Ok so I have a Telus model and this started a few days ago when I flashed an AOKP rom...
So, I don't get LTE in my area and have always had 4G (or whatever they say it is).. Ive flashed many TW roms and ALL the roms have displayed 4g...and for not having lte, ive been very impressed with the speeds.
However, since this AOKP rom I installed (which was awesome, just wanted to go back to TW), it displayed H+...
Now, I know what h/h+ is and all that jazz about the carriers.. My issue is, can't flash any TW rom now without getting 3g/h/h+ toggling back and forth nonstop and the speeds are horrible!!! Can barely download in the store and loading a page takes a while.....and yes, I realize that its supposed to help with battery and whatnot but I don't like it and just want 4G back!!! lol
So far, I can only get 4g back when I unroot and do a hard factory reset...
And even then, it still shows h/H+ until I go through all the system updates.... then, I go to install another TW rom and I'm back with the h/h+ again...
I have tried the att fix, installing latest modem and still no luck.
I even asked to do a factory reset on my fathers phone (we are on the same family plan) and his shows 4g even when installing any TW rom...
Does anyone out there know what I did wrong?? also, my imei number is fine..
Thanks in advance to any advice or help

Yes apn checks out just and on LTE/GSM/WCDMA.
Its weird becase my father has the exact same settings. And again, showing his 4g.
As I type this, im on 3g and when I send, it will turn to h+. Speed is horrible

So it constantly switches between 3g, H, and H+ ? Have you downloaded a network signal app to see what kind of signal you are getting and strong it really is ?
When you say you have done a complete unroot and factory reset, what method are you using ? Is this where to flash an unrooted stock firmware from lets say Sam Mobile and then done a factory reset ? Or are you just doing another type of unroot ? When you root what method are you using ?
You stated you are on a Telus model but flashed an at&t modem ? Are you on AT&T service ?

Getting 5753kbps download and 905kbps upload .
Whereas before my kbps were always around 11-12000kbps for the download speeds.
I always flash back to stock rom using odin and then factory reset.
Oh sorry if I stated that wrong. I tried an att fix as well as flashing the most recent modem for my telus device but both fixes did nothing.
Again tho, ive done this so many times with TW roms and cant figure it out..
Im currently trying to go back to stock and use the most recent CWM to flash and see if that helps

It doesn't seem to make sense that even after going back to stock unrooted 4.0.4 (or what ever it cmae with from the factory) you still have signal problems as the odin packages would flash the correct modem once you install.
Sounds like network issues.
Speeds of ~9000kb are actually pretty standard for actual usage with H+/H/3G. Don't worry about speed too much. And for future reference 4G is H+, its just another name for it. The common misconception is that 4G is LTE which it is not.

Thank you for your reply.. yes I know what it means and its pretty cool. But again, my father and I are on the same plan, with telus with same phones. Going back to stock rom with odin still shows h/h+ when it should show 4g. I kniw they are the same, but the fast dormacy is a pain in the rear. My father and I are currently running the same rom with the same service getting 4g on his and h/h+ on mine

No kidding!! Ive done this a thousand times and have never seen it before..so starting to grt frustrated when told that its normal lol..
So when I get to 4.0.4 its still h/h+, but when I update the first time from samsung, it then shows 4g and my speeds are back to normal. But then as soon as I flash afyer rooting, it gies right back to h/h+ fast dormacy with no way of going back unless i do a hard factory reset again.

Are you sure it is the exact same version that you are running? He didn't update at all, no matter how small the update? If you flash from odin, everything that you did in the past should be overwritten. Go to settings->about phone and tell me what both of your baseband/build versions are

Btw.. I downloaded the whole odin/telus stock tar md5 and recovery about a year ago and have been using that for both of our phones. I will update in a coupke of hours
Also, when I flash back to stock and get the 4g back is there a way to save the modem and/or other files needed to bring over to another rom?
Ok so here is the image I took of my phone info..
I would have to put my fathers back to stock to see if there are the same... but Im now on 4.0.4 with h/h+ still present. Im gonna do a hard factory reset to get the 4G back and then see about trying other things.

Yes, this I understand... but with the 4G displaying, I get NO fast dormancy causing download issues and on top of that, my download speeds are 11-12000kbps.. when showing h/h+, Im getting half the speeds and constant toggling from 3g/h/h+ is driving me up the wall!!
again, Ive never seen this on my Telus TW roms..
I will be unrooting and going back to stock with odin...then doing a factory reset..it will still show the h/h+ unless I do 1 of 2 things....either do a hard factory reset using *2767*3855#, or by simply doing a Samsung update...then after one of those, 4G will be back and so will my speeds.

general rule of thumb, touchwiz roms cannot be built from source. The only way to mess with these roms is with winzipping and adding apps (i call it bloatware) to be honest, if you want customization go to AOSP. Every single time I use a touchwiz rom no matter how smooth its says it is, I get crashes, bugs, irreversible issues like you have, loss of connectivity, the list goes on. Thats all because of the limitations of not having source code, I would recommend you drop the touchjizz and find an AOSP rom you like, if not, stock rom is the way to go.

Hey just curious.. I was reading about going back to stock and making a copy of the qcn??
Can anyone confirm that copying this and then injecting it after a flash would work?

That your opinion is somehow fact. That somehow using a TW rom will just give you bugs and ruin your phone, as if a custom rom doesn't have glaring bugs as well. It's quite awesome the amount of customization that the dev's on the touchwiz rom's are able to inject into their rom's. Anyonr who thinks it's just unzipping files and adding apk's is uninformed. Is it on the level of PA or AOKP of course not but with more customization you add the possibility and almost the certainty that you have bugs and instability. We are quite spoiled on the i747 that we have kt and Task developing rock solid custom rom's. Most out there don't have that pleasure. If a TW rom on here is unstable it's because the dev has fallen short some where. I'd say I fall in this category and I am certainly no dev, just a noob cook. Equating TW rom's from 2.2 to the ones we have now is just fallacy. I do agree not having the source code put's dev's on the
In general I have had to deal with more bugs and instability with custom rom's than I have with a stock based rom (stock meaning what came on the phone). Yet that is not a gripe but merely the fact that I don't like to deal with the little things that pop up on custom rom's, and I prefer the aesthetics of TW. Crazy I know as many find it ugly.
I have a friend that updated his T999 to Android 4.3, after that some problems with wi-fi have appeared. The phone automatically connects and disconnects to the routers, and he has missed several things for that. I am a newbie and no developer but I have flashed many custom roms in some devices and I tend to favor CM and Slim Roms. My question is, if I flash a custom rom in the phone, will the wi-fi problems be gone? He doesn't want to try custom roms because he will lose all of his apps although I told him that he doesn't have to worry. Also, I know this is a stupid question but if I flash a custom rom, will he lose his network connectivity/ability to make calls? Most of the roms I have flashed have been in tablets and cdma phones but this is my first one and his phone isn't locked to T-mobile, he uses a different network because his T999 is unlocked. Sorry for my bad english
He won't lose network connectivity, but first make sure that auto network switch is deselected in WiFi settings and see if that fixes the problem

You could back up the apps to ext SD card. Then do a factory reset. Sometimes settings get messed with and A factory reset will put the settings back to stock. But if that don't work you will have to do a reset anyways to flash a custom rom. A custom rom could help... You shouldn't have any connect ability issues with a flashed rom I have used pac man, CM, beanstalk, custom stockers and always had wifi data and network. If you do your homework on the rom you want to use in the forum here you will know what will and will not work. And can see what people are having issues with and what they do to fix each problem.
My phone has been acting weird ever since I got my power button replaced a while back. So anyway my problem is that my phone will show that it has like five bars and then just drop to zero bars/no signal. I've tried different radios, stock gingerbread and stock jellybean. I'm currently running cm11 after I came from stock jellybean. I've tried a new sim card no difference. Any suggestions is my radio going bad?

Old but if it helps in any way, it may be the sim card /sd card board, u may have to replace it.
I started to experiment with different custom ROMs available for the d2att (now, apparently called the d2lte). My phone is using TeamWin 2.6.3.1 for recovery, I have been using it for everything. So far I have only been familiar with two certain ROMs: Cyanogenmod and CarbonROM. I have not flashed anything except for the recovery.
I complete the installation of my new ROM by first wiping cache, dalvik, data and system. My ROMs are stored on an external SD.
CarbonROM was the first one to be installed, but I found it quite buggy and unstable. I have since been using different snapshots of CM to test functionality and stability...since I plan to hang up my LG G2 and start using my SGS3 w/7200mAh battery as my daily phone. So it needs to be very reliable. I also enjoy picking with settings so the more settings the better.
So, question number #1:
When I install CM the normal way, add my APN, and select the proper mobile network mode, how come I cannot get a signal, no matter what I try? I have searched around many forums for the answer to this...many have nothing to do with my problem or are using different phones. I can confirm my SIM card works, as it was used in my LG G2. Carrier is Virgin Mobile Canada. Network mode is GSM/WCDMA Auto. It does not work with any other modes including Global.
Q #2:
If I plan on using custom KK (4.4.2) ROMs, is there anything extra I need to flash to the phone in order for the cell radio to work successfully? When I researched this, I found lots of people talking about flashing a custom bootloader, but I could not find an exact answer to my question. I would rather not brick my phone by attempting this blindly.
Q #3:
Since I am looking for a reliable custom ROM, is CM the best developer to choose? Is there a more reliable ROM out there?
Mike
EDIT: I did more reaseach on bootloaders and modem firmware and found that my bootloader is already at the most recent version. I did find however that my modem firmware was out of date, so I updated from UEMK5 to UEND3. This however did not solve my problem as I still have no service...
I am contemplating now about starting from scratch and wiping my internal storage... will this help or is it unnecessary?
For question # 1, do you have a proper imei after installing CM11? You can check it in the dialer by typing in *#06#.
For question #2, the modem must be compatible with the bootloader. Custom ROMs will only install if the phone has a compatible bootloader.
For question #2, I prefer Validus which is an AOSP-based ROM.

I have an IMEI number. That is what has me kind of confused...everything is there to show signal, it's just that it will not pick up a tower. When I throw a SIM card in it recognizes it. One thing to also mention is it pins the signal at 0, -1, or 258692378... or another outrageous number.
First things first have you followed the method of going back to a stock TW ROM, obtaining a GPS lock, and then flashed your Custom KitKat rom?

I am now on stock 4.3 firmware. I have obtained a GPS lock.
No service at all.
But... I had a funny feeling, so I went into stock android recovery and wiped cache...and voila, service!
Only problem is, I'm losing it almost constantly. The only way to fix it is by wiping the cache, but I can't keep doing that whenever I lose service.
Will I be okay to flash the custom recovery and custom ROM at this point?
Do you have the latest modem installed?

If you are still on the Stock TW ROM here is a method to try. It will clear most of your mobile data problems.
1. Enter the Samsung service mode by typing this code into the dial pad *#197328640#
2. Then go to Mainmenu>UMTS>Common>NV REBUILD>NV REBUILD> (Important: don't exit the menu yet!)
3. Wait 30+ sec
4. Long press power button and select "Restart / Reboot"
5. Now check your GPS from any software that may use GPS like "Maps" or "GPS Status"
Credit: S3Rx ROM Development Thread.
EDIT: Afterwards you should be good to go on your custom ROM. This issue seems to have arisen when a d2lte build broke most people's LTE/Mobile data.

I have found the problem with the service. I live in an area where signal is not too great. My LG G2 has a tendency to pick up the correct tower for my area, but my Galaxy S3 does not choose the same tower... It looks for one in a completely different direction.
Forgive me, this thread is going to take a bit of a turn.
Is there any way to choose which cell tower the phone connects to? In my area there is one directly east and the other is directly west. I need the western tower in order to make/receive calls/text and in order to get any data reception. Right now where my phone sits, it does not connect to the western tower so I cannot use it. I used OpenSignal to observe which tower both phones connect to.
The other issue I found is my extended battery (Anker 7200) also interferes with reception quite a bit. In town, it's not noticeable. But out on my acreage it stops my phone from getting any signal. I compared it to my LG G2 and my Galaxy S3 with the old 2100mAh battery. The G2 hovers around -95, S3 w/OEM battery at -101 and the S3 w/Anker battery at -113 (no service).

Hmm. Out of curiosity, have you tried a different ROM on 4.4.2? I've had weird issues with ROMs and signal, ie MIUI caused me to have my signal cut in and out at random intervals. Worth a shot at least. I've been using SlimKat if you want one for reference (probably the quickest download due to size).
Unfortunately all I can suggest is trying to play with tasker and seeing if you can get it to skip over the crap tower, but to my knowledge there's no way to prevent connection to said tower.
I guess if you wanna get into a gray area you could modify said tower....but I claim no responsibility for your actions with that

I've been using Liquidsmooth the past few nights and am losing signal more than ever.
Would the OS control how the modem is used? I would think that it's hardware only that changes how and when you get service.
I'm going to try the UEND3 modem firmware and see if that makes a difference. Also going to try SlimKat like you suggested.
I was wondering if there was a way to completely delete or remove Mobile Network off the phone using root browser or whatever, or turning my rooted Sprint Galaxy s3 into a WIFI only Device, where at the top it only shows WIFI not Networks. if this makes any sense. I Dont have Service on this phone.
On a custom AOSP ROM you can..... On TW roms you can probably go into airplane mode but keep wifi on, and it should work the same.

with an Xposed module i believe even in TW roms you can hide the WiFi icon itself but idk about completely removing it
Basically what I'm trying to do is to make my galaxy s3 WiFi only device. I managed to remove the activation stuff off, now I'm trying to see if I can completely remove the data bars and stuff. I know you said with a Rom I should be able to do something is there a particular mod or rom you would recommend for this. I have use vanity, Pac rom and hellfire but I'm finding that the rooms are overheating my phone. Right now I'm running stocked rooted 4.4.2 odexed

On a custom AOSP ROM you can..... On TW roms you can probably go into airplane mode but keep wifi on, and it should work the same.

try CarbonRom latest build or you can ask on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2634672 the thread here if you can do that since CarbonRom is one of the most customizable roms
