*[HOW-TO]* Change (edit/color/swap) Icons in StatusBar - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

This is a basic HOW TO process to change/edit the status bar icons to add some color (or change icon) to the unbelievably mundane grey icons in the AT&T status bar. I've done this on CleanROM ACE (v3.5 through v4.9) by editing “systemUI.apk” and “framework-res.apk” (res/drawable-xhdpi folders) and dropping custom PNGs into their respective folders. You should have no issue doing this on any GNote2 ROM (another forum member confirmed works on Jedi as well). I simply swapped PNGs, using the Open Archive functionality in 7-Zip. If you are just copying images files (PNGs), this zip/open-archive method is easy and quick. There is no need to decompile/recompile the apks… you only need to understand how to use 7-ZIP…. how to open/modify file archives… and use an icon editor. (instructions attached). If you want to edit or substitute xmls, smali files, you will need to decompile apk, make edits/file drops, then recompile. You will also need the AndroidManifest.xml and resources.arsc files created from the recompile to move with the other xml changes to a flashable zip
Also attached is a list of icons I changed (including two 7z files you can extract to start your icon modding madness (WiFi, data, phone signal bars, bluetooth, mute, as well as animated GPS, upload, and download) including screenshots of some of these icons, and a step-by-step process if you wish to try this for yourself. I changed 13 icons in framework-res.apk and 22 icons in systemUI.apk. These PNGs are in the res/drawable-xhdpi sub folders.
Open, read, download attachments…. hopefully this helps you customize your status bar icons. If you don't like the color theming... np, just create any color combo you want with your favorite editor (I use "Paint.NET" which is very simple to use). Comments welcome.

Thanks, anyway to change the clock? I want it blue!

If you're running CleanROM 3.3, check out Tiffany84's thread in Theme forum... there's a blue theme with center clock mod that's pretty cool. If you go that route, I'd recommend you flash that mod first, then use that systemUI to make your custom PNG changes (otherwise that mod will overwrite your systemUI)

ok I wanna do just what you described. I want to replace the 4G icons from the international systemui with the 4G LTE icon from the ATT stock status bar. Just the 4G, I still want H+ for HSPA+ and the rest just like they are.
now when I open the Systemui.apk to my surprice all icons are there and even some that I have seen in other ROMs, even for othe devices. Hhow do I make the icons i want active and hide the sotck? just renaming them? and what name should they be? I see that some icon sets start with ics_stat and some with tw_stat. I think the stock start with just stat but I am not sure because there is some LTE icon that start with that as if they were active but does not show in the status bar

Dr Evo thanks for the PM. Ok so I'm not on ClearROM, I'm trying to cooke my own ROM with mods I have found around the site for my own use. Is based on the international ROM N7105XXDLL1.
My icon serias is the international, it has the grey numerals with the arrows right under. I don't live close to a non LTE are but when I change the APN to disable LTE I get the H+ icon and so on.
Now I got the ATT 4G LTE icon working by renaming the file, but the arrows are right on top of it and when I try to delete them the Systemui.apk FC on me.
I also used the Systemui.apk for UCLAJ2 the one from The Hybrid Saurom ROM that has the nice circle battery mod but this also has the international icons and the brightness slider does not turn off as I have it turned off on the stock one.
By the way, my daily driver this is what I got so far:
1. 4x5 with wallpaper scrolling Launcher
2. Transparent multiwindow with MWC for all apps
3. Resizable Popup Browser
4. Bravia Engine
5. Ink mod for lockscreen with color choices including red and black
6. Call Recording
7. Perseus Kernel
8. 23 toogles
9. CM10 apps like Apollo player transparent, Soundsearch with history.
10. 4.2 app like DesckClock, and Gallery includes the camera
11. Debloated but kept all SamsungDive aka Remote and S-Pen functionality, and also kept DLNA funtionality as I use this with my TV and such. All tested working
Wish list:
1. Volume skip/back mod for music players
2. Battery circle mod the one Saurom is using goes perfect with the ATT status theme. Is green and changes colors to red when is almost done
3. 4G LTE icon for LTE
4. Ink mod for live wallpaper
5. CRT-off animation
Its verry fast and it does not looses any functionality. I score 2066 on Geekbench with the stock ROM I scored 2094.
OC to CPU 1.8Ghz and GPU 800Mhz I score 2256 on geekbench and 8066 on quadrant.

@ DJBBOX The "in"/"out" arrows you probably want to keep as that does show network traffic while on LTE. The ATT "4G/ LTE" icon (tw_stat_sys_data_connected_lte_att.png) covers two levels (as the "LTE" is below the 4G) so it vying for the same space as the network traffic signal arrows. Here's an option: the attached PNG ("stat_sys_data_connected_lte.png") is just "LTE" in blue... but should allow for the network traffic arrows below as well... so when you are in an LTE area, it will show "LTE" in blue, with arrows below. If that works for you, just rename my attached file ("stat_sys_data_connected_lte.png") to "stat_sys_data_connected_4g.png", and drop it in your systemUI using 7-Zip Open Archive method.

Thanks
Thanks to the OP I changed my dull grey icons to colorful ones.

I'm glad you liked it.
This 4G icon does not come with Jedi ROM. I just photoshoped the at&t 4g logo and turned it into an icon.
I'v uploaded both a 3G and 4G icon here:

Check the "Tiffany84" thread in the Theme forum (CleanROM theming)... she also has been kind enough to take requests (if you ask nicely!)

Updated attachments (zip format) for the PNGs... now includes the "4G LTE" icon for AT&T enthusiasts. You can pretty much do what you want... just make sure your custom PNG(s) are the exact same dimension and exact file name as the ones you are replacing in the Open Archive file.

Would be nice to have a "how to" video.

PDF (How To Instructions) updated to include 4G LTE icons...

Thanks for the tutorial. Replaced my own lte icon and looking good. Had to make several adjustments to make room for the xfer arrows and prevent them from overlapping so it took a few tries.
I used this method and ninjamorph (market) to compare. I think I prefer the app, especially since it's free, fast, and easy.

you can... but you run a higher risk of things going south when messing with live (active) system files. It's always safest to use the 'empty' flashable zip Scott made and drop your files (/system/framework and or /system/app) in appropriate folder.. then flash in recovery (recommend wiping cache/dalvik...then your flashable zip) If you want to push using Root Explorer, I would recommend you first copy your active framework-res.apk file to a safe place (external sd). Copy is the operative word... do NOT rename, delete, or move an active system file (like framework-res.apk) or you're in for a FC Maelstrom party. After you've safely copied the framework-res file, then move your 'updated' framework-res.apk first to /system folder and fix permissions (rw.r.r).. then move that file to /system/framework and replace the active one. Now reboot.

UOT Kitchen

Hello people. I'm seeing alot of battery mod threads but if you want a little more customisation head over to the UOT kitchen and bake your own framework/system ui.
I did it yesterday and it worked perfectly. You just need clockwork recovery and your away.

Be sure to head over to this thread and hit thanks. Mendozinas put in alot of work :

I'm just putting this out there for people new to android or that don't know about the kitchen.
Its a great tool!
Enjoy!
Great heads up, i see ti now works with stock ROM's as well, wish they would add the CRT effect though.
this is a good website but unfortunately all that it changes for me is the battery icon and nothing else on status bar or notification area, i am confused whats up with it, its not just this its every theme i try to install does the same
well, the main prob with kitchen and our phones (S series and S2 too) is Touchwizz.
modifications via kitchen only affect framework-res.apk ;touchwizz needs modifications on twframework too.
knowing this, you can still use kitchen for :
-battery icons.
-notification icons
-glowing (at least for sliders bars and a part of the pop-up windows IF they aren't managed by twframework ).
haven't tried mods on status bars yet with my S2 but they were ok with my old galaxy S so it's probably the same.
P.S :
as always with themes, don't forget to wipe cache and dalvik cache after applying it viaCWM
hope it helps
Can someone provide me framework-res.apk and systemui.apk from stock KE7? Thanks.
How to submit it? I selected what I needed, uploaded framework-res.apk and systemui.apk but when I click Submit button nothing happens!
OK, I figured it out. But I can't select 'Transparent Status Bar' only, I don't want any modifications on status bar but just to make it Transparent! Maybe it's not allowed!

Hey all,
Just having an issue with UOT kitchen ever since I flashed to Lite'ning ROM 1.4 on KF1. Getting SHTF errors every time I try to cook files now, anyone else having this issue?
I created my first theme and it worked, however i lost the screen capture feature, does anyone know why?
Hi mendozinas,
Because i have changed my phone to GS S2(i9100) and would you please tell me this version UOT Kitchen whether support GS S2(i9100) + SpeedMod SGS2 [K1-T31 CWM4 CIFS ROOT] ?
Thanks!
I've cooked my battery icon for xxkg1 2.3.3 but i'm asking if is it possible to use the "SCB with %" (Version C, New charger for example) and hybrid charge animation.
Thanks!

[Q] Help, Statusbar themes?

Can one of you guru's give a noob a hand and tell me what i'm doing wrong.
no matter what i do i can't seem to theme the status bar.
I've created a new statusbar_background.9.png (yes i know .9.pngs are odd)
but i can't seem to actually make the phone take the change.
everything else i try and change shows up with no problem.
i've tried everything i could think of but am sure i'm missing something.
this file (attached) seems to do what i want if i drop it in framework-res on my old phone. or systemui on my tablet.
there is a statusbar_background.9.png in systemui but ????
but on the touch even if i edit the .xml and call it as drawable both as a .9 and a normal .png and i can't seem to make the touch like the change. i don't get a FC i just see the standard black bar. if i just delete the png i do get a fc though so...
I've even tried with a solid red bar just to see if it was the transparency but no go.
is it calling a different statusbar_background from somewhere i just can't find?
Many thanks to the person who tells me how im an idiot
http://www.multiupload.com/YOGY8OQCIE (mirror same as attached)
Ahh yes the dreaded 9.PNG file... it drives us themers nuts... it takes special edit which a little more than I can explain here. Search edit 9.PNG and I think you will find threads that will explain it in depth... probably not the answer you wanted but there are people on xda who have explained it much better than could...
thanks i'll give it a few more shots. but i'm fairly certain i created the .9.png correctly as it works on a couple other devices. and all my other .9 edits seem to work as intended. just was wondering if it was possible that it really wasn't the statusbar_background.9.png in systemui.apk that themed the status bar by some chance. as it seemed to FC if i had an incorrectly made png, but boots fine just with no change if i use one i'm pretty sure works.
just wish some themer had skinned the statusbar at all so i'd know it was just me being a mooley
I'm wondering the same thing, as I've changed almost everything else to MIUI style status indicators just by swapping PNG's in the drawable-hdpi folders. Crysis21 uses an HTC style status bar in his SensatioN ROM, and I've downloaded it to search the files and still can't find where the hell the change is made.
Yea just seems to want to foil my every try. It should just be the status_bar.9.png in systemui and mine seems to work on my buddies international s2 but for some reason ........ Dunno it may take me a while but ill figure it out eventually. Unless some kind soul steps in and shows us the answer

[Q] Pull Down Bar Background

Hello i was wanting to know how to change the image in the pulldown bar like you see in the UOT kitchen and if its possible to change the top buttons images like the wifi on / off and 4G on /off ect or the whole button itself
there in the SystemUI.apk located in system/apps
res/drawablehdpi folder
just edit in any image editor but try and stay away from the .9.pngs they are special and a pain in the bum.
you can just change .apk to .zip to unzip then rezip and rename.apk
you want the quicklaunch icons for the drop down icons
and status_bar_background for the actual background
thank you bro for such a fast answer
no problem i just happen to be trollin through
do you happen to know were the battery images are ?
and if i could just remove all the stock ones with ones from another theme for my phone ?
battery images are in framework-res
system/framework
if using ones from another phone you'll probably need to do some renaming
most roms currently on our phone use full 100 % increments
if i remember correctly there are 203 total 100 unplugged
100 plugged and a full empty and unknown
thanks again you have been a huge help
anytime
if noone shares the info this stuff can be a royal pain.
If you use the UOT Kitchen and keep getting errors, try un-checking Patch9 autofix. This will not decompile the 9patch images and may allow your theme to build. It worked for me with modding ACS Ice Cream Sandwich Theme (modded battery only).
thank you
and are there any other theme kitchens or rom kitchens for our phone ?
oh and i noticed there are two different default pull-down backgrounds one under systemUI.apk and one under the frameworks.apk and both are different sizes and dimensions , witch ones do i change ? or do i change both ?
the one you want for the drop down background is
status_bar_background.png
in SystemUI.apk

I'm fairly new to Android, coming from my FrankenPre to the Epic Touch. I want to begin editing the icons and images on my phone, and I've been exploring some ROMs ansd themes and switching up some icons, which have worked fine. However, I have no idea exactly where all the images are kept. For instance, I tried to change the stock Email icon, but the images I changed weren't right, and I was somehow left with the "Android Robot" icon.
My question is, seeing as how you know where these images reside on the phone, how do I go about knowing which icons are where, and which ones I need to change? Is there a list somewhere of the stock system images and their locations, or is it trial and error to figure out where they are? Thanks for the help.

How to remove H+ icon

Hello everybody,
I started this thread because I'm having a not very important but annoying problem,I'm sure more people face this.
Case:

Theming with UOT-kitchen goes fine,BUT in the statusbar the H+ icon remains original.

Hi,
You're right my friend, got the same problem with my [MODS)..... How to replace easily the H+ icon please...? Good question...
It's not exactly rocket science, have you looked inside the UOT kitchen file to make sure they new icons are there?

It doesnt use "H" icons for "H+", they are called by two differnt names:
"stat_sys_data_connected_h.png"
"stat_sys_data_connected_h_plus.png"
You need to look inside and see if there are any "H+" icons inside your UOT zip, im guessing UOT doesnt have them to put in your zip so it will use the default."H+"
If they arent included you can copy the "H" icons outside and rename to include "_plus" like above then put them into your zip and flash.
But this will show a H instead of H+.
Edit: After looking at the kalagas icon set on UOT there is no H+ icons, so if the other icon sets are the same you will never replace your original H+ icons unless they update the kitchen to include them.
The workaround is to manually edit them yourself, either by following the above or using a image editor to add the "+" symbol to thew icon.

How do I replace battery icons in ICS

I'm currently using Calk's 1.6 stock based ICS rom and cannot find the percentage battery icons so I can replace them with something different. In GB it was pretty easy but I guess some things have changed with ICS. I would rather know how to do this manually, I do not want an app or use the UOT for this. Tnx.
I cannot help you with that ROM but if you look at different ROM's, particularly the Blu Kuban, there are many battery styles you can choose from. I installed this ROM last weekend and am thoroughly enjoying it. You can do lots of customization's with it.

It is really quite tricky unless you have a theming background. If I remember right the files you need to modify are in the systemui.apk. You would need to decompile it, swap the image files, recompile it and then push it to system/app.
I'd recommend going the easy route and trying ROM Toolbox Pro.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm not shy about de/recompiling apk's but in ICS I don't think its as easy as swapping out some .png files like in GB. I've already looked in systemui and framework and the battery icons are solid, whereas the rom shows the battery percentage icons.
You can use the UOT Kitchen here: http://uot.dakra.lt/kitchen/
Pick the icons you want, upload the framework files from your rom, and you get a flashable zip. Very easy (assuming they have an icon style you like of course).

Sorry, once again I want to do this manually by reprogramming systemui/framework and do not want to use any third party app or the UOT. Thanks.
The files are in the SystemUI.apk file. You need to replace ALL the files named stat_sys_battery*.png (there will usually be like 100 for % and another 100 for charge) ex: stat_sys_battery_98.png & stat_sys_battery_charge_anim99.png
You will find the files in res/drawable-hdpi
All you need to do is replace the existing ones with the new ones. I would make a backup cause stuff does go wrong. Also I find it easiest to replace the SystemUI.apk using a flashable zip file.
If you need help with any of this just let me know.

Ok, finally a sane person.
Just kidding, everyone means well...
Anyway, I am going to attach the framework & systemui.apk so you can see what I'm talking about. I am on Calk's v1.6 from here (in case you're not familiar with it, there are screenshots of the stock TW looking desktops):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527041
As you can see, the rom's using a 1% battery percentage icon set. However, they can not be found in either framework or systemui.
I know it should be that easy but I just don't know on this stock FE22 based rom.
Edit: There are 26 battery icons in systemui. They do appear to be similar to the ones for the rom but the numbers are missing from the icons so I'm taking a stab that somehow the numbers are superimposed over the icon and this rom does not use the entire 200 or so individual icons if that makes any sense. Gonna test that theory.
Ok, finally figured it out. The developer's aren't putting the full 1% battery icons in yet and the stat_sys_battery.xml files haven't been edited for that yet either. Guess I'll just have to change that .
Thanks everyone.

They do appear to be similar to the ones for the rom but the numbers are missing from the icons so I'm taking a stab that somehow the numbers are superimposed over the icon and this rom does not use the entire 200 or so individual icons if that makes any sense. Gonna test that theory.

I confirmed the battery percentage numbers displayed on the status bar are hard coded into the stock ICS rom. I even removed all of the battery png files and the only thing that remains is a lonely little '89%' showing in the notification bar w/o the icon around it.
Anyone know where the code for that might be?
Found this too. Settings, display

Do you want me to edit the xml for ya to add the battery images and then send you the sytemui? Or I could send you the xml files to replace the old ones.

Thanks Dazed. I finally got it all figured out. What was killing me was Calk has a bad .9 png file in the systemui so it refused to recompile correctly until I corrected it.
True 1% battery (stock ICS didn't have true 1% .png's), Green Goblin sig bar, White Clock & Big Battery.
I've attached a screenshot.
Edit: I did edit the battery xml's for the 100 or so .png files I added to systemui btw. Plus I enjoy learning to do it myself. We're kinda starting over with ICS.

Cool. I know the ICS apk's can be a big pain at times getting them to decompile and compile. Glad you got it man.

Seeing this post amazes me... even the machine we know as TD was once like the rest of us. Yet another reason I love XDA.
