Hi all,
So I need to send my phone back for repair meaning I need to return it to stock for the warranty to be valid. It's currently running Cyanogenmod.
I read on here that the best bet was just to install the official 2.3 ROM from HTC's site but because of some USB error I can't get it to work. See here for the error: http://androidforums.com/incredible-tips-tricks/161463-ruu-error-170-171-solution-windows-7-a.html
So now i'm looking for a 2.2 ROM to try. I've found one that's labelled RUU_Brav2_UK_1.20.207.1_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06 .00.02_2_release_124865.exe in the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
I assume that's the right one for a UK Desire? It was bought unlocked so the network is irrelevant to me. So the first question is should I use that one or another (it will have SIMS from various networks in, not just O2)?
The second is, do I simply run the .exe from my computer as per the 2.3 ROM and if so, am I just going to get the same stupid USB error?
Not sure if it's relevant but HTC Sync can never see my phone. I'm guessing because of this USB thing.
Thanks in advance.
Woah there.
That's branded to o2. Having the wrong branded ruu is relevant as it Voids warranty.
Also its android 2.1 (software version starts with a 1) and many 2.1 were amoled only so if yours is slcd, your screen won't work.
For UK unbranded, you want 2.29.405.5 if you want 2.2. That said, you'll maybe still get a usb error.
By the, way, can only run ruu from fastboot screen (back plus power from off) if you're not running HTC Rom. HTC sync only sees HTC roms too, so that also explains that

Thanks for the reply. So just to get this straight (and while I wait for my battery to charge enough to update):
1. download 2.29.405.5
2. Boot phone while holding back button to enable fastboot
3. run .exe
?
Thanks
Yes try that first. If you get the same errors, there is another route to go down...

Assuming your phone has a custom rom counter, flashing it to stock won't reset it. You can always search for a fix, but if one isn't available, you might be screwed.
My post isn't to cause panic, but rather to make you aware. Double check to see if your phone has a rom counter, before sending it out.

Wtf?
Op, ruu wipes and re writes everything on NAND. 100s of people have sent their phone back for warranty. No idea what this guy is talking about.

I was giving him a heads, just in case his device has a rom counter. As I stated in case his device had one, he should double check it. On my phone, only a special hack will reset the rom counter. All the wiping in the world won't reset it. It must be done using a special patch. If his device doesn't have one, then he has nothing to worry about. Relax....

There is no "rom counter" on the desire and even if there was, upgrading the Rom officially on our phones does not void our warranty.
Out of interest, on your device, where does it store the result?

As I previously stated, IF there was a counter. On Samsung phones, the counter is stored in the bootloader.

the htc RUUs overwrite also the bootloader, so the problem doesn't exists for us
the ruu restore and format everything (bootloader, radio, recovery, kernel, system, data, cache)
So finally got around to trying this and it doesn't work. I put my phone into the white screen with the little skateboarding androids on it and run the RUU. It hangs on the 'verifying information on your Android phone' screen then gives me a USB error 170.
Are there some other drivers for my phone I should be trying here. So frustrating.

Hey so wondering what this 'other route to go down' you mentioned is?
I'm getting a USB error at a different stage now but I wonder if it's because I tried to install a different driver for the phone (which I've since deleted). Before it recognised the phone but hung when it tried to start the install.
Now it hangs on the verifying the information on your handset bit.
Is there a way to ensure i've totally removed any non working drivers and installed a good one?
Thanks
Ok so I did do some search and would like to clear up 3 questions please.
1. If I root then the device is still stock (unless I change other things ) but stock is fine. I only want to root it to use this guide:
http://www.guidingtech.com/10821/disable-3-three-dot-menu-htc-one-x-map-to-task-switcher-button/
and get those annoying 3 dots away from my screen
2. If I root will my warranty still be in tact?
3. If I root will I still get updates that I can install from HTC themselfs?
Off my own topic but regarding the upgrade. My phone was imported from Singapore to South Africa because our service products SUCK!!! The update will still come from the South African service provider correct? Don't even know if they will bring one out anyway so...
ps: I have an HTC One X
Thanks guys
Rooting will in theory void the warranty. But you can always unroot to get warranty back. BUT because that you are unlocking your bootloader, you are also voiding your warranty, completely.
There is no way (as of now) to get back to a state, where you have warranty, from an unlocked bootloader.
Only way to root and "keep" warranty, is it either get S-OFF, or find an exploit so the devs can make an easy program like GingerBreak, to root your phone.
Yes, as long as you are on a stock rom, you will get updates, but I don't know if you will loose root that way. I don't think so, but I am not sure.
you only void the warranty if you unlock from htcdev if for example the software you flash on your phone cause an issue with the motherboard for example like overclocking and such. if you have a hardware issue like a broken screen then you are still under warranty. someone correct me if i am wrong..that is kinda the feeling i am getting by reading through the forum
soooo glad I posted it Just registered an account on HTCDev Not gonna do it that way
Ok, can anyone please let me know how to get rid of those 3 dots then I hate being in a app and it reduces the screen for the dots.
You can't without unlocking and rooting your phone
Use this to root, without unlocking your bootloader.
EDIT: Link removed for now.. Not sure if it is working on the Tegra 3 version.
EDIT 2: You guys just have to wait a few hours! Root is on its way!
From the conversation i had with the online tech support at HTC they said that my warranty would be void if i used the unlocking tool at HTCdev.
I even specifically asked if hardware faults would still be covered and he still said no.

Hey guys,
Before I get teared apart limb from limb, I tried searching for rooting on the new software and didn't really come up with any guides.
So, anyway. I just got my upgrade HOX in the mail, and I'm so excited! Of course, I've been on XDA before and rooted and customized and flashed to my heart's content, but I need some help.
Would someone lead me to a guide for rooting HOX on the NEW software? I just got my new kit today, I don't know if it automatically updates or not. I pretty much want to learn how to get to flashing a ROM.
Thanks!

Use it as stock for a few weeks at least to rule out any manufacturer hardware issues.
Update via the OTA check for updates in settings. (2.17 is the latest)
------
The when you want to play with custom, root of etc....
Install Android SDK
1st step is unlocking the bootloader via HTCdev
Then flashing clockworkmod touch recovery
Then flashing a rom of choice, all which have root I think.

I would actually emphasize this. So many people have had hardware issues and it will be a struggle to get the phone repaired after rooting via HTCDEV. Spare yourself trouble and give some time to rule out those problems.
Besides you can use that time to get to know the available roms, issues with them and the rooting/flashing process

Sorry I'm just trying to learn here but here I go. Are their any complications of using HTC to unlock the bootloader meaning can't the boot loader be relocked if he is trying to send it in for repairs?

It can be relocked but unlocking the first time sends HTC a notion that your device has been unlocked. And there are several people that are having a tough time getting their phones repaired even though the issues are hardware.
Depending on the country and law it is possible to force them to repair or replace a faulty device but trust me, that process will be a lot faster and simpler if you haven't tampered with the bootloader.
An irrelevant response but that's why I will always go the nexus route when buying android so I could avoid most if not all these issues.

Help with HTC One X ATT version
Hi Guys,
So I have unlocked my HTC One X ATT version using the HTCDev.com site. Now I want to install clockworkmod so I can proceed with custom ROM installations. But all the links that I find to CWM are dead.
Can someone point me to the live links please? I am itching to get the CM10 rom installed on my HOX.
Please note there are plenty of sites and links for international version of HOX but I want for ATT.
Thanks,

You'd be better off asking in the AT&T One X section of this forum. I didn't think you could even use htcdev with it.

I think they will reflash stock ROM without even looking at what you have installed. I had CM installed when I sent my bricked phone, I thought they won't repair it because warranty was void, but they didn't look, just replaced the chipset and flashed stock ROM.

oh then your warranty void now because you have cm10 installed so they ll know you rooted phone.where i live, htc service center valid warranty wheather my bootloader is locked, unlocked because they said sometimes when we replaced pcb, sometimes some pcb comes from different countries so they are factory locked or unlocked.but your stock rom and recovery is madatory.once i have same problem like you and i tried many times to unroot and getting back my stock rom but accidently i bricked my phone but i have stock rom and recovery so their replaced my pcb.
anyways now you ll probably get new pcb so stock rom is in it,but if you ll get your back with cm10 tell me i ll upload stock rom(flashable zip from cwm recovery).
I knew, that i wouldn't hide it from them but install of stock Rom would be some kind of proof, that this problem isn't software related and make sure they won't dismiss me.

Hello,

My friends note 2 got an OTA update the next morning but his is working fine.

Anyone have any ideas? what has caused this the OTA update? Both me and my brother bought the phones directly through samsung trade but my friend bought his through phones 4 u..

Thanks again
Sorry to say but yes its bricked, and this is happened due to bug in older rom. It's sds (sudden death syndrome)
Another thing your binary counter on download mode is 'no'
And they can't reject earranty claim, you have to convince them. Otherwise you have to pay for it and you will need to change motherboard, which is costly.

Ok thats a shame, pretty poor in my opinion..
Has this affected many others? and was it caused by the OTA update failing or something?
Thanks for the help and i assume that you are certain that i cant fix with software?
Yes there are lots of people affected by this bug just search sds /sudden death in forum. This is purely poor samsung crap and s3 and note2 both devices have same bug (badically faulty emmc chip), you can't fix it with sw once it bricked, latest rom 4.1.2 released in 2013 have fixed for it, but that just can prevent device from getting bricked, who already have bricked have to just replace motherboard.
Sorry and I can feel for it. But you should not put down and let them to know about it to reclaim warranty.
Your downloaf mode information don't suggest you had custom rom, and all the sds victims have same information and got replacement.

really annoying but... im sure in time i will get over it!
thanks for the help and the reply.
just one last question - when the system status says : custom , what exactly does this mean? and what's the difference between that and official. i am asking as i want to make sure im armed with enough information should they decide to get all official with me!
thanks again.
It should official but
I have seen lots cases who never have flashed any custom stuff and having status Modified, so I think they won't Stand up with argument. Yes if your binary download is non zero then it certainly proves you have flashed custom stuff. I have seen more than 20 sds cases on note2 and I really not remember if anyone have status 'official' and I believe this sds issue itself causing status Modified.

So do we have a solution as of date? what can be done or something?
Just upgrade your FW. Fix has been implemented since January, 2013 in Samsung FWs.
I have the same problem

My friends note 2 got an OTA update the next morning but his is working fine.
SInce then my phone wont go past the first boot screen, it is completely stock and has no custom rom or root.
I took it to a samsung repair centre they put it in DL mode and they said i had a custom rom and they cant help..
Iv come home and i have tried to now flash a new firmware, i have then tried to flash CWM via odin but it comes up with a message..
No pit partition

Anyone have any ideas? what has caused this the OTA update? Both me and my brother bought the phones directly through samsung trade but my friend bought his through phones 4 u..
The update my friend got was N7100xxdmb2

I am having the exact problem as the OP. Were you able to fix it? I got my phone from eBay, contacted Samsung Canada, and they said I'd have to go contact Samsung Hong Kong
