Hi everyone,
Like many others I had a terrible battery drain in std-by after upgrading to JB. I've already posted some troubleshooting I performed somewhere else, but since I wanted to update this from time to time and to keep everything a bit together, I'm making this topic, don't shoot me :fingers-crossed: It's my log/reference how I'm fixing my battery issue, and some help for other ppl trying to fix their issue to.
Feel free to add your thoughts.
So, some facts of my case:
- Phone is locked, all stock, with JB.
- Std-by drainage after OTA upgrade to JB with everything working on ICS, was +- 20% over night (7h), no data/wifi/BT/sync or anything else.
- Something is waking up my device every half hour to drain battery.
- Disabeling Google Now, NFC, Location stuff, Sync, etc... did not solve the massive drain in my case (it will help ofc, but is not the root-cause).
- Factory reset followed by the installation of all my apps and settings at once did not solve my issue.
- Factory reset with ONLY activating my google account during initial setup (and pulled in my contacts). Nothing else installed or activated/synced for testing purposes. => Solved the std-by drainage on my phone.
- At this point I can tell for sure that in my case, a rogue app (that worked fine on ICS but not on JB) is causing this problem, not JB or my hardware.
**************************************************************
What I did then:
I tried a few battery apps mentioned in other posts to find out where the problem was, but I was not able to find anything usefull.
Tested in the other direction... Did a complete factory reset again, with none of my additional apps installed (only my contacts), no google now, location or syncs.
The result was 14h with only 4% gone! Good result imo.
So I planned installing a few apps at a time/day to see when it starts to drain again, so I can isolate the problematic app.
Yesterday I installed 6 of my most used apps + a few sync profiles last evening, still a very nice std-by drain this night (was still on 100% this morning lol).
For all those with std-by battery issues, if you don't mind a full factory reset and don't need all your 150 apps at once, try it like I did (clean with no apps, sync or data) to see if std-by drain is back to normal (for testing purposes). Then install 5 to 10 apps per day to see if everything remains ok. My device works as it should be now.
I know a lot of ppl prefere not to wipe their phone and want to find the problem via battery monitoring apps, no problem with that, this is just the way I did it, it takes some time but ok, at least the drain is gone now :victory:
I'll update my findings regulary untill I bump to the winning app
Greets
******************************************************************
These are the apps/features i've installed so far and NOT causing the std-by battery drainage (20% or more in 7h):
In std-by at night, the wifi/data/BT and sync are off at my phone ofc.
8h std-by at night, still at 100% in the morning
aCalendar
Apex Launcher Pro
ES FileExplorer
Fancy Widgets
Power Toggles
Facebook synced
Google Drive
Twitter Synced
Smooth calendar widget
***
9h std-by at night 1% drop
Green power
Google Location Service (System Setting)
Dropbox + auto photo upload
SwiftKey 3 full + personalize
Swiftkey flow beta
HLN
XDA Developers Premium
***
12h std-by at night (including 3h with wifi/data and sync) = 3% down
11 new apps installed yesterday.
***
More apps installed, drain is still ok.
Can you let us know the first 6 apps.
Thanks

Sorry i'm not good in analyzing battery app graphics... That's why I'm working the other way around as you can see.
Is your screen showing your device was on std-by for 80 hours or?

After disabeling the location report setting in Google maps the battery drain was gone on my hox. Go to Google maps/settings/location and then remove the check mark at something called like report location (I have a german phone so I dont know the exact expression). Once you have done that the battery consumption is less then on ics. At least in my case.
Hope this helps!

Yeah tried that to before, but didn't fix the 20% overnight drain here. Ofcourse it will help with general battery usage.

it will be interesting to know what the rough app was
if this was me i would try reading through the last dozen or so comments on playstore about my installed apps, maybe other people are having the same prob ..
My battery seems to have settled went to bed with 43 percent woke up 7 hours later with the same
Have managed 29 hours battery and 4 hours screen time. I've done over 4 hours screen time before but only on like a 6 hour total use. But with over 29 hours since last charge its actually become a usable phone

Hehe yeah thats an option to, but when you have over 150 apps it can be a hassle to check that, with not even a guarantee that you find any useful comments ofcourse
Anyway, this morning my std-by drain was still TOP after the batch I installed yesterday

How do you check screen time on JB? Seems to be gone in the 'battery' option in settings
do you keep data connection off?
Use gsam to show screen time.
Power save mode turns data off with screen off.

Yes, when my phone is in std-by at night, wifi, data and sync is off.
Another batch of 11 apps installed yesterday.
10pm to 10am = 3% std-by drain.
From those 12 hours there are also 3 hours included which my wifi/data and sync was on with mails coming in.
So std-by battery drain is still very good here! :highfive: Hope the rogue app is in one of my 50 games, no so difficult to eliminate one of those

have u got spare parts? open it up and look at battery history and the running vs screen on time.
they should be the same but i can almost guarantee that your phone is still running whilst the screen is off. you need to find out the app which is keeping a wakelock on ur device and delete/change its settings

Sorry for the noobish question, but can I compare the two. I went to spare parts and could not see where to compare screen on time vs running.
I recently tried to calibrate y battery, but sinse my screen does not shut off on its own as before. I've aleady checked the screen timers and all is as it was before.
Right now I am @ 4.5 hrs since I unplugged and I am sitting @ 76%, with little use...kinda sucks!!!!

What kinds of widgets do you have running in the background and how often are they pulling data?
Also, how many days have you been on CM 6.1? I upgraded from RC3 and my battery life is much improved. The first two days it was eating a lot as it 'calibrated' itself but now I can easily make it through a full days use with about 40% to spare.
I adjusted my background widgets and how often they pulled data and this really helped my battery life. Also, a poor signal can have VERY ADVERSE affects on battery life. For example, I work in a prison where cell phone reception is awful. If I am at work for 3 hours and leave the phone in 3G mode, I can easily go through 30% battery while the phone tries to find a signal...
Any idea how long will it take the batt tocalibrate???? I did the recalibration process on thurday night, and my battery sucks now.
I'm sitting on 49% only 4 hours unplugged. Before I was getting somewhere around 55-60% at this time interval...
Any ideas?

Alright boys try this. I got over 2 days worth of lifetime with this set up.
-Download SetCPU
Set your profile to 245/245 screen off with priority at 100%.
-Turn brightness to 0%
-Turn GPS off (Go to Settings->Location and Security-> turn off all that GPS crap
-Leave 3G off until you actually need it, then turn it back off after you're done with it
-Leave bluetooth off
-Don't have garbage widgets lying all over the place on 7 homescreens. I only have like 5 widgets spread out on 2 homescreens.
Are you guys running CM 6.1? Cause I am.
Did you guys overclock?
Thank me if it worked out for you =P

Convolution Thanks for the reply, but im more interested in getting a few more hours but with certain level of freedom. I am not all that interested in switching things on and off every time I need them, but I understand what you mean.
I'm looking to get 16 hours of moderate use...that should be plenty. I currently turn off wi-fi and gps since I seldom use gs, and wifi is governed by a profile manager, and it's on only at night.
but setting connection down to 2G, and killing all screen brightness renders the device (IMHO) useless. Also, SetCPU @245 100%, would really hinder the device.
I am running CM6.1 Stable and I am running OC'd @ 1497, but on "On Demand" profile, so to use only as needed.
I still have to try Pershoot's kernel, I think I will flash it tonight to see what happens.
I am also experiencing some oddity with my screen time-out feature...it's not working.....my screen refuses to turn off by itself, I have to lock the device physically for it to take effect....not sure what changed...but the regular parameters are set properly.
I'm getting 2-3 days with the stock WWE ROM that came with the phone. Brightness is set to Auto, but I keep GPS, BT, WiFi and mobile data connection off until I need them. Other than that, I talk about 20-40 mins/day, send out a few texts, listen to the radio, read my feeds and e-mail - pretty much everything the phone was made for.
IMHO, the "calibration" is bullcrap, it's just an impression that it lasts longer afterwards.

Basically the same setup I have in terms of connectivity except for data.....does it really have that much impact on battery life?
What would I missing if I decide to turn data off?
Thanks!
Huge impact. Try it out for a day or two. Or just install Juice Defender, which disables it while the screen is off, turning it on at set intervals (like for 1 min every half hour) to let it sync.
Thanks Keinengel....I'll look up Juice Defender...sounds like the right thing!
i get atleast a day and a half out of my phone and i had it for about a week now. best battery ive had for a while now.

I'm installing this as a last resort before sending my phone back. After hard reset and everything, battery is still a major drain.
For those that are using it, how well does it work? Which settings are you using?
I've only the free version for now but would consider upgrading if it does help?
Also, how do you prevent meebo from disconnecting when the screen turns off? Is that an option on the free version?

About Juice Defender, for me it worked with ~1.6x batterylife.
About Meebo: get Trillian, they made it for free this week. You stay connected even if your phone is off(for max of 1 day, changeable in settings) and you'll receive al the messages which came while your online the enxt time you login again. You can manage all your accounts on the PC with the regular Trillian program and then login on your phone with your Trillian account and all the accounts will be there. It is a real nice app with very low battery consumption.
The free version is very limited. I use the ultimate version and I'm rather happy with it. I don't want to schedule traffic when my phone is idle, but that would be a massive battery saver.
Yes, you can set different settings for each app in the paid versions. You can set a trigger that makes sure your internet is always on when meego is running, even when your screen is off.
But overall, I have no problem to use my phone for more than 12 hours on battery with moderate usage. Maybe you should send your device back anyway.
I had terrible battery drain as well but ive managed to resolve this. have you tried:
1. Deleting all social hub accounts?
2. Deleting your mail account if you use the stock mail app?
3. Updated to latest official firmware?
I was experiencing 10% idle drain per hour. Now i'm at 1-2%. Battery life is a huge improvement compared to my old desire. Dont guve up on this phone.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
In my experience standard battery drain per hour should be
1~2% screen off / data off
3~5% screen off / data on
12~15% screen on / data off
18~20% screen on / data on
WiFi uses less battery than 3g but as you can see display is main problem...

So after using Juice defender ultimate for a couple weeks now, with the customizable apps configuration, I see no improvement in battery life.

I have it setup to turn the data, and wifi off while the screen is off.
Night mode is enabled, from 11:30, to 7:00am
I also have it only allow wifi via location, work or home.
It eats 1-2% while in standby per hour.
and about 3-4% overnight.
i tried juice defender ultimate and it made no difference. I deleted it just because its another app working in the background...

Mine does that (1-2% per hour at idle) without Juicedefender and push email/facebook active. The problem with JD is also that when set to switch off Wifi and data in the background when the phone is idle, it doesn't always switch them back on after the phone awakens, resulting in many pain in the ass moments.
I bought it 6 months ago and never use it any more.

Pretty standard really wifi and mobile data enabled (ultimate version), autosync on ping, 15 minute scheduled check for 30s. I don't have it turn off data at night because the phone is usually plugged in and have data enabled when the screen is on. It also manages the wifi locations so usually it only connects to wifi.

Is this your first flash? Ive have flashed plenty of times, battery life, no matter what ROM, cannot be judged the first, second or third day of usage. Give it five days, and report back. When I used darkside, I was getting 30 hours, with moderate use. Give it time, use your battery till it dies, and charge it fully while off. You will see a difference.
On my fourth day, but I just had to reinstall the ROM..
Now I'm using my carriers ROM, done by Derek Jay.
Hopefully it had something to do with it, not sure.
But I have read that ics and the t989 were having problems.

Koooba, i just posted in another thread about battery issues, check it out here. I been running Derek's Roms since Digital Warfare and never any really issues with his Rom. i would suggest to calibrate the battery, turn off sync on all apps (Facebook is one of the worst) and keep brightness down to a 20% or whatever is comfortable for you. No joke, i get 17 hrs avg on his roms. People been known to get 24hrs+ on his roms and those are the TMo version...Telus is suppose to have be even better.

one of the ways these guys are getting such good battery life is by turning off data. that's a huge one.
btw - i'm on a D as well, and I get consistently just under 3 hours screen on time, and i charge every night. usually end with about 15% left.
it could be due to the horrible signal in some of my university buildings... or the fact that i just leave wifi on all day. but I haven't really been able to crack that barrier.
it will always take about a week for your kernel and phone to settle down.

That means an app you install is eating the battery

Well a fresh charge overnight and I'm at 83% for 3 hours 14 minutes usage.
Very light usage, 1 call that lasted 30 seconds.
Bluetooth off
GPS off
Sync off
Wifi on-used when needed
Screen 60%
Cell 9%
How bad is this?
Still under warranty, very seriously considering sending it in.
Unless its because of ICS?

Most battery drains are from apps constantly running in the background. Use better battery stats and gsam battery monitor and I guarantee after a day of usage, you will track down what is killing it. Widgets, auto syncing of apps and Google are the biggest culprits of battery drain.

Well, after installing GSAM and checking off the option to prolong battery life in the default settings, the battery is a bit better, but not great.
When you turn off data, do you guys turn off ALL data?
Because I have every possible option off...
syncing, GPS, bluetooth, the only data I have on is the basic network data I would think I need to receive text msgs.

Yeah I got all that off when I don't use it. If I get no signal, I put it on airplane mode. I found even if you turn off data and you are in a building with poor signal or none it kills it, even with data off. Do you use any third party apps for text, phone or anything. What launcher do you use? Facebook on manual sync, emails too?
What does app sucker say is draining?

That's crazy then, because I'm LUCKY if I can squeeze out 5-6 hours and I turn off EVERYTHING.
I even frosted GTalk through Titanium, I don't have use Facebook, so I disable that app altogether.
Something definitely has to be wrong with my phone then.
I got the battery replaced for a new one, so dunno what's going on.
Just checked out your post, not sure what badass to governor setting is...?
I just installed the Venom Kernel over the Derek's Evo updated ROM.
All syncing is off, GPS is off as well.
Has to be an issue with my phone and ICS, because it originally came with Gingerbread.
I've been trying to figure out why my battery has been so bad over the last few days and why Maps is using almost half the battery on my phone. I've checked to make sure nothing on the phone is using location services, cleared data, and turned off every location option in setting, yet Maps still eats battery like mad.
As a last resort I uninstalled the updated Maps app and am now using the version that came with JB. It's too early to be sure, but it seems like maybe battery usage is calming down. The phone is definately running a bit cooler now.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
Do you have Google locations checked ? That is normally also a big battery drainer

No, all location items were unchecked, Google Now was turned off, there was really no reason for it to be such a big drain.
BTW, after 2 hours I now have 97% battery left and maps is only about 6% of total usage. I'm thinking this made a big difference.
Thank you! I thought I'd gone crazy. After only doing a few app updates and the update to JB, I have also noticed a major drain on my battery compared to the entire time I've had my S3.
Any update on your test with rolling back to the older maps version? I'm a new convert to Android (loving it) and don't know how to do that even if it would help
If that was causing the problem, I may be in the same boat as you and I'll look into going back to the old version for now. I initially thought it was just the JB update as a whole..who knows

There are a whole slew of things that will kill battery on JB. Any app that syncs data in the background needs to have background syncing turned off. That includes Google Now and Facebook. Maps needs to have Location sharing and Location reporting turned off. I had done all that and was still having a huge drain on the battery. Uninstalling the Maps update is easy, didn't lose anything useful, and seems to have reduced battery consumption quite a bit. So, either my case is a fluke or there is some sort of bug in the Oct 29th update to Maps. I'd like to here if anyone else has had the same results I have.
I had done the same things as the OP and still had noticeable battery drainage. This morning I decided to freeze Maps with TiBu and midway through the day I now have 74% battery where yesterday I was at 40-50% midway through the day.

I too have been having much worse battery life with JB compared to ICS and all entirely due to the Maps app (losing ~9% overnight when just sleeping!). It is always at the top of my usage even when never using it. Never had a problem with it on ICS. Thought it may be related to Google Now but maybe it is indeed the latest version causing issues all by itself.
I've been afraid to freeze maps. Not only do I use it regularly, but it seems that lots of other apps rely on it (part of why it's such a battery killer).
Hi
I have received the Find 7a . Tho only issue I have with that is the huge battery drain when off ( even with data and wifi off )
Therefore I want to create a thread where we can share the solutions for this battery drain issue.
PS: I am running ColorOS 2.0 beta
cheers

I dont understand why people keep complaining about the battery. I use my 7a a lot and the battery lasts me just fine and I have Wi-Fi and GPS always on.

It's a known issue, I'm actually in a pilot group with a product manager and developer using a new firmware based on 1.2 that seems to help.
In the meantime, change the lockscreen from Colorlock as that has been known to hold a wakelock and disable Google's location services.
After I did that on 1.2 or 2.0 beta my drain shot down to .5%/hr.
I too am part of said pilot group that Sean mentioned and can confirm that a more battery saving firmware is in the works.
Give oppo some time to work the issue out, it's starting to look better.

yep, that do the trick. Also I rooted, and froze some crappy apps like Oppo Launcher ..etc. Fully charged before bed time, and I woke up still 100%
thank you !

Did you froze those apps using Titanium Backup? Or how did you do it?
Thanks!

Freezing applications/disabling them is basically the same as removing them, except that they still take up space on the system. You can freeze applications using Titanium Backup as you said and if you have root of course. If you want to completely remove the applications you should get a file explorer that can request root permissions, then look for the applications you want to remove, these can usually be found in "/system/app/" or "/system/priv-app/". You can also remove them using adb, this is a little more complicated though, if you want to do it this way I'd recommend you to Google it. Be careful when removing files from the system though, as you may run into some weird situations, you can always make a backup of course. (when restoring back-upped files, remember to set the correct permissions)
enabling google location services do not have impact on standby battery drain, seems changing the lock screen and freezing default launcher (I use Nova) helped
cheers

I am not seeing any battery drain here. I am still running v1.2.0i and not rooted. I have the password lockscreen and overnight I turn off WiFi and Data and I lose 3% in 8hrs. Pretty good I would say.

I'm on 2.0 beta, changing that to Revolving lock and disabling Google's location services (gimps the phone a bit sure but easy to enable and gps is still fine) and my drain is down to .6%/hr. Not too shabby, and will be testing tonight with location back on.
have been using the find 7a for nearly a week now. all i can say is...be patient, people! the first 2 days i had it, the battery drain is unbearable(8~12hr use and it's gone), but after 3~4 full cycle charged (start charging when below 10% then fully charged using 'battery doctor'), from the 4th day, the battery is amazing, easily get past 24 hours of use with data and wifi always on, screen on time 3 hours+ no problem. my current used time: 34 hr 26 m, with screen on 2 hr 7m, battery still 33%. Google location service is on all the time, Google now is off all the time. GPS off most of the time. running color OS 2.0 beta.
so be patient and charge your battery for few full cycles.
i hope this may help you guys.
Even Oppo has publicly stated the massive battery drain is a known issue affecting all Find 7a phones sold to date so I'm thinking denying there is an issue is a bit silly at this point. Also 2 hours screen time with 33% remaining is a terrible performance that sits at approximately half of what this phones current competition is offering.
Having has this from day one I would also point out that one of the problems associated with this is the inconsistency. I normally will see around 15 percent drain overnight but occasionally its as little as 5 or as high as 70. The problematic part comes in when you figure I've spent most nights testing some new scheme to see if I've made any improvements to the standy life.
Nor do I think its a good idea to accept excuses. On my N5 I never turned anything off, bluetooth, wifi, google now, location, etc. All on all the time and never had a problem getting 4 hours of screen time and never used more than 5% over night. That would of course make it nothing special since I haven't owned a phone since back somewhere around the sgs2 that couldn't do the same thing and there have been lots of phones between here and there. You shouldn't have to turn the phones features off to get the phone to work, being forced to means you are getting a sub industry standard experience. Calling it anything else is a lie.
