Look up unrevoked and use the one that says "unrevoked forever", then verify that your radio version is listed on there and get root using that

That's not going to work without becoming complicated. Unrevoked-forever only works on the radios that came with either Froyo or Eclair (It was patched when Gingerbread was released), which means that the whole operating system would have to be downgraded because the phone is not S-OFF to flash radios. There is no tool to S-OFF Hboot 2.18 directly.

4.24.651.1 root?

So I have already heard that you do not want to do the ota update because it has not been unlocked. I'm not sure which version it is but my phone came with 2.2.3, 4.24.651.1. Which version is safe to attempt root?

You cannot root if you have 2.3.3 with s-on.
(To check if you have s-on or s-off you go to your bootloader and look next to the radio version)
Being has your preloaded with 2.3.3 you're probably s-on and out of luck.
With all due respect, search button is your friend.
Only 2.2...so you can't root.

[Q] higer chances of bricking with HTC evo 4g root 2.3.5?

I am finally ready to root. I want to root for one purpose only......wifi hotspot. I know it has risk, but I'm eligible for an upgrade so worst case scenario.....I'll upgrade. I really don't want to, though.
Soo......I really don't want to try this if the risk is too great for bricking. But if the risk is minimal, then could someone tell me the best step by step guide out there? I'm not that savvy but follow directions well.
I have the very first EVO 4g that came out on June 4, 2010. I have upgraded to 2.3.5 ota. Baseband version 2.15.00.12.19, kennel version 2.6.35.10
Build number 4.67.651.3 XL239674 with software number 4.67.651.3. PRI version 2.33_003, PRL version 60687
Imho its hard to brick your evo and if all you want to do is use it for tether I wouldnt bother with the s-off process untill u get more advance in rooting..here's an awesome guide by captian_throwback make sure u think him

Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
Bricking is actually difficult to do unless your screwing around with your system lol. Its actually quite simple. After you root, you download a ROM(Its basically a UI and how the phone works) and then you Flash it(install it). Youl have a lot of terms to learn lol
I finally rooted mine today for the first time with 2.3.5 and h-boot 2.18 and I used HTC Dev to unlock the bootloader and I must say that it was a pain in the butt. I got it unlocked and tried using the PC36IMG.ZIP to install a Amon RA Recovery and it kept telling me that the main version is newer or something like that. I ended up having to use fastboot to flash the recovery image. Then after installing recovery I had to use the option in recovery to install superuser (really glad that was there)
Then after all that I found the thread using revolutionary plus to root h-boot 2.18 which I'm sure would have made it a lot easier.
I too just wanted root for one reason, to remove bloatware

Not quite true. You can downgrade any Hboot version including 2.18 with Tacoroot, then flashing the misc partition with the general mtd-eng.img file. It will bypass the HTC signature check for their signed PC36IMG and RUU files. I've done it quite a few times with the "LOCKED OOW" bootloaders.

That's only on the newer phones with the newer hardware with erasesize 40000. Then it will brick. I have the old hardware erasesize 20000 and have been on every Hboot possible including 2.18 and successfully downgraded back to every Hboot, including 0.97.
You need a hex edited 0.76 PC36IMG file in order to trick the current Hboot to think that you are flashing one above 0.97, or else it will fail.
Also, just got my galaxy s3 yesterday also, love it.

Well, you originally gave the assumption that the only way to downgrade Hboot 2.18 was to unlock it, which is not true. Captain Throwback has proven this. You did not mention rooting 2.18 first to downgrade which does not necessarily require unlocking the bootloader. Your exact words were:
"You can't downgrade your hboot till you unlock it.....well that's true for the new 2.18..."
Anyway, I'm sure now that you meant that the only way that that particular person could downgrade the Hboot was by unlocking the bootloader, and not that the only way possible to downgrade the Hboot was by unlocking the bootloader.

There is no 2.18 baseband for the Supersonic.
Sorry meant HBoot.
Why would you want to upgrade hboot?
It makes it harder to obtain s-off

^This.
It does exist, though. It's very close, even.
The reason why I want it is because of flashing back to stock. If you unlock using the htc dev site you are pretty much locked into 2.18. And is the reason why I am looking for a stock ruu with hboot of 2.18.
On a side note I might have another way around my problem. Anyone have the stock recovery image that can be flashed?
