android 4.3. The phone is working perfect since then, even the battery drain is NOT an issue, in fact I noticed that battery last longer now. Even the good performance so far, I have 2 issues:
Each time my S3 connects to wifi, I get a notification of 2 particular files DOWNLOAD COMPLETE however these PDF files were donwloaded months ago. I clear the notification area, but when I switch from 4G to wifi or visa versa, I get the notifications back.
I'm unable to activate hotspot
Any ideas how to solve this...?
Try clearing the cache of download manager.....that usually fixes those problems.....as for the WiFi thing you may need to be rooted and use a third party hotspot app

@CrazyMonkey: Clearing the Download Manager helped solve the issue; I didn't think about that :cyclops: :good:
As for the hotspot, the stock "Tethering and portable hotspot" never worked, so I downloaded a widget from Sharp Communications (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sharp_eu.ste.wifihotspot) and hotspot worked with no problem.
Since the upgrade to 4.3, when I turn on the widget, I get the same error as the stock is giving me "Mobile data is not available or invalid SIM".
