Jellybean Wifi Drain worse than ICS - HTC One X

Ive tried CM10 and AOKP Jellybean based ROMS with kernels like faux's, trips and ncx, but always had the same issue - Wifi kills my battery by evening.
On ICS Roms (ARHD and OrDroid), i was able to keep wifi sleep to "never"and it would use less battery than cellular data networks. While im at work, i need to use wifi since there no data coverage there anyway. With OrDroid on stock kernel, i currently get around 3hrs of screen time, 30 mins of Talk, and wifi is on for around 7-8 hours just for mail and chat.
Has anyone been able to use the wifi on Jellybean ROMs without suffering from a bad drain ? I dont think allowing it to sleep helps much since i would like to know immediately when an email or a Whatsapp message comes in.
Really would appreciate info on this. thanks!

Hoping for some clarification. Does anyone here run Jellybean Wifi throughout the day without significant battery drain ?

As far as I know, AOSP based roms always have less battery life than sense based roms. Are you able to flash any of the sense based JB roms? I used OrDroid v10 and v11 for a while and had excellent battery life and screen on time. That was with mobile data on. WiFi was even better.

Thanks for the input!
So it isn't a generic problem, and I must have had something else factoring in here. I think my CID is supported, but I haven't bothered updating firmware after reading one user review about poor wifi battery life in the ordroid thread.
Even on aosp jb roms, i had decent battery life as long as i didnt use wifi. Did you use wifi over an extended period, like the whole day, and still have decent performance?
If you're certain that ordroid delivers the same wifi battery life on jb and ics, ill take the plunge!
Thanks!

I'm stock and I haven't noticed any difference between ICS and JB. I'm usually connected to WiFi and always leave it "on".

Keep WiFi on during sleep: Always
Best WiFi performance: on

Ive been using pabx's JB Rom for any Hboot 4.2.1 AOSP and not having any issues with wifi drain on jellybean. Thought id post it here so anyone else searching with the same problem can try it out. In fact, i got 3.5hrs of screen time which is something ive never seen in my life!
The link to the rom is below.

[Q] wifi battery drain

I always used to have much higher battery drain when on wifi than when on 2g/3g when idle with the same sync settings etc. When the screen is on and i am using the phone, the drain seems to be identical. Is this normal? Is there a setting or something that prevents the wifi from draining the battery too much when on idle?
Mind you that the same problem has always been there for me even before i was rooted...
Thanks in advance for any responses
on my phone is the same.
i believe its normal cause wifi sends a signal. 2g/3g uses the same like the network.

The reason i was asking is because i have read some people said that they had better battery life with wifi on than with mobile data...

Go into WiFi Advanced settings and have a look if Best Wifi mode is on or something like that. I haven't used Sense in a while so I can't remember what it's called exactly.
For me the difference between having that on and off was about 65mA which is huge compared to around 5mA, this is in standby.

I have "best wifi performance" off mate...
To tell you the truth when i had it on the drain was about the same and also I did not notice any major difference in the actual wifi performance...

Oh yep I had the exact same issue which went away after I moved to CM7. So pretty much only advice I can give you is to do a backup and try a different ROM and see if the same thing happens.

[Q] Dinc2 Battery Issue Sleuth?

My wife's Dinc2 all of a sudden went from going two days on a charge to barely getting 6 hours.
Anyone recommend any programs to monitor battery usage more intensely? She is not rooted. The battery stats for some reason say that the Calendar is being used more than anything else... which is strange. She claims she doesn't use the calendar, so I am wondering what app is using the Calendar.
Any ideas?

Check accounts and sync.. it might be the Google calendar syncing nonstop. My wife had a similiar issue.. I honestly would verify all your sync's

The weird thing is... I have sync turned off completely.
She got a promotional deal to get $20 a month data plan for only 300mb, so I turn off mobile data and she only uses data at home. So I have sync completely off.

Check the battery use under about phone

Yeah, I have been doing that... is there any other program which logs what apps use what services or other apps?
Again the calendar seems to take up the most battery life under Battery Use in About phone.
I would recommend you do a full wipe. That is the only way to make sure it is the battery and not the phone.

I would agree.. a factory reset might be just the thing. There is also a master reset on addition's website... They make you do it before you file a claim most of the time

When you say she only uses data at home, do you mean via WiFi? If so, there's another possibility.
In Wifi Settings screen, tap menu|advanced and turn OFF "Best WiFi performance." I had inadvertently turned this on and found my phone sucking battery juice so fast you could almost hear it. Now that I turned the "best" off, I get a couple of days of battery. Unless you're streaming movies or doing something similar, the regular wifi performance works just fine.
I will put in another vote for full wipe/factory reset unless you're rooted. then I would suggest trying wipe battery stats first.
If it persists, batteries are cheap on amazon/ebay. No biggie.
"Best Wifi Performance" is off, so no luck there.
I started backing up her settings (sms, launcher settings etc) and I'm going to try a factory wipe soon on it.
Considering rooting it and installing a custom ROM, whats the vote for the most stable/basic with great battery life?

If you want more stock style, andyboneSTOCK. Or nitsuj gingerbangsense. I put Andy on my wife's phone, debloated and used nitsuj 3.0 patch and it works great. Nitsuj's rom with his patch works perfect too. Got the #21 kernel UV -50mv. I'm also hearing a lot of good from sabotage, but I have little experience with it. I'm currently using miui with aeroevan .07 kernel and my battery is insane but, miui is aosp. If you want a really pretty/stable rom you can go with either mikrunny or newts Inc 2 HD rom. Very nice 3.5 roms

Check & if necessary, turn off some of the running widgets that might be running (including those fancy, colorful HTC ones pre-installed with various Scene/Skin/Lock Screen & Live Wallpapers (which apparently drain faster than those with a simple, stationary background) - updates under the Sense Clock/Weather widget? News app. with breaking news alert & auto-update and Gmail/Email Apps - Push & Settings for Off-Peak Update, Facebook & Tweeter, etc. Are there any VZW bloatwares running - i.e. Backups? If all of those seemed routine & nothing out of the ordinary, getting S-OFF and rooted, and you can get a near 100% stock Sense ROM with nice tweaks - with better battery life and excellent functionalty.
Just going to give a biased & partial snapshot of mine: having flashed a # of ROMs but decided to stick with Sense 2.1/3.0 only as I need to preserve GSM/global phone functionality for travel & work purposes:
RMK's GingerSense is good old reliable, like stock without all the extra non-sense, nearly up-to-date with most and the rest is easily updated via Market. It's one of the 1st. ones that I put on mine: set & forget as a daily ROM.
andybonesStock, rooted & tweaked, has all the latest OTA incorporated and easy to strip all unneeded/unwanted components, and has good review. If I wanted to look stock, this is what I will go back to.
Sabotage Sense came out recently, and is very good, fast & responsive, and has the latest OTA, support OC kernel and reliable, and more tweaks coming with next verison due out soon. Got it running on one of ours - very good battery life & great Quadrant scores (1500's) for benchmark purposes. I believe more goodies will come in the weeks/months ahead.
Skyraider's Zeus V1.3 (google for the site) out since last Nov. - Sense 2.1/3.0 patched, lots of goodies too (more than Sabotage/sorry, CS for that - yours is great) and plenty of customization, the latest OTA should be out with V1.35 due out soon anytime. It just work & excellent battery life - easily 30 to 50 hours on average, to as much as 60 to 75 hours on a stock battery with tweaks & settings optimized. Got it running on our other DI2, flashed the newest radio & OC kernel #21, it's a solid daily workforce, has Quadrant scores as high as 1750's with a -65 dbM 3G signal (typical 1500-1600's).
With these 4 Roms, APN-SMS-MMS, WiFi, 3G and other vital elements work flawlessly, *228 worked when needed to update PRL, and Accounts sync. nicely without patches or workarounds - it will function as if you are running stock, majority won't even noticed that you are running a customized ROM. In real life, both of our phones can go 2 full days before going back on the charger unless Maps/Nav or YouTube/Hulu (or other data intensive) was running as those apps will drain it much faster.

[Q] AOSP and WiFi?

I am running OMFGB now, and just came off of AOKP ICS #31. With both ROMs, wifi seems to hurt battery life, while on the stock HTC ROM, I got better battery life from leaving WiFi on. For the record, this is talking about WiFi always on, and always being connected to a network. Why does the stock ROM hanlde WiFi better?
I'm on aero ICS build and i get 2 days with limited use. I always keep wifi on and connected. I can't say, I get the same problems you do.

[Q] Keep Wifi alive on JB

I've upgraded to JB, and absolutely love it. Only one thing I cannot figure out after searching extensively and trying out countless apps, is how to force WiFi to stay on at all times. I need it on for incoming VOIP calls. Seems that for me in JB that is really hard to accomplish, where on 2.2 and 2.3 I had no problems. I'm running JRN84D JB with the 3.0.31 Franco kernel on a GSM GN.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Have you checked Settings > WiFi > 3 dots > Advanced > Keep WiFi on during sleep?
From what I understand, from Honeycomb on, even with this option enabled, Android has been programmed for this option to only use low performance WiFi, meaning that it is throttled and can stutter or even disconnect. Applications that are properly coded for Honeycomb forward should call "WIFI_MODE_FULL_HIGH_PERF" if needed, which will lock in high performance WiFi during sleep. If this isn't occurring, the developer of the app will need to be contacted to resolve the issue.

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Yes, my settings are indeed correct. I also tried the app you suggested, but still no success. After 15-20 minutes of inactivity, wifi always gets turned off. I'm baffled.
Does constant-on Wifi work for anybody on JB? If yes, what rom are you using? Any special tricks/apps?
I have the opposite problem with JB, even my wifi policy is keep on while sleep only when plugged in, but my wifi seems to stay on all the time...
FYI: I am on stock JB flashed with CWM, didn't flash the new radio yet so I am still on I9250XXLA2 from 4.0.4 yakju

I'm using the same ROM, but I did flash a new radio (XXLF1). I will try and flash a different one. Maybe that'll be a clue.
On completely stock 4.1 GSM and my WiFi just stays on while sleep just fine.

Can you let us know your results?
I'm having a similar issue with WiFi not connecting when i get into the office, event though the router is behind me, and visible.
I've turned off the "don't connect to poor quality networks" option.
Does anyone know the exact functionality of this feature? What defines "poor quality"? Does the phone run a test between your phone data speed vs. the WiFi speed?
Initially when I installed JB (v1 for Verizon) I couldn't get WiFi to turn off. It's doing fine now on v3 with all the little fixes patch.

Wifi Calling Help

I started using ILWT's CM7 rom not really knowing what I was getting into. It works great but 80% of my life is outside of cell range and I rely heavily on wifi calling.
The stock G2 wifi calling app no longer works (which apparently everyone knows). I tried using tmobile's crappy Tmobile bobsled app which was a waste of time.
How do I get my wifi calling/texting back? preferably one that uses my phone number like the stock one did. I've searched around seen people refering to links in their signatures that are no longer there but nothing else.
Please help, I'd rather not go back to stock but will if I have to.

CM7.2 has wifi calling as does a some of the sense 2.1 and sense 3.0. There is a version out there for ICS (I use it all the time), but there is no wifi calling for JB.
What I will do is go back and look on my archive of info and see if I can find a wifi calling add-on that works with ILWT

**UPDATE** added the file I have might work.
