is there any way to get voice commands "navigate to" "map of" "call ..." "note to self" etc back? I don't use s-voice, Google now is turned off. the Google search doesn't seem to work. just brings up a web search of "navigate to Dragon Buffet" but not actually the navigate.

When you say Google now is turned off, are you saying you purposely turned it off.? Because that is your problem.
Anyway, I don't have any problems work Google now. I its working great.

I want Google search voice commands... but I turned off Google now because they weren't working with it on either, same results. but I hate the note cards and all that auto info stuff...
on the other jelly bean phones, you turn off Google now to get the grey box Google voice search and voice commands back. this Samsung... it still looks like the Google now search app... just no note cards. and voice commands not working with it either on or off.

I'm desperate for the old voice commands. This even with Google now on, map of doesn't map to the correct location, navigate to only goes if it find something, call command will only call if it's in my phone book already... the old one would auto search and call the closest whatever i said to call...
I realize google has Apple envy and tried to make their search like Siri, and I realize most people were too stupid to understand voice commands and want to try to just talk to their phone, but this new system is absolutely ridiculous. I was fine with the voice commands! Can someone please tell me how to get them back????
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Not trying to be a grammar Nazi or anything but the description of your problem doesn't really make sense. Your sentences run together and I can't understand what you're saying.
When you say old voice command, which one are you referring to?
I can say things like navigate to starbucks, call mom, listen to the beatles, launch tapatalk, and they all work fine.
But yes, call xyz will only work of xyz is in your contacts...but that has always been the case.
Edit: just tested voice dialing a phone number, works as well.
Also if you launch the app "voice search" you won't see google now, just the gray box.

can you walk me through your settings?? mine simply does not work. It's suppose to work like your description. I'm about to go flash a custom Rom as i think mine is just broken. I've tried all combinations of options i can think of under search, now, and location. but that's not the only thing mine doesn't seem to work with. mine won't text reflow in browser with double tap either.
the grey old version that worked beautifully on my old phone is the one I'm attaching. when i install old version of voice search app, it just crashes. i guess Samsung has integrated something it needs?
if you can explain your settings on the now voice search that works on yours, I'd be greatly appreciate. I'm incredibly frustrated with this. i love the note otherwise, but i didn't realize how dependent I'd become on the voice search. It's crippling the functionality severely for me.
otherwise, if someone can figure out how to get the old search working, that would work too.
thank you for your replies

I don't really know where to begin. my settings are stock, so my suggestion is just reset your settings to stock. I think clearing data for the app should accomplish that.
Have you never had google voice work right? Or did it stop working at some point?
Your ui is really different. I think I remember that ui from my old gingerbread phone.
Also noticed your Sig says sprint note 2 but your screenshots say Verizon, and the configuration of the status bar is different. Maybe you should start there?
swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2
sorry, I'm on a note 2. those pics are just from an internet image search to show what i meant by "old grey voice search" from different carriers and phones. the new voice search, which comes already on the note 2, has a white box, not gray, and is "incorporated"into Google now. for example, when you voice search for anything, it opens up a search app. the old search would open the search results in your browser. it does this wether or not Now is turned on or off in the settings. and commands, I've already explained how I'm having no luck with voice commands.
You say stock settings... I've tried the default settings and same story.
It's always been like this on this phone. it never worked, and it didn't stop working, it just never worked right like the old search did on other older phones.

Launch the app called "voice search" and you should get this
No, it's not the old box, and from my experience with cm10 on my tablet this is how all jellybean voice search works. The black box is gone. However, like you see web searches will show up in the same app as opposed to launching the browser. I personally like this more. When you click on a result, it will launch the browser.
So no, I don't think you can get the old version back. Although try your app manager and see if you have the option to uninstall updates.
As per the voice command, May I ask what country you're from, I've heard some countries have issues with it.
Also try these:

swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2
I'm in Ohio. this shot you posted is what i get, that's the new version of search.
if you click on a result, it opens the browser. Then if you switch apps, say to a text message, and switch back, then if you try to press back, the results list is gone. You have to search again. this is why i much prefer the search results to open in the browser.
the voice commands... i don't know what to do. i must just have a random screwed up unit

have you tried re-installing voice search and/or clearing it's data?
Yes. i even installed updates to Google search, tried it, reinstalled update, tried it, and same with voice search. It's doing what that site you posted, searching for "text to Bob" instead of composing a text.
I'm gonna root and try a rom. see if a new one fixes things. "map of" works about half the time, nothing else seems to work. plus it puts the map in a card, requiring an extra tap to get to the map app. i really hate those cards. the point of voice commands was not needing to interact and touch the screen to do something

unless your theory is true that everyone who owns a galaxy note ii is oblivious to how their voice command does not work and...also i have a super special version that actually does, i'm gonna go with the more likely scenario that yours is actually the exception, rather than the rule.
I'm sorry man, don't take it personally. voice commands being broken, I'm assuming it's just mine. It's unlikely that your account was disabled by mistake, though not altogether impossible as I know people who went through similar situation with their YouTube accounts (post Google). If your aim is to "harrase" them, just keep in mind that 1) they don't owe you an explanation or even a reply, and 2) the account and all the services associated with it belong to them and them only.
Be polite and good luck.
My account was disabled once due to suspicious activity, which was just that I was online from multiple different ip addresses, mobile, home, friends pc, public library, etc... They did it for my protection... Hope that helps, harassing them definitely won't.

Oh don't freak out, as someone else posted, it was more than likely due for your own protection. (If you did something bad, you'd know) which I don't think is the case here. When it happened to me, I ignored it for a day (24 hours) and was required to change my password due to suspicious activity. (I usually login all over the place so because I had never logged in at such unusual occassions, I got temp blocked. However, one of those logins must of been from an infected computer as when I logged back in, I noticed about 6 emails 'composed' by 'me' in blank to 6 random contacts with nothing but a notice from google saying that my malicious messages were blocked and taken care of. While it was an annoyance for a day of my life, I was quite flattered that they were able to take action to prevent harm to my contacts and still give me my account back. Just wait it out for a day, you aren't the first to of gone through this.

assuming you use the same internet for your laptop and PS3 and run it through a router, it should all show up as the same IP to google. Your phone, if not on WiFi, would be different. I would assume that your phone would be excluded from any ban triggers like this anyway, but who knows.
Wow, I hope you get this sorted out. Makes me a little afraid of Android now. Having everything on Google is certainly handy, but if something like this happens (even if it's a mix up), you're screwed.
This is actually kind scary. I hope it gets sorted out for you.

I second what Shinydude100 said. Now I don't use my google acct for email, my Yahoo! email is my main one. But I imagine the terms of service to be similar with both orgs. Anyway, I had some a$$h0le from my elementary school days hack my email (he and I did not get along FYI) and he sent out a bunch of viral emails to everyone on my contact list. AT&T Yahoo suspended my account for 24 hours, then they called me and told me my account was most likely hacked and had me change all the security info and the password. This jerkoff's gone after my email and facebook acct twice since then and so everytime I go to login and see my acct's suspended its probably because he's tried to hack my password and failed. That's probably what happened to you.

You're still under one single ip address.. the ip address your network provider assigns you is one single address. From there if you're setup with a wireless router, that then assigns ip addresses as well but those are local to you, those route back to your ISP's IP address.

Hi again, just a couple of features I have noticed missing, or not found them....
First is being able to long hold a contact and send business card etc,
And the other one is deleting individual calls from call history, either in batch or long pressing.
Any one else found some features you'd expect missing or if the ones above will be included in a software update?

Native 3G VIDEO CALL.- why we have a front camera where we cant use it for video call. Its not fair
WIFI-DIRECT- The most welcomed features. Thought its being the highend smart phone we already misses the 4.0 bluetooth which the board can support but atleast the WIFI capable direct transfer technology which most company including samsung incorporated even in GB phone and adding to these the white paper reveales that its has the technology in buit. But why its not implemented in the latest build.
Camera : Burst Mode. Many low end smartphones has that features. Why we dont have that feature. its really a pain that having spent on high end phone lacks basic functionality where a mediocre devices can perform the same functionality at a fraction of price.
I am not pin pointing or complaining. I am just esclating to the right department to notify that these core features which are missing in the XS.
Please take it as a feedback and do the needfull to the owners of XS.
Thanks
The use of wifi direct. Setting an external MP3 as a ringtone without the use of any apps or moving the MP3 to another location on the phone. In the contacts app, choosing to view only people with cellphone numbers (again, without using any other external app)

Yup yup, it's a bit daft we need to install Skype or something similar. I wish Google would follow suit like other manufacturers and OEMs, and bundle a native video calling app.
Also, a BBM type thing would be nice, preinstalled, so all Android phones come with it. Group chats and the like would be pretty awesome.

These instructions make no sense to me. There is no "Google Now", there is the search bar with the mic on the home screen, that brings up the search box with the "Now Cards". I assume that's what you are talking about?
But in the settings, there is no sub option "Google Now" there either. There are:

And there is no sync option in any of them, the top right hand has some dots that popup "Send feedback" and "Help".
In any case I have restarted the entire phone without success.

From what we can make out, your searches MUST be for teams both in the US and MUST be currently mid-season. I.e searching for Manchester United will give no results or cards, same as NBA team currently as its off season.
I had this problem because my account was through google apps and the predictive ui needed to be enable for mobile in the apps dashboard. If that is the case for you, try this solution another user found: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1744793&page=2

I haven't switched to Jelly Bean yet as I prefer the features in AOKP but had a question about Google Now.
Is the 'learning' it does tied to your Google Account or to your device?
i.e. I use my GNexus on the go but sometimes I'm going to be using my Xoom or my Nexus 7 I'm waiting for, will everything it's learned from being used on my GNexus be available on my 2 tabs? Also if the device is ever wiped does it have to relearn everything?
Just wondering. Looks like people love it so far.
Thanks!

Thanks!

As long as you're signed into Google, it will keep learning about your preferences, doesn't matter whether you're on a phone, tablet, or on the computer.
And no, Google won't forget your preferences even if you format the phone/tablet.

Fyi you may need to enable web search history in your Google account dashboard to get these teams to popup, that fixed the problem for me

Slowing down search?
When I have Google Now enabled I find that the time it takes to launch the search app is significantly longer than when Now is disabled from search. Has anyone found a way to speed it up? I use the search bar for everything like opening apps, web searches, etc and need to be able to launch it quickly on the go!! But I do like Google Now so want to continue to use it but not if it's slowing me down, man!
btw, running stock 4.1.1
Thanks for the help guys!
I know neither are perfect but when I give a local phone command like play music or a certain song S- Voice usually does it automatically. Google Now just always wants to search the web or make me scroll to a (tiny) button and choose what I want to do. Any tips to getting Google Now to "get a little smarter"?
I don't get Google Now yet. I mean I have it, I just don't "get it". The cards kinda put me off, so I haven't taken the time to explore what it really does for me.
I liked being able to press the search button (which my S3 doesn't have ) and Google Voice Search would pop up and I'd tell her (yeah, her) to do something and she would do it (usually).
Google Now seems a bit more complicated.
I've been using Google Now for a while now and I've found it to be very convenient. I love the fact that it will remind me when my favorite football (soccer) team plays a day before on the days I forget. It's pretty awesome IMO how it gives me an ETA for my commute to and from work without having to look up anything. It also does that for any place I look up (Store, Company, etc) with a shortcut to navigate. I was skeptical at first but it has found it's way to integrate into my everyday life.

I looked into it a little bit and I've come to the conclusion I don't lead an interesting enough life for Google Now to be useful. I (more often than not) know where stuff is around me, I have apps that tell me the weather and my teams' scores, and public transit is pretty consistent for me.
So there you go.
I can't really get the hang of either of them. Can either of them place phone calls or open apps?

There both agreviting. I mean try telling it to send a text message, damn thing just twist your words. It's making me think my spoken English was recently learnt through rosettastone. I end up arguing with it....

I use Voice Search (not Google Now) because the cards put me off.
Usually I'm looking to do something specific and I don't need a bunch of cards coming up.
I found that S-voice was less accurate and slower than Voice search for everything. VS will make calls, search, search phone, send texts...etc.
I hated on S-voice that it had to repeat back what it was doing....make sure that's what I wanted and then do it....the process took longer than VS by 3X.

Ditto here. I did find personalized recognition under settings so you can try that to see if it helps, and IIRC, you can choose the apps that it has access to.
I pretty much only use the (new offline) Google Voice search/commands, too, and ignore the Google Now cards, because they're not useful often enough in NYC. Weather and extreme weather alert cards are nice, but the subway and commute stuff doesn't really help me, and I don't give a sh1t about the new movie & sports cards.
Maybe more user-relevant cards from apps will show up in the future, though.
(Still, S-Voice sucks.)
The fact that google now doesnt have full control over the apps yet is the kicker. I think it will be able to do this and then it will be the king. But for asking google search type things its better than S voice, but S voice can control the apps....combine the abilities of the 2 with the speed of Google Now and it will be great.

Google voice is the best of both worlds...it has app control and it's fast on voice searching.
It's S-Voice without the annoying slowness and GNow without the stupid cards popping up.

Isn't part the problem that Google Now uses DIFFERENT commands to do things? (I just updated to the v7 version and I can set a time with the same prhasing as S Voice, but it actually sets an alarm for 10 minutes later vs S-Voice's bringing up the timer part of the clock.)
In S Voice you would say, "set a timer for ten minutes" and it brings up the stop watch and asks you to start it. (mine usually times out before I can say 'start')
In Google Now you say, 'set a reminder for ten minutes ' and it does set the alarm for the time.
What I LOVE is that Google Now can look at my calendar and where my next appt is and tell me (in advance) how long it's going to take to get there, reminding me to leave. This of course requires that you put the information into the location portion of your appts.
There's a set of 2 vids on Youtube with Google Now's 67 commands and search types.

Can someone explain me how Gnow works and what it can do never used it
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I never use neither of them.
I hate Google Now throwing all the sports thingy wasting my battery, memory, and data.. Though, S-voice don't spend any data, I feel like it's wasting battery and memory.
I'll use G-Now/S-Voice when phone can stay up for 3days with heavy usage
I know this is the wrong thread but I thought more peole would see it here.

Its working for me... does it not seem a bit clumsy in its implementation? You've got to switch back and forth between sms/hangouts. Two separate conversations. Not sure what I was expecting... but I dont think this was quite it.
I was reading that 4.4 would have both SMS and MMS in hangouts.
It's working for me very well. But still has some catching up to do even with the stock Galaxy s3 messaging app. Hangouts needs to be able to attach contacts or calendar or even a voice recording.

One contact = two conversations. One for sms messages, one for hangouts messages
I'm sorry to post a full newbie post here regarding this but I'm trying to settle some debate and confusion online about Hangouts 2.0
Basically has google "done it right" this time and copied iMessage? (No, I'm not an Apple fanboy)
The advantage of iMessage is that it defaults to data when possible, fallsback to SMS when it has to.
It's also completely seamless, this is handled for you - no need to manually change from data to SMS mode or anything.
2 more points:
iMessage allows you to SMS a "new" phone number for someone you've never encountered before, iMessage detects the phone number is "iMessage-able" and simply sends via data, no kind of handshake / friendship needs to be setup
and finally
There's no "online" status required of iMessage, you need not "log in" or always be set to online, it's an SMS app natively but you can communicate with people over data without them knowing you're necessarily "online"
The advantages as follows.
Cheapest possible was of conversing with friends (assuming your SMS plan is NOT unlimited, I'm in a country where it's pricey)
Privacy / "aloofness" - the lack of an online / offline requirement allows you to ignore a message and respond at your leisure, be it 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days. If someone however sees a green O next to your name with Hangouts, the social pressure / obligation to reply is there, you can't just relax if that makes sense (I guess this is an introvert feature)
Sorry for the long post but I'm hearing conflicting reports online that google STILL screwed it up - but that's from people who have obtained the Hangouts 2.0 APK file and do NOT have 4.4 KitKat, rumour has it that's required for the full backend SMS "engine" update to work like iMessage?
Thanks all, really appreciate your time.
EDIT: This also covers what I'm trying to clarify.
