Hi All,
So i have this little problem with GT-N7100 i bought not so while ago. Everything was perfectly fine until one beautiful morning AF in main camera stop working (all of the sudden, phone never dropped or damaged in any other way). Think that i've checked everything. Tapped screen in few places to change focus point, macro mode, back to AF mode, camera settings reset, device full factory reset...nothing changed. (have dslr and know photography basics but camera in this phone should be idiot proof anyway) I even went a bit further...first i've changed stock rom to custom one, then bought new camera module on ebay and got it replaced myself. No difference...symptoms are the same. I'll send it back to samsung but first i would like to know what is wrong with my phone.
Q1: Are they any other components/modules responsible for focusing in this phone
Q2: Can it still be a software issue??
Q3: Is there any diagnostic software that can scan my device??
Symptoms:

Blurry videos all the time

Unlocked: Yes
Provider: Three Ireland

Android version: 4.1.2

camera has it's own manufacturer dependant firmware, on note 1 for example there were 3 different manufacturers/firmwares...
not sure if that counts, but take this into consideration (especially when changing modules)!
also, i'm not sure if the firmware (the soc) is in the module itself or only beneath!

I've also got exactly the same problem on my MTK6589 Star N9599 phone. I bought it from Amazon and managed to get everything else like the IMEI and GPS fixed relatively easily in the engineer menu, but the camera is absolutely refusing to work. It just does not focus and everything is blurred and looks terrible. It seems to be set at a very close focus.
Surprisingly the front camera looks superb in comparison, the video and pictures are crisp and clear.
This would have been an absolutely excellent buy if it wasn't for this fault. Looking by the responses it looks like a hardware issue as well so the phone will have to go back.
Just FYI I'm running:
Android 4.2.1
Camera Main: ov8825_mipi_raw
I've tried several ROMs but it makes no difference. I think the telling fault is if you go into the engineering menu (using MTK tools) and then try to take a capture with the main camera it ends up crashing.
I'm gutted because I was doubting buying from China and thought I'd pulled off a bargain.
I got the same problem. My photo's are always blurred. How i can check if something is wrong with hardware?
I have this problem as well. was this ever solved?
I have the same issue with Note 2 LTE. Any solutions will be much valued.
No fix for this

My friend got the phone work perfectly before but after few apps installed, the camera got a problem which is there are few line cut cross the foto, the photo would be like the file attached.
After wipe all, the problem stills there.
The firmware is original and never rooted, is there any experience this problem?
Cheers!
Hi
Clear data, or factory data reset?
G.
I know of a least two other people with the similar lines on they defy camera, bu they only had a single vertical line, I thing it was a problem with a faulty camera sensor

yea, i think it is the same problem with linked one, but don't really understand why there is no problem with video taking, and some photo took before the problem comes also got those line on the photo. (There are no problem as all with those photo before.) It seems like the camera encode unit got some problems. (From raw to jpeg?)
As I'm trying to find the original firmware to re-build the system but I can't find it (The Hong Kong (east-asia?) firmware). Even if I found, should I need to root it first?
When activating the camera on stock rom, rooter stock rom or custom rom the camera will lock up the phone, screen will turn off and a battery pull must be done to get the phone rebooted. Doesn't seem to matter the rom. Still the same effect.
Back story:
So my sister in law came to visit with her nice new shiny sgsII (t989). She got it from her friend who happens to be a tmobile salesmen in Seattle. She was told that the camera didn't work cause he downloaded something. But took it anyways (since he is her friend and she got it for free).
I thought I'd take a crack at it. Tried a factory reset. Same issue. Found that it was stock 2.3.5 and NOT rooted. Thought maybe a new camera app would fix it thinking the app would hook into the os/hardware and not the default camera.apk.... Same deal.
Last step I tried before coming here was to install a custom 2.3.6 ROM. It got to the standard camera screen but with nothing coming from the camera (black screen) and locked up before needing a battery pull.
I've come to the conclusion that her friend either tried to flash a different cameras firmware on the t989 or dropped it in the toilet OR BOTH!
What do you guys think the issue is?
Why would he want to flash different camera firmware?
I'm stumped. She is here on vacation and that phone is her camera.

how does one flash a camera firmware?
So this happens on every camera app?
Don't know how one would flash the camera firmware. It was an educated guess. From the info I was told "he downloaded something and now the camera doesn't work" is the only thing I could conclude from that.
On the Samsung Vibrant people would use alternative modified camera.apk or use custom kernels to get the front facing camera working but never seen of anyone changing firmware before.
I have tried technically 4 different apps. one from the stock rom, 2 from the market. PUdding camera and the other I don't recall off the top of my head. They both did the same thing. Which brings me to believe it is either the driver (which could be fixed by a different kernel) or the hardware. Come to think of it, it wasn't rooted when she got it. So I doubt he flashed anything. Unless he odin'd something....
Just got done talking the the previous owner. Turns out all he did was installed some official Google apps from the market place when this happened. Doesnt seem like he did anything wrong. He told me of two other issues that started at the same time as this one. Video playback will reboot the phone and web video reboot as well.
Got a workaround for the video playback: installed mx player and set it to render A/V in software mode. Not the best solution, but it works.
Online videos crash. IE any site with heavy flash. Updating flash didnt solve it nor an uninstall/reboot/reinstall.
That's where I'm at. 1 step forward 2 steps back...
Hate to do this, but..
Bump
Hi everyone,
After updated to 434 my dial tone disappear and camera focus (the square thingy) does not turn into green to lock the focus, it do nothing when i touch the screen, no focus sound also
Anyone faced the same issue after updating? Hopefully it just a OS bugs.
Does KA06 Xperia ZL Revolution Rom fixed this?

Please anyone can confirm this? just want to ensure whether it is a software bug or related with hardware. FYI, i have test harware using *#*#78.....(forgot the code), everything seem to work fine.
This is my newly yesterday bought unit, so i think i can get 1 to 1 replacement if it have any issues.

i have done PC Companion repair feature actually, i think this feature is same like factory reset. Still the problem appear.
I think it is OS bugs.
I tried searching the forum, all i found were people telling each other to take out the battery or send it back to samsung...
if you find a link that covers my problem, i humbly apologize please direct me to the thread.
okay:
i bought an s3 off kijiji (craigslist equiv) the camera does not work.
I click the camera app, app loads, picture is black, then a dialog box saying camera has failed pops up, app crashes. Repeat.
So I bought a new rear camera, i put it in and guess what! same problem.
I tried every software thing i could think of (post and pre new camera). I tried different roms, CM/PA/STOCK Mod, no luck.
I tried going into the firmware service menu with a touchwiz rom and making the two firmware numbers match as in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2006128
I tried going into app settings stopping the camera app and clearing the cache.
Now i am out of ideas and i seek better men/women to help me.
I have a new camera, i just bought, and the old camera.
oh before i forget: I saw the old camera work only once since i bought it, it loaded up randomly and was all glitchy green lines running down the picture. It loaded up with the front facing camera part which to me worked fine, then when i went to rear camera it did the glitchy ****.
sorry if my post is hard to read, im tired, and frustrated with this thing.
the phone is sitting here all dissassembled waiting for the next step.
are there any diagnostic tools i can dl that checks the motherboard and each camera (front, and back) individually?
nothing huh?

Sounds like hardware failure to me man,. sorry to say it. Have you used odin to bring you back to full stock? did the device come rooted?
There are 2 tests you could do (though they're probably the same). This requires you to be on a stock ROM.
From the dialler, enter:
*#0*# General Test Mode
*#7353# Quick Test Menu
Then, the choices are obvious.
Look at the board closely. Examine the traces on the board coming from the camera connections and where the camera connectors plug into the board for any signs of a white powdery substance. Dendrites will form on circuit boards and short out the associated electronics. If you don't have a warranty, it would be worth it to get some high grade isopropal alcohol and give the board a good rinse. You may even scrub the affected area with a good clean tooth brush and then flush it again. Let it dry thoroughly and then reassembly it. It would help to get some of that canned air and blow it off as well. I've had that work more than once on delicate electronics that have gone south.

using odin to bring back to full stock is the only thing ive yet to try.
When i got the phone it wasn't rooted.
I guess the last thing i will do is try the new camera with ODIN stock.
i really doubt it would make a difference.

that is the first thing i did actually. i was afraid it may of been water damage. the phone is taken apart infront of me right now. I dont see any sign of white spots. it looks clean as a whistle.
I really dont understand why its still failing even with a new camera.
DO any of you know weather If only the front camera fails will the entire camera app fail?
Also the front camera and the proximity sensor are tied together as one unit. and the proximity sensor works fine.
also ive mentioned that ive seen the camera work once. so ....I just dont know...
It's either a hardware problem (other than the camera itself), or it's a software problem. I would revert to stock & run one of the hardware tests I mentioned previously. That should rule in or out a software cause.
Update:
I used :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2363882&highlight=unroot
to unroot and go full stock...
still nothing.
i did those tests from *#7353# Quick Test Menu
it fails on both rear and front camera..And the REAR camera is the new one?!?!?! wtf.
does anyone know if one camera does not work they both dont? (since i replaced my rear camera, it may of been the front camera this whole time that didnt work.) i wish i was rich so i can buy another phone to test my hardware with.
do you think its a mainboard problem? - i guess thats all that is left.....

I experienced the same problem last few days. It started the next day I rooted the phone. I tried all the ways I found on the net, none worked for me. I even formatted the internal drive. Problem was still there.
Then I flashed Task650's AOKP rom and surprisingly the camera started to work. So I guess it maybe as stated in the forum, the driver, for some reason, was not in the correct folder. I guess flash any 4.2.2 rom will fix the problem. I am now running on liquid rom. Hope this can be a little help?
ive been on 4.2.2 PA

out of pure desperation i tried this method.
and it did not work same old message
either
gallery has failed
failed to open camera
worth mentioning:
when i am in stock rom, there is a feature that detects your eyes to make sure the screen should stay on. It works. It says it uses front camera to achive this functionality but...alas my camera does not work.
What can i do to help you help me.
im totally at a loss for words i dunno what to do
I was experiencing the problem last week on Stock Rogers ROM 4.1.1.
I tried restarting, battery pulls, formatting and taking apart the phone to disconnect/reconnect the camera.
Nothing worked and I was convinced it was a hardware problem.
As a last resort I flashed the stock Rogers 4.1.2 update and the camera started working again.
I flashed back to 4.1.1 and the camera stopped. Not sure what was causing the problem though.
If your on the new 4.1.2 bootloaders and running 4.1.1 the rear cam won't work, flash the old lk3 bootloaders.

It looks like a software problem
I had the same problem.
Rear and front Camera gave SOMETIMES "Camera Faild" error.
It looks like a software problem which uses the camera or the flash.
Many users saying that the problem is resolved after signin out from Skype.
For me the case was the Flashligt software. You can try to find out which software can be the cause.
I hope this is the problem and you all will find out the software which causes the error.

No solution Camera failed Samsung s3
I still have a problem with my Samsung i535 s3 camera failed .
I've tried all the options of the application manager app stop clear cache , install 2nd app app to run CAMERA and nothing. I even replaced the physical camera from another vorking S3 i747 and again nothing , reset wipe cache system start from scratch and still no go.Changed proximity sensor still no go, another SS3 Basically had to swap parts and test it to no good
Don ` t have a micro sd card , and I spent 3 days at various forums to find out how to fix the problem .
S3 is not under warranty and service shop could not help me. I deleted all the apps that use the camera as Skype and flashlight and again nothing , Camera failed .
Otherwise my S3 i535 runs on stock rom not rooted and hasn ` t been updated stilruns on 4.1.2 didn ` t go for 4.3 update . Everjthing else Works fine ekcept camera.Somebod

Yup, does sound like hardware issue. Just FYI, Samsung current charges are exorbitant, and they in some countries FORMAT whole data even for smallest of things, irrespective of hardware or software issues (f***ing idiots). So, please beware of the 2 points.
