Just like desktop hardware, voltage requirements and temperatures at different frequencies will vary device to device. No standard set of undervolting settings will work for every device.
What build would you recommend to achieve optimal battery life and low CPU temps? ROM / kernels / frequencies etc?

Cpu temps frequencies and voltage vary from device to device. There is no optimal build.
So do you have some before and after temps and battery stats so people can at least gauge if this is worth it?
Maybe I'm not wording it right. I understand each device may vary. I'm asking for the results of others who have undervolted their galaxay nexus. The Best results they received and what build it was? Even if it may change from device to device there is still a foundation to undervolting.

Honestly you should just try it and find out yourself. Your phone might not even be able to handle UV. I realize you just joined XDA today but a certain level of self-reliance is to be expected.

Well if you read my original post it shows the values at which my Gnex is both underclocked & undervolted , it can handle it. Self- reliance ? I'm not asking for your help or how to UV. Read the post it clearly asks what ones results were, per their specific build. values to a point can be mimicked. Many people have different results. Different builds yield different results.No disrespect intended .

Self-reliance was probably poor word choice on my part. What I'm saying is that you can't use the experiences of others for things like this. It requires some experimentation on your part to find out what exactly works best for you. As long as you don't set a new UV setting at boot before you're sure of it's stability there's not really anything that can go wrong.
I understand where you are coming from. I have tried multiple stats ,builds etc. I may be new to the forums but not Linux os . The point of these forums is to get a world wide knowledge perspective. My intentions are to see the best results others have attained with an underclock/ undervolt build. Stats of interest. ROM , kernels , GPU , CPU , UV values and CPU temps .

Trial and error is the only sure method to find your optimized minimum stable voltages. The differences in hardware have no correlation to build or manufacture date or anything.
Roms,kernels,CPU values , GPU values, all effect undervolting .

again, not to sound repetitive, but when it comes to voltages and undervolting, every device is different. some device could undervolt 50mV less then the default, some 100-200mV or more, and some cant undervolt at all. undervolting would be per device, there wont be an optimal number for all.
Here is my settings, use it almost two month and no SOD and freeze, pretty stable for me.
Franco r348 192-1228, Xylon v12
Advice: Do some research and try it in your phone, if it stable try lowering it 20-25mV if it freeze reset to your stable voltage. You need sometimes like half until 1 hour to do a research and have a list of your minimum stable voltage. But stable in one kernel doesnt mean it stable in another, cause i cant apply my settings in zen and AK kernel, i have to increase it like 5-10mV. Enjoy playing with voltages

what does the op want, a public UV/OC settings database, by roms, kernels, devices, hell, hardware revisions? The point being?
OP is asking about roms, kernels.... Why? Almost every kernel in here uses the same UV/OC implementation. While some can be different, a different rom or a different kernel won't change how much your device can handle, being it UV or OC. It's running on the SAME hardware!
Talking about comparing with other devices...like you say "ROM , kernels , GPU , CPU , UV values and CPU temps"... these all vary with DEVICE/USER/USAGE.
There's too much data and environment variables to measure UC/OC/UV savings, on a big scale, for something that's so dependent or influenced by something so small.

Does anybody know if having the normal settings are better or under clocking (say 1Ghz) for battery for this particular phone?
I also know that a higher speed can perform the calculations faster and thus save power. But, I'm just curious if there is a sweet spot.

The best way to really tell woukd be to step the max freq. down by one or two and run it for a day or two. If it runs stable and you don't notice any issues you'll prob be good to go. My guess would be running between 1.2-1.3ghz would be a good spot.
I'm honestly not sure you'd see much difference in battery though since its probably running much slower than that most of the time its not sleeping anyway.
Plus I think I remember seeing somewhere that the power used to run at 1.5 is the same it uses to run at 1.3.
If your going to see improvement in battery its more likely you'll get that from voltage adjustments and your governor choice. You'd probably be best served by reading through the kernel thread to see what others have tried and reported.

It's more based on how the rom works, and the kernel yes helps with CPU and GPU scores but I noticed his GPU scores are lower than mine, one of the nation reasons I'm still stock. Because it's probably persues kernel and has issues with FPS in real world and quadrant performance.
He probably ran it 1600/1600 on performance or something on those lines
Edit: this is mine stock rooted GPU much better than his, until persues can match this without overclocking the GPU just to get the same performance I do on stock I'm not switching.

Maybe you should consider that you're not the brightest, most experienced person in this thread before talking smack.
Exposing a component to more heat means you are shortening its life, there is no doubt about that. Those with overclocked desktop CPUs often have elaborate setups with overclocking in mind. You can't add a better heatsink, or a fan to your phone. Mobile CPUs, especially, are designed to be efficient at a certain range of clock frequencies. Moving it too far from the norm means you eventually see diminishing returns.
I've fried everything from my first Commodore 64 to my current box, and everything in between. If you think the phone can function at that level for an extended period of time without failure, best of luck to you.

Dude it was part of the whole meaning of rooting and tweaking. Checking different settings for a little bit, testing them and then reverting back to defaults. I will never leave overclocked/ undervolted or vice-versa settings for a whole day... its just part of the fun of tweaking and experimenting with our devices...

I am all for overclocking, modding, tweaking, hacking, etc. Breaking **** is the best way to learn. But that doesn't mean you should push your hardware past the point of exponentially diminishing returns, and increased risk of burning your chips out. That is, unless, you have no problem with the very real possibility that you'll need to buy a new phone.

Its the Redpill v1.42... I prefer it compared to all the others i used ( stock, perseus, n.e.a.k., note2core). Those results were with stock rom but redpill kernel. Im a fan of omega but today i discovered another Rom (Hawkish extreme series Rom for N7100). I may try Perseus with that rom and see how it treats it...

Ive been working(slowly due to work) on a kernel for the lgog. I've been able to do some pretty heavy overclocking but I need some community preference.
Overclocking obviously causes more heat and reduced battery life. Higher overclocks require overvolting beyond required to maintain 1.5ghz set by Qualcomm/lg. Keep this in mind before asking for 2.0+ overclocks in daily kernels.
What top clock are you guys wanting for a performance kernel? Also are you guys interested in a reduced clocks kernel. 1.0-1.2 top clock with a lowered low end clock along with lower GPU and system clocks.
Personally I Dont see a big need in heavy overclocking on a quad core. However I would like some opinions before I release test kernels. I will attempt to see just how far the lgog can go at least once, but that will take around 10-20 test kernels to find the top speed.

The highest overclock that I would like to see is around 1.7-1.8Ghz even though I don't know what I would need my phone running that fast for. Now the under clocked kernel sounds very interesting .

I would be interested in a kernel with A 1.8 top speed slightly lower bottom end and different governors. While 1.5 is fast 1.8 with a better governor along with a 128 minimum speed would be a good comprise kernel
I don't know of anyone having speed issues to warrant an over clocking kernel, seems more for bragging rights.
I think most people would want a kernel that saves battery but doesn't compromise on speed. Also, have you looked into the wake lock issue yet?

I'll probably use faux's volt control. This is my first Qualcomm kernel so I've been mainly running through it. The n4 is far far far cleaner. Our source is a jumbled mess to an extent.
Also the other devs have found a way to run n4 stock ROM with kernel. However finding the best way for everyone to benefit is being sought after.

I am having huge wakelock issues. Will this is implemented in a future kernel from you or is this already available to use?
I think he meant Quallcom fixed it with a patch so once the kernel is build he can add that patch into his kernel along with whatever other option he chooses to build it with

The best way to undervolt is doing it your self. Not all devices can handle the same values, even if the are the same model. You an use trickster mod(to change voltages) and stability test(to test of curse) to find out the lowest you can undervolt your phone. Search on Google and you'll find guides to do it.

Let the phone do its thing with smart reflex. Imo the stability risk is not worth a minimal battery life improvement but if you want to undervolt anyway start by lowering everything by 100 and then increase by 25 at a time if you have stability issues or freezing. There's not an easy way unfortunately as some chips undervolt better than others.

I'm thinking of flashing a different kernel to my Samsung Galaxy Nexus so I can overclock the CPU/GPU. I've noticed that franco.Kernel and Trinity seem to be among the most popular kernels, but I'm not sure which one to choose. In your opinion, what is the best kernel for overclocking and why? FWIW, I have the Verizon model of the phone (toro) and am currently running CyanongenMod 4.1.2, which is based off of Android 4.2.2.

Try It And See. TIAS.. GlaDOS kernel can overclock to 2.0 GHz.. The highest I ever saw. But my phone didn't like it. As for the rest you just have to try and see which kernel suits you best.

Antutu or CF bench are good apps.. And a warning: overclocking will decrease the life of your phone! Be careful! If you want to use your phone a little longer I wouldn't do it (I wouldn't anyway because I think this phone is very fast especially with Android 4.3)..

I've decided to bump this thread because all other GNex OC threads are very dated.
I recently received the extended battery 200mah and I'm ready to overclock. I wish to retain battery life to have screen time 3-4 hour on moderate usage.
I'm current rooted on stock ROM, and I wish to simply stay with stock ROM provided battery life will remain the same (perhaps I have to undervolt)
I want to hit 1.5GHz CPU and 384MHz GPU...which is what the OMAP and PowerVR SoC's true default clocks.
Given my circumstances of stock ROM, which kernel would give me the best stability/battery life? Any kernel that somehow has OC settings built in or do they all require me to buy setCPU?

They all use setcpu or trickster mod. Regarding the kernel you just should try some out.

Do you actually notice it day to day usage? I cant think of any apps that could benefit from it besides gaming which I do very little of on mobile.

I don't OC myself. I want my gnex to last some longer. OC will wear out tour CPU.. I die it once for a day maybe two but didn't notice any improvement. I was at 1.5 GHz or something.. I think it may have some speed improvements but your battery will drain like a maniac. If you don't game I suggest you underclock: even more battery life with no speed loss!!
