Wouldn't it be nice if the home screen settings (folders etc) can be saved and restored if needed. Otherwise it's a pain to re arrange everything manually after a factory reset or something like that.
I use Go Backup Pro and it saves homescreen info flawlessly. It saves your folder settings as well. It costs money and you need to be rooted to my knowledge.

If you're running a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)... when you restore a backup, it will look just as it did. Also, if you use NOVA or APEX Launchers, there is "backup/restore" functionality. APEX even has separate "Backup/Restore Settings" and "Backup/Restore desktop data"
thanks! all these requires rooting right?

Hi.
As more new builds come out, obviously I would like to try them and keep my phone up to date, with the current build.
But it does get a bit tedious having to reinstall and reconfigure my phone each time.
Is there a good way to backup and restore the data after each build to help with this.
I do see the 'backup' and 'restore' options in the Haret loader, is this what its for? Or is there an Android app, or can I just install the system without clearing the data?
Options, opinions or suggestions.
Thank you
for apps you can use astro.
option button/ tools/ app man
i use ADW launcher which has its own back up settings/layout
havnt figured out system settings yet. they are *supposed to* back up with google (you check the box every time you set up), but i have not seen that work.
Hey guys,
I'm about to updated from Mikfroyo 4.4 to 4.5 and I was wondering what things I should back up using Titanium Backup? I would like to keep settings, texts, and application data if possible.
Thanks.
First, I typically will back up everything. System + User apps and data. I do a nandroid as well. The selection comes on restore for me.
For a restore, first I restore all user apps + data (not the one with system data). I will go through the list and look for anything I might not want to keep. For example, moving from Fresh to Myn, I wouldn't restore Fresh Updater. You can use the restore all user apps batch -- it'll give you a screen where you can deselect.
Next, I will selectively restore system data. Again I use the batch mode, but deselect all and opt in what I want. Most of the things you might want to restore will be highlighted in green. For example, I always restore Browser (or Internet, can't remember which it's labeled), as that gets all my bookmarks, cookies, and settings. There's one for SMS in there. There's one for Bluetooth parings and WiFi access points. Rosie settings are usually to restore too, and that will give you your home screen layout.
Thank you very much.
I have the premium version of Titanium Backup which I have been using for over a year with much success.
I have one query which would make it really awesome if it can be accomplished.
I normally only use it when doing a ROM upgrade. When I am getting ready to upgrade, I delete all my old backups, do a new set of backups on all user apps + system data, and wipe and flash the ROM. Then, when I'm back inside, I go into the Market and download Titanium plus the Pro unlock, and restore the backup.
(First of all, is this what you guys do? restoring all system data shouldn't screw up the features of the new ROM from the old one, right?)
The question is: Is there any way to have Titanium run without having to first go into the Market, find the app plus the unlock, download it, and install it? i.e. If I could just run it straight off the SD card, or install it straight off the SD card without having to use the Market.
Ideally, it would be even better if I could have a startup script on first run where it just restores the full set of apps + system data after I've flashed the ROM.
Is this at all possible?
download or extract from a rom the titanium.apk, put it on sd-card an install the apk after flashing new rom and it´s done.

Never restore system data as it can and has causes issues. It is only advised to restore user apps and data never system data.
As for your other question no not that I know of. Most roms worth anything already include TIBU so all you have to do is install the pro key and run it.
Start Titanium backup
Goto menu/more/create update>zip
scroll down and hit "create update.zip"
when you install a new Rom just use "add another zip" when in Rom manager or 4EXT recovery
Goto SD card and select "update.zip" from root of SD card
Hope that helps

Thanks, that's great!
Do you know if it is smart enough to bundle the Pro unlock into the update.zip? I opened the zip file up and there only appears to be 1 APK in there.
Would it be difficult (or even possible?) to manually adjust the update.zip so that it includes the Pro unlock APK?

restoring
So I'm returning my nexus for a replacement today. Some kind of battery issue that makes it keep turning off every night:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34923533#post34923533
On restoring, if I understand right, I'm going to move my titanium folder back to the new nexus to the SD card area.
Run my TiBU apk and just restore my apps and associated files.
If I understand right, I Should Not restore my system files right? (Although i did a lot of customizing i was hoping could come right over).
Then when i have it all customized again, I'll back up the new system and hopefully it won't have any issues anymore.
Just an android noob talking it through, sound good?
I'll be installing the rom and CM10 again of course before doing this.

Sorry, i take this opportunity to ask a question i had in mind for a long time: what exactly do you mean by "system data"?
I mean, can i restore stuff like "Settings", or "Wireless network", "Bluetooth associations", "SMS", "Wallpaper" and stuff like this? Is really annoying to have to re-customize from scratch the CyanogenMod settings and similar stuff, everytime i do a full wipe...

You can restore these, they're not system level files (i.e. make the system run)

Could you tell me a couple of examples?
I'm sorry but i really can't figure out which ones are the system apps. In my opinion, even Settings and Wireless networks are system apps.
Do you mean all the services, frameworks, sms and contacts apps and stuff like this?

I think he's talking about app names that are red-colored while you're doing the backup in Titanium BackUp.
Am I right?
Cheers

I've easily rooted and flashed several different phones.
The problem I always run into is restoring my apps, themes and settings.
Every time I install a new ROM, I lose all that. My apps are backed up via google. I've tried Titanium Pro...made backups, but can't for the life of me figure out how to easily restore everything. Is that even possible?
I was hoping the steps would be:
1. Backup apps, theme, settings, data (phone logs, pictures, etc).
2. Flash new ROM
3. Restore apps, theme, settings, data
4. Enjoy
But my step 3 has always been:
Re-install all apps, edit settings, put apps on homescreens, put widgets on homescreens, forget data...sometimes it takes me a day or two to "remember" all the cool apps and settings. Am I just plain clueless, or does everyone suffer in this regard?
I do not suffer from this at all.
Use TB to backup and restore APP only, no data.
Use nova, apex, holo or any other launcher that allows you to backup and restore desktop shortcuts as well as launcher settings.
Use SMS backup to backup and restore text messages.
Restore data using TB one app at a time if you really need it, just be aware that restoring data may cause issues with your new ROM. I restore data for games only...

Titanium is a powerful tool, but not very user-friendly to the uninitiated. When you flash a new ROM, download titanium backup and the pro key (always do the key second). When you open TB, hit menu, then preferences, and scroll down to Backup Folder Location. Tap that and tell it to search the whole phone. After a moment it should find your backups. Select it, Hit Use Current Folder, then back out to the start screen. Hit the check mark in the upper right and when it presents you with your backup/restore options, select restore user apps. It's perfectly okay to restore user apps with their data. Just don't restore system apps with data (in fact don't restore system apps at all). As mentioned before, if you use a third party launcher, your homescreens should be saved as part of that backup (except for widgets, which you'll have to add back yourself). You'll still have to set your settings back and reapply any themes, but you're most of the way there.

Cant back up theme.
Data restore works better when rom base is same, from one 4.0.4 to another. If switching bases, avoid data and setting restore
You should have no problem restoring data from downloaded apps thou

Can someone please tell me how to finally save widgets, data & home screen settings when switching between ROMs? I use Apex launcher and it does not allow me to restore my exact settings when a new ROM is flashed. I have read in various posts that Titanium Backup allows this, but there are never any instructions or what feature you are to look for in titanium to make this possible. The ROM i use now requires a clean flash every time. I am two versions behind because it takes 2 hours to restore my device back to my liking because I can't just restore my previous settings. I know there is some app/solution for this. ANY assistance in helping me accomplish this (including step-by-step procedures) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

-I have restored my Apex settings successfully after having backed up with Backup & Restore, "Backup Apex settings" and "Backup desktop data". Did this not work for you?
-Rom Toolbox has a "Backup Phone Data" feature which is pretty good.
-Also, I have Dropsync sync my backups with Dropbox so that I can restore easily from the cloud. I just have the folders in which several of my apps store their backups designated as "synced folders". Some apps can be set to backup automatically, and I have a reminder set to do the others manually.

Apex keeps standard widgets (sometimes) in their respective places. But I use desktop visualizer to add customized tiles. Underneath the tiles is another app, smart shortcuts, holds multiple apps in place. Apex does NOT restore these. this is what takes 2 + hours for me after I have to flash. Titanium backup lets me restore the apps, but this is the most taxing and laborious part.
Rom Toolbox and Titanium are supposed to have a similar features, but I never get the specific command or function keys. Also, the Jedi ROM i use does not let you do "dirty" flashes. So I am not sure I can even flash the data over the new version.
