GPS crazy - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Something on my Gnex is going GPS crazy today after the 4.2 upgrade. I've tried disabling Google Now, checking logcats for likely suspects, freezing various apps, but I can't narrow it down. It's causing battery drain and preventing deep sleep. Any ideas how to figure out which app has been calling for GPS so frequently?

Yeah my GPS won't even lock after I did the upgrade yesterday. I dropped my phone also so that could be the reason idk

I still don't know which app is responsible, but I realized I've been getting constant data dropouts today. Every time data comes back, the GPS icon pops up for a little while. Tried flashing the H1 radio and I'll see how it goes tomorrow.

Bump. Is there ANY way on Android to track down which app is responsible for firing up the GPS?

Anyone else tried using Google Earth?

I loaded it up and used it for about 3 mins or so (gpu force is on). I could feel the phone starting to get hot and about that time my screen went black (which has done this before) so I pulled the battery out which usually fixed previous issues. Well this time everything would boot up and once the launcher loaded my GPS icon appeared in the status bar and the device would crash and reboot again. After numerous battery pulls and booting into safe mode and everything else I could think of the problem never corrected, doing the same thing everytime. Eventually had to restore with factory image.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this? Also, it doesn't help that in new to android and was completely uneducated on a fix besides what I did and was a little turned off to the OS at that point.
On the other hand I love my Galaxy Nexus lol

i play around with it here & there but have never had that happen. also, i have gps/location turned off(always that way) so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I'm playing around with it aswell and up to 30-40 min straight without it ever even getting tempered.. with gps location turned on and over wifi..

no issues here with earth over wifi. gps off. didn't get too hot either. also loaded faster and with less lag than my transformer.
I've also used it for more than 15 minutes without problems. It does heat up, but nowhere near the ungodly temperatures it reaches while playing games.
gps seems to heat up more when charging it seems. with any phone. but i wouldn't sweat it too much unless your phone is rebooting or melting.

I had a few freezes (mostly in google maps) but they were resolved with a battery pull. Your expereince could have been just very bad luck.
Try this App to check your phones hardware: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.into.stability&feature=order_history
I had no problem running it for 20 min, no errors occurred. Phone gets really warm to the right of the camera when the App is active, which is to be expected.
Both mine loaded fine.

gets hot and saps power

Every so often my galaxy nexus will just get really hot in my pocket and start draining battery like crazy. I stopped all the apps and processes and the battery was still draining. I even turned the phone off but when i turned it back on it just got really hot again and the battery was still plummeting.
I'm pretty sure this didnt happen before I got the 4.0.2 update but might have nothing to do with it.
I even got 2x battery to see if it helped on some useless processes that might be causing it and I though it worked as it didnt happen again for a while... until yesterday.
This happened to anyone else or have any idea what it could be?
You need to more specific, Are you rooted? overclocked? pure stock?...something is causing it to run this way either that or your pure stock nexus could have a defect..any device getting hot is causing stress to the battery and hardware, which over all long period of time will most likely cause the device to break...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
oh yeah. Its just pure stock
pull the battery out for like 10 seconds...and power it back on,and clear all recent apps..what is 2x battery a app?..or do you mean the extended battery?....

I usually reboot after a update ..just to make sure settings are reset and working properly
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Usually this is due to a rogue app. Use the built-in battery monitor as well as BetterBatteryStats to identify the app and remove it.
BTW, it's the battery drain causing the phone to get hot. Heat, by itself, will not cause battery drain (not on the timescale you're talking about at least). Just a cause and effect FYI.
clear all recent apps? i turned it off and back on. i shouldnt really need to take the battery out should i? but then after a while it stops doing it??? like when i plugged in the charger.
2xbattery is suppose to be a battery saving app

when i went to the battery monitor it just said the main battery use was exchange services, screen and OS not much else.
plus when rebooting the phone shouldnt this have stopped the "rouge app"?
Some apps will start themselves at boot. A reboot will thus not solve the problem.
As for exchange, what are your settings? Push, or poll? If poll, how often? Are you still getting email?

Yeah im gettin email its on push. It only happens now and again tho, not all the time. Plus the battery saver is suppose to minimize checks and stuff
Is your phone holding signal? My phone only gets hot when it can't find and hold a signal.

This could actually be a possibility come to think of it. Every time its happened I was in a place known as "the bat cave".
Is there any theory on this?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Its possible that exchange services was top of the battery use list actually. Would this have anything to do with searching for or holding a signal?
Next time it happens I'll try closing exchange services to see if its that or if it it is I'm not getting a signal I'll try putting it in airplane mode to see if that stops it.

Need GPS Help / Advice.. best rom, or android version for GPS on T989??

I must say, I love my T989 except for the GPS. It is by far the best phone I have ever owned.
Problem is, I use GPS daily for my job. The GPS just always seems to be problematic in that while driving, using Google Navigation, the GPS signal randomly drops out. I will be driving, and miss a turn because the GPS seemingly lost signal, then after 30-90 seconds, it regains signal and the Navigation catches up. The entire time I am driving, the blue circle around the blue arrow in google navigation seems pretty big. This circle indicates how accurate the GPS is and it seems I never get really good accuracy. It seems like I just get low GPS locking ability and thus it's not always exactly accurate and frequently drops for a 30-90 seconds.
I have tried Jedi Knight ROM based on 4.0.4 and it was the worst, nearly unusable, took forever to lock and dropped a lot.
I am now using Jedi Mind Trick based on 4.0.3 and it seems to lock decently fast, but still never gets entirely accurate like my HTC phones all did, and it still drops for 30-90 seconds often, making it very hard to rely on for Navigation.
Many times I have flashed AGPS.zip and that helps lock faster, but the GPS still drops often and never seems to get reliably accurate.
I know this fixes it for many, and has made Jedi Mind Trick usable for me, but still not very dependable.
Does this phone just have a crappy GPS Receiver?
I haven't tried roms before 4.0.3, did GPS work better on earlier versions, or before ICS?
Is there any roms I should try that might work better with GPS Navigation?
Anyone using GPS daily without any drops at all? If so, what ROM?
Should I try different Radios or something?
- Mike
aGPS patch works wonders. Which version of it are you using?

Google Specific 3.1 No SSL
That was the only thing that got my GPS usable.
It now locks fast, but just doesn't seem to ever have a strong signal and is very prone to dropping out.
Try downloading the "GPS status" app from the play store. Hit menu>tools>manage A-GPS> and Download.

I had similar problems with jmt and other ROMs, even after trying several of the GPS fixes.
I've been using cm10 nightly 10/12 build now and GPS is perfect, nearly instant locks and no drops during navigation.
The only downside I've found is battery life, its not horrible but its no jmt either. Expect 12-16 hour battery life.
To me, jellybean offers so much that I'm willing to forgive battery life for the first time.
Hope his helps

I dont know why some of you have issue with GPS. The issue is not from the rom. I think your phone might be in a bad batch or your GPS files are not set up correctly.
For me, GPS on our phone is very great. It locks fast and never loses signal. The accuracy is within 20 feet.

No, it is the ROM. With every ROM flash GPS files get over written but never cleaned up. I constantly have to flash the aGPS fix to get GPS back. That goes for every other android phone I've owned too.

I also use the GPS almost daily to track my runs with Endomondo application, and sometimes specially when running slow the GPS gets fixed to a location and will not update until 15-30 seconds after, maybe the same happens to you when driving in the city and you are very slow.
There is a feature called "GPS Static Navigation" that Samsung disabled by default in some of their phones, basically on the ones using a SirfIV GPS Chipset. The problem here is that our phone (SGH-T989) does not us that type of GPS Chip(set).
I've been trying to find a way to know the status of the GPS Static Navigation in our phone, but I haven't found anything about it just the info got from pdadb.net which is the following;
Satellite-Navigation
Built-in;GPS_module: Supported
GPSrotocol: NMEA 0183
GPS_Antenna: Internal antenna
Complementary-GPS;Services: Assisted GPS, QuickGPS, Geotagging, Simultaneous GPS
Navigation:Chip(set): Qualcomm gpsOne
Since this Chip(set) works with Assisted GPS, trying GPS Status application from Google Market and going to Menu / Tools / Manage A-GPS state / Download; it will help you a little bit since it will download the A-GPS XTRA Data (works better and faster if you do it while using Wi-Fi) that will help GPS to lock faster and get accurate positioning while on the road, it will last some days but it is not a definitive solution.
I still researching on knowing more about how "GPS Static Navigation" works in our phone, I even opened a question discussion about it @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1940294
Please let me know if some of you know more about this,
Thanks, and hope this give you a bit more insights about it!

That's weird. I have flashed jedi, AOKP, CM, and i never had problem with GPS. I also own Galaxy S 4G, which has a crappy GPS due to the hardware failure. No Rom or app can fix that. That's why i think it is not Rom issue.

Was stock rom GPS any good? Try stock first and go from there to pinpoint issue

I had the Vibrant S and I know what youre saying!
I agree that it's possibly your GPS at fault. I've tried multiple ROMs (using Jedi Mind Trick X now) and have always very fast GPS lock and great accuracy when using ICS ROMs.

GPS Searching every minute or so

I'm using the stock Bell 4.1.1 on my S3 and it's always searching for GPS every minute or so. In fact I can force it to just by turning the screen off and then on again. It finds a signal fine everytime, but after a minute it's checking again.
I've tried going through and disabling anything that could be using the GPS, but it's still happening. Is there an app out there that I can get that will tell me what is accessing the GPS and when? I really want to track this down.
Disable GPS except when you need it? Just a suggestion.

Thanks but that's just a workaround. My battery life isn't so bad I can't live with it. I just don't want to see that blinking icon up there all the time. I should only see that icon every 15 minutes at the most.
Somethings checking the gps and I want to find out who the culprit is.

Frequent "GPS Signal Lost"

So weird Issue.
Using Google Maps on MaximusHD 6 with the latest t-mo firmware (2.11) I get constant "GPS SIGNAL LOST" when obviously driving and using it as my nav since I got it. I'm in southern California with a pretty good LTE signal almost everywhere. The highways are pretty open so trees, mountains, buildings etc are ruled out as a probable cost.
Now today I noticed that I normally keep the phone locked/screen off when driving since it's connected over BT so there's no real need to look at it. During a normal 15-20min drive I would get the signal lost alert a lot. Upwards of 10 or so times on that single drive. While with my M8 it never happened especially when literally not 5min after getting out of the parking lot doing maybe 20mph down the street. I first I thought i messed something up since I took the phone apart to apply thermal paste to keep it from overheating.
However today on a drive back I kept the phone with the screen on. Never did it lose signal while the screen was on, but a minute after I locked the phone (screen off) did it lose GPS signal. I turned it back on and after driving 20min or so the signal wasn't lost.
So overall has anyone experience a similar issue? Full cellular coverage with frequent google maps alerts that the GPS signal was lost. Maybe a background gps process being killed or another coming up and hindering it.
Gonna wait for the Thanksgiving break to mess around with stock/custom roms and see if it's just something that can be fixed with a reflash.
I'm having the same issue, have you figured anything out? Have you tried using a different app besides google maps to see if it's the actual app doing it's power save feature, or the background powersaving process being started by the phone being screen off? Really interested because my phone starts burning up to extreme temps...
On the backup I had with the issue I narrowed It down to possibly a background process cutting it off once the screen turns back. Power saving was off and all that would stick while screen was off was maps, Google service, and social apps.
As for the cause I couldn't figure it out. I went with a stock from without issues. Then went back to custom roms and haven't had the issue again. Also I drastically lowered my app count. Barely use any apps not needed for basic functionality.
As for the temp issue you're having. I noticed gets warm just like any other device when using GPS. I have opened up the phone and applied a new thermal coat following off a thread around here.
I have another issue came up where the phone would seek out a GPS signal while battery saving was selected to even location turned off. Killed my battery in a heart beat. Hasn't happened again.
I would suggest you make a full backup and either flash a stock rom or redownload whatever custom rom your using. Do a trial run for a day or two with minimal apps and see if it improves.
Here's where it gets interesting..
I used to own a galaxy s3 i9300 and custom kernels caused exactly the same issue. Flashing a stock rom solved it and a few other issues, one in particular was gps inaccurate coordinates.
Now I have moved to an m9. This has in the past run great. It is completely stock and untouched by curious fingers.. However, recently my gps has been running at random intervals even though it is completely off in all accessable settings. I can't find the culprit and it sapped 40% in a few minutes. It was literally a short face to face conversation, jumped back in the car and went for my phone for waze.. Dead as a dodo..
Confuzzled completely as to whether this is the actual rom doing it or an app..
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Android 6 should be released around here soon so maybe that'll improve/fix these issues. I wouldn't be surprised if Google services is causing this since it has in the past drained batteries and causes similar issues. If the kernel is involved then the issue has been seen on both stock and custom.
well it may be a setting from the maximums HD, try using other Rom and tell us if problem is solved, try HD Revolution or ViperOne.
Hi all, I got a Moto G3 and having issues with the gps no signal message, it is on and off, but more the time that have no signal. So have heard that Android 6 could be the guilty one.. Do any of you know if there is a fix yet? ?
