[Q] Long Press Back Second Counter - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I posted this on the main questions and answers thread but it hasn't got any replies so I figured I'd create a new post.
When using every cyanogenmod 9 beta versions the kill all foreground apps feature by long pressing back took about a second to work. The more recent stable versions take about 3-4 seconds.
I know that if it can be changed from 1 to 3-4 or vice versa that it can be changed to whatever a developer wants to change it to. My question is this: how can I change this myself?
I don't know dirt about programming or tweaking anything but I'm a fast enough learner and know how to research how to's well enough.
I'm sure this has been asked a million times but I couldn't find any useful threads. All I could come across were various threads where users *****ed and argued over why whomever wanted to use the feature for whatever reasons and all that nonsense.
Any help I could get would be nice. I don't have any problems reading long pages of directions to accomplish this because I would really like to start using these new updates for Cyanogenmod. However the only way I will is if I can revert that tweak. It's petty, I know, but that was among the functions I used the most and sorely miss.
If it can't be done or if the information on how to do it doesn't want to be divulged, fair enough, I'll leave well enough alone. Thanks to anyone in advance for helping. I'll stop typing now. I've said too much and drank too little.
'Til then

i have done a lot of searching on the forum and have seen some programs have problems. some of these have fixes like slingbox.
i want to make sure that these programs will work after the black 2.5 upgrade. so far black 2.5 seems to be the main one people like.
here is a list of programs i am worried about.
any feed back would be great.

If you actually took the time to read for a while you'd know that with any ROM some apps will be buggy, and then along comes some fixes. Stick with WM5. If you don't have time to investigate what you're getting into, don't waste your time flashing a new ROM unless you know before-hand that you're gonna run into problems. How about this. Try a ROM, add the apps you want. If you run into problems work through them like EVERYONE else, because your configuration wont be the same as someone else's, and IF YOU TOOK THE TIME TO READ THREADS you'd already know what apps are buggy with WM6, and the ones not listed you can add if you experience a problem. That's how the whole problem/fix thing works. Sorry. I'm just sick of these threads everyday from people wanting to know some magical setup or which ROM is TEH BESTEST cause they just want a finished product and don't care about the learning process. When you make the jump to flash your device, you become a "tester" like everyone else. It's not rocket science, but it's not finger paints either.

ronfin44,
i "READ" the posts i know there are bugs.(hence the question on the programs)
why would i risk a bricked phone or waste any extra time if some one else has already found out the needed info. most of the programs i asked about are some what common. it would not be so crazy to think there are a few people here that have tried and have some feed back.
based on the feed back i will decide if i want to go farther.
is it too much to come up with a risk analysis before committing to a project?
my god if asking for some feed back on a small list was such a sin why even have a forum.
"Risk annalysis". When you decide to do something like this there's a risk, but an app that may not be "buggy" for one, may be "buggy" for another. Try 2.5, load your apps, and see if everything runs fine. It's usually not the apps that cause problems but the development of the ROM, ie a ton of fixes that follow once one has been released. The apps with a history are posted ALL over this forum. If you haven't seen any of yours then why not try the ROM and see? It's not magic. If you run into a problem, post it and we'll help ya work it out. The forum gets cluttered with so many threads asking questions that could be answered by hanging around and doing a lot of reading and using the search feature. I know the search function isn't perfect, but it works.
Advice; load 2.5, load your apps. Good luck. If you run into some problems, check the 2.5 thread FIRST for an answer, if not, POST IN THAT THREAD about the problems you're having with THAT ROM and people will be happy to help. It just keeps the forum cleaner.
I can report that IM+ 4.3 works without crashes or any downtime, although it drains the battery like a mofo (didn't on WM5), it works 1000x better than it ever did on my 8125 with WM5.0.
Edit: other versons of im+ 4.9 ect. will crash / lock up your hermes on WM6.0 roms so be aware you MUST use 4.3 or higher.

Backing Up Everything

Apologies if this appears elsewhere but I have looked without success. If it does then a link to the solution would be great.
Basically I found this site a few weeks ago and since then have been tinkering with my phone. I've tried various roms, added different programs, played about with the settings and so on. Today I have finally got it just how I want it. It is overclocked to run quickly but safely. The today screen is perfect. It contains everything I need including my huge list of contacts. And my theme is spot-on. However usually in life when everything is right something big and hairy appears out of nowhere and dumps on you. Its got to the point where I panic every time I turn it on just in case it crashes and I need to start all over again.
My question therefore is if anyone knows of a utility (or can give detailed instructions) to completely back up the phone. Right down to the user settings, theme and contacts. If possible maybe even to create a rom image of my phone so that if it does ever crash I can reinstall the whole thing from one simple file. I assume this sort of thing must be possible because Kavana and Ricky produce such wonderful roms with various programs, etc pre-installed.
Can it be done? And if so - can it be done by an enthusiastic amateur or do you need to be a tech guru? I should add I don't mind paying if I need to buy a piece of commercial software to achieve this.
GS
Did you even bother to search google for "smartphone backup" ? The very first link that comes up, takes you right to the software you say you need. I apologize for being harsh, but I hate the lack of common sense...
An option
Not sure about the cooked 6.1 Roms. Maybe someone else might know or have tried.
http://www.spritesoftware.com/
I use this and it's well worth it.
if u just mean the saved registry values and what not u can always export the registry so that way if u have to hard reset the phone or if a new amazingly wowlike rom is released and u NEED to flash u can always import the registry values of the chomes and it'll be the way u left it (thats what I do for my myfaves and my programs)

No problem, and you are entitled to your opinion. however its replies like that which stop people making posts to forums like this. Everyone has to start somewhere, and one man's obvious "common sense" answer is another man's dilemma.
As for using google... yep I could have done that but google links to hundreds of pages, some owned by people trying to sell software which obviously means they won't be objective. Others have methods which could damage a phone and because I don't know the writers how do I know which methods to trust? Ergo I decided to come to site I know, with people whose technical knowhow I trust, and to search the forum and then ask them for advice. To me, that is common sense. Isn't that one of the reasons that places like this exist? So non techheads can ask guys like you for help?
No offence intended and, for what its worth, you are one of the guys whose advice on this forum has helped me countless times. So thank you for that no matter what. Without your posts I'd never have got this far in the first place! I mean that.
As for the other replies... thanks guys. I will look into the registry stuff. And I will certainly check out the software link. If I do find some info on google, I hope you folks will help me pick the best method to use and avoid bad advice.
Thanks again.
GS
Okay the Sprite software is perfect. And now I've checked it out maybe my question was a stupid one. Still, its nice to have a recommendation from an independent source. I've been burnt in the past by bad google advice.
Sorry if I've wasted anyone's time.

X1 Panles from MODACO: Working Almost PERFECT!

Hi all,
Firstly, Posting this in a seperate thread, as SINGH here is getting a bit annoyed seeing me write about someone else doing similar project, in his thread. People have to have a open mind too, when it comes to developing, and should appreciate other people's work and not be insecure about their project.
This is just like different members here developing great roms for us. But we all know every rom here, suits some, doesnt suit some. And most of us here keep switching from ROM to ROM, just to try out new stuff, and i see the ROM developers here are very open to people using other roms and reporting in their thread about it, discussing out the goods of other ROM, in another ROM's thread. Rom Builders i have seen, in this forum, have been very open to this and are taking up good bits from others. Only when this is there, we have a neat and healthy run going on with new roms coming up.
Enough of this for now,
This is to present you the work of PAUL, the ADMIN at MODACO, and he has compiled these in a very good manner and is working great.
I have been using the Panels by MODACO from past 2 days nonstop now, and its working SUPERB, without any hangups at all, and i have been switching from the Fish Panel to X1 Panel to Mobile Shell Panel and they are all working just perfect. No extra Battery Drain, no big jump in memory usage, no Slowing of device, No Hangups either.
Only problem, to say if, i see is that changing between panels, is taking a few seconds, and is not instant. And it can't be assigned to a hardware button.
Please have a look here to download and know more of it.
http://www.modaco.com/content/blackstone-blackstone-modaco-com/276540/panels-on-touch-hd-installer/
Please install it at your own risk, as Paul clearly states it as EARLY BETA!, for me, It works Perfect. might not for you. But if u are game enough, then go ahead, try it out, i hope it will work just perfect for you too!
Thanks again to PAUL @ MODACO.
PS: Singh's cab when it comes out, surely must be much better than this as he is working on it in depth, and sorting out these delay problems too, i dont deny this, but as of now, to play around, Modaco has something for you. I highly respect SINGH's work on the Panels, and wish him best of luck.
For clarity, Modaco's version does not work perfectly and has all the constraints and issues that have prevented !SINGH! from releasing a CAB.
Many of insane devil's comments are valid but please don't be misled into thinking that this is a fully functional solution. Use with caution and in the expectation of lots of soft resets.
If you are desperate to have something to show to your mates, go for it, otherwise read all the stuff in !SINGH!'s thread about why it's not currently working and accept that this is a real challenge, technically.
Fraser, have u used the Modaco's cab?
Personally, still going on good with the panels at 2.5 days, i have not had to make any resets till now, and memory hasn't gone up above 58% usage,(for me, without panels, usually its around 55-56%). And best part is, i havn't even disabled the TF3D! so i have both working perfectly well. and i just hope it goes on like that for a long time! Even if i have a reset right now, its still good score having to reset it once in 2.5 days. Singh will be able to package it better and do away the flaws that i mention below, for sure, no doubt in that. But for now, this works as near perfect.
I just dont understand why everyone is making such a big deal of it, while it is working just fine. As i did say, the only problem is that the Panel's choice menu, takes a few seconds to load (takes 8-9 Seconds on mine), which is ok as of now, to think it is something new, but once u are on a panel, and dont intend to change it every few minutes, this shouldnt be a problem at all.
Another Flaw is that when the HOME button is pressed (having TF3D enabled) it goes to TF3D, and the Panels shut down. So again have to open Panels and select the one u want.
Lastly, it cant be mapped to a button. Best way is to have that to show on ur start menu. And then select from there. OR Have it as a "favourite" app on the X1 Panel / SPB Mobile Shell panel, and select it right from your screen, close to your finger.
You are right, working really good! Personally I do not notice any particular slowness even in switching between them (2-3 secs). As you said not perfect but usable.
Still have to fully test stability though.
I also installed it.
Basically it is OK.
It is not so slow as I think.
I encountered 2 episodes of hanging.
1) switching to TF3D without closing panel, then open and close communication panel.
2) switching to TF3D without closing panel, then soft reset.
It then hanged upon the green window mobile screen.
Otherwise, it is good.
Probably, complete closing of panel is essential.
So can you:
Use the Media Panel? No
Use the Facebook Panel? No
Use the Radio Panel? No
Switch between panels more than 5-10 times without a soft reset? Probably not
So it's not working perfectly then. Even the posts over on Modaco say that.
At the moment this remains no more than a toy and again, to the inexperienced and unwary I would say by all means try this, but please do so in full awareness of the issues it may cause.
I've been using the xperia panel from this morning and I had no soft resets till now. Actually I really like this panel because it's really comprehensive. No problems not having media, facebook and radio because I can have shortcuts on the panel itself for those. As for the switching I did played a lot the first hour without any issue but I don't think that you will switch tons of times a day in any case.
That said I think it's only a good thing if many people work on the same thing you know, competition just gives you one more reason to work harder...
really perfect
nice work madaco
Hey.. just installed. It is running good, no issues as yet. Will update if any... Thanks for sharing this with us.

Really sad to see that u dont like it one bit, Fraser, but then, its ok. Afterall, people are slowly staring to use it now, and they are also having great experience. Maybe you should give it a go again, you might have a problem with the rom that u are using, which is popping troubles while using the Panels.
About the Media Facebook and Radio panels, frankly fraser, we gotta be less picky when it comes to stuff not meant for our phones. And anyway, the best panels are the X1 panel, SPB Mobile shell panel and the Today screen panel (have pocketplus today plugin+inesoft addressbook plugin+messages+calendar+tasks). And for the Fancy use, the Fish panel is the best. All these three panels are working superb!
to All:
I haven't had resets at all till now, but in next five minutes my phone will get reset as my battery is on 1% now, and i am waiting it to switch off completely, and then put it to recharge, as am using a new high capacity battery, which needs to be charged only after being discharged compeltely for first 2-3 cycles.
Till now, i didnt have any hangups with using TF3D together. And i am switching to TF3D once for 2-3 minutes once every half hour to see the stock update on the "stocks" page in TF3D, very useful for me!
Just keep playing around, maybe it will get set in a few days once it gets used to your rom.
Anyone here knows where we can get more panels, which are made by developers other than SE themselves? i had read somewhere that there is a site which has them, but not getting it now.
Well a bit disappointing. I follow the thread on Modaco and i was happy to see this posting, but old news. Still no update and the first release was last year.
Well for something not designed for our device it runs rather well.
Actually I really like the way the default x1 panel was designed since it has almost all the essential features of tf3d in one single screen and also the way that rss feeds work that from my point of view, tf3d lacks on this matter.
I strongly recommend to all of you to test it just for the experience since in the worst case scenario you will just soft reset your device and you can uninstall it at any time.
Have fun...
i also installed it a few weeks ago. it's working perfectly on my device. sometimes it will freeze and i have to softreset but everything works fine to me.
Is there any chance this might work on a vogue?

To be clear, it's not in the least bit about what I like and don't like, it's about the fact that this is imperfect and people, especially the many noobs on this site need to be aware of that fact.
I'm delighted for you that your version seems to be working, if highly sceptical. But please do some reading on the various Panels threads already in existence dating back to November and you will find abundant evidence of proper testing that confirms this is the exception rather than the norm. You have uncovered nothing new, merely Modaco's cruder version of the work !SINGH! produced for beta testing back at the end of November. Neither work properly for most people, irrespective of the amount of time you allow for it to get 'used to your rom'...!!
The reason !SINGH! did not release his version is because the many people on the site who treat it as a helpdesk would have inundated him with 'you broke my phone...' nonsense. Frankly I'm not in the least bit interested whether people install it or not, I just think sweeping and inaccurate statements like 'it works perfectly' are dangerous and need to be balanced out by the weight of evidence.
So to all: please do as you wish, just do so in full knowledge of all the facts - I hope it works for you

never have I agreed more with a statement on this board. Absolutely well said Iain!!
I think that if you read the 1st post (and not just the title) it is VERY clear that it's a beta and you install it at your own risk (like anything you can download from here, developed by highly skilled people but nonetheless without ANY guarantee). This is again stated at Modaco's. I really don't understand why you repeat the same (obvious) alerts many times. That said I'm suggesting something new here, why not start a poll to state the usefullness/stability of this panel version. That could help the common user to decide wether to give it a try or not.
Firstly.. Why create a new thread????????????
modaco created one long ago.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=453624
It's been dead a month.. with not a single post, but it is exactly the same as this thread.! Take the hint. It's no longer being worked on!

I was weary on saying anything.. then I saw this post, and I too agree with what Iain & Mallman said.
I made a comment on the other thread at the start of Dec2008
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2996255&postcount=350
In that post.. I actually told them how to re-create exactly what Paul had.
Just that sweeping statements that said Perfectly.. and Brilliantly,.. for noobs with a new HD in their hands..
Perfectly = I have to have it and it won't break my phone.
and it is far far far from stable or perfect. You will learn in due time. This I know as there is no way your HD was manufactured more stable at running modaco's panels cab than any other HD on the planet.
It is flaky... and if you had read the other thread (which i know you were posting in in Nov last year)...you would know there are those way before yourself that said exactly the same.. then stated later on..' Ok.. it is bad'.. or 'it's caused hang ups... and i have de-installed it'.... have you forgotten?
Some of those are ones that made me furious and made me question why I would even bother continuing..
anyways.. I leave you to your thread...
Iain... Nice to see you mate!
Mallman.. You gets everywhere!
Have a great 2009 to you both.
PS.. I agree with the never a more correct statement ever made on here than Iains
PPS.. And If you want to advance it some.. Work on what i put on that post above.. and you can see clearly what you need to do to get to Pauls stage..and then work forward to giving everyone on here a stable version...for me too
PPPS .. You got the Title wrong... ITS X1 Panels not Panles!
I hope someone somewhere gets a working version soon, my 1 year old daughter loves the fish and I love anything that gives daddy some peace and quiet
to add what singh has already explained, i also has already tried and install the panels from modaco almost a month now.
yes it seems work alright for couple days... but eventually u will experience hangs more then b4 trust me... those panels are still inside my hd. but i never touch it anymore... do it only to show off that the hd can play the x1 panels... and show kids the fish... ofcourse after that i must reset as it create freeze.
so for you who wanted to try.. try it... but no 1 to blame hereee install the cab try the panels. and stop using it. it will give you screen freeze more day by day!!
singh i hope u still developing the x1 panel for our beloved hd bro!!!!

[Q] HTC TyTN II does'nt boot with Android

Hi, I have read and follow al the steps in the thread "How to replace Windows Mobile with Android (Guide)", including the step by step "HowToInstallWithAtoolsNand" in SourceForge.net but I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.
I have my TyTN II with 3.34 HardSPL and the latest Radio ROM that I use to load alll the Windows ROM without any problem. But when I flash my ROM with and Android build what it happens is that afterward it installs it, when the device is booting it appears a message saying "Intall module for this kernel" and the boot process stops there.
Y tried putting inside /andboot folder directly the "androidinstall.tar" that I downloaded from the thread's build (for example the "Incubus26Jc's Super E Cmod 5.0.8 T4 Beta 3". Also I tried to open that "androidinstall.tar" in atools, mix it with 2.6.32 modules and generating a new androidinstall.tar and putting it together with install-seq.sh inside /andboot following all the steps explained in "HowToInstallWithAtoolsNand" but always happens the same.
Can anybody know what could be happening?
Thanks in advanced.
Guido.

Perhaps you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848921
To start, use a newer build. Then you won't need any updates. The latest builds from thoughtless kyle, clemsyn, scoot and I all have the necessary fix needed. If you want Cyanogen Mod then use scoot or mine. Our builds are based on CM 6.1 which is much newer with more features.

You you get all your answers from quick searches, you start to become lazy and unable to search properly. This is a BB, where all forums, threads, and posts are permanent. Available always. They are, so that others can come, read, SEARCH, and if, and only if they don't find the answer, open a thread.
Now, if we didn't wanted this... perhaps the dev's would have opened a chatroom on IRC and we could all be there to answer THE SAME ANSWERS over and over again.
Oh by the way, please explain how can you participate in a forum... without ever replying ? And he did answer something... as you putted it yourself... clever.
Listen...why don't you spend your time answering my question instead of bla bla bla about forum uses.

cause that is what the real community is ment to be or not?
So this guy thinks devs are forced to solve his problem? Have some selfesteem and try to solve it by urself, even my toddler could do it... Im starting to realize one of my college proffesors is right.... Windows stupifies people! (look at win7 logo: your PC simplified) Its like a black box when you cant see whats going on inside, you only have to now the input and output part of the system, ubuntu in the other hand forces users to learn some basic commands... the world would be a better place to live if we all had linux on our computers...
I just love it when people think that every site that offers something is required to offer support.
Not true, infact in the real world almost EVERY company in the U.S. of A does NOT have their own support, in fact it comes from 3rd party.
Same concept here, infact on this site, the userbase is filled with hardware tinkerers, software programmers, developers, IT professionals, etc, etc. They provide this stuff to you at no cost, and without warranty, meaning NO support unless it's something on their end (ex. programming error, etc), and then they provide fixes, which in case they did provide a fix in terms of a update package for android to fix the modules error.
I was the unfortunate one to run into this problem as well, and tried frantically to search for a reason why until I made a post explaining I couldn't find the source of the problem, and then they pointed me in the right direction and I went from there. Granted I ran into a second problem of my device running out of memory trying to apply the update, but that was an entirely un-related issue that I solved myself.
I myself am a hardware tinkerer, I love to break things, then fix them. I repair PCs, Laptops, hell even TVs in my spare time.
In retrospec. Things don't always work 100%, but for 95% of the people here, they go out of their way to try and fix it themselves and solve it themselves.
Everyone's right, there is a search button on these forums, and it takes probably 2 clicks to run a search, very simpl..... oh wait, Windows 7 can do it in 1 click, so I'm guessing 2 clicks is too complicated for you....

Please don't kill me but ...

i know this don't sound professional and to be honest a litttle annoying but

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32385441

2) Compile.
3) Done
...? huh ? i don't get it ...any help ?
I think the patch method is for more experienced users. I don't understand it either. It seems like it might not matter though. As long as you are running a ROM with the T Mobile theme engine, it's going to be available through the Play Store soon. Just a heads up, rather than starting a new thread, wait a couple of days to see if the requests for more information in the original thread turn anything up. Someone might well be writing up a how-to guide, but that kind of thing takes time to do right. We just need to be respectful of the fact that the people who are able to provide that kind of information are doing so as a hobby. Good work takes time, so let a little time pass.
Edit: Seems like there's already a how-to link posted.

The patch is for people that compile their own roms from source.
good day.
there's tutorials on both subjects.
i would think most don't have the determination to get there.
