[Q]App Replacement - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've looked up how to replace system apps and read multiple guides, but I haven't found what I'm looking for specifically. I want to remove the stock Google apps and replace them with alternatives. For example, I want quickpic instead of the gallery.
I've rooted my phone making it writable. I've flashed my phone enough times to know I need to read. I'm currently running Reloaded .500 RLS.
I've moved the quickpic apk to /system/app and changed the permissions and then I moved the gallery to /data/app and uninstalled it, but when I reboot the app is installed but force closes upon opening. What should I do? Also, should I change the name of the apk to the system app for association purposes because I want the replacement apps to be associated with the functions off the Google apps. Like when in messages when I click on "attach" I want to be able to click "picture from camera" which I can't right now even though I renamed the replacement app Camera.apk. Definitely need some help. Tia!

Get Titanium Backup from the market, uninstall the system apps and install your apps choosing "integrate into rom" or something similar

Delete system apps?

I'm on mikifroyo and wanted to get rid of some apps like Facebook news Twitter all that. I know its probably easy but can someone help? Thanks

Just lookup "Root Uninstaller" in the Market. It let me finally get rid of the NASCAR app.
Isn't it just a matter of removing the apk from the /system/app folder? I'm sure there's more to it, so hopefully someone more in the know can chime in.
My recommendation- Use Titanium Backup to do it. It's easy as can be and you can also back up the app before deleting it just in case you want it back.
If you have root explorer you can go to /system/app and set it to RW as opposed to RO and delete the apks of what you don't want....

Currently running urban regeneration and quick pic. Us it possible to eery remove gallery completely? If so, is that accomplished by using a file explorer?

I removed mine completely, and have for the past few roms I flashed. I prefer to use AntTek App Manager Root for my freezing and removing needs...

I guess this question is sort of related to this so I'll ask it here. In Gallery is there any way that anyone knows of to NOT display every single folder that has an image in it? It's a little annoying going to the gallery and having folders for music album folders, certain apps, themes etc. I just want to see what in my DCIM folder and sub folders

Such an option exists within quick pic, I never figured out how to do it in gallery, if it's possible

In the folder you wish to hide, create a .nomedia file in it. That will hide the folder from appearing in gallery.
So I have root explorer, but where do I go to to delete Gallery?

I do that and it tells me,
"Gallery3D.apk cannot be deleted because the files system is read only."
I am running Random Rom Osprey, with EG22.

Jelly Bean Gallery not showing sdcard photos

I had flashed the AOKP build 1 ROM last week. Among other issues, the Gallery app was not showing any images from the sdcard. I then did a nandroid restore back to Bugless Beast. But the Gallery app is still not showing sdcard photos. If I add any new photo, that is showing up in Gallery after sometime; but not existing photos.
How do I solve this? Is there any way to force the Gallery app to scan sdcard for media and pick up the images?
note -
1) Gallery app worked fine before flashing AOKP
2) I don't have .nomedia in my pictures folder and they show up fine in quickpic
3) I still need Gallery to work, as apparently the app 'bump' depends on it. Bump doesn't detect pictures, if Gallery doesn't.
Any suggestions?
I'd bet if you look at the folder or root in astro or root explorer you'll see a file named ".nomedia" somewhere. It might take a little while until the scan occurs for the pictures to show up.

Apparently it has something to do with ROM manager. If you have it installed, uninstall it and redownload from the CWM website and install it again. Reboot and it should be fine. It worked for me when I had this problem.

Nope, no .nomedia files involved. Else they wouldn't have showed up in quickpic either. I anyway checked with root browser too, with 'show hidden file' checked. No .nomedia file.

I uninstalled the ROM manager and rebooted. No effect. I then cleared cache and data of Gallery and Media Storage and rebooted. Let Gallery run its scan for sometime. Now it is showing a few picture folders of the sdcard. And a lot of 'place holder' dark grey tiles with no images in them. Guess it is still scanning. But it's been almost an hour now. Still scanning...!!!??
Will update later if everything shows up.

1. Disable the Media Scanner
2. Use FX Explorer to go to the Folder and select rescan folder.

When you say clockworkmod, are you referring to the recovery or the apk?
Thanks
Update -
After clearing cache/data of gallery and media storage and rebooting, Gallery ran its scan for some time and now it is showing all images. So, that's the solution. :good:

thxx for the tip, but i can t shift it, buttun is unactive :/
this is weird, it must surely be somewhere
You can back up it
You can use Android assistant to back up it and have it on your memory card as it appears doesn't support moving to sd
this is what i would liek to understand:
when you buy an app, before it get installed, it has to be downloaded, and then stored. I though it was done in /data/app but it seems that not all app are stored there by default obviously.
where else can it be?
uninstallable system apps located at system/app

Not sure why you'd want to find them but if you're trying to get it for free (or something like that), you're in the wrong place.
If that's not the case, mind clarifying why you're looking for them?

I paid for root explorer so that I can explore the files and folders on my phone. I noticed that half of the apps I have installed are not in the same location as I usually would see them....not sure what you mean by get them for free when they are paid apps already on my phone. Do I need to forward you google receipts...not everyone is trying to get everything for free. This is not my first post and if you were to check my previous posts you would see that I'm always taking time to help others in the pasts. Thanks anyways.
Btw Im looking for them because I like to theme some of my apps. You'll see I made a tutorial over a year ago on how to use 7zip to theme your phone or apps.

Slow down for a sec... I'm sorry you took this in the wrong way. There just isn't any reason to be looking for a app with root explorer unless you wanna extract it (I won't explain the process of stealing paid apps), which is why I was asking your reasons for it.
Either way, as you probably noticed, not all apps install in the same folders (often games). Some of them are installed under system/app, others in data/data and of course, data/app (there might be other folders).
You could also use TiBu to backup the apk, pull it from your phone (in the TiBu folder) and do your magic from there.
P.S.: Reading with a smile helps to avoid confusion and taking things the wrong way
I too pull the apps and theme them for myself. For Root Explorer and probably other paid apps I too am not sure where they are now. Root Explorer was always under data/apps but after its update I have not found it. It has a built in theme kind of where you can choose some of the images seen (text file, picture file, etc.) but I was just wanting to theme them color wise but I haven't found it yet. I will let you know if I find it, please do the same. I will do a complete search of all files to see if I can locate where it is hidden.
I also know some of the apps stuff is located in data/data but when you find speed software there it doesn't have the files I am looking for.
EDIT: I FOUND IT. It is called pkg.apk or red.zip and is located in mnt/asec/com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer-1/pkg.apk
