Well after much deliberation I decided to make the jump to the Maxx HD. The M, while awesome, just can't get me through a full day of work. I really wanted a phone that I could push all my email, run everything and still have battery when I go to bed. My friend has the Maxx HD and gets just that...
The M has been relegated to my Mom, as the wife decided she wanted the iPhone 5...
Later buddy

Wow this is one impressive result mate.
I was thinking between MAXX HD and M (like the battery in MAXX HD and screen size in M) and this image convinced me to buy M.

True.... I averaged 3-3.5 hours of screen time and was lucky to get more than 12 hours on the M.

I could see making the jump (or just going straight there) if battery life were poor but I guess for me coming from HTC phones where the largest battery I ever had was 1620mAh I feel like battery life of the M is fantastic! The small size and form factor is far more important to me than HDMI out, internal storage, 720p screen or huge battery. Perhaps if they had made the Maxx HD more powerful/faster I'd be more intrigued but as is its just a bigger uglier version with huge battery.

Of course your milage may vary and I agree with your assessment of the M...
Coming from the Thunderbolt the M was fantastic and the battery life was awesome in comparison. But I found if I used heavy during the day and didn't top it off and I had to go out after work I was pushing the limits. The form factor of the M was great also, same size screen as the TB but better, lighter, and thinner.
The Maxx HD, while bigger and uglier than the M is the beast I was looking for. I was tired of having to carry extra batteries with the TB and having to be conscious of the battery on the M with heavy use. I was really tired of having to disable features to get a full day of use.
I plugged the Maxx HD in last night after 16 hours at 39% with almost 5.5 hours of screen time. On 4G all the time, no wifi use, pushing 2 email accounts, streaming some music, reading RSS feeds, some YouTube, and some web browsing... I can deal with the big and ugly.

Seriously if you're on your phone non stop then yes the battery will die. But the m has the best battery life I've seen in two years (as far as phones I've owned). I don't use smart actions, I have WiFi on at home, I have GPS on all day, auto brightness, and I get a day easy. If you don't get at least 15h then you're using your phone excessively.

I use my phone for work and average several hundred emails a day and i am on call 24/7/365 so yeah I am on my phone a LOT... I don't consider it excessive the way I use it. I am not playing Angry Birds or watching Netflix for hours at a time, but then usage I describe is what I do every day...
If you are happy with the M great, I am just adding perspective for heavy users that need a device to go the distance with out having to cut corners...

You use your phone too much
Then there is no alternative for you. MAXX HD is just perfect choice.
I use not more than 2.5h of display on my phone so I guess RAZR M should fulfill my daily needs.
I hate Motorola because of its "we are not unlocking our bootloaders" policy, but they make awesome phones.

For me, the Razr M is a good compromise between size and battery life.
I was tempted to get the Maxx because it was relatively thin, but still its too wide for me.
Although the M's battery life isn't as good, its still better than most phones out there. I get 20 hours on the M easily. That's more than enough for me.

Because receiving hundreds of emails a day on your phone and expecting a full days battery is realistic.

I was ready to ditch my M and go with the Maxx. I use about two hours of phone time a day, some email, text, browsing and I'm not near a charger for about 10 hours a day. My battery wouldn't get me through the day. I bought a morphie from Verizon.
After spending a lot of time monitoring the battery and searching the net for solutions, finally found my problem. I disabled google latitude updating my location and my battery life nearly doubled. With the phone just sitting off charger and very light usage, I'm seeing about 1.2%/hour. I don't even worry about my battery during the day anymore. On a typical day I'm well above 20% by the end of the day, usually in the 30-40% range as I recall. With two hours of phone time plus I'm in and out of signal areas and weak signals, I'm very happy with the phone's battery.

Your response doesn't make any sense, but I'm assuming you are trying to say it is UN-realistic... to which I will offer the following response:
No, it's because you have the audacity to tell someone else how much is too much.
Aside from that, you apparently have no understanding of what the RAZR MAXX HD is capable of in regards to battery life. Here is an excerpt from a previous post I made, after giving up on the HTC DNA:
"3) Lack of replaceable battery in the HTC DNA.
Now, before you bash me for getting the RAZR MAXX HD (which also doesn't have a removable battery), allow me to share the following:
With the RAZR MAXX HD, I now have a phone that actually gets me through an honest day without needing to be recharged. Heck, just this past weekend, I left my hotel in Orlando at 9AM and headed out for breakfast and then to the airport. At breakfast, I listened to music, surfed the web, and used Facebook using mobile data. Played some games on my phone during the 40 minute bus ride to the airport. Flight was delayed til 4PM while I was at the airport, and I watched some videos and streamed a full length movie on Netflix while waiting. During the flight, I kept the phone active because I was really curious how far the GPS could pick me up using the app GPS Status - - this was pretty cool to see that the plane leaves the ground at around 155 mph and it tracked me all the way to 530 mph at 29,000 feet and never lost the signal until I put it into airplane mode, at which time I watched another full length movie with the screen @ 100% brightness. Finished it off listening to some tunes on a set of around the ear Bose headphones until the plane landed. Made a few phone calls on my 45 minute ride from the airport to home, and upon my arrival in my driveway at around 8PM, I still had 40% battery left. NOW THAT IS A PHONE THAT CAN JUSTIFY NOT NEEDING A REMOVABLE BATTERY!! "

Had one for about 2 months now. I get about 24 hours of very heavy usage. Internet, numerous phone calls, texts, slingbox over 3G, and using power amp for hours on end will usually have me recharging after 24 hours. I could probably use it longer, but I hate to run my battery all the way down.

I have been considering an extended battery myself, but it seems all the higher quality brands (Japanese cells) are over $50. Not sure if I can justify such an expense over just having another regular battery to swap on the go.
If anyone finds a good deal on the brand name one, drop us a link.

Most extended batteries are like that.
Fortunately, most people who buy extended batteries don't care how it looks, don't buy custom cases to begin with, and don't care about thickness.
I need more battery life. Running Bionix 1.3 right now, and I'm constantly using my phone from about 6AM to 10PM every day with no time to charge it in between, and it's typically near the 5% mark by the end of the day, which I can't risk for too much longer.
Unless you are gaming just get an extra 1650 mah battery it is much more convenient. i had one but the weight and bulkiness was not worth to me. They do give a decent amount of use though.....

I have been very impressed with the battery life I've been getting on my Nexus. the talk time has been much higher than any phone I've owned. Here are a few screenshots of my battery life. These two days are pretty much my normal day (lol yeah I talk a lot on the phone).
The first post will be the day that about 50% of the time I was on wifi.
The 2nd post will be screenshots from a day of being connected to hsdpa for the entire day (no wifi at all).
My setup: I use push email, facebook sync, auto brightness, gps on, bluetooth on.
Also, when the phone first came I charged it completely then ran the battery down until the phone shut off. I then charged it completely without removing it from the charger.
Below is the day where I was connected to wifi about half the time:
These screenshots show the next day where I used no wifi at all and was connected to hsdpa the entire time.
I have had mine for 2 days, and I have to say it seems to have pretty good life as well, compared to my Atrix and Note. After reading about all the gripes here,
I was expecting the worst. This battery will more than get me through everything I need to do with it in my day, but I suppose it all depends on what you do with the phone.

Coming from a G2x with a terrible 10 hour battery life, anything I get out of this is freaking fantastic compared to it! I Just wish the devs start getting out some UVed kernels so I can make it longer through the day! I consider myself a heavy user/texter (girlfriend ) and so I'd like to get through the whole day (~18 hours) without a charge I must say, I got to 16 hours yesterday and I was really pleased with that, never had a stock rom last so long without any tweeks!

I typically average between 1-2 hours of screen time on an average day. But I talk A LOT each day lol. I'm impressed with the talk time because I've yet to see a phone besides this one that can go 6 hours of talk time in the real world when connected to hsdpa. Also, if you think about it, 1.5 hours of screen time is decent use. It's not a massive amount of use, but it's definitely not like it's getting no use. All in all I have been pleased with the battery life.
I don't know about you guys but im very disappointed in the battery life. With wifi turned on the entire day and no calls, just browsing and chatting on google talk, i got 3 hours 54 mins of screen on time before the phone reached 12% battery. I think thstss pretty horrendous. I was hoping for 7 hours or something of on screen time. My galaxy tab 10.1 has spoiled me i guess. Illl live with it because theres no other android phone im aware of that will give me more, but im kinda bummed about it.

Same here tbh. And the really frustrating part is, I only have 2G where I live so I was hoping to see really great battery life. Hasn't been the case so far though.
However having said that, just last night I flashed XXIK6 and while it's still very early to say for sure, it "appears" that battery life has significantly improved for me. Currently sitting on 91% after 3.5 hours with very, very light usage, IE: 15-20 mins screen on, 15 min phone calls, etc. Nothing to write home about sure, but way way better than before. It would normally be around 80% by now.
It's really sad when the very first thing you do after unlocking your phone is to go into setting to check your battery. Wish I could stop obsessing and enjoy this marvelous device without having to worry about it.
What did you guys do after getting the phone.
Did you charge it all the way to full before use, use and charge at the same time, or let it discharge all the way and then charge it to full?
Thanks.
I would have to say that the GN has the best battery life of any of my previous android phones. (G1, N1, Sensation) These things are very subjective though.

2-3% per hour idle
I did a benchmark this afternoon for about 8 hours.
ITL41F rom, rooted + dcm kernel, otherwise stock. bluetooth, HSDPA, 1 gmail sync, and a few background sync that is very light.
idle the phone in home for 8 hours. the battery drops about 2-2.5% per hour consistently.

I've become obsessed with the poor battery life on my new Galaxy Nexus and I've been pouring over forums, videos and blogs to find out why it's so bad.
I keep hearing about people getting 8 hours, 11 hours, 14 hours before their phone dies, but this is not actual use time, it's idle time (I.e "I left the phone off the charger overnight and..."). WHY does the manufacturer rate this phone as having a 15 day standby life... FIFTEEN DAYS!!!!
Something is terribly wrong here. If I can't use the browser for more than an hour without the battery getting critical, then what's the point of a "super phone "? It seems useless. I don't even want to install games on this device, because I know I'll get frustrated by it chewing through the battery as I play.
I purchased this phone with a high priority on the HD video recording capabilities, but will I actually be able to film stuff while out and have enough juice in case I need to make a call? Something tells me I won't.
Maybe I'm just expecting too much or maybe manufacturers should stop making these phones so "super" and focus on the fact that these are portable devices which need to last at least the day. God forbid you went for a hike and had an emergency, only to find your phone dead after eight hours!
Rant over
My battery is currently at 60% after 13 hours and and 1:35 screen time.
I have absolutely no complaints about the battery. In fact I would say its the best out of any phone I've owned.

That's because when you pull your phone off the charger and it says it's @100%, it's lying. It's somewhere in between 95-99%. The first 10% is spent figuring out where you're really at.

You can kindly replace "hike" with "family outing", "work", "movies", night club", "sporting event", "errands", etc... having a spare battery or charger (or a second communication device!) on you all the time should NOT be the solution to poor design (either hardware or software or both).

Lot's of misinformation in this thread.
A new Lithium-Ion battery (LiCoO2) is always 100% fully charged at 4.20 V (+- 0.05 V). This maximum voltage lowers with age and use of the cell. Both voltage and battery age can be precisely measured by your phone and translated into the battery % display. It's not a linear graph but it's not really rocket science either.
There is no calibration of LiIon cells, it's neither necessary nor possible, they work at 100% efficiency right from the start.

You can kindly replace "hike" with "family outing", "work", "movies", night club", "sporting event", "errands", etc... having a spare battery or charger (or a second communication device!) on you all the time should NOT be the solution to poor design (either hardware or software or both).

You going on some intense 12 hour night club runs?

My battery is currently at 60% after 13 hours and and 1:35 screen time.
I have absolutely no complaints about the battery. In fact I would say its the best out of any phone I've owned.

i'm at 24% after 12.5h, 1:45h screen time (inverted theme browser and some brief facebook/twitter time...). This, to me is not acceptable. If I was using google maps + gps, how long until the battery died? 30 minutes? Less?? I'm not watching video, making calls, downloading torrents, using the camera or anything else that would cause this kind of drain, but it seems to be "normal" for a lot of users on this and other forums.

Have to agree with most and say battery life is by far the best compared to all other Android phones I've owned. As for standby time, this is tested without a sim card, apps, etc. So 15 days sounds reasonable without touching it and without the phone doing anything in the background.
I disagree.
The battery life of this phone is fantastic, more than what I expected. It is better than the Nexus S that I have.
I am using extended battery 2000mAh for GSM version.
Battery drain during night is about 1%-2% for about 8 hours. No kidding, I was surprised with that this morning. Probably because the new 4.0.2. Before, it was half percent an hour.
My current record for battery life was 61 hours with 4 hours screen on time. See the attached screenshot.
Again, this is based on my usage pattern.

Battery life is amazing to me too, My average usage a day at work is 8-9 hours music, 45-60mins 3g web browsing, ~1h 40 mins screen on time.
On my Desire HD (Yea I know, hopeless battery life) the battery would die around 7-8 hours in with that usage. On my Galaxy Nexus I get home with 50% left.
One thing I found that helped battery life out a TON, is swiping facebook off the recent apps menu when you're done with it. Also have a similar high drain problem with joystiq/engadget apps.
Running AKOP17 with francokernel12 for anyone wondering.
I think you need to specify CDMA or GSM. It seems pretty common for GSM to get around 4 hours screen time before the battery goes. CDMA: 2.5 hours or so with moderate-heavy use.
I really hope someone on Verizon will post that they get 4 hours screen on time (no wifi) and what they did to get it.
Battery is good here too. Android OS is the eater. 4.0.3 and a good kernel fixes that.
The phone is capable of good battery but the new OS is still buggy.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - AOSP KANG
Asus Transformer - 3.2.1 OC/UV
Franco Kernel with a core powered down on screen offm 325 / 1200 clock.
Exiting / logging off google talk
Entering camera and force closing it one time after each reboot
LTE off
Nets me 1% drain per hour on 3g with nothing going on. That is excellent battery life. Loging out of Gtalk netted me approximately 2% an hour and the camera close trick netted me a crap ton. Prior to that I was getting almost 8% per hour loss doing nothing.
So I've done my searching around. I really want a definite answer. My HTC Droid Incredible has ****ty battery life, to put it nicely. I can manage AT MOST 2 hours screen on time with no wifi (this is because I have unlimited data with Verizon). Battery life is a big priority with me when it comes to phones.
For the LTE Galaxy Nexus, what's the most screen on time you can get with 4G? And how much longer can you get if you disable 4G?
Also, if you were a Droid Incredible owner, how do they compare?
The incredible was my previous phone and I actually thought the battery life was pretty decent. I can get between 2.5 - 3.5 hours of screen on time with my Nexus. I usually keep 4G disabled as I don't need a 20 meg connection to sync my Gmail. On 4G you will probable get the same screen on time as the Inc.

Are you using the regular battery or extended?
I get at least 11 hours if battery a day with 3-4 hours of screen time on the stock battery. The incredible got horrible battery compared to this phone. I usually only turn on mobile data when i use it and I'm always using LTE.

Good, when you first get it the battery is gonna suck, you're gonna wanna be using all the time, but once you get used to it you start doing battery saving stuff and it gets good.

I'd say without much tweaking the usual benchmark is 3hours screen on time.
YMMV

I just upgraded from the incredible. It's much better than the stock incredible battery (which quite frankly was unusable)... not as good as the seido extended battery I used for most of the time I had my incredible (that battery was actually overkill.. when new I would get almost 3 days.. lol)
I have no problems making it through the day with moderate usage (which I was not able to do on the stock incredible battery)
its funny with the extended battery i get around 10 hours, maybe 11 and the original battery is giving me around 13-14 hours, 3G on both, don't know what is going on.
yesterday i got about 7 hrs screen on, I'm unemployed at the moment, and i was playing ceramic destroyer for 3/4 of the time the rest was web surfing i still had 15% left. I'm on gummy latest using lous v3 kernel. i didn't get a screenshot but i was impressed. was on 4g the whole time. i don't really use 3g so i can't comment on that aspect. my old phone was an incredible as well. i would say they're pretty close but I'm much happier with the nexus

7 hours screen on...... jeez. That's amazing.
Yeah...if it sounds too good to be true...
My phone can burn 10-15% of battery juice an hour with heavy use. You could call that mostly screen on.

When i read my ebooks i can get 8 hours screen time. Black color, non cpu intensive, and after 1 hour its still at %90.
Theres a thread here where someone did screen tests, and they got 10 hours screen time on black, and 5 hours on white. So this phone is definitely capable.
Hey all,
I just upgraded to the HTC One after my RAZR M pissed me off for the last time. I bought the phone slightly used (about a month old) in perfect shape, and I gotta say, so far, I'm loving this phone! Everything from the screen to the UI to Sense is fantastic!
HOWEVER, the battery life is simply HORRIBLE! Mind you, I do use my phone quite a bit for actual phone calls (I'm a contractor, so I'm on the phone quite a bit), but on an average day, I'm down to 50-60% battery by noon...and my day starts at 9!
Is this normal?
It's just you. I can go 12 hrs and be 70% battery left. That's surfing the web and texts and so on. Download an app that will show you what's keeping your phone awake and not Dee sleep. I forgot the app name but I'm sure others can chime in.

Better battery stats is a good app to see what's eating your battery life. I've had a rogue app drain battery extremely fast.

Also check your screen brightness setting. Try not to have it at 100 percent.

It also really depends on the ROM. The stock ROM battery performance is a bit below average. On ViperOne I had amazing battery, but you will need to wait a few days as the ROM settles in. Tasker may help by disabling things like data and sync when the screen is off, but that kind of battery savings probably shouldn't be necessary just to get through the day.
