To know if you have recovery you boot into bootloader then select recovery if phone reboots then you don't have recovery but if you dp it will enter like a program that means you have recovery so you have to flash the stock one try it out and reply

Read this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705484
It is wise to save the OTA.zip somwhere before you proceed the updating process. The stock boot & recovery img inside the firmware.zip inside the OTA.zip will helps you later on if the updating process is stuck in between.
And importantly, make a nandroid backup for the newly updated software version in case you need to revert to stock and there is no RUU available.
Now you just have to flash stock recovery

As you said, you already have a CWM recovery, then you need a stock recovery flashed first. The next question is which stock recovery ? The one that listed on that thread is 1.56 version which is meant for hboot 1.16. So check what is you hboot now ? If it is still 1.16, then you can use that recovery. If it is 1.17, you need a 1.58 or 2.09 recovery.

thank you so much,my software number is 2.09.720.1 so which recovery file should i download?
thank you.
There is none for 2.09.720.1 available in this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1748684
So the best bet that I can suggest is save the OTA.zip as I mentioned earlier and use the recovery that comes with the OTA.
Or you can try 2.09.707.1 that I posted here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30809441&postcount=11 but not so sure whether it will work or not but it should.

[Q] Update to 3.14.161.27 (4.1.1)

Hi there,
i dont know what to do...
I have a german htc one x from Vodafone.
I tried TWRP and CWM Recovery to install the new Update to 3.14.161.27 but i always get "Error 7" and the installation aborts.
System info:
Adroid: 4.0.4
Software: 2.17.161.4
CID: VODAP102
HBOOT: 1.12.0000
Recovery: TWRP 5.8.4.0
Can you help me and tell me how to fix my Problem.
King regards
Peter
What do you mean, are you on stock rom and tried to do the official update with the custom recovery ?
If you have 100% stock rom, stock boot.img and stock recovery you can update
http://db.tt/U5CK4noo
Flash this one and try again. Keep the bootloader unlocked .... Its no problem
I tried your Recovery but it didnt worked..
I have stock rom, stock recovery (now) and i think i have stock boot.img.
if my boot.img is the prob how can i change it?
i used the Hasoon200 tool to root my phone nothing else was done
very big thanks for your help
If you are really sure you have the nandroid backup of your original stock rom the stock boot.img should be inside that nandroid backup folder !
If you made any changes to the stock rom like deleting system apps or any other bloatware then the update will also fail

You have to flash the boot.img from fastboot
simply put the boot.img in the fastboot folder and run the following commands
Code:
fastboot boot boot.img

this happens if a not advised person is trying to root hios phone
That's probably the problem, the other problem is that i didn't see the matching ruu on HTCruu.com and i also didn't see the nandroid backup you need in the nandroid backup collection thread.
You have an option to upgrade to jellybean ! Flash the firmware the unofficial way , your cid is supported and after flashing the firmware you have the updated hboot to flash JB roms
I give you the link in a minute
---------- Post added at 11:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:06 PM ----------
Here you can download the firmware matching your cid
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957376
I have to check for a detailed guide, I never done this myself so I don't know to much about it
But after that you are stuck to a custom rom......
ok very big thanks, i will think about it and i will see what i do tomorrow...
but very very big thanks for the fast help... i remeber for me : "never delete system apps you idiot"
Yeah well .... To late now
Here i have the firmware flasher , you have to download the firmware in the first link i gave you and this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1924003
Has the tool where you have to put the firmware in.
Don't ask me how this works exactly, never done this myself but read the OP of the threads really carefully !
Wohoo its working
I have found my system backup recovered it and the update works
big thanks for your help,... I would never have come to a missing system app
and sry for my bad english
Thx

[help] need boot.imb H3G JB

Hello,
need the boot.img for H3g__001 JB (3.14.771.34) I've found the backup but I want it know and I can't wait until the download finished
the second thing: what's the best way to root this device with this CID ?
thank's
Useless, wait for the download to finish. Only the boot.img is pretty much useless without the matching stock modules that are backed up in the nandroid.
How to root ?
Install the SU.zip in recovery and reboot.
I assume you are already unlocked and running a custom rom and want to return to stock because you are downloading a nandroid backup.

you're sure that we can run custom rom with this CID H3G__001 ?
How far are you anyway and why are you downloading a nandroid backup ?
And yes any hox and any cid can run a custom rom, custom roms are not cid dependant !
But please give me more info on your status so i can understand it all better

there's three or four months we could not run custom rom with the stock CID, and when I've tried to run custom with H3G CID the device sucked on htc logo until I've download the nandroid backup to reinstall it with recovery
so if know it's possible can you show me the best way to root it ?
Thank's
I think you are talking about JB roms only. Before that you could install custom roms....only ICS ones because the official JB wasn't released at that time.
Give me your exact true main version number
Fastboot getvar version-main
Post the outcome here please. And did you already install a custom recovery ?

I just installed CWM with root
Then you can install any rom from this hox section.
1: make a nandroid backup backup of the stock rom and keep it safe
2: flash the boot.img from the new rom
3: make a full wipe in the recovery
4: install the new rom via the recovery
5: reboot

That seems to be as a JB firmware... so I'm sure you can install any custom roms out here..
After flashing the custom recovery, you need to install the superSU.zip file from recovery : http://d-h.st/kG0
By doing this you will get full root access!
However, if your going to install a custom rom, you don't need to root, just unlock the bootloader, flash a custom recovery, flash boot.img via fastboot, head over to recovery and wipe everything (Data/cache/dalvic) and format /system... and then install the rom.zip!
Ok thank you very much

when i instal that RUU change my main version
That ruu does not work. When you unlock the bootloader and flash a custom rom you need to make nandroid backup. That ruu could not wipe your phone because it doesn't install at all ! Now you can only return to stock with a stock nand backup.
So what's the issue ? What did you do ?
You previously installed the 2.17 ruu. Then updated the phone ..... and then ?

You can't downgrade to 4.0.4 if you are not S-OFF. And no S-OFF for HOX
Give us the result of the command

Tho looks like you want to downgrade, so only if u have an s-offed hox you can do. Which u might have since you installed diffderent ruu.

I have Installed
3.28.401.6 - TWRP Thanks to 10rdan
now I Found The Trouble What I mentioned every time I tried To update the phone goes for Recovery Can you explain How To fix This Step by Step Please
1. Are you sure that's the correct backup ? You mentioned earlier your stock ROM is 4.4.2 which is should be 1.54.401.5 or 1.54.401.10
Post result of fastboot getvar all (delete serial no. & imei no.) to determine the correct version.
2. You need to replace the TWRP that you installed with a stock recovery.img
OTA needs stock recovery.img not TWRP.img
Can't use TWRP for OTA update, use only stock recovery
