I spent a lot of time trying to compile it myself only to discover that tun.ko is not needed! It is compiled into stock ICS AT&T kernel. Just install OpenVPN app and it will work out of the box.

Source code .zip is available for download on opensource.samsung.com. Enjoy
Edit: Apparently I screwed up when I extracted the contents of the zip Sammy posted. There is way more stuff in the source .zip than just kernel sauce. There is platform sauce too, which should allow developers to modify and compile other parts of the firmware besides the kernel. OK devs, have at it!
Do you believe in magic?

this code is junk
I've been trying all day long to get a kernel working, they compiled fine but no-go, I end up on boot freeze or bootloop, I've tried messing with the config file all day long, does anyone have any ideas why?
I think this open source code is junk, at least for now. There wasn't an official announcement from Samsung so this could be code from back in the days, the instructions also ask you to use an older arm compiler from 2009...
Damn it, my phone is bricked now.
I just found out how worthless my apps are without root. This touch whiz has forced me to lpp.

I've had the same problem since yesterday - the size of the compiled kernel doesn't make sense. I picked up a second phone (I have 2 now) and am wondering if there's a way to extract the stock kernel from it

Probably, and I rooted my phone yesterday by using a galaxy s2 kernel. All I needed to do after that was to reflash a stock kernel, however, I blew it away to root the phone..so catch 22
I was planning on compiling a kernel from source, but like zedomax saw, the compiled binaries didn't work and put the phone into a bootloop. I guess I should have warned him, though at the time, I thought I was doing something wrong (first time doing anything so involved with an android device).
Now, I've an stock Epic 4G Touch sitting next to my frankenrooted device from the other day...if I can get the stock kernel off of one onto the other...viola, proper root access.
I'm in the exact same boat you two are in: bootloop after trying out my self-compiled kernel from Samsung's source code. If anyone gets a hold of a working kernel, care to post it somewhere so I can at least have a working phone again?

lol, samsung just blew us by this time, those open source files were like not open source somehow.
Is there a way to get openVPN on this phone. Ive seen a few roms for other phones that have it, but ive read i need some tun.ko driver and im not sure if theres one for this phone?

Going to have to wait for a kernel that becomes available that includes tun.ko support. None of them do yet.

Hi there.
Okay im looking for a working/stable ICS rom/kernel for my Xperia Pro that has working VPN. Eg. Tun.ko
I am trying to use Onavo Extend on my Pro but it says no VPN support.
I have tried to get the tun.ko through tun.ko installer, but I have had no luck with this. It creates the tun file but it has nothing in it. I have also tried Open Vpn but that creates its own VPN files.
Sony really failed with ICS
So any help will be greatly appreciated :fingers-crossed:
Does no one know? lol I really don't feel like going back to gb: (

they didnt fail, its just not as stable as GB, thats why they've made custom ROMS on ICS

Lol i have tried 2 kernels and 2 roms now. Acronium with the Ultima Kernel and CM9 with the CM9 Kernel and neither of them have the VPN support.
The acronium with Ultima was supposedly suposed to have the TUN drivers included but it unfortunately doesnt work.
I dont know which other to try so I just need a lil bit of help Please
Hi!
As a lot of people out there, I'm really waiting for one thing: a cifs.ko kernel module to allow my ouya add CIFS/SMB network shares.
It should be interesting to compile it, because we could have all our stuff around our network (in my particular case, on my NAS).
I found out, that there is a possibility to compile it from the Ouya kernel's public source: https://github.com/ouya/ouya_1_1-kernel as it has the cifs code on github, so I supose that it shouldn't be hard to compile it (I'm not so good compiling the kernel).
Is anyone working on this module?
I'm waiting for this module aswell
So... nobody is working on it? :crying:
I'll whip up a kernel with support tomorrow.

I have a question...
is it possible to install cif modules without use a custom rom?
Ive tried to add some features to tytung kernel (SIO scheduler) also incrased the OC to 1.5ghz and after i successfully compiled the kernel and added the zimage back to the rom im using , it seems that im not able to use the new things i added , the kernel has saved the changes since i get an update version under About Phone/Kernel Version . Can anyone help me to figure out what am i doing wrong

its bcmdhd, if you are using tytung's that rom uses bcm4329 which is a different wifi module
