This is a screenshot of what is draining my battery. When I click on it I can't tell what the hell it does. It contains zero bits of data as an app. It does show this file com.sec.android.providers.downloads when I click on the media arrow.
From my research I have found that this is bloatware and that it is not bloatware. I have read to remove and not to remove it.
Can somebody please tell me what this is or does?
Any information would be appreciated.
I am not sure if I posted my screen shot correctly

Just a thought. It looks like you rebooted the device three times. Once looks like it was into recovery.
And removed the SD card before taking the screenshot?
When the phone reboots it scans all media on the device.
If you didn't have the reboot periods, I would think it was a wake-clock.
If I reboot my device, I Always have it plugged in for at least 15 min. to make up for the extra drain caused by scanning files (Media)
Also IMO Juice Defender is a waste of time.
And this thread should be in Q&A
Edit2: I reported the thread so It can be moved.
Remember, if your gonna be asking a question - Go to Q&A

Ok, I bought better battery stats but I have to go to bed so I will have to post a screen shot of my running apps tomorrow and what this new app tells me.
Thanks for the replies so far.

I've read a couple other posts like yours and the problem was some corrupted media files. If Better Battery Stats shows you that the media scanner service is running all the time then that's your problem. You find and delete the bad files or disable the service so it's not scanning constantly and you should be good. (Obviously better is the former).
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app

I am the original poster and I do tend to believe that the corrupted media files may have been the issue. For the past few days I have been getting the old "media card removed unexpectedly" message at random times. Yesterday I copied everything to my computer and reformatted the 32 gb sd sandisk ultra card. I then copied some files back on to the card and kept getting messages like blank sd card. Eventually neither the phone nor my Macbook recognized the card. I thought it might just be the phone or card so I tried my 16gb Sandisk card I had and it was recognized right away on both devices.
I finally just put in my 16gb card in the phone and transferred my pictures to it. I am initiating a warranty claim with Sandisk. I bought the card on October 22. I am not happy about this, especially since reading how many problems others have had with the same card.
Since using the old 16gb ultra card and deleteting the android drm process using Titanium Backup, This MEDIA thing is essentially gone. I now have 68 percent left on my batter with 9 hours and 58 since it was unplugged. I did use my phone today at work.
Thanks for all the advice. I would post some battery stat items and screen shots of what I have running but I have a baby screaming with pink eye and a two year old that needs attention as well.

Yikes... you passed your bad mojo to me
wow... had just read this thread and bam.... now I have a runaway "Android media process" running (45% of CPU...).. tried to kill service, but it just restarts! I'm getting all sorts of CPU/Memory threshold warnings, so not sure why it continues to run... and why it can't be shutdown (it's possessed). It ran for 2 hrs and still won't shut down. Any ideas/ investigative steps I need to take to figure out why it's running and how to stop it... Thx.

Did you try what op did and pull your sd card, reboot and see what happens?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium

Verizon's Backup Assistant plus was the cause of my media runaway battery use. I turned it off and the problem went away.

When I had s3 I used an app called media scan root it stopped the media scanning on boot. I think scanning all those little files in the cwm or twrp backup folders was what was causing it. Not sure but the app did help me and it is worth a try

I don't know if anyone has seen this or possibly knows what it may be, it shows up in spare parts, network usage. I cannot click on it to see what it could be, get the force stop msg. Any help would be greatly appreciated, my battery life is absolutely horrible. Running fresh rom, slayers cyan dragon theme, tried several different kernels and nothing seems to help, also tried downgrading pri.
Thank You

I recently saw a post asking about the "0" and the horrific battery life. While no one ever figured out what it was, the op solved the issue by backing up his apps & data with titanium, flashing Calkulin's format all zip, then reflashing his rom & kernel. I think he slowly restored apps so he could watch for the issue coming back.
Try a search & you might come up with the thread. I would definitely try the format all zip, though.

Try reading the logcat file. Get alogcat from market. You'll see either a block or multiple calls to some apk.
You call also get autostarts from market and disallow activation of intentions / events which cause "hangs" (spinning waiting) from the apk you found in logcat.
Thank you, I'll try that also.

Widgets, Live wallpaper Messaging clients Or any other client that receive notifications from the internet Will have your battery murdered like a runaway slave.
Typically a battery is only good for 200 to 250 charges. If it was charge properly every time. Let's face it nobody even knows how to charge the battery properly.
*edit please add around 900 more to the above figures for li-ion batts. Figures I quoted were for standard rechargeables.
Also check that you're not constantly running wifi and bluetooth. 4 g and 3g modes eat more battery than 2 g mode. Do what I do disable all wireless connections not in use.
If you ever noticed the display eats most of your battery power. turn down the brightness whenever you can see the screen clearly.
Applications that stream data over the internet will eat your battery quickly.
That's about all I can think of. Well 1 more thing. Buy a new battery and see if that doesn't help. (try èbáÿ)

Definitely thinking about buying a new battery, mine completely died about 3 weeks ago and I had a hell of a time to get it to pick up a charge again. That's probably my main problem I'm guessing. I just can't figure out the 0 in spare parts, network usage. I tried flashing a fresh version of fresh rom and individually reinstalling every app I had before, seemed to work for awhile, it didn't show back up. Waited awhile and reflashed Slayer's cyan theme and now it's back. Battery life was still **** before it showed up again though. Good advice and thank you, I believe I'll try a new battery.

You'll have to forgive me (i feel like an ass) I was in a hurry the other day. A UID under linux is a user I d. For general phone usage you should have 0 of these! Are you
using google admin?
If you have root try this in your terminal:

This file should not exist!

I'm at a loss as to what it may be, the 0 hasn't appeared yet on this rom, it's an asop rom, not sure if it has anything to do with sense or not. I'll nand back to my original setup and post logcat or pm it to you would probably be better. Thank you

Android system draining battery

The android system is draining my battery pretty badly. It's taking about 25 percent of my battery. I have my Gsiff_daemon deleted, but it's still taking quite a lot of my battery. My phone would go down 1 percent every 5 mins in sleep mode. Is this normal and how can I decrease the battery usage of android system? I'm on 4.0.4 stock rooted.

When you have battery issues you need to post a battery info screenshot. Showing your battery use and what is using it. It will help Diagnose the issue.
IMO (I am not pro) I would think being on stock you should have no problem although you are rooted so I think. Its either a hardware issue or something you did. How did you root your phone? if you followed a Tutorial what tutorial did you use?
What i would do is first charge the phone to 100% then let it drain to around 5% and post a screenshot of your battery usage, I would also post a History Screenshot too.
After you have done that you can patiently wait as i bet someone more knowledgeable than I will post something about your issue.
Although Since your rooted you could Install a New Kernel that is made for battery life. That should help if your ROM is not the suspect (I think it could be) Next I would also flash a good stock based rom (that is if you like and want stock based). Pimp My Rom also Has some Battery Saving Tweeks in it if you wish to not flash a ROM try PMR to tweak your system.
I didn't really cared about my battery life before since I always have extra carried with me at all times. But my power is out because of hurricane sandy and I have no idea when will the power be back up. Now every percent battery counts since I won't be able to charge. I'll try to put screen shots up but I only have my phone because my laptop battery died already.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Go into your battery screen and tap on Android System and then scroll down. it will show you all the processes that are associated with that particular facet of the ROM/Battery. In there, you can see what is being used by Android System and hopefully something will spark your eye. Do you have an Alarm/Clock setting, Calendar, media scanning,...? You can force close the offender.
Also you can go into Developer Options and tick Show CPU and it will show an overlay on your homescreen that will show real-time CPU usage.
I turned on cpu usage in the devekoper options and I see that x.xx/x.xx/x.xx (x are numbers I can't track them down because they're constantly changing) are always on the top and takes up quite a lot of cpu. Is that something I need to worry about?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
I would reboot and once it is back up and running, go to Settings>Apps>Running and FC everything that you are not using. Then switched to Cached and FC everything that populated over from running and anything else that you don't need.
When I say need, I understand that you are in the danger zone and w/o power. You don't need Facebook, MediaHub, Music/Video,...Not that those are specific to you, but if you only have one battery left with no power in the future, then I suggest going bare bones for the time beaing.
***************
Sidenote: I was just reading about some things and see that some people in NYC are using Hotels/Gas Stations/ Stores that still have power to charge up the cell phones. Not sure where you are but might be worth looking into. How many times have you gone into that corner store? Do they recognize you? Maybe they could share some power. See where I am going with this?
Be safe
I had "Android System" eating my battery too. I'm stock/rooted. I had Cerberus installed briefly, uninstalled - about when my phone started being hot (bottom third) when sleeping in my pocket. Drove me nuts - sorry, but I simply cant tolerate an IDLE phone getting hot in my pocket! Anyway, I rebooted the phone, turned it off, pulled the battery, installed Better Battery Stats - eventually the phone stopped having massive drainage from "Android System" and now it's not hot anymore whether it's on browsing the web or idle.
I guess there are two points to my post 1) the way I could tell my problem was fixed was the phone stopped getting hot -and- 2) the problem hasn't come back for me after a simple fix of multiple-power cycles. I've seen mixed results with a fair number of people saying that rebooting their phone fixed there problem and about an equal number saying the problem either wasn't fixed by rebooting or it came back again later.
If it happened to me again I would open a Terminal and run the "top" command and just keep watching it until I figured out what was eating up my battery (CPU time).
EDIT: Oh - and to confuse things more I used Titanium Backup (pro) to freeze/un-install some of the T-mobile bloatware in addition to setting email to sync slightly less often...
I have my power back on and factory reset my phone. I see android system had already taken 30% of my battery after about an hour of use. There is close to nothing on my phone since it just got factory reset. I don't even know what to do anymore, I really don't want this "android system" sucking so much of my battery.
Id suggest flashing the full stock fw via Odin. Possibly something got corrupted during an update maybe.
I saw uou used Show cpu usage earlier. Don't worry bout the numbers, but watch for the processes that seem to stay at the top and let us know which they are.
You can get the fw from my thread here.

The cpu usage is very high I think it constantly stays at 1.2+ 2+ 4+. It can go as high as 9. I'll try flashing stock rom again and see how that goes later today.

Ok, but beneath those numbers you should see the list of processes. Theyll be constantly changing but you should be able to pick out which ones seem to stay at the top.

The only thing below the cpu usage is the system_server. Android system is only hogging 11% of my battery today. I don't know why was it at 30% yesterday but it seems normal now.

Phone never sleeps when screen is off?

I am currently running liquidsmooth RC7 and the problem I'm having is that my phone never sleeps and that causes me to lose a lot of battery even when the screen is off. Before putting my phone on charging, my battery life is about 60 percent remaining on 7 and a half hours total with about 1 and a half hour of screen time.

Get the Better Battery Stats app from the market and use it to figure out what's wakelocking your phone. Either freeze, uninstall, change sync settings, or limit auto starts on the problematic apps.
Russian smashed across the interwebz from my T-Mobile Galaxy S2. Please hit thanks if I helped.
Better Battery Stats is the way to go. I had the same issue on Liquid Smooth RC7. You need to look for the partial wake locks after unplugged. The biggest changes I made was to change syncing on most apps to 3-4 hours. I can now get a deep sleep nearly indef. You will find a couple OS based wake locks that are triggered by apps you have running. just have to week them out one at a time. I can get two days straight off the phone with minimal use.
I just installed version 1.11.00 and it says no reference set yet.

You need to pick one on the main screen of the app. This option is the one that allows you to pick certain things like Since Unplugged, Since Boot, Since Screen Off, etc. This is the "reference" point from which BBS will show you wakelocks from. For the other option, you're most likely looking for "Partial Wakelocks". It's also gonna take some time to gather stats. For a quicker check, I usually use Since Unplugged, plug my phone in, make sure music and other foreground apps are closed, unplug it, don't use the phone, and check BBS in an hour or two. Check the XDA thread for the app if you have more questions about it. I just know the basics of the app. ~_~

Try scanning both SD cards for bad media files, then running a checkdisk on them if you have Windows, if you haven't tried that. It fixed my media scanning issues.

No reference is usually from it not having a start point. Meaning you have to let it charge to 100% then unplug it with BBS running. Or if you just installed it, plug it in and unplug it. It will start from there.
"Since Unplugged" it the setting to use. Along with partial wake locks. I also highly suggest the 2x2 widget that goes with it. Just tap on it for a refresh of the new info. Will display how long you've been in each state.
What I did was I download juice defender and I under clock it when I lock/put it to sleep and before I go to sleep I close the applications that take a lot of ram. Overall when my phone goes to sleep it only loses around 1-5 percent which is way better than lossing 30%-50% every night

[Q] Battery Drain. Media Server NO SD card, Android System

So im getting some battery drain here and this phone is just 4 days old. I know time doesnt matter but im just saying ive given the battery some time to get better with the charges. First day i had to charge it twice, same with second day. Third day i disabled the CDMA/LTE radio and i had to briefly charge it.
Now today its been up for about 13 hours and its at 20% with mid-heavy usage. I dont think the battery is bad but i think IT COULD DO BETTER for a 2100mAh battery. Today i accidentally (from 8 am to 4 pm) ran with the CDMA/LTE setting on then i changed it to CDMA ONLY but battery was pretty much slightly better... I live in Puerto Rico so we are getting the new LTE Vision antennas soon here (decem 16. CANT WAIT) throughout the whole island
Something is weird... the first two days i noticed the battery drain so i noticed the SD card media server corrupt file bug but heres the thing... i took out my SD card and the media server process is still there :/ Shouldnt it have stopped? There is no more SD card for there to be a corrupt file problem. Also why is the Android process so high up on the list? should be about 85% screen and 15% the rest...
Any ideas why or who could be the culprit? I apologize for not using BetterBatteryStats as i havent purchased it and dont really intend on spending time on it. I love my phone just fine and i would hate to have to root it and install CM10.1 because i dont want to deal with updating my device every week because im OCD about updates.
Suggestions?
PS: i also run google now and Maps for latitude because i like sharing with my friends my location. Is latitude responsible for the whole Maps app battery usage? Is there a way for me to reduce it without manually having to update my location? Like in longer automatic intervals. Would disabling "report from this device" and "location reporting" turn off the latitude location sharing ?

unfortunately not, both are located somewhere inside the /system folder
as for BetterBatteryStats, there should be a thread here with an XDA version which is free for members
lastly, the 12/16 LTE launch is only for the south of the island, or so they've advertised (I could use it in Hato Rey, I've only gotten 1x for the past month and a half)
I know but wishful thinking about the LTE. Heard it should be island wise by February.
So I guess rooting is the best way to get rid of these Battery problems but then even if I stay on the stock ROM I won't be able to upgrade OTA (not that it's been mentioned anyways)
I think I've done my best to reduce the battery drain minus turning off the maps thing

Turned off automatic location settings because this is insane. And screen brightness is set to automatic. At this hour it shouldn't be too bright.

Just setting this up in my note to see if it does what it claims
I'm not a fan of battery saver apps at all so I'm skeptical right off the bat
but this is from xiam... and it's free... and it has some interesting stuff packed In there so what the heck
it takes 4 days of "learning mode" before it starts battery savings based on your usage
anybody made it thru the 4 days yet?
I see people in the comments going from 10 hours to 18 hours battery life with moderate use but that doesn't make sense to me... This app looks like it's constructed to save battery when the phone is not in use and I don't really have that problem... i lay my phone down at night with 97% and I wake up in the morning with 96%.... how you gonna gimme 30% increase on 1% drain?
But I'm still curious anyway...
Thanks for giving it a test run for the rest of us. Looking forward to your results. I'm using Greenify now so a comparison would be cool.
Also if the guru works with system apps as well.
If something is too good to be true... It usually is?

So I've had it in my Note for 2 days now... not having any problems with lag or anything like that... still showing 1day 19hrs until the battery savings kick in based on learning mode... (funny reading the comments in the play store "had this running for 3 days and it doesn't help at all!!! Uninstalled!!!"... we'll duhhhh... it never made it out of learning mode ya goofballs)
But anyways... i noticed my battery actually draining a bit quicker during this learning phase ... whatever... I'm just being patient and following the instructions and we'll see in a couple days how this plays out.
I installed also and am awaiting to see how it goes. I will post findings later also..

Okay I have passed the 4 day mark after installing this it does help a lil not much If you look in the apps form the aplication it only stops services on what you use the most so if yo inly open a few apps during the learning process its not going to do much but if you open every app you have constantly you will get a much better chance of the app stoping other services you may or may not need

uninstalled
Didn't do anything for me at all... but there's probly a good reason why...
i run my Note bare bones as it is... Beans ROM heavily Debloated... no sync apps running... no facebook/no twitter/no magazine etc... no location services running unless i need them for something... only thing that starts and syncs data would be an email app and Gmail ... this snapdragon app basically tries to save you battery whenever you are not using the phone but i already have mine set up to do that all the time anyway so it didn't help at all... basically just another app running all the damn time.
I would think this app is for the casual user who doesn't take command of their device in the first place (or doesn't know how) or has a bazillion things always running and can't be bothered always trying to control them all. Nothing to see here for the power user who's always on their device or users like me who stripped it all down to beast mode.

Same here for me. I just uninstalled it. I have rom toolbox and other things running also, so I am in the same category as you. It doesn't seem to do a whole ton for me and my device.
Guys thanks for the information. Looks like I will just stick to Greenify. Maybe I will recommend to my friends that don't root and know much about their phone.
