i used to have the Xperia X1, X10 and the Xperia Arc and those phone have a lot of support from devs, lots of ROMs available. im planning to get the Xperia Ion to replace my Glaxy Nexus but lack of support and development is holding me back. why do you guys think that the ion doesnt receive support from devs like its smaller brother the Xperia S? is the ion worth it for replacement of my Gnex? (lots of support and backed by Google)
Lack off dev work is mostly likely due to the bulk of ions having and unlockable bootloader.
The ion has 5 roms, 4 of them needing a custom kernel.
From my LT28
I had the option of buying an Xperia Ion or a Galaxy Nexus but I chose ion.. I see we have very less ROMs bt why not we try make some?
I'm learning from xda and one day I might have the ability to create some appreciable mods.. We all deserve it

Hey i have Sony Xperia S , i heard that android 4.1 and 4.2 jellybean are going to be directly from Google (vanilla android) is it right ?
does the Sony Xperia S going to be as a nexus phone or every thing is just a lie ? and i also read that first Google wanted to do this project but then get dropped off ? please i need answers
Xperia S was selected as an AOSP device but was dropped off due to some legal issues. The good part is that sony took it over from there. The device was successful during the experiments as said by the head of AOSP. No it is not going to be a nexus . Yes , we can see a vanilla android on our phones in the near future.

Sony took over because Google doesn't have the proprietary drivers required to make it function 100%
( that's what I think)

Just my opinion, but why would you want or need "pure" AOSP ROMs when you already have amazing AOSP based ROMs like Cyanogenmod or AOKP? To me this is and always will be just an experiment, again just my opinion

I believe if they get a Sony version of AOSP it should be a fully working version, no bugs. Then FXP & AOKP can use the Sony source for their custom versions.
I think Sony already holds rights to use drivers from various manufacturers. Google would have to pay, but Sony already did.(I think)

Didn't think of that, you make a good point there.
Maybe they will even make it working for locked bootloaders, so that could be a benefit of Sony working on AOSP for XS

Not very likely. Sony has locked bootloader on devices due to contracts with carriers.

Hello friends,
I own a Xperia Arc S and would like to upgrade. But not shure whether to get ion or xperia s
Xperia S have good ROM support over here but kinda looks thick compared to Ion maybe coz of curved shape.(after owning arc s everything seems to look fat )
Xperia Ion has bad ROM support but looks are better than Xperia S ( according to me)
So i need your help guys in deciding.
I went through many threads but couldnt find my answers.
Any help is appreciated
Thank You

Go for Ion :good: and I'll happily welcome you to the family bro
and also, the ion is lacking of custom ROM and custom kernel because most of the Xperia ion user have the at&t version (Lt28at),some got Rogers version and international version (both are Lt28i) and some got Lt28h (without LTE,like me in my country lol xD )
thanks for replying guys...in what terms ion is better than xperia S?

I'm have been looking around for a new phone to replace my Samsung Galaxy Ace and came down to these two phones i.e. Xperia S amd Xperia Ion and I'm really torn. I can't make up my mind at all.
As you all are users already, I would like to get some insight into these two phones, the things I'm looking into are :
1)Developer community support (custom roms and stuff).
2) Battery life under moderately heavy usage(I won't mind charging once or twice daily)
3) Screen- contrasts, blacks, whites
4) I think the Camera is basically the same? Right?
5) All the reviews I've read have complained about the capacitive keys on both of them. How is it in reality? Is there a learning curve to it?
Any input would be highly appreciated. No trolls please.
Thanks.

I think all ions are locked bootloader so therefore the development is limited

1)Development of XS is more than ion
2)ion's battery is bigger than XS , it must charging once a day if you use an android phone.
About screen and camera, i have not used ion, i dont know
the capacitive keys......i only want to say it's not hard to use

Yes, I think ARNOB is right. It can be unlocked I think.
ARNOB, how's the Ion?
Sent from my GT-S5830 using xda premium
At&t ions cant be bootloader unlocked, the rest can.
Ion has bigger screen and sd card support. Developer comunity is a lot bigger for xperia s. Capacitive buttons work fine on the ion(on mine i need only one press). Personally i was going to go for an S but choose the ion instead.

Well, I've used a galaxy ace as well as both Xperia S and Xperia Ion. So here's my conclusive answer.
1. The community is very big for the Xperia S but in terms of mods and everything, ion is no way left behind.
2. Xperia Ion HSPA has a better battery imo compared to the LTE variant(due to 4G) and Xperia S.
3. Xperia S is said to have a larger dpi resulting a sharper display though I couldn't really feel the difference. While the Xperia Ion has deeper blacks, larger screen.
4. Camera is fully identical.
5. The capacitive buttons for both have no issues. But you might need a week to get used to it as its quite different from Samsung.
Hope it helps

Hi Team,
I've broken my HTC One X and am considering purchasing a Sony Xperia SL. I understand that it is no longer a top of the line device, however all of the new phones that are are 4.7"+ which is too large IMO. It seems that the S has a fairly active dev team, though I'm not so keen on flashing new roms so often these days (have been using the same rom on my HTC One X for about a year). Having said all that; are there daily driver ROMs available for the SL that I can stick with for an extended period &/or how does the update roadmap for the device look; is JB likely the final update etc.
Thanks in advance,
Try Xperia sp or zr

Thanks, I'd probably consider the zr over the sp but both of these handsets are still probably a bit too big, and they don't really have the 'premium' look.
Xperia v and HTC one mini are 4.3 inch so same size as Xperia s
Sent from my heart
I would recommend Xperia V but not SP (the 0.2 Ghz difference doesn't make so much difference, u can overclock if u plan to unlock bl and modify the phone with flashtool. The camera on XV is much better too)
Xperia V is even cheaper than Xperia S/SL in Hong Kong now (where i live)
The only thing that make V weaker is the 0.3mp front camera, while XS/SL got 1.3mp (SP seems got 0.3mp too, not sure)
Even XSL got 1.7Ghz cpu, the XV will be still much faster becoz the CPU on XV is snapdragon s4 but the CPU on XS is snapdragon s3
(s3 actually isn't that bad, it is just supposed to be a bit slower. but s3 actually overheat so much which will make it very laggy, s4 is much cooler)
but if u got money, XZ/XZR ofcoz
Xperia SL - a good choice
IMO xperia SL is a good choice considering the specs it has got that still many latest phones lack behind easily...
12mp camera, very nice screen and screen quality, hdmi port, 32gb inbuilt memory to list a few...
plus speaking of the developer support it has got a great developer support...
already got JB 4.3
Please give me a link for xperia sl jb 4.3 rom download
