Switching custom ROMs - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Having run my i747 as rooted stock for some time, I'm curious about custom ROMs (such as latest stable Cyanogen 10), but the process seems onerous and tedious. I don't want to reinstall and reconfigure apps and repopulate contacts each time. Yet I read that some are regularly switching among ROMs. Are they spending days doing what I noted above or are there alternatives methods?
If there are threads regarding this I must have missed them in my searches of the site. If there's a detailed xda wiki, that would be helpful.

You can read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839 it's got all the info you need to instal custom roms there is even a section on how to reinstall all settings and apps in 10 min. You can use titanium backup in the play store to backup and restore all your apps but on cm10 and aokp roms I think it's best to reinstall apps through google play store one at a time to see if they are compatible. Gmail syncs all your contacts so once you set up your email you get them all back to your contact list on your phone. It gets easy after your first custom rom just make a back up with cwm or twrp first and you can always revert if you don't like it. Good luck

Get titanium backup, new feature: create an update.zip for all your apps. Basically it puts your apps into one zip, you flash it and everything is on your device first time you power on
Edit: you need cwmr for this

Ah, that's interesting about update.zip, which is same name as for OTA updates I think.
I have TB Pro with auto update, but haven't looked at new features in a while. I also have CWM and use ROM Manager to boot into recovery. Does the backup include the configuration/data for the apps? And this would include live wallpapers? What about contacts and photos?
And, if I should wish to return to rooted stock ROM and all settings/apps, that's with nandroid recovery?

You create your own zips so anything on tibu that's there can be in the zip. Data as well I believe. You can find the option if you hit then list at top right with the check on it. Should be in purpleish letters.
If you wish to return to stock just restore a backup and your good.

In reading the 10-minute flashing thread, someone noted that custom ROMs that don't format the data partition can be flashed from stock and simply rebooted, but I can't determine which of these ROMs preserves the existing data partition, such as CM and AKOP. Can you offer any advice regarding this?

Most ROMs require clean wipe when coming for another ROM/stock.
As for which rom preserves the data partition I have no idea, I just generally use tibu. I don't mind the 15-20 min setup considering all the work and hours that go into making the rom

Agreed! A full data wipe may be a small hassle, but you'll regret not taking the time to do so when you encounter problems with your new ROM as a result of a dirty flash.
The more you flash and become experienced with the process, the quicker and easier it becomes. I'm new to android and flashing, but in the last two months I've learned my way around and love it.

So, having dropped phone and -- despite wrap-around case -- shattered glass, I've sent it into Samsung for repair and purchased another identical one, which I've set up like first but have not rooted. Samsung may reset phone in for repair, but even if not, I'm realizing I could simply wipe everything and start from scratch, rooting and then flashing ROMs to see what I like. No data or config stuff to back up since unrooted phone takes care of that.
Where might I find a comprehensive discussion of all current custom ROMs and reviews of them. The threads for specific ROMs are numerous, but I'm looking for more of an overview and features/issues comparison. I keep running across ROM names in threads I've not seen before.
Thanks for any favorite thread links.

Kernels and flashing

Noob here.
I had a question about kernels. What the hell are they and how do you flash?
I just put Miui on my EVO. I really like it but there are some issues with Bluetooth and also voice messages not wanting to send or receive. Plus the front camera issue.
I saw some others flashed a different kernel to fix some issues so I was wondering how to do that.
Also mentioned was doing a Nandroid backup... what is that?

Take the zip you want drop it in your sd card use rom manager recovery and install new zip nanroid is under recovery mode as well
Flash a kernel- place the zip file on the root of your sd card [not in a folder], wipe you cache and dalvik cache, then click install zip from sd card, then select your file
Nandroid [a backup]- from the main menu, select backup and restore, click backup, done.
Always do a backup before flashing a kernel because it may not play nice.
Once you've got the basics down. Just start with one of Netarchy's (my preference) and try a few to see what seems to flow best with your phone. I've had the best luck with Nets 4.3.1 more havs nosbc. Good luck.
To wipe the cache and dalvik cache, is that listed under the recovery menu or do I have to do it some other way? What is stored in the cache?
Also hope I got this right, but I can only use AOSP kernels with Miui? I'm not sure what is different about AOSP. Is Netarchy AOSP?
Unfortunately, I don't believe Nets has any AOSP kernels. Sorry, I don't have a good kernel recommendation for Miui. I'm a MikFroyo fan, tried a lot of roms and kernels, but haven't given Miui a try. I like my 4G. Mik is fast and stable, so I've stuck with it for a while now. Depending on what recovery your using, to wipe the dalvik cache, you should have that option. In clockwork its under the advanced i believe and in amon its under wipe. Don't really know what is stored in cache, but any time you make a change or flash something new, always good to wipe the dalvik cache.
What is AOSP versus whatever else is used?
in the evo world, every rom you'll find is either AOSP or Sense based. Aosp roms are custom made roms built straight from android source. Miui and Cyanogen are the most popular AOSP roms. Sense roms are basically the rom sprint uses that people have hacked to make it faster/personalized.
Do the kernels have to be specifically for the EVO?

AOSP- Android Open Source Project ; closest to bare bones Android [Think Cyanogenmod]
the other is Sense- Think stock HTC Evo, roms like MikFroyo, Azrael, ect

I believe so. Make sure you're running a stock kernel with stock rom aosp kernel for an aosp rom.
Nandroid
Nandroid backups are performed in custom recovery. They essentially backup the entire "image" of your current ROM into the "Nandroid" folder on your SD card. The beauty of this is that you can take a nandroid backup, flash a ROM and, if something goes wrong or you don't like it, you can restore via nandroid and return your phone to a previous state.
No one has still answer his original question...
Android relies on Linux version 2.6(the kernel) for core system services such as security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model. The kernel also acts as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the rest of the software stack.
So basically, it is what allows for better management between the rom and the actually hardware. For example, your rom could manage how many applications are running and using up cycles of your processor, but your kernel will determine how your processor elevates to the needed speeds for the ongoing task. Kernels are important to keep your phone secure, stable and longer batteries

CWM disappearing?

So I am just editing a post I made as I figured out the problem. However, I have a new weird issue.
I just flashed CWM. I remember reading something recently about taking the battery out of the phone right after flashing so the stock recovery wouldn't overwrite CWM. I did that, and got into CWM to fix my copy/paste issue. However, I just restarted the phone, then turned it off again to try to go back into CWM and the stock recovery is back again.
What did I miss? I can't seem to find the info about ensuring CWM stays on my phone.
Thanks!

You should have twrp 2.3.1(team win recovery project) now, when flashing a new ROM always:
Wipe cache
Wipe dalvik cache
Factory data reset
Wipe system(ROM)
You are now good to flash your custom rom
Hit install
Find you zip with cm10 on it(wherever you placed it on your phone) and touch it
Swipe to install
Wait for finish
Hit wipe dalvik/caches
Now find your gapps that you downloaded on goo manager
Install
Wipe dalvik and caches

I've tried multiple times to flash CM10 on this phone with no luck.
I'm able to root and I've followed all the steps from multiple sources and still can't get it to work.
Once I wipe all the cache's I find the CM10 file, when I go to install it, it fails to install. Not sure what to do. Says installation aborted with a lot of other code I don't understand.
Please help.

I would try a different ROM, now that you know how to, try out a few and see how you like them. Cm10 in my opinion isn't the most stable or best ROM out there.
Good ones to try are task650 aokp, paranoid android, and maybe even one of the touch wiz jelly bean like dragon origins or hellfire they are all great ROMs. All with 4g working of course.

Are you running nightlies or stable CM10?
Im running stable and it flashed right out of the gate and works flawlessly..no camera issues, no MMS isses, LTE works etc. I came from Task650's AOKP JB4.1.2 to this no problem. Just make sure you flash the proper G-apps.

I had the same issue with several roms it was frustrating to say the least, and on top of it I was having issues with the one rom I could flash
I discovered it was the version/type of recovery I was using wasnt supported (I guess an old version of clockwork mod)
I installed goo manager and after some confusion pressed the menue button and let it install the twrp recovery (which I like better actually)
I was then able to follow the instructions in this thread to get it to work.
I was also able to get the LTE to work (called 4G now) -also on rogers

Okay, so STILL can't get this working.
I've re-rooted, and verified. I installed goomanager as well as TWERP. Still unable to install cm10 zip file.
In goomanager I select available roms and it says there are none, which is weird because from the youtube videos I should be able to see cyanogenmod right?
This is driving me nuts, not sure what else to do here.

[Q]Might switch ROMs, CM10 to Paranoidkangdroid

Hello all,
I am on an AT&T GS3 running CM10 right now. What I want to do, is well, switch to paranoidkang droid (for the customizations, and group chat), what I'm wondering is how I can do this while wiping all the apps on my phone, but keeping the photos and contacts?
What I'm thinking is I have to
store my photos on my computer
sync my contacts with my google account
make a nandroid backup of my phone running cm10
boot in the CWM, press wipe phone
flash paranoidkangdroid and the 4.2 gapps
Someone in the paranoidkangdroid said that you have to be running either
a) cm10
b)AOKP
Then to flash the paranoidkangdroid rom over it? Is that true?
Thanks

[Q] SGS3 T999 - Personal Data, Apps, and New ROM(s)

Hey guys,
Love reading and contributing to this forum.
Question, I am currently running stock ROMs for my tmo SGS3 T999. I was thinking about switching to another slimmer ROM so I can further get more performance and juice out of the thing. Right now I'm running the Root66 latest 4.3 ROM and it works well.
So, one I was considering was the SlimRom (Here). Knowing that there might be issues with my data not importing into this ROM, what is the best way to preserve this as well as maybe import from stock to another ROM? Is it as simple as taking a Titanium Backup and importing it? Or, should it just acquire the old data and use it? If I decide to go back to a stock ROM, will my old data be retained even after using a different ROM for some time or will it get overwritten?
As an example of why I'd like to save/import my data:
For instance, I have a game that I've been working on for months. I'd like to preserve this game state data on any ROM I decide to flash.
Lastly, what high performance and customizable ROM would you suggest and does it require a non-stock recovery (i.e. CWM or TWRP, etc.)?
Thanks guys and keep up the good work!
Thanks,
Johnathan

If you intend to go back to Stock at some point then take a Nandroid before flashing SlimBean.
As to the Game Data etc, Titanium is your friend. Do note, if there is a System app that you wish to keep data then convert it to user app before taking Titanium Backup. Titanium won't be Able to restore the data for a System app. Particularly when the app was a System app on Touchwiz and SlimBean is AOSP.

Apologies for the noob response, but I suppose that Nandroid is a backup software? I also assume that SlimBean and SlimROM are the same.
Can things like Messages, call logs, email, etc be migrated from a Titanium Backup?
If I convert any system apps to user apps, would that include Messaging to keep txt's etc. as well as Phone for call logs?
Looks like I'll have to root my phone even though I've used Root66's ROM last so I can backup my phone... hmph.
Thanks,

Nandroid is not a Software. It is a Nand Backupyou create when booted into a Custom Recovery. You will have read here on forum or on Wiki if you need to know more.
SlimBean and Slim Rom are one and the same. To the best of my knowledge, Slim Bean is the Official Name.
Emails and messages can be migrated via Titanium. However best if you take a backup of these inside the respective apps. Typically they allow you to back on a PC. Do so for double effect. I do believe Kies has an ability to backup Call Log. But I personally have never backed up Call Log so am not sure. I don't think you'd have to convert Messaging and Phone apps since you are backing those details as above.
OK, thanks for that.
So, if I want to keep data from System Apps, they need to be converted to User Apps, does this include the Phone and Message apps so I can retain the logs and txt's?
Thanks again,
Johnathan

Got it. Thanks again.
BTW, any experience with the PAC-man ROM (Here) or AllianceROM (Here)?
Seemed like a decent one since it include features from multiple other ROMs.
Thanks,
Johnathan
I have tried PAC MAN Rom just because I wanted to see what the Unicorn (AOKP) is upto. Realized it hates my favorite Kernel so left it. Honestly never tried Alliance Rom. I like AOSP and have no love for the touchwiz framework. My Current Combo is SlimKat Rom and KT747 Kernel.

I was looking at SlimKat.... they have the d2lte download that replaced the d2tmo. Would I need CWM or TWRP to implement this?
Also, that is the Kernel compared to the ROM?
Thanks for your help,
Johnathan
Yes you will need either CWM or TWRP or something similar such as Philz Touch.
I tend to replace the kernel of Slimkat with KT747. Nothing wrong with the Rom's kernel. Its just my preference.
Ok,so for any ROMs that are not stock-based, a different recovery is needed other than stock.
Why did you choose that Kernel over others? What does it offer that suits your fancy?
Using the XDA Developers app... OH YEAH!!!
Sounds about right. Do note, even for Alliance Rom, you'd need Custom Recovery such as CWM or TWRP. For terminology sake, any recovery that's not stock is called Custom Recovery.
I like KT747 because of the ease and flexibility it offers for profile based Overclocking or Undervolting. See the link in my signature for Undervolting just to give you an Idea.

That's cool, I'll check it out.
Apologies for all the questions... just thought that I'd get them all out.
One last one, I think... AllianceROM, I've seen several that have specific device models that it should work for... I can't find much about the t999 being supported with AllianceROM. I suppose I can't assume this would work with this model, correct?
Thanks again,
Johnathan
When it comes to Touchwiz based Roms (AKA Stock Based Roms), if it does not include your device, I wouldn't try it.
