[INFO][RESEARCH] JB Flash Counter, Triangle Away

Ok, I kinda knew it was because I had rooted the phone. I guess my question was, what does it mean "big picture" wise.

Its nothing of consequence unless you plan on cashing in on your warranty . If you need to get a replacement , all you need to do is use triangle away to set flash counter to 0 and then Odin to stock. That will make your phone look brand new firmware wise...

Ya man,i used it the other day. You can only run it with ICS kernels a or you will likely brick.I'm on Calkins FD02Ics2V1.4. Worked great. A little nerve racking but no more bindery count!
It only works with ICS and make sure u follow all directions, especially making sure the info matches, binary count needs to be exact, model# should match unless u have the wrong bootloader and make sure if the triangle is or isn't visible that matches as well, otherwise there's a chance of bricking if the info isn't matched up

I haven't tried triangle away yet, my flash counter is now at 37 but I don't have the yellow triangle so it doesnt bother me at all. Alot of ppl have used it numerous times tho and I haven't seen anyone brick from it as of yet, atleast not on our device. I did see 1 person who bricked on another version of the sgs2 but their info in the app didn't match up the product ID meaning they most likely had the wrong bootloader installed to begin with

Theoretically it will work with any ICS rom/kernel combo for the time being, eventually Samsung may patch the exploit that allows it to work or they may not. Apparently they will have to actively hide the partitions to disable the apps functionality so they may or may not go that far to patch it.

I used it with CM9 Alpha 3 yesterday. Everything went through without a hitch.. YMMV though... It has a warning before using.. That's what made me a bit weary.

Counter?

Well, I recently got the S3 is rooted running Xquizit v35. But my main question is what exactly is the counter?
is there any bad things if it gets too high? does it need to be reset?
Oh, and based on your opinion and experience what is the best ROM for us T-Mo S3 users out there?
The counter is for samsung to tell if you have ever modified your device. They do this for warranty purpose, if it is tripped then they will charge you. However Chainfire has an app out called Triangle away that will put your counter to zero.
There is no such as the BEST ROM...I recommend cm10 ...its a great noob ROM...its stable enough for daily use.
http://get.cm/?device=d2tmo
You can download it there...make sure you get the latest gapps because the ROM doesn't have them reinstalled

And I would disagree it a very un-noob rom, it has words they'd have to search "nightly" "milestone" "gapps" better option, stock ROM debloated, or stock ROM with root permission and learn what you can do from there.

If you've flashed you have to send Samsung $15 if you want to keep your warranty.
Well, I'm not a noob at android I know most about it. I'm just new to Samsung. I haven't tried CM10 since I'm mainly about battery life w/ a good performance. How's the battery life on CM10? And I guess I'll try to reset my counter with that app. Thanks guys!

FWIW my counter is at 15 right now. (See how worried I am about it)
Just download Triangle Away and run it when you want. After each flash, once a week, never. It all depends on how careless/ful you are when flashing and if you bork something so bad, it has to be returned for warranty.
Also best ROM threads are frowned upon bc they always turn into pissing contests.

Ok, so can't ask "best ROM", but, is everything working and stable in any particular version of CM10?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I see people talking about the warranty aspect of it, but I found out the hard way that having the counter not zeroed out affects the way some T-Mo and Samsung services work. Examples:
1) I was excited the AllShare Cast dongle for $50, got it all hooked up, then had this problem where every time the phone tried to hook up to the hub, it would just disconnect after a few seconds. After doing some reading, it was discovered that if your flash count reset back to zero (and binary showing as "official"), then the hub worked just fine. So I did the Triangle Away business, and bam. Worked like a charm.
2) There was a promotion a little while back where T-Mobile customers could view or download The Avengers movie from one of the bloatware apps I removed long ago. I don't remember all the details, but the download only worked once the counter and then the TV app data were both reset.
So there are real world reasons to go ahead and reset the flash counter back to zero. It just took me a little bit of time to figure this out myself. And now I'm passing the savings on to youuuuu!
Thanks for that! That's a heads up

[Q] URGENT: Revert to stock Kernel/ROM and Remove Yellow Triangle

Firstly thank you in advance to anyone who takes time out to help me fix this problem.
I have searched high and low for an answer both here and abroad but I have not been able to find anything that addresses non-stock recovery and yellow triangles.
I have an Epic 4G Touch running CM9 with CWM. A couple of days ago I noticed that my charge port was giving me issues and I had to place the connector in just the right way to get it to charge. Now it has become a large issue where it will barely charge.
TL;DR: I have insurance and need to figure out how to get back to stock everything, remove the yellow triangle (without USB jig) and make it look like the phone has had nothing but stock.
Thank you again!
That's cheating.

Use your current recovery to flash the FL24 modem and then use Mobile Odin to flash FL24.

Depending on which modem they are running...
I'd suggest;
Use triangle away, flash an older official stock tar with mobile odin, (wont matter with current modem since they can be mixed since they're running cm9) then let the ota take it to official latest.
But I'm betting op has done something by now.

It does really work. But there are chances for it to brick if you lose power to the phone. Battery dies, if falls and battery falls out, power button issues. Other than that, it won't brick you. They also put that warning on there so someone can't blame the dev if they did something to f**k their phone up. Its a universal disclaimer thar tells people to be careful.

You're mistaken, to a point.
Flashing a stock will remove the triangle but not reset the binary counter.

Problem after update

After I updated my phone to 4.4.2 I lose service and have to restart my phone multiple times a day to get service back. I called T-Mobile and after resetting the phone they said they would replace it. Then I called Samsung and they said to bring it to best buy to have it reflashed. I can go there but I could also flash it via Odin at home. Now my question is, if I flash the stock rom via Odin will it trip the Knox counter? I read that it won't and I read that it can. I just want to make sure it won't before I flash it incase I have to have it repaired or replaced.

Well I flashed the stock rom from sammobile yesterday morning and so far so good. I haven't had a problem since. Tmobile said there is no way I could flash the firmware again even though I knew I could through odin, just wasn't sure if I used odin if it would trip the Knox counter. I didn't want to replace my phone that is in mint condition through tmobile and get who knows what in return so I called Samsung and they said to go to best buy to have it reflashed. I saved myself a trip by doing it myself. thank you elesbb for your help.

Yeah, i hate getting replacements from them. I no longer have insurance as any repairs (aside from shattered screen, this denotes an upgrade ) i will just do myself. I have gotten replacements for my S3 through them and they ALL were horrible. I ended up having to take apart both phones when they sent me the new one and made a good working one out of it and reassembled the bad pieces into a bad phone and sent that one back. Ha. It was pathetic. lol.

Ever since I got the OTA Kit Kat my phone is in nightmare mode. Wifi wont stay on or ever even come on. Wake screen freezes and numerous other issues. [Q] Returned from factory with KNOX - what do I do?

Hi everyone, I just had my phone repaired at the factory, sent in with a stock T-Mobile 4.2.2 ROM, but came back with KNOX.
I HAVE NOT booted the phone up -- I put it into download mode only to see the KNOX flags. But it's probably been booted before for testing at the factory.
Is there anything I should/can do before I turn it on normally (to help with ridding myself of KNOX problems)?
Eventually, I want to root it and/or install a custom ROM.

You can go ahead and boot up. There's nothing you can do right now at this moment that will save you versus later in time.
If they wiped your data and you're starting fresh, you may want to look into it soon as so you don't gain personal data which then you'll need to back up (extra step).
As for rooting/custom roms I cannot speak for the S4 but I can look into it if requested. But you could (I mean hopefully..) search the forums just as well as I can, so..
Hope this helps,

Is KNOX resettable to zero in that way or is it irreversible?

It is programmatically permanent. Meaning that there isn't a method of resetting it via software but only by hardware (board replacement etc). There will soon be a Riffbox solution where you can reflash the bootloader by a serial port, you will undoubtedly have to solder the tiny wires to the microscopic solder points on the board. (Yikes) We hope to god that someone finds a knox exploit soon.

WOW! Hard to believe. So no one with a newer S4 or S5 can root without voiding warranty? No going back? That's terrible.
I wonder if this means less people are rooting these days. Darn, I want to get rid of bloat, but warranty is important to me.
I assumed with the advent of the S5, someone had figured it out. Here's to hoping someone does.

Does Knox increase EVERY time you load a new ROM, or a new recovery, or re-root?
That is, once it goes to 0x1 does it stay there, or if you are playing around a lot, does it quickly go 0x2, 0x3, and up and up and up?

It stays at 0x1. Nothing happens to your phone in general. It still operates the same.

No. The knox counter does not go up. Its either tripped or it isnt.
The flash counter goes up everytime you flash something in odin, but not when you flash stuff in recovery.
Flash counter and knox are 2 different things

Well, if you've been flashing ROMs for a while without bricking or messing up your phone, then tripping KNOX shouldn't be an issue. All KNOX is is an alarm for Samsung to know if you've done anything to void your device. So if you ever do brick your phone or anything, even if it's hardware issue on their end, they can then say you're the blame just because they know you tampered with it. Even if it's their own fault. But if you know what you're doing, then it really doesn't matter. And they still won't really know until you try and turn it in one day and they look to see if the trip counter is 0x1 or 2 or 3. If it's 0x0 then it's good to them.

That is just not correct. Knox is absolutely not just a way for Samsung to see if you have messed with the phone.
Its a security feature to allow the device to qualify as a secure system for business use. Some enterprise software won't work if the knox flag is tripped. That allows it to be more secure as you can't simply hide root so a root checking app will still function.
This prevents data theft for businesses. That is what knox is there for. It was not put in as a warranty check.
