HOW to mount usb OTG Portable Hard Drive to NOTE 2. - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

For the past few days I have been trying to mount my seagate 1tb portable usb 2.0 drive to galaxy note 2.
I even formatted the drive to fat 32 format to get it supported and tried different apps from play store. Flashed different roms too.
Now I am on omega version 8 the latest build but still I am not able to use my portable drive with otg cable.
Anyone have similar issue, share with me.
I think many have such issues.
Guys! Help me regarding this. I Googled for solution but didn't get one.
Please help me regarding this or find me a solution.
Thanks.

NOW WORKING. HAPPY
Mine is 1tb seagate converted to fat 32 and when I use usb otg helper app and others , it says not able to mount.
I tried 500 tb same drive and I am able to connect and mount using the app.
It's stored at sd card usb storage.
May be note 2 doesn't support 1tb.
Note I can open file and video directly using otg cable from my hard disk.
Finally working but 500gb. But happy.

There are 2 ways: one is to format the hard drive to fat32 filesystem, and the other is by downloading an app that lets your phone recognize NTFS file system. But before doing any of the above you have to make sure that the disks in your HD are spinning when connected to your phone. That way you know that its getting enough power.

wouldn't exFAT work better?
I have a small external ssd formatted as exFAT and it's immediately recognised without any mounting apps.

1 TB (USB 2.0 / 3.0) not mounting on Note 2
A simple question requiring a simple answer which probably noone except Dorji has been able to answer somewhat properly...
How can a 1 Terabyte External Hard Disk Drive be mounted on a note2, whether rooted or otherwise. And Bushako, please be specific in your replies. They are no much help !!

Here is what i did - It worked
I found this old thread (no help) so i worked it out and here is what i did.
I have a rooted Note 2, an Apacer OTG cable, a WD Elements 1TB NTFS USB 3 2.5" external HDD.
I installed USB OTG Helper app from play store (free)
I installed ES File Explorer
ran USB OTG Helper app, approved root access, mounted the drive
went to ES file explorer (this took a while to find) the drive is under /storage /UsbOtgDrives/drive_1
and there you go
Warning - it will suck your battery dry quite quickly, need to find a way to charge at the same time. Smart dock may be better for this.

Fire from my F86 Sabre with auto targetting system

I used to conect a samsung 160 gb external hard disk in my note 2 . but now it doesnt work,, its like the old android versions or kernels gave more voltage to the hard disk to work, new kernel and android doesnt make the external disk to work. Dont know why, dont know how to make the NOTE 2 to give more power to external disks.. i think there must be a voltage tuner or something inside kernel features. Any ideas??

Will someone please share the working mount path?

host usb and mass storage devices

I've read a lot of threads here showing interest in these topics, and to my mind, their incorporation into a ppc would take the devices to another level of functionality - laptop replacement for many users.
I am investigating using an xda2i with backpack, and using the Twinparadox Solar Express host usb CF card.
I know that wm2003 does not support mass storage devices, and my best bet is to use the DeJe MSD driver for wm2003
Where it gets interesting is that I recently emailed Twin Paradox, and although their website has been pretty inactive, I got a response by email with an intended release date of July 2005. This would be a different device from that shown on the web site, however. It would be a single host usb port on a CF card, usb 1.0 under wm 2003 but, under wm2005, it will be USB 2.0
so my question: Does anyone have any knowledge/ideas/hunches as to whether wm2005 will support MSDs?
cheers

Out of curiosity, what backpack expansion pack are you using? I am wondering what expansion packs are compatible with the Blue Angel. I read somewhere here that http://www.directmobileaccessories.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=930 this one is compatible with the BA even though it says xda II
Not bought it yet - trying to make sure that everything will play nicely with each other before spending loads of dosh. But I believe that there is just one model of backpack, which works for both the 2 and the 2i (Himalaya and Andes) I don't believe there is a backpack which will work with the Blue Angel (2s)
Certainly, I'm planning on using the Xda IIi Backpack - AHTXDAVN (for £89.99)

Yep, that's the idea.
From the twin paradox site, and through email, I'm pretty confident of getting the host usb up and running, when (and its a big when) they release the second generation card. (the website is woefully out of date, btw.) As far as I know, the first generation 2port card as shown on the website never saw the light of day.
Here's the information they give on the drivers supported by wm2003. I don't know if the SE goes any further?
The following USB Class drivers are now included in Windows Mobile 2003.
USB HID Class

Note: USB Hub support is part of the Windows CE.NET 4.2 operating system core.
WINDOWS MOBILE 2003 USB CLASS DRIVERS
USB HID (Human Interface Devices) Class – has robust support in the Windows CE.NET 4.2 O.S. This class driver supports a range of keyboards and mice from such companies as Logitech and Microsoft.
USB Printer Class – There is some level of support for printing within Windows CE.NET 4.2. SolarExpress PDA supports Printer Class devices, where an appropriate USB printer driver exists for the Windows Mobile 2003 environment. There are some printer drivers available under Windows CE.NET 4.2.
The figure below shows how Windows CE.NET 4.2 supports a USB Printer device.

USB Mass Storage Class – Windows CE.NET 4.2 supports FAT file format devices. USB Flash Hard drives and USB Hard drives support this type of file format. This class driver will support the majority of USB mass storage peripheral devices in the marketplace today. SolarExpress PDA currently supports only this type of file format.
Some specific examples of USB peripherals supported by SolarExpress PDA are:
Canon's USB BJC-85 printer
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/index1.jsp
Iogear's USB Hub
www.iogear.com
Iomega's USB bus powered Zip 100 drive
http://www.iomega.com/na/products/product_family.jsp
Maxtor's USB external hard drive
http://www.maxtor.com/en/products/external/onetouch/index.htm
Memory Experts' USB Flash Hard drives

Microsoft's USB Hub\Keyboard combo and Mouse
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/default.mspx
Olympus D-510 Zoom
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_digital_dseries.asp
The above list is not all inclusive as to the number of USB peripherals devices that SolarExpress PDA supports. It is merely to show that SolarExpress PDA supports the Windows Mobile 2003 USB class drivers.
USB DIGITAL STILL CAMERAS
USB Digital Still Cameras come in several types of protocols.
The two commonly used types are:
Mass Storage compliant – These are the Digital Still Camera protocols that are supported by SolarExpress PDA. (Olympus D- 500 Zoom series)
Still Image Class – This class uses Picture Transport Protocol (PTP) on top of Mass Storage to exchange data. PTP is similar to mass storage, but there are differences. SolarExpress does not support these types of Digital Still Cameras.

I'm painfully aware of the potential for incompatibility, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I bite the bullet and spend money! I hope if I can get a definitive list of the wm2003 drivers I can ask precise compatibility questions to the peripherals manufacturers (msds, keyboards et al.)
If anyone can direct me to a more definitive list of usb drivers under wm2003/ 2003se, I'd be grateful.

I'm guessing you're not rooted yet?
I already heard that USB storage doesn't recognize but that apps can pull it off if the device is rooted.
I have used my Sixaxis with GTA. I have also plugged my other phone in and was able to get adb shell to the other device (which also subsequently was charging as well). USB thumb drives work as well when used with StickMount (found in the market created by one of our own). USB hubs work, powers itself and worked with a USB keyboard, mouse, and the thumb drive.

Do you have the StickMount app?
As far as I understand that is one of them that is able to provide access to use storage.
You can also use the Wii controller, that works fine, is BT so it's wireless - you just need to install an app to get it working:

Edit: Sorry the wii controller works on both n64oid and gameboid, and im assuming every other emulator, you just have to go into Other settings and check the input method option.
Btw what emulators does the Sixaxis ps3 controller work with? The idea of bluetooth + dual analog sticks + awesome build design and a recognizable controller is worth $50 . Does it work with n64oid/gameboid and other emulators? How about just android games, shadowgun maybe?
Edit 2: Played Super smash bros with the wii controller, worked great. Played it with Zelda OoT .. was a f***ing nightmare; virtual controllers are better. (I attached the nunchuck for this game) The deadzone of the analog stick is ridiculous, and you can't use the B button on the controller at all because N64oid (and the other emus) register it as the "Back" button so you cant use your sword at all and all it does is bring up the stupid emulator menu every single time ... I tried remapping the button in the Wii IME app to no avail ... what a pain -.- I hope the PS3 sixaxis works better; it definitely looks better than the nunchuck/controller with the wire and everything ...
USB game controller support was introduced in 3.2 and should be carried over into ICS.
Best solution IMO is the Six axis app and wireless bluetooth. The new six axis app supports virtual screen presses to make it compatible with virtually all android games.

[Q] Galaxy nexus as USB mass storage

I'm using the galaxy nexus with AOKP and Franco.kernel. Is there a way to mount it as USB mass storage instead of MTP? I heard about a special kernel which has that option.
I also heard it's possible to connect other USB Sticks to the galaxy nexus like this. What kind of cable would I need to do that?
1) You'd need to partition the device into separate media storage to use UMS. Just use MTP, it's not as bad as you think (and better in ways you wouldn't think of).
2) USB OTG (On The Go).
How's it better?
The only reason I don't like it is because I can't use TeraCopy (copies files faster on Win7 or any Windows OS actually, great improvement over the stock) and I'm forced to use the Win Folder Explorer one. Its not too much of an issue, but copies over files significantly slower.

On OSX MTP doesn't work at all so having it as a mass storage device would be a lot better. Is there some kind of guide which shows how to do that?

Off the top of my head:
Less chances of data loss and corruption for those who do not unmount before removing the cable.
More consistent read/write times.
Ext4 vs. Fat32.
There are cons as well.

Some Linux apps may have native mtp support, but Linux as a whole does not.
Different distributions may include mtp support, but as a whole, GNU/Linux does not support mtp natively.

Well looks like there's a way to mount as MTP in OSX in the OS itself so supposedly it will act like USB mass storage did.
This is great news because I always used rsync on Mac to backup my phone and restore it keeping all the dates correct, etc.
I haven't tried but it seems you have to download and compile all the dependencies so it's not very straightforward but all the info is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643757
Go to Settings--->Storage--->Menu--->USB Computer Connection. USB Mass Storage might not be clickable so plug your phone into your computer and then click it. That should work.
As for the cable that allows other USB Devices to the phone, it's called a USB Host Cable. Micro USB Connector on one side and a USB 2.0 port. I have one. It cost like $3.

Use a different cable.
In my case, my win7 computer would crash every time I tried transferring files. It turned out it was the cord. I had been using an older microusb cord and for whatever reason it didn't like it.
Used a different/newer microusb cord and voila, it worked!

Use Droid NAS
If you are using OS X, you can mount your Android devices as NAS over the network by using Droid NAS from Play Store.
In that case, you do not need to plug your device into your Mac via USB, just open Droid NAS and it will appear in Finder.
The weak point is that the transfer speed is depended on your network connection if your WiFi network is fast enough it is fine.
However, you can also connect it through network via network over USB Debug Mode
but in this case using Android File Transfer from Android's website is better.
The truth is this kind of phones should have an improved MTP feature, emulating more or less old mass storage mode.
I think I'm running into the same problem as the OP but with my new truck (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2152702). My truck doesn't recognize that my phone is connected and won't allow my to play music from my phone through my stereo. Does anyone have a suggestion on what exactly I can do, special cable, MOD, kernel?

[APP] [S4 Only] [UPDATE: 9-14-13] UMS(Universal Mass Storage) Mode widget toggle

Hey guys, wrote a simple widget to toggle between UMS and MTP USB modes. Simply install apk, add widget, grant root, then profit.
ADB and all other functions still work, however, internal SD is not accessible. Will work on trying to have either MTP, UMS, or both (external SD as UMS, internal as MTP) options.
UPDATE: 9-14-13
- Now you can have the External mounted as UMS as well as MTP, and also have the internal mounted as MTP. Just keep tapping the widget till it says "MTP/UMS"
- Remembers what you had set after reboot, and applies it.
Don't forget that thanks button

Okay so i got both MTP mode and UMS mode working at the same time. Question for you guys, would you want the EXTERNAL sd card to be accessible via MTP while in this mode or no? Meaning, you will have your standard removable disk drive and the SGH-M919 > SD Card path accessibile, or would you want the SGH-M919 > SD Card path non accessible?
Both accessible for me!

Yea this is awesome! Haven't found too many apps/widgets that I like, but this thing has saved me in my car with bluetooth only alpine cde-133bt. Jacked my bluetooth settings trying update and usb mode is/was ios only compatible. Granted there is aux, but the audio quality between usb and bluetooth is noticeably better.
If only the was a way to clone the way ios is hosted by device. It can access playlists etc etc. Android can only access files and folders. But I can confirm that it works with a 64 GB card on both car stereo and ps3.
Thanks so much this works like a charm!!

okay i am on the international galaxy s4 running cyanogen mod and used to have the USB Mass Storage Enabler but your widget is amazing. I can listen to music on my SD Card and still be able to mount it on the computer not sure how you accomplished it.
What is not working is the combined UMS/MTP. Only the MTP portion of that works. The drive does not become visible.
anyway, good work! Just felt like leaving some feedback and thank you for your work
This is great. I need something like this for a looong time. Now I can finally use my phone as a flash drive for my xbox/ps3 again. it cant read the default usb settings and mttp
I guess I'm confused as to what he means in the op. With this widget set to ums/mtp, my internal AND external cards will show up on my pc? I don't see why anyone wouldn't want the option to access both, I guess...

I guess I'm confused as to what he means in the op. With this widget set to ums/mtp, my internal AND external cards will show up on my pc? I don't see why anyone wouldn't want the option to access both, I guess...

With ums/mtp mode, external is seen on your computer as a removable disk. While the internal sd card is seen as a media device.

Are the files/folders still accessible though, even though it's a media device?

Works great, nice tool. Thanx so much.
this is great. if the widget can be reduced to 1x1 it would be nice, and also the UMS/MTP mode is not correctly working for me... in this setting it works as MTP for both external card and internal storage. Any idea why is this happening?

[Q] Is 16gb enough?

I want to buy the Note. Been waiting for the kitkat update. Will 16gb be enough for on-device stuff like games and apps? Will games like modern combat save additional stuff to microsd. I plan on using a 64gb microsd.
No. Go with the 32. If you're tight on money order a used one from Amazon warehouse they can go as low as $356 for the 32gb.
I wish i went with 32gb. Will probably sell my 16gb and get a 32gb one

I'd say 32 GB as well. I have 32+64gb card fully using it. Would have gone with 128gb but they are too expensive atm.
A million times, thanks
You need more memory more than ever now that we're on KitKat. Apps can create and access their own files and folders on the external SD card but all other apps can't touch them because of new permissions Google introduced in 4.4. Samsung's apps (EG: Gallery, File Manager) have universal permissions which helps a little. The only way to get full external SD access is a to root.
Now, what price should I be looking for if I want to by used/refurbished.

I bought one 2 weeks ago on amazon warehouse and they sent me a first generation note 10.1. They would not send another stating they didn't have any in stock.
Kit Kat and SD Card
I upgraded my Galaxy 10.1 (2014 edition) which has 32 gigs. I found I had several apps installed on a micro sd card that worked with version 4.3 and still work with 4.4.2. Also I downloaded a couple of apps since then and I found I could move them to the micro sd card ant app seems to run as normal. Maybe before Samsung made 4.4.2 available they changed something to work from the card. If you have any apps in the main memory that you have downloaded see if they can be moved to sd card. Some can and some can't. Depends on the developer.

Try moving a file or creating a folder on the external SD card with a non-Samsung file manager. You can't. Even if you could, only the app that created the folder or file would have access to it. I used to sync files on my N3's external SD card with my home server using FolderSync and it worked flawlessly on 4.3. Once I updated to 4.4 FolderSync spits out error messages every time it tries to write a file to external storage. This has been an issue since KK first landed on a device with external storage (which was the Google Play Edition SGS4 in November). It is what it is and, without rooting to change access permissions, can't be changed and affects every device equally. Thankfully for those of us that can't or won't root, Samsung at least provided some of their key apps with universal read/write permissions.
Here's what the "My Documents" folder created by Hancom on my external SD actually translates to on my N3.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

And external storage appears just like normal within any app that's created files or folders there.
I think 32gb is much better.
I am using 16gb now. In my SD some data(lecturenotes, docs, ebooks) and 2 custom rom files. Even i have neither podcasts nor movies, but my SD have only 2gb space now. I think 32gb or higher capacity sd will be much better.
Never enough. I can't wait for 64 and 128 to become the standard.

The work-around to getting pretty much anything to external SD is Samsung's My Files. The challenge is moving huge files, that or moving a lot of files simultaneously that are collectively huge. There might not be enough free space on your internal storage to get the files on to your device. Here's a couple of ways of getting files directly to external storage. Like everyone else I'm not thrilled with the new external SD card restrictions but there are ways to accomplish pretty much anything. The only thing I haven't found a work around for is syncing. I ended up moving a bunch of apps and files to external storage so I could move my sync folders to internal storage.
You can setup a two-window instance of My Files and drag-and-drop content directly from Dropbox to External SD.
You can also use Samsung Link to transfer files from another Samsung device, a PC, or a cloud service (Dropbox, OneDrive, Box) directly to external storage. IMHO, Samsung Link is one of the most overlooked features Samsung provides. It's fantastic for managing and viewing files across devices. For example, I can take a picture with my Gear which transfers it to my N3. I can view, edit, and share the pic from my N10.1-14 or PC seconds later. Anyway, here's a screen shot of it.
