So I read the tutorial on how to remove the MTD mod. I cant seem to get it to uninstall though. I tried flashing a new recovery image through terminal emulator and then doing a factory reset/wipe. Here are the steps I did to attempt to get rid of the MTD mod, please let me know where I went wrong here, thanks.
Flashed a new recovery via terminal emulator
Rebooted phone into recovery
Performed a nandroid backup of current ROM
Performed factory reset/wipe
Rebooted recovery
Nandroid restore of ROM
When this didn't work I attempted this:
Rebooted into recovery
Modified mtdpartmap.txt file with MTD 0
Ran the boot patcher
Factory reset/wipe
Nandroid restore
Both methods did not remove the MTD resizing I did. What/where did I go wrong?
All I do is run the boot patcher then reboot.
Wouldn't nandroid restore just return it to whatever it was when you backed it up?

Nandroid restore only restores the ROM itself though doesn't it which wouldnt impact the recovery image and boot flasher?
Ok, so I did the nandroid restore and then I ran the custom boot patcher with my mtdpartmap.txt set to MTD 0 and rebooted...looks like im stuck at the start up splash screen...what is going on???
EDIT: Figured it out:
Formatted system, data, and cache
Resized mtdpartmap.txt to "mtd 0"
Flashed boot patcher
Advanced nandroid restore of system, data, and cache
reboot
ROM booted right up and I am back to stock partition sizings.
Using cwm 6.0.3.1
trouble with /cache and /efs (.android_secure?)
if I attempt a full restore including all partitions, i get

My friend had this issue with his S2, I just told him to buy the USB Port/Flex Cable from ebay or eTradSupply, then I replaced it, flashed to stock with Odin, the TWRP and finally updated his phone to UVMC6

Nice thinking! Unfortunately, the sgh-t989 does not feature a port/flex cable. The microusb connector is soldered directly to the MLB.

What do you mean by that statement? Unless you have the international version, S2 should be the same as sgh-t989....

Suspect enigma was referring to a friend with an int'l s2. Regardless, the microusb connector is connected to a t989 main logic board in my stock t989d. ==> t989/t989d needs to have microusb connector desoldered and a new one soldered in place if it it to be replaced. The microusb connector is part of the main logic board ass'y and not a flex connected subass'y.

What rom are you trying to install, and what rom are you trying to restore?
Also when you try to flash a new recovery are doing a full reboot or just rebooting the recovery?

would be happy to restore any working rom at this point. if i could simply reboot into twrp 2.5 it would be a huge improvement over cwm 6.0.3.1 >> at least then I could access my twrp backups.
as it is now, i can create an md5 checked complete backup (of a borked system) and restore from md5 checked backups. for some reason I am not able to "run" flashable zips; just restore (or advanced restore) backups from external_sd .... this seems to have the ability to restore some of the partitions needed ... i.e.,
/boot
/system
/data
/cache
/.android_secure
haven't seen any /preload as of yet. maybe all that's missing? all partitions need md5 sums though
have you tried mobile odin to flash a recovery, kernel, rom
Plz flash new recovery with odin.
Download cwm lastest version here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40441169
I still using ok.

mobile odin does not work for the hercules
update: cwm 6.0.3.1 advanced restore & mobile odin & microusb
No usb
Local solder wizard balked. I unsoldered and removed the microusb connector. Don't have another to upside down type connector handy.
____________
No way to install apps
Though I cannot run a terminal or any program, {because installing a zip fails everytime}:
backup with md5 sums works
restore with md5 sums works
backup & restore to external_sd works
So if somebody can send me a complete, rooted, cwm 6+, or nandroid of any working t989 hercules rom, I should be able to copy it and restore a complete working system.
Before I forget, need to find out if there is a partition that needs to be excluded from backup and or restore. Seem to remember that one partition contains unique, sensitive phone, vendor, and service_provider info. Will edit when I can locate the specifics, (unless someone has that info handy; knows how to protect their privacy; and wants to pm or post their hercules backup)
_____________
without a working sytem, how do you run mobile odin?
mobile odin sounds great as would any working terminal. Have got the apk. now what? Only thing seems to work on my cwm 6.0.3.1 screen is backup or recovery. (mounting and formatting partions also works)
Is it available as a cwm6+ backup archive that can be restored into a system running mobile odin?
I was attempting to change my Galaxy Nexus from Cyanogenmod 10.2.1 to cm 11 (current stable release). So, I did the following:
Created a Nandroid backup, saved it to my laptop, and deleted it from my phone as after creating the backup I had almost no free space. Before deleting it, I did test it and confirm that it worked.
Downloaded the CM ROM and gapps from the CM website
Verified their hashes.
Copied them to /sdcard. I didn't think to verify their hashes again. This may well have been a mistake.
Used TWRP v2.6.3.0 to wipe the phone and attempt to install CM. A message appears: "Failed." Here's a sample output (note that the output falls off the right-hand edge of the screen and there seems to be no way to scroll it to make it readable):
Code:
Updating partition details...
Installing '/sdcard/cm-11-20150626-SNAPSHOT-XNG3
Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check: no MD5 file found.
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:Error executing updater binary in zip '/sdcard
Updating partition details...
At this point, the phone won't boot. It goes directly to recovery.
To recover, I thought I'd just copy over my Nandroid backup. But, I can't use adb in recovery. I tried to use fastboot to flash my nandroid backup, but the format seems to be different, and I wound up with a phone that, when attempting normal boot, gets stuck on the Google logo until I remove the battery. I do have access to recovery still.
How can I get something bootable on my phone? I just want to restore my Nandroid backup. (And maybe see if I can figure out why CM-11 didn't work.) I can't find any way to copy arbitrary files to my phone.
Solved
This guide enabled me to resolve my issue. The steps I took:
Downloaded the latest stock ROM for my phone
used fastboot to flash it following the instructions on the linked post (which involved unzipping things and whatnot)
Booted into the new system and restored /sdcard from backup
Copied the latest Nandroid backup to /sdcard
Restored the Nandroid backup
Tried to install CM 11 again (this time without deleting the backup from my phone). It failed, so I restored again and am giving up for now.
I have a problem with my TWRP backups created for 32.3.A.2.33 version. When I restore them, the phone restarts once and in the next boot int goes into recovery directly.
I have flashed:
E6853_32.3.A.2.33_1299-1511_R3D.ftf
Boot and recovery from:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/z5...ting-xperia-z5-z5p-variants-drm-keys-t3437902
And works perfectly, backups creates correctly from recovery, but when I try to recover them doesn't work.
The problem seems to be in system partition , data partition recover with no problems.
Any suggestions?
I have the same problem.

Is dm-verity turned off in kernel? If not this is the reason why. You need to backup system image instead of backup files from system partition like usually in TWRP.
Can you try to make backup and restore with this recovery?
flash with "fastboot flash recovery lineage_twrp_recovery.img"
To boot into recovery power off phone, wait 5-7 sec then press power+vol_down until it vibrate.
Select "System Image" to system partition backup.
I am using orangefox recovery, make backup with miui 11 stock rom.
While play around with custom rom, and wanna restore backup to get few apps item, it's error in wiping vendor
My error message while restoring vendor
"e2fsdroid -e -S /file_contexts -a /vendor /dev/block/mmcblk0p62 process ended with error : 1"
"Unable to wipe vendor"
I tried to restore all items, and restore vendor last. It worked fine in restoring, but my phone can't boot. It show fastboot mode.
Any ideas what happen ?
Read around on internet, some said u need to disable lock screen before backup ?
me too. I stuck at mi logo
If you'll get ever some weird error in OrangeFox Recovery just simple reboot it to recovery again. In menu you have that option. Than try again...
Some super tip: DONT EVER TRY TO FLASH MIUI ROM/FIRMWARE UNDER RECOVERY!!!! Use MI FLASH TOOL!!! You can brick device like you two did . Dowload fastboot MIUI ROM and flash it.
Dont restore apps from backup lool. Use app like Titanium backup to backup/restore your apps+data.
Good luck
