I'm using the stock Bell 4.1.1 on my S3 and it's always searching for GPS every minute or so. In fact I can force it to just by turning the screen off and then on again. It finds a signal fine everytime, but after a minute it's checking again.
I've tried going through and disabling anything that could be using the GPS, but it's still happening. Is there an app out there that I can get that will tell me what is accessing the GPS and when? I really want to track this down.
Disable GPS except when you need it? Just a suggestion.

Thanks but that's just a workaround. My battery life isn't so bad I can't live with it. I just don't want to see that blinking icon up there all the time. I should only see that icon every 15 minutes at the most.
Somethings checking the gps and I want to find out who the culprit is.

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that my GPS seems to work fine now. All I did was to start the GPS Test app and chose 'clear AGPS'. Since then, I get a much faster GPS signal and it's even working indoors. It may as well be an illusion, but you might want to give it a try... Cheers, Andy.

Not tried the GPS Test App...
But I have used the Fasterfix and GPS Status Apps free from the Apps Market...
My GPS seems to get a fix within 10-20secs depending on location...
GPS Status & Toolbox works like a charm
For a long, long time I had been trying loads of solutions to why my GPS would never lock! Today, after doing a search here and reading about people complaining about cases blocking the signal, I tried to remove the case and got a lock right away! God damnit...
I can't believe a simple hard rubber case is blocking the signal completely.
It also depends on the way you hold it, don't block the gps receiver at the bottom and it seems to lock faster, I used to not be able to get a lock on at all until I tried holding it differently and it actually got a lock! Although it is a bit of a hassle but it seems to do the job
I had this situation:
my battery used to work as always (max 20h). One day it started lasting the double (AHD Revolution 5.1.9, MJD's kernel V22 or so) and I was incredibly surprised and happy. A few days later I find myself with the GPS not working. I batterypulled my device while using the GPS and it fixed itself but since that I lost my wonderful battery life... is it normal?
Poochie, are you sure that you did not simply disable GPS (lower battery usage) and enable it again with the reboot?

Yes, I'm sure, I never disable it because I believe it does not matter if you don't use gps apps.

Is there an app I can use to see what apps are accessing Gps ony phone? I swear every 5 minutes Gps is activating and trying to locate me! I think it's really hurting my battery life.

Wipe cache nd dalvik and fix permissions, as of gingerbread programs cant effect GPS directly.
So its ur config, sorry to have to break it to ye..
Also, side note, if no GPS required apps are running, ur GPS doesnt actually try to triangulate unless requested.. so..
Basicly it would be using ur battery if on, but no connections would really be made unless u see the triangulating icon by clock..
That's the icon that I always see. It blinks a few times then stops. Sometimes it stays solid for a a few seconds before it turns off. could it be Google latitude causing it?

Quite possibly actually. Try clearin data for it and maps then booting TO CWM and clearing cache and rebooting
Did as you described. Problem still there. I can't understand. It's even blinking while I type this!

OK I discovered the culprit. Skyvi was trying to Gps my location at all times. I guess their new beacon feature is not really optimized yet.

I must say, I love my T989 except for the GPS. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned.
Problem is, I use GPS daily for my job. The GPS just always seems to be problematic in that while driving, using Google Navigation, the GPS signal randomly drops out. I will be driving, and miss a turn because the GPS seemingly lost signal, then after 30-90 seconds, it regains signal and the Navigation catches up. The entire time I am driving, the blue circle around the blue arrow in google navigation seems pretty big. This circle indicates how accurate the GPS is and it seems I never get really good accuracy. It seems like I just get low GPS locking ability and thus it's not always exactly accurate and frequently drops for a 30-90 seconds.
I have tried Jedi Knight ROM based on 4.0.4 and it was the worst, nearly unusable, took forever to lock and dropped a lot.
I am now using Jedi Mind Trick based on 4.0.3 and it seems to lock decently fast, but still never gets entirely accurate like my HTC phones all did, and it still drops for 30-90 seconds often, making it very hard to rely on for Navigation.
Many times I have flashed AGPS.zip and that helps lock faster, but the GPS still drops often and never seems to get reliably accurate.
I know this fixes it for many, and has made Jedi Mind Trick usable for me, but still not very dependable.
Does this phone just have a crappy GPS Receiver?
I haven't tried roms before 4.0.3, did GPS work better on earlier versions, or before ICS?
Is there any roms I should try that might work better with GPS Navigation?
Anyone using GPS daily without any drops at all? If so, what ROM?
Should I try different Radios or something?

aGPS patch works wonders. Which version of it are you using?

Google Specific 3.1 No SSL
That was the only thing that got my GPS usable.
It now locks fast, but just doesn't seem to ever have a strong signal and is very prone to dropping out.
Try downloading the "GPS status" app from the play store. Hit menu>tools>manage A-GPS> and Download.

I had similar problems with jmt and other ROMs, even after trying several of the GPS fixes.
I've been using cm10 nightly 10/12 build now and GPS is perfect, nearly instant locks and no drops during navigation.
The only downside I've found is battery life, its not horrible but its no jmt either. Expect 12-16 hour battery life.
To me, jellybean offers so much that I'm willing to forgive battery life for the first time.
Hope his helps

I dont know why some of you have issue with GPS. The issue is not from the rom. I think your phone might be in a bad batch or your GPS files are not set up correctly.
For me, GPS on our phone is very great. It locks fast and never loses signal. The accuracy is within 20 feet.

No, it is the ROM. With every ROM flash GPS files get over written but never cleaned up. I constantly have to flash the aGPS fix to get GPS back. That goes for every other android phone I've owned too.

I also use the GPS almost daily to track my runs with Endomondo application, and sometimes specially when running slow the GPS gets fixed to a location and will not update until 15-30 seconds after, maybe the same happens to you when driving in the city and you are very slow.
There is a feature called "GPS Static Navigation" that Samsung disabled by default in some of their phones, basically on the ones using a SirfIV GPS Chipset. The problem here is that our phone (SGH-T989) does not us that type of GPS Chip(set).
I've been trying to find a way to know the status of the GPS Static Navigation in our phone, but I haven't found anything about it just the info got from pdadb.net which is the following;
Satellite-Navigation
Built-in;GPS_module: Supported
GPSrotocol: NMEA 0183
GPS_Antenna: Internal antenna
Complementary-GPS;Services: Assisted GPS, QuickGPS, Geotagging, Simultaneous GPS
Navigation:Chip(set): Qualcomm gpsOne
Since this Chip(set) works with Assisted GPS, trying GPS Status application from Google Market and going to Menu / Tools / Manage A-GPS state / Download; it will help you a little bit since it will download the A-GPS XTRA Data (works better and faster if you do it while using Wi-Fi) that will help GPS to lock faster and get accurate positioning while on the road, it will last some days but it is not a definitive solution.
I still researching on knowing more about how "GPS Static Navigation" works in our phone, I even opened a question discussion about it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940294
Please let me know if some of you know more about this,
Thanks, and hope this give you a bit more insights about it!

That's weird. I have flashed jedi, AOKP, CM, and i never had problem with GPS. I also own Galaxy S 4G, which has a crappy GPS due to the hardware failure. No Rom or app can fix that. That's why i think it is not Rom issue.

Was stock rom GPS any good? Try stock first and go from there to pinpoint issue

I had the Vibrant S and I know what youre saying!
I agree that it's possibly your GPS at fault. I've tried multiple ROMs (using Jedi Mind Trick X now) and have always very fast GPS lock and great accuracy when using ICS ROMs.
Something on my Gnex is going GPS crazy today after the 4.2 upgrade. I've tried disabling Google Now, checking logcats for likely suspects, freezing various apps, but I can't narrow it down. It's causing battery drain and preventing deep sleep. Any ideas how to figure out which app has been calling for GPS so frequently?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Yeah my GPS won't even lock after I did the upgrade yesterday. I dropped my phone also so that could be the reason idk
I still don't know which app is responsible, but I realized I've been getting constant data dropouts today. Every time data comes back, the GPS icon pops up for a little while. Tried flashing the H1 radio and I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Bump. Is there ANY way on Android to track down which app is responsible for firing up the GPS?
Recently the GPS crosshairs icon flashes on my status bar like every 5 seconds then flips off...on and off, on and off all day. I know the simple fix would to be just to turn off gps, but again this just started happening recently. I always left my gps on all the time and the crosshairs icon would only flash when an app was using it, like in google maps or navigation. So I'm assuming it's an app that's using my gps in the background somewhere. How can I figure out what is using it?
Also, I've always kept my screen on the brightest setting with no problem regarding battery life. But I just looked in Settings>Battery and it shows that the screen is responsible for 80% of the battery, with no mention of gps. So, any ideas about what's going on with my battery?
Better battery stats will help you find what's causing the issue. Its a paid app on the play store, look for the picture of a battery and plus sign.

You can find BBB here for free for XDA users.
My suggestion is to look at your apps and see what has Location or GPS permissions (ie. Facebook/G+/4Square, Maps, old Latitude-type settings, anything the "checks you in",...).
It is an app that is broadcasting your position and initiating your GPS to trigger. Find the app and fix the problem.
