I've read a lot of threads here showing interest in these topics, and to my mind, their incorporation into a ppc would take the devices to another level of functionality - laptop replacement for many users.
I am investigating using an xda2i with backpack, and using the Twinparadox Solar Express host usb CF card.
I know that wm2003 does not support mass storage devices, and my best bet is to use the DeJe MSD driver for wm2003
Where it gets interesting is that I recently emailed Twin Paradox, and although their website has been pretty inactive, I got a response by email with an intended release date of July 2005. This would be a different device from that shown on the web site, however. It would be a single host usb port on a CF card, usb 1.0 under wm 2003 but, under wm2005, it will be USB 2.0
so my question: Does anyone have any knowledge/ideas/hunches as to whether wm2005 will support MSDs?
cheers

Out of curiosity, what backpack expansion pack are you using? I am wondering what expansion packs are compatible with the Blue Angel. I read somewhere here that http://www.directmobileaccessories.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=930 this one is compatible with the BA even though it says xda II
Not bought it yet - trying to make sure that everything will play nicely with each other before spending loads of dosh. But I believe that there is just one model of backpack, which works for both the 2 and the 2i (Himalaya and Andes) I don't believe there is a backpack which will work with the Blue Angel (2s)
Certainly, I'm planning on using the Xda IIi Backpack - AHTXDAVN (for £89.99)

Yep, that's the idea.
From the twin paradox site, and through email, I'm pretty confident of getting the host usb up and running, when (and its a big when) they release the second generation card. (the website is woefully out of date, btw.) As far as I know, the first generation 2port card as shown on the website never saw the light of day.
Here's the information they give on the drivers supported by wm2003. I don't know if the SE goes any further?
The following USB Class drivers are now included in Windows Mobile 2003.
USB HID Class
USB HID class driver
usbhid.dll
Windows CE.NET 4.2

USB Printer Class
USB Printer class driver
usbprn.dll
Windows CE.NET 4.2
(Supports)
USB Storage Class
USB Mass Storage class driver
usbmsc.dll
Windows CE.NET 4.2
(Supports)
Note: USB Hub support is part of the Windows CE.NET 4.2 operating system core.
WINDOWS MOBILE 2003 USB CLASS DRIVERS
USB HID (Human Interface Devices) Class – has robust support in the Windows CE.NET 4.2 O.S. This class driver supports a range of keyboards and mice from such companies as Logitech and Microsoft.
USB Printer Class – There is some level of support for printing within Windows CE.NET 4.2. SolarExpress PDA supports Printer Class devices, where an appropriate USB printer driver exists for the Windows Mobile 2003 environment. There are some printer drivers available under Windows CE.NET 4.2.
The figure below shows how Windows CE.NET 4.2 supports a USB Printer device.

USB Mass Storage Class – Windows CE.NET 4.2 supports FAT file format devices. USB Flash Hard drives and USB Hard drives support this type of file format. This class driver will support the majority of USB mass storage peripheral devices in the marketplace today. SolarExpress PDA currently supports only this type of file format.
Some specific examples of USB peripherals supported by SolarExpress PDA are:
Canon's USB BJC-85 printer
http://www.usa.canon.com/html/index1.jsp
Iogear's USB Hub
www.iogear.com
Iomega's USB bus powered Zip 100 drive
http://www.iomega.com/na/products/product_family.jsp
Maxtor's USB external hard drive
http://www.maxtor.com/en/products/external/onetouch/index.htm
Memory Experts' USB Flash Hard drives
www.clipdrive.com
Microsoft's USB Hub\Keyboard combo and Mouse
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/default.mspx
Olympus D-510 Zoom
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_digital_dseries.asp
The above list is not all inclusive as to the number of USB peripherals devices that SolarExpress PDA supports. It is merely to show that SolarExpress PDA supports the Windows Mobile 2003 USB class drivers.
USB DIGITAL STILL CAMERAS
USB Digital Still Cameras come in several types of protocols.
The two commonly used types are:
Mass Storage compliant – These are the Digital Still Camera protocols that are supported by SolarExpress PDA. (Olympus D- 500 Zoom series)
Still Image Class – This class uses Picture Transport Protocol (PTP) on top of Mass Storage to exchange data. PTP is similar to mass storage, but there are differences. SolarExpress does not support these types of Digital Still Cameras.

I'm painfully aware of the potential for incompatibility, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I bite the bullet and spend money! I hope if I can get a definitive list of the wm2003 drivers I can ask precise compatibility questions to the peripherals manufacturers (msds, keyboards et al.)
If anyone can direct me to a more definitive list of usb drivers under wm2003/ 2003se, I'd be grateful.

Ok, I am not sure if this was discussed before but I found this registry hack for the Zune which enables you to use it as a external drive and I got it to work with the kin as well. This requires the Zune software.
NOTE: If Controlset002 does not work, try ControlSet001 or CurrentControlSet
* Make sure your Kin is not plugged in and your Zune software isn’t running
* Open up Regedit by going to the start menu and selecting “run”. Type regedt32 and hit “OK”
* Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet002\Enum\USB\
* Search for “PortableDeviceNameSpace”. This should be contained in the Vid_####&Pid_####\########_-_########_-_########_-_########\Device Parameters within the above …\USB\ The ##’s listed here will be numbers and letters specific to your Kin.
* Change the following values:
o EnableLegacySupport to 1
o PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell to 0
o ShowInShell to 1
* Plug in your Kin, and make sure the Zune Software starts up.
* Hopefully at this point you can open up “My Computer” and browse your device, though it does NOT show up as a drive letter.
I am not sure if this helps at all but hopefully it is something to work with.
Doesn't let you use it as external HDD. It only allows you to see some files on your kin, but doesn't allow you to read/write to them.
Syncing
You should have access to the files while Zune is transfering files. If you are syncing, it unlocks the drive and allows you to access the files.
After doing this, it technically should be possible to reverse engineer the Zune software and recreate the "unlocking" feature in another piece of software.

I tried this. While synching it removes the "Storage" drive from KIN. So I cannot access the drive. And after the sync it is still not present. I have to reconnect my KIN to my computer to see that drive again.
Here's KIN with access to that drive (Before sync):

Conclusion... either this doesn't work for me, or i haven't received enough information to execute this.
Nope. The zune software has some kind of protection and operates in a bit weird way (cause DRM protection).
On the other hand, reverse engineering the unlocking procedure *could* be done easier on the mac software, if you can sniff the usb from a windows host, executing a virtualized osx machine.
My current CPU hardware has no virtualization support, so i cannot do that even having legal windows and mac disks. (no vmware support for intal Mac OS's without that)
The cheapest crappiest phone is the most secure. Makes one wonder doesn't it.
Just the DRM used (Janus) on the windows Zune is secure. The Osx software doesnt relay / support DRM, so it's almost doable if you got virtualization support (not my case).
The device software itself it's not so secure (although presents some pain in the ass troubles).

Installing OSX in virtual box now..
Well, apart from that (if you manage to get it to work), you would need:
- Sync software from markspace (link posted on this forums)
- Usb sniffer. Usblyzer will suffit, commercial software with 30d trial.
As virtual OS will take the device itself, you must set the usb sniffer to capture the USB bus and not the device. You can see what bus is plugging it on the windows host and the capture software opened as it should show "Kin" there, so check its parent bus instead the kin device.
You should start capturing before opening the sync software and let it enable the "Connected" window at the kin, close the sync software and when kin is back on normal state, stop the capture. Then you can save the captured log and so on.
Several times will provide better results, so you can check what changes (if anything does).
Of course, you must have the legal right on your country and yak yak yak...
Note (importantly) this two things:
- This (if ever done) will only unlock MPM (or MPMz) protocol, so just storage access to read/write multimedia files.
- I have bricked my phone so i cannot test, write or anything in this mode, hence i dont give a ##### about the logs captured, unless i am able to recover the normal kin boot. In that last case, i got a c++ program to send the captured logs again to the kin without mac/win software ....
Those you that know about hacking phones that have bricked their phones if there is something safe those of us that still have working phones can attempt please let us know so we can help.

if you guys are having problems with the drm headers i think there is software out there that removes them.

when you can plug in other usb devices into the desire z and use the desire z to manage those usb devices.
Count me in the brigade who would love to know if the Vision/G2/Desire Z can in fact do USB Host--I know the feature was supposedly introduced in the 2.3.4 builds CyanogenMod is based on, but it'd be interesting to know if the Vision can do it
(And as others have noted--USB Host is basically where you can plug in a "USB client" device (like a USB hub or mouse or whatever) into the Android and have the Android control said device--just the same as if you plugged it into a regular computer such as a PC or a Macintosh or Linux box.)
(Right now, Androids can be "USB Clients"--that's how plugging in your Android to a PC and turning USB storage on makes your PC think the Android is a hard drive. Theoretically, with USB Host you could plug an Android into another Android and set up a similar connection, among other things.)
(In my case, this is of Rather High Interest because--if an Android phone CAN do USB Host (at least running higher versions of Gingerbread)...this opens up a world of possibilities in regards to amateur radio applications. In particular, at least one SDR radio combination with its own integral sound-card and capability for USB control could be VERY usable; this also opens up things a lot for folks using computer keyers, PSK31, and the like. Yes, if USB Host is possible...it could be possible for a G2 to be essentially a Morse Code keyboard or even a full control dock for radios.
(This also opens up some real possibilities for scanner radio control; in the Bad Old Days of PalmOS and Windows Mobile, there were tools for programming and controlling Uniden scanner radios using the serial port interfaces and adapters to a conventional RS232 serial connector. Most of those radios--and most smartphones and palmtops--have long ago abandoned serial connections for straight USB, and I'll admit that IS one of the VERY few things I do still miss from PalmOS and WinMo phones.)
This is cool. So how is the news regarding this?

Want to let you know that, as my first android development project, I'm going to try this. It shouldn't be very difficult, but I can't promise you anyhing. So don't read this like, we'll have usb host on dz, more like someone will try to port it. Now I'm trying to set up everything, I haven't been using Linux for much time, so, if there's anything I'll let you know in a week or so. This doesn't mean usb host in a week .
Anyway it's not yet possible to have a kernel both host and client.
All we need is 3.1 to be able to acceess android.hardware.usb...
In client accessory mode back-ported to 2.3.4 (my current version) you have to power the usb bus so no good for what i want...
I've seen some roms with 3.0 but none with 3.1 - am I wrong?
If anyone finds a 3.1 rom for g2/dz please PM me :-/

On 18/10/2011 we'll have at least some infos about ice cream sandwich, I think we'll have usb host in it, mostly because it will unify phones and tablets, but it may need to be implemented specifically for every phone. So let's wait some week till we see the first cyanos, or every other rom featuring 2.4 (4.0)
hi, is there any update on that?
actualy im using cyanogenmod 7 (android 2.3.7 - kernel 2.6.35.14) on my desire z..
ordered that "Micro-B USB HOST OTG Cable" from amazon and had the same in mind like oVeRdOsE with the thumb-drive connected to that samsung phone..
but when i hook up the cable (without any devices attached) some car-mode/app starts...
ive had a look in dmesg but i cant see a drive(-definition) there, just some messages about some car-kit plugged in.
(dmesg doesnt output anything when i connect some device to the cable)
isnt it possible like under linux to add usb-host to kernel-configuration and recompile?
somewhere on another forum ive read that this shall be possible with icecream? but on another site ive read that is only available for tablets?
there are even apks (for other phones) which allow usb-host control but when i tried them on my desire z the market-app told me that isnt compatible with my phone ?!
edit: see Nexus One USB host mode driver
and there are even nice videos on youtube:
USB host mode on the HTC Desire
Nexus One USB host mode
pity i didnt manage to boot the kernel, the dz hangs at boot with the htc logo - tried android/cyanogenmod kernels from github with the config from my actual running kernel
i didnt figure out where to get the kernel-bootlog output to see an error and know whats wrong ..
bump , would love to see this happen!

I'm using the galaxy nexus with AOKP and Franco.kernel. Is there a way to mount it as USB mass storage instead of MTP? I heard about a special kernel which has that option.
I also heard it's possible to connect other USB Sticks to the galaxy nexus like this. What kind of cable would I need to do that?
1) You'd need to partition the device into separate media storage to use UMS. Just use MTP, it's not as bad as you think (and better in ways you wouldn't think of).
2) USB OTG (On The Go).
How's it better?
The only reason I don't like it is because I can't use TeraCopy (copies files faster on Win7 or any Windows OS actually, great improvement over the stock) and I'm forced to use the Win Folder Explorer one. Its not too much of an issue, but copies over files significantly slower.

Off the top of my head:
Less chances of data loss and corruption for those who do not unmount before removing the cable.
More consistent read/write times.
Ext4 vs. Fat32.
There are cons as well.

Well looks like there's a way to mount as MTP in OSX in the OS itself so supposedly it will act like USB mass storage did.
This is great news because I always used rsync on Mac to backup my phone and restore it keeping all the dates correct, etc.
I haven't tried but it seems you have to download and compile all the dependencies so it's not very straightforward but all the info is here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1643757
Go to Settings--->Storage--->Menu--->USB Computer Connection. USB Mass Storage might not be clickable so plug your phone into your computer and then click it. That should work.
As for the cable that allows other USB Devices to the phone, it's called a USB Host Cable. Micro USB Connector on one side and a USB 2.0 port. I have one. It cost like $3.

Use a different cable.
In my case, my win7 computer would crash every time I tried transferring files. It turned out it was the cord. I had been using an older microusb cord and for whatever reason it didn't like it.
Used a different/newer microusb cord and voila, it worked!

Use Droid NAS
If you are using OS X, you can mount your Android devices as NAS over the network by using Droid NAS from Play Store.
In that case, you do not need to plug your device into your Mac via USB, just open Droid NAS and it will appear in Finder.
The weak point is that the transfer speed is depended on your network connection if your WiFi network is fast enough it is fine.
However, you can also connect it through network via network over USB Debug Mode
but in this case using Android File Transfer from Android's website is better.
The truth is this kind of phones should have an improved MTP feature, emulating more or less old mass storage mode.
I think I'm running into the same problem as the OP but with my new truck (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2152702). My truck doesn't recognize that my phone is connected and won't allow my to play music from my phone through my stereo. Does anyone have a suggestion on what exactly I can do, special cable, MOD, kernel?
Ok, please bare with me and I will try to explain this as short as possible.
------- Introduction --------------------------------------------------------
This is not the full USB mass storage mode concept. It's just an idea to upgrade the current process of making WP7 visible as USB storage device in Windows.
As a base of my thaught, I used the very well known registry edit to make WP7 visible in Win.
More here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069568
------- The Concept --------------------------------------------------------
The next thing i thaught was: "What if there was an app for WP7 that could edit those registry values upon connecting to the PC?"
I guess it would have to act as some sort of "on device driver" that intercepts Zune drivers from starting Zune and syncing process?
Ofcourse, if this was to be acomplished, you still wouldn't be able to transfer music or pictures from PC-Zune on to WP-Zune, but you would be able to use your device on any PC (regardless of Zune being installed or not) as a USB flash drive.
------- How it works? --------------------------------------------------------
1. An "app" that will contain registry values to be edited on PC is deployed on WP
2. Upon connection, app will intercept Zune from starting and add those values to the PC
3. PC establishes basic USB connection with WP
I understand that there are drivers that Zune installs so it could Sync up and reckognize WP, but would it be possible to transfer those drivers too on the device so the "app" would contain everything it needs to establish only Basic USB connection?
------- Non-related to concept --------------------------------------------------------
I hope you understood me... If you ask me, this sounds like a space invadors concept I am not a programmer (at least not in this field of programming), so don't ask me for technical explanations please.
I use the opportunity to once more give thumbs up for all of the devs who are working on magical things to make WP7 even more wonderful experience! Thumbs up and thanks for all the efforts!!!
Feel free to comment and give your ideas!
Who knows, maybe we'll get to something here...
Cheers!
This is a great work.I try make it ,but I failed.
The so-called "USB Mass Storage" hack for WP7 (or any other Zune device) is... misleading. It's just exposing the MTPZ (Media Transfer Protocol, Zune) device within Windows Explorer. You still need Zune (normal MTP only requires Windows Media Player, but MTPZ requires Zune and that's what WP7 uses). You also can't access the phone as an actual UMS device; if you could, you could browse its real filesystem, rather than the virtualized media folders (and nothing else).

Thanks for the info GoodDayToDie!
The idea of automatically enabling the switch is still valid, don't get me wrong. It's just that it won't work on a computer without the required drivers (that Zune installs) and it won't work as an actual UMS device (for example, you can't mount it at a drive letter).
No no, please, I don't feel offended in any kind of way
You have extremely valid arguments (and of course the knowledge!) and I'm not trying to confront you in any way. Just giving suggestions!
As for the driver, I thought there might be a way to get it on the WP and upon connection the PC installs drivers from the WP itself and not from the Internet...
Why did you post it there?
Well I was thinking of it as a potential hack, so that's the reason. If it's not where it was supposed to be, then please move the topic, and I'm sorry for making a mess.
Cheers!

Actually the full system wide explorer of a wp7 can be realized on pc using schaps' touchXperience-WPdevice manager combo..but of course WPdevicemanager needs wp SDK to be installed..AFAIK WPDM works with mini-SDK also..so it shouldnt matter..howzaat??

You need Zune and it's drivers one way or another.

Or a simple OS change and you're good to go without Zune, SDK or any aditional software...
For the past few days I have been trying to mount my seagate 1tb portable usb 2.0 drive to galaxy note 2.
I even formatted the drive to fat 32 format to get it supported and tried different apps from play store. Flashed different roms too.
Now I am on omega version 8 the latest build but still I am not able to use my portable drive with otg cable.
Anyone have similar issue, share with me.
I think many have such issues.
Guys! Help me regarding this. I Googled for solution but didn't get one.
Please help me regarding this or find me a solution.
Thanks.

NOW WORKING. HAPPY
Mine is 1tb seagate converted to fat 32 and when I use usb otg helper app and others , it says not able to mount.
I tried 500 tb same drive and I am able to connect and mount using the app.
It's stored at sd card usb storage.
May be note 2 doesn't support 1tb.
Note I can open file and video directly using otg cable from my hard disk.
Finally working but 500gb. But happy.

There are 2 ways: one is to format the hard drive to fat32 filesystem, and the other is by downloading an app that lets your phone recognize NTFS file system. But before doing any of the above you have to make sure that the disks in your HD are spinning when connected to your phone. That way you know that its getting enough power.
wouldn't exFAT work better?
I have a small external ssd formatted as exFAT and it's immediately recognised without any mounting apps.
1 TB (USB 2.0 / 3.0) not mounting on Note 2
A simple question requiring a simple answer which probably noone except Dorji has been able to answer somewhat properly...
How can a 1 Terabyte External Hard Disk Drive be mounted on a note2, whether rooted or otherwise. And Bushako, please be specific in your replies. They are no much help !!
Here is what i did - It worked
I found this old thread (no help) so i worked it out and here is what i did.
I have a rooted Note 2, an Apacer OTG cable, a WD Elements 1TB NTFS USB 3 2.5" external HDD.
I installed USB OTG Helper app from play store (free)
I installed ES File Explorer
ran USB OTG Helper app, approved root access, mounted the drive
went to ES file explorer (this took a while to find) the drive is under /storage /UsbOtgDrives/drive_1
and there you go
Warning - it will suck your battery dry quite quickly, need to find a way to charge at the same time. Smart dock may be better for this.
Hi,
Here is what I personally use to connect my Seagate 1 TB expansion.

Fire from my F86 Sabre with auto targetting system
I used to conect a samsung 160 gb external hard disk in my note 2 . but now it doesnt work,, its like the old android versions or kernels gave more voltage to the hard disk to work, new kernel and android doesnt make the external disk to work. Dont know why, dont know how to make the NOTE 2 to give more power to external disks.. i think there must be a voltage tuner or something inside kernel features. Any ideas??
Will someone please share the working mount path?
