I just got the SGSII today & I love it and all but when I try to go on the Internet or use an app that requires a data connection, the connection never goes through (I have unlimited data plan), whereas when I use my Wi-Fi, I have no problems. What should I do?
You may need to enter your carriers apn settings manually. Should be under your data settings called Access Point Names, hit menu and hit add new. You should be able to get the settings from the carriers website that you need to input.
Also make sure data is enabled (you never know )

I just bought the Defy for my younger sister and was just wondering if there is a way to turn off the data since I only want her on wi-fi. I know there's apps out there like extended control but is there anything I can change in the settings? I did some searching but found nothing on the forum if I missed it can you guys point me the right direction? Thanks a bunch!
When in Europe I use an app called APNdroid from the market. It kills edge & 3G but leaves wifi and voice/text running. If you want to kill EVERYTHING but wifi, hit airplane mode then wifi.
I suppose it depends on your service provider, but if you set up nonsense information in your APN (i.e. it can't find a server) then it won't be able to access 3G data. I've set up 2 APNs on my phone, one to allow and one to turn it 'off'. Works like a charm.
Well, for me, anyhow.
+1 for APN renaming.

Go to market, find this--> APNdroid
Install it & put on desktop.
This will help stop the Defy from using GPRS.
Edmond.

Yeah I looked for that too but didn't find it so I'm just using the app. Thanks for all the help!
You can use the app"Droidwall",you can disable 2G,3G, and use only WIFI
You can try a battery saving app called "juicedefender".
The original function of it is turning off data when the screen is off, but you can use its widget to turn off data completely.
I hope I'm posting this in the proper category.
Namely, I'll be leaving my home country very soon and travel abroad and I will most certainly need to occasionally do SSH connection to my server over 3G, which leads me to data roaming. Now, data roaming at my carrier is super expensive, so I was wondering if there is a way to completely disable data while in roaming, but still be able to connect to 3G and EDGE when I explicitly tell the phone to do so (eg. for SSHing somewhere or checking in on Foursquare, refreshing Twitter timeline, etc).
I saw that there's an option to uncheck Data Roaming in Wireless & Network settings, but I would say that will completely turn off all data connections and NOT allow me to manually and explicitly initiate data connections. Is that true? Is there a way to make it connect to 3G only when I explicitly tell it to while remaining disconnected otherwise?
Allow all phone data settings on. Download APNdroid or similar (APN on off widget) from the market. Open app and set any preferences, then add widget to home screen. Activate by tapping on off on (or something like that). Green on, red off.
All it does is rename the APN settings so it "fails" to connect.

Your quite correct in that it will stop data connections, but why not turn it back on when you want to connect?, the other possibly cheaper option would be to, as long as your phone is not networked locked, buy a local PAYG sim with data and use that in your phone when you want to use 3G
Buying local sim would be wise option....

A local prepaid SIM is a good idea, far cheaper than using data roaming.
Additionally, to avoid background data usage, you might want to install Droidwall and allow only the SSH app to connect to the internet.

Because I want only that one application to use the data connection when I want it to, without all other apps opening their own connections for sync and other stuff, since I have a lot of apps and accounts that sync in certain periods of time (this is an Android device, after all ).

Exactly what I needed! Many thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it out!
Hi,
Have flashed CM7 rc1.5 over my stock sbf = no problems except no data connection and android process media force closing repeatedly tried all settings I could think of , ( including Baseband switcher).
Had no joy so flashed ( via rsd lite) the recommended 3.4.2-179-2 CEE DEBLUR sbf and data worked again . Put CM7 back on and got exactly same 2 problems .
Been trying loads of different settings all day and media force close issue has disappeared by luck I think .
But main issue is still no data - phone status shows " mobile network type hspa",
but "mobile network state disconnected"
Really hope for a fix as it's a sickening thought to go back to 2.2
Thanks for any thoughts.
Same issue. I could not turn on data (no arrows in the taskbar). Tried clear caches, factory reset it helped for a while. But now i have the similar issue (arrows are in the taskbar, but they don't go green).
Baseband switcher?
Tried baseband switcher (pretty much every alternative) , but still no connection at all.
try harder. It should be a baseband problem really.
Also check if the access point configured correctly.
did you also try network operators? if your carrier appears more than once, pick the top one.
Go to settings then wireless and network then mobile networks then accesses points click menu key the first one on the bottom of your phone..and select restore to defaults...after that choose your access point...
go back and see if data enable checkbox is checked..
It should work now
If not then open the access point you selected and scroll down to APN type ..open it and type default, supl in it
Also try default, supl, dun if the above doesn't work..
After you do this data should connect

BINGO -
Had to type the settings in manually as supplied on Talkmobile website , some were there already but were for pay and go account whereas I'm on a contract .
Thanks very much for the help / replies really appreciated.
Now to put CM7 through some everyday use and see just how superior it is to stock -looking very at the moment. : )

I've gone through these steps but I can't open "access point" to get to the AP type. Don't see howto do that. I have APN on screen but can't open it.
Just click on the apn..
Like open settings.. Mobile and network.. Mobile network (bottom most).. Access point.. Now you should see a list of 1-3 access points.. Just touch any of them.. It will open

Theres one thing thats tripped me up in the past, and thats disabling 3G, as my network doesnt offer 2G at all.
I updated my phone to Jedi Jelly.. However after the install, i cannot add my google account as it forces me to use wifi, and no wifi service availble
My plan through telus has lots of data, is there a way to add google account without being forced to use wifi only?
Could be but not that I know of unless you can do it using gmail account somewhere on the web

I need to sync my phone with my google account, so I don't know how the web would help with that.
I am trying to go to setting > add account > google.. then it asks me new or existing, I select existing then it goes to wifi page and says scanning... the next arrow is grey out, as there is no active wifi for me to select
You should not need WiFi to add an account. Can you use the web browser with WiFi off?
Do you have a normal data connection? I'm not familiar with the specific ROM you're using, but It's usually designated by a letter appearing near your signal meter on the top right side. If you're not getting any data connection at all, you may want to try updating/changing your radio.

Did you check the radio to match your service provider (see above posts)
Yes you can
Before you go ahead to try to add the gmail account to your android, please confirm and make sure your Data connection is on. Most of my clients with the problem had not realized that the data connection of their phones was off. Hope it helps
Also, make sure you have the APN correctly configured, or that you have an APN active to begin with. You can check this in the Settings>Mobile Network>Acces Point Names
If there is nothing checked there, you need to configure APN's, a quick google can help you with your network APN
it should be normal to use either wifi or local connection using (sim card) to log in or downloading in PlayStore. Just make sure your access points are correct so that when connecting there will be no problem.
I'm running Paranoid Android on a rooted Galaxy Note 2 and I've run into a weird problem. My mobile data won't work -- the system menu shows it as being on, but I show no actual internet connection. Simple reboots haven't worked; the only way I've been able to resolve is by doing a full restore via TWRP.
The trigger seems to be when I go to certain locations -- like the downtown area of my city, where I'm on an LTE connection. It doesn't happen when I'm on the 3g network near my house, for instance. However, once the mobile data goes down, it won't come back no matter where I am until I restore. Anybody with a similar experience, or a suggestion? I'm at a loss.
Check APN settings to ensure that you only have one listed.. Then edit the "APN type" field and change it to this..
default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet
Make sure to select menu key - save or it won't save. Then reboot phone and how does it react?

Ah! So, only one was selected (ATT) and the suggested fix didnt work. *But* I switched to "ATT LTE" (naturally) and it seems to have fixed it. Many thanks!
