Im made sure all my volumes are all the way up.
Im using the stock messaging app and my phone only vibrates. It doesnt make any noise even when I want to sample the notification noises
In the messaging app, have you tried going into settings and selecting the ringtone and changing the setting from only once to every 2 or 10 minutes?

As said above make sure to go into messaging app and choose settings check to make sure the notifications are activated there. Its seperate from the system settings

From the home screen...hit menu>settings>volume
There you can change all the vibration settings
if you are using 3rd party SMS Apps then you have to change the settings in the App itself, for example Go SMS and Handsent and others alike
Did the above and it still doesnt vibrate...
I tried changing the sound then sending myself a text. I did also reboot after changing the default and I still get the ding dong type sound which is not the sound I set for it. The sound it makes is Pollux for incoming SMS messages but I've tried to set it to several others such as even vega or proxima but it always makes the Pollux sound.
I'm going through
- settings
- Sound
- default notification
Is there some place else I should be going to to change the sms incoming text sound?
There are also app specific notification settings.
To change the SMS sound going into the settings of the messaging app.

That is unusual, if your phone is new maybe you should exchange it.
It very well can be a dud of a phone....
Could try a factory reset.

Hi everyone...
Got my s4 yesterday but I noticed the notification sound never plays when I receive an SMS...works for email, gchat but for some reason never for sms. I've tried doing a hard reset, going into sms settings, going into sound settings and nothing...Any ideas?

Yeah went into sms menu and checked it and unchecked it, changed sound still doesnt work
Mine stopped ringing after i installed handcent. Uninstalled it and it started working. Then I installed ninja sms and same problem. I'm guessing you can't have another type of sms app or it will stop the notifications from the stock messaging. Which is pretty weird since I've never had that problem on any of my other phones

I was able to fix it by just doing another battery pull which is weird cause i did it before but oh well as long as its fixed...I'm using the stock msging app
i switched over from Googles phone but not sure why Samsung decided to make the vibrations notification for Gmail this long. usually, it will just be a short vibration for my nexus 4.
I already went into settings and change the vibration type to heartbeat but didn't effect Gmail.
