Hello All,
I am having bit of an issue with the CyanogenMod 9 Alpha. I have successfully installed the ROM and everything is running fine until I try to use Google Maps. I can not get a GPS signal. I know this is a normal issue with ICS ROMs. Has anyone else had this issue with this ROM and know of how to fix it.
Thanks
This should help:

Hope this helps !
You have to flash back to a GB Gingerbread TW Touchwiz rom and get a GPS Lock then while you have the lock reboot the phone and flash the ICS aplha 3 normally
DONT TURN OF GPS flash regular fomat/system,fomat cache and dalvik then flash alpha 3 , then flash gapps and you should be ok
Okay, thanks everyone. I didn't know I had to do that old trick.
I am having some issues finding the touchwiz rom so that I can try that method. Do you happen to have the link?
Thanks

Can ODIN EL29 to the phone using a one click if u like, its rooted so you can still regain recovery etc easily - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Use an app like superbackup to backup your contacts, sms, call logs and use the full one click that wipes data so u dont have any issues going from CM9 (4.0) back to EL29 (2.3)
Best not to flash roms from ICS but if u know about flashing the El26 cwm then Calk's EL29 stock which is missing is mirrored here by me - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24256853&postcount=2

A Question on CWM Recovery and 4.0.4...
Hey all.
I've given CM9 Alpha3 3 good test drives, and each time, it's completely obliterated my clockworkmod recovery back to the locked-down stock recovery.. which is INSANELY annoying. Is there any way to avoid this from happening? As in, are there any decent kernels which will retain CWM recovery on my phone whilst using a 4.0.4 ROM?
Thanks in advance for any help which anyone can provide!
they just released a new kernel with ACS built in, you might want to give that a shot.
Having run my i747 as rooted stock for some time, I'm curious about custom ROMs (such as latest stable Cyanogen 10), but the process seems onerous and tedious. I don't want to reinstall and reconfigure apps and repopulate contacts each time. Yet I read that some are regularly switching among ROMs. Are they spending days doing what I noted above or are there alternatives methods?
If there are threads regarding this I must have missed them in my searches of the site. If there's a detailed xda wiki, that would be helpful.
You can read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839 it's got all the info you need to instal custom roms there is even a section on how to reinstall all settings and apps in 10 min. You can use titanium backup in the play store to backup and restore all your apps but on cm10 and aokp roms I think it's best to reinstall apps through google play store one at a time to see if they are compatible. Gmail syncs all your contacts so once you set up your email you get them all back to your contact list on your phone. It gets easy after your first custom rom just make a back up with cwm or twrp first and you can always revert if you don't like it. Good luck

Get titanium backup, new feature: create an update.zip for all your apps. Basically it puts your apps into one zip, you flash it and everything is on your device first time you power on
Edit: you need cwmr for this

Ah, that's interesting about update.zip, which is same name as for OTA updates I think.
I have TB Pro with auto update, but haven't looked at new features in a while. I also have CWM and use ROM Manager to boot into recovery. Does the backup include the configuration/data for the apps? And this would include live wallpapers? What about contacts and photos?
And, if I should wish to return to rooted stock ROM and all settings/apps, that's with nandroid recovery?

You create your own zips so anything on tibu that's there can be in the zip. Data as well I believe. You can find the option if you hit then list at top right with the check on it. Should be in purpleish letters.
If you wish to return to stock just restore a backup and your good.

In reading the 10-minute flashing thread, someone noted that custom ROMs that don't format the data partition can be flashed from stock and simply rebooted, but I can't determine which of these ROMs preserves the existing data partition, such as CM and AKOP. Can you offer any advice regarding this?

Most ROMs require clean wipe when coming for another ROM/stock.
As for which rom preserves the data partition I have no idea, I just generally use tibu. I don't mind the 15-20 min setup considering all the work and hours that go into making the rom

Agreed! A full data wipe may be a small hassle, but you'll regret not taking the time to do so when you encounter problems with your new ROM as a result of a dirty flash.
The more you flash and become experienced with the process, the quicker and easier it becomes. I'm new to android and flashing, but in the last two months I've learned my way around and love it.

So, having dropped phone and -- despite wrap-around case -- shattered glass, I've sent it into Samsung for repair and purchased another identical one, which I've set up like first but have not rooted. Samsung may reset phone in for repair, but even if not, I'm realizing I could simply wipe everything and start from scratch, rooting and then flashing ROMs to see what I like. No data or config stuff to back up since unrooted phone takes care of that.
Where might I find a comprehensive discussion of all current custom ROMs and reviews of them. The threads for specific ROMs are numerous, but I'm looking for more of an overview and features/issues comparison. I keep running across ROM names in threads I've not seen before.
Thanks for any favorite thread links.

Go into recovery mode(home, power, volume up)
You should have twrp 2.3.1(team win recovery project) now, when flashing a new ROM always:
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Factory data reset
Wipe system(ROM)
You are now good to flash your custom rom
Hit install
Find you zip with cm10 on it(wherever you placed it on your phone) and touch it
Swipe to install
Wait for finish
Hit wipe dalvik/caches
Now find your gapps that you downloaded on goo manager
Install
Wipe dalvik and caches

I have Rogers S3 which is the same as the AT&T model.
I've tried multiple times to flash CM10 on this phone with no luck.
I'm able to root and I've followed all the steps from multiple sources and still can't get it to work.
Once I wipe all the cache's I find the CM10 file, when I go to install it, it fails to install. Not sure what to do. Says installation aborted with a lot of other code I don't understand.
Please help.

I would try a different ROM, now that you know how to, try out a few and see how you like them. Cm10 in my opinion isn't the most stable or best ROM out there.
Good ones to try are task650 aokp, paranoid android, and maybe even one of the touch wiz jelly bean like dragon origins or hellfire they are all great ROMs. All with 4g working of course.

CWM, and I've tried a couple different versions all saying they are compatible with my phone.
Are you running nightlies or stable CM10?
Im running stable and it flashed right out of the gate and works flawlessly..no camera issues, no MMS isses, LTE works etc. I came from Task650's AOKP JB4.1.2 to this no problem. Just make sure you flash the proper G-apps.

I had the same issue with several roms it was frustrating to say the least, and on top of it I was having issues with the one rom I could flash
I discovered it was the version/type of recovery I was using wasnt supported (I guess an old version of clockwork mod)
I installed goo manager and after some confusion pressed the menue button and let it install the twrp recovery (which I like better actually)
I was then able to follow the instructions in this thread to get it to work.
I was also able to get the LTE to work (called 4G now) -also on rogers

Okay, so STILL can't get this working.
I've re-rooted, and verified. I installed goomanager as well as TWERP. Still unable to install cm10 zip file.
In goomanager I select available roms and it says there are none, which is weird because from the youtube videos I should be able to see cyanogenmod right?
This is driving me nuts, not sure what else to do here.

FORGET IT! I give up. After my many attempts my indicator light was not working properly. Downloaded the factory stock rom and started fresh. No choice but wait for Rogers/Samsung to release Jelly Bean.
Alright so I'm new at this and haven't managed to brick my phone yet so that's a good sign.
As far as I've learned the process is Root>Recovery>Rom Flash, at least generally.
I rooted it successfully, but when I try to install recovery with ROM Manager it lists only one S3 with a bracketed cell phone provider I don't think I have. So I ditched CWM and went to Goo Manager but when I try to install that, it just hangs on some download page telling me its about to start.
So I'm going to assume the recovery thing is pretty easy to sort out and move on to my next question.
My S3 is unlocked, but I am under Koodo, which is an extension of Telus. My phone model is a I747M, not an I747. As far as I can see they are identical in hardware and software, but I'm really wondering what ROMs I can install. I've researched but didn't find much, and I don't want to blindly flash a i747 rom onto a potentially different phone, and risk anything.
Oh and PS any ROM with the vanilla android (like on the google phones) will do.
Thanks.

Hello Noob (I mean that kindly, I used to be one)
I'll help you with what ever you need. I'm Canadian and on Bell i747M. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll reply as soon as I can. Hopefully I wont be too confusing. I'll just try to break down all your questions in a point form.
First, i747 and i747M are almost identical. With the latest 4.3 ROMS there are differences in the bootloader that will make data not work on your phone. For now, stay away from any stock 4.3 ROM. AOSP ROMs (CM10, Task650) are fine.
Recovery: Through Rom Manager you will want to download the recovery titled "Samsung Galaxy S3 (ATT) " The AT&T version of the S3 is commonly shown as D2ATT(i747). This recovery will work for you. I have had a problem with TWRP myself recently being stuck on the download page. There is another way to install TWRP, but it is a bit more difficult. Try CWM first and if you like I will give you instructions for TWRP.
ROMs: If you want the most common and most stable Vanilla ROMs for your phone you are gonna want Cyanogenmod or Task's ROM. They are very similar with a few different features. Beware, if you ask questions in Task's thread you will be told it is an ATT ROM only. It does work on the i747M though.
Latest Cyanogen: http://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=d2att

Awesome, I appreciate the writeup. So I flashed recovery successfully (ROM Manager doesn't seem to have d2att anymore so I used ODIN).
I'll probably go for Cyanogen mod tommorow, I'll post again if I have any questions.

CM is a good ROM. There should soon be Kitkat versions available. You will be seeing nightly updates when it does come around. Before you start flashing, you should learn what a 'Nandroid' is. You can take a Nandroid backup in CWM or TWRP. Always save these to an External SD card. If anything ever goes wrong with your ROM, you can just re flash the Nandroid backup and be back to where you were the day you did the backup. The farther you get into flashing the more likely you will need these. Before doing your first Flash, do an Nandroid and copy your photops and stuff off of the phone. When jumping between Stock and AOSP roms, you will need to do a full wipe and will lose what you have not backed up. Be sure to sync contacts to Google....this is the one that has screwed me the most.

Be sure to sync contacts to Google....this is the one that has screwed me the most.

Alright, so I have CWM v5.5.0.4, which from what I understand is pretty outdated. It was probably just me following an outdated guide and forgot to look up an updated version. Will I need to update of will it cause any problems? I already backed up my phone on 5.5.0.4 with Nandroid.
Also I feel like I'm misunderstanding the procedure of flashing a new rom. So I downloaded a cm-10.1.3 zip which is is the latest stable build on android 4.2.2. This has an .img inside so this is the rom. I use CWM to flash this onto my phone correct? (Once I figure out if I need to update CWM)
Lastly whats the deal with Gapps? I downloaded the CM Gapps for 10.1 from their wiki. Is this the only way to get Gmail, Maps, and the Google Play Store onto the phone?
From what I understand I think I can just use odin to flash, correct? If so I'd probably prefer that because its the most familiar and noob friendly.

I wouldn't use Odin. It really will only become necessary if you want to flash back to complete stock.
You do want the latest version of CWM installed or you will run into problems flashing. You can get this 2 ways.
1: through Rom Manager. You will find your specific CWM with these steps. a-Recovery Setup b-ClockworkMod Recovery c-Hit menu button to left of home and pick 'Show All Devices' d- Here scroll until you get 'Samsung Galaxy S3 (AT&T)' D2ATT. e- Click Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Allow permissions for root. Ignore the touch option unless you want to pay for it. I can teach you the free way.
You will now have the latest CWM
You can download the latest CM-10.2, it is in release candidate stage and is extremely stable. They have been working on it for months. It will give you 4.3 (The good kind, not the one I warned against). After downloading a ROM, you leave it zipped exactly like it is. Do not extract it, just move it to your SD card. You will also want Gapps. Gapps is necessary because it is Google's own software that is legally not allowed to be built into ROMs. It must be installed separately. You can find those here. They help you know which to use with chart depending on which Cyanogen you use http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Gapps. Again just move the zip over to your internal.
With these 2 zips transferred to your phone you are ready to start. Before you do, make sure you have transferred all your pics and stuff off of the phone. Also be sure to save your contacts. You can now boot into recovery. You should notice recovery version 6.0.4.3. Volume button scrolls menu, Power button selects. You will want to do a Nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong. I know you did one with CWM 5.5 but should do another just to be sure it is with current CWM. You can delete the other one later.
Goto - backup and restore
Goto - backup to external or /storage/sdcard1 (i put both because im already on 4.4 and may have different menu than you.
Let this work and when done continue to flashing ROM
Go to 'choose zip from /sdcard'
Select CM-10-xxxxxxx.zip
After this completes you will do the same with Gapps.zip
After completion of both files you will need to factory reset your phone. Flashing AOSP over Stock will cause boot loops if you do not.
Go back to CWM main menu and select wipe data/factore reset
After completing this go to wipe cache partition and select this.
Finally you want to wipe Dalvik cache. you will find this in CWM under main menu /advanced/wipe dalvik cache.
Upon completion of this you should have CM10 4.3 running. Just exit CWM reboot phone and when booted follow setup instructions.
Let me know if you get stuck somewhere.

Alright cool. So through Mod Manager, there was not d2att, there was only S3(Metro PCS) which I thought was a bit odd. I found a way to flash an updated recovery via terminal emulator so that went well.
And your steps were very well written and concise. I'm now running CM without a problem.
Thanks for your help!

Cool terminal emulator was that other way to do it. Hope all is well for you with this. Welcome to flashing. As another tip, if you are going to flash a lot, there is an app called Titanium backup that is well worth the $5 it costs. It saves all your apps and data and after a clean wipe you can just reinstall all your apps in one step. For example after a wipe you will not lose your Angry Birds levels if you restore your titanium data. It's worth a look.
Hey guys, i just upgraded from our t989 to a moto x and i decided to start testing roms out on the t989 since its not my main phone anymore, i only flashed about two roms and i have already done something wrong, flashed Aokp Milestone first, nothing wrong here enjoyed aokp back in 4.2.2 days. now i have always wanted to use Jedi mind trick but i was worried about the problems with it, so i made a backup of Aokp and Wiped data/wiped cache and flashed darkside wipe then flashed Jedi mind trick and rebooted. it got stuck at the splash screen like the details in the rom said but now when i try to make a backup, wipe data, cache, flash Jedi mind trick, flash darkside wipe it will freeze, i have tried flashing Cyanogenmod 10.2 and still freezes, i decided to just restore to stock but Odin 1.8.5 will not find my Device when it goes into download mode. right now i am trying my aokp Backup it had been going Fine for awhile but it looks like it might have Froze on /storage/sdcard0: mounted. any help please? i dont think i could google this problem.
Edit: now when i boot into cwm it says Can"T open /cache/recovery/last_log twice.
plugged it into a different computer and got odin working, could anyone show me the correct way to install Jedi mind trick? also it comes with that kernel so it can be overclocked to 2ghz right?

Not sure about specific jedi issues, its been inactive a long time.
But for any 4.1.2 touchwiz roms ...personally I flash twrp 2.5.0.0. 2.6.0.0 is probably OK, but any higher can cause issues with 4.1.2.
Also, you should use the infamous wipes. Darkside is outdated. I believe infamous wipes are based on dark side, but they've been updated for jelly bean. Darkside wipes stopped being updated at ICS.
See how that works.
Oh, and for more current 4.1.2 ROMs, @Rushing has a few.
