I recently bought an HDMI cable to connect my phone on my TV to watch my movies there. The cable has another port where I can connect a microUSB cable so my phone will charge while it's connected to the TV. But it doesn't seem to do it's job because the battery actually loses more than it gains. I am pretty sure it is charging though because the red LED is on and the battery icon shows that it is charging. Anyone has this problem? How much battery you lose while connected via HDMI? I lose about a percent every 2 minutes.

If you are rooted you can try this:
turn poversaver on, run renovate gaming boost and keep screen on.
Now you can play games and charge battery, I suppose it will work on HDMI too.

Yeah, I don't think we're on the same page. But thanks nonetheless.

There's an app called Screen Standby which lets turn off the LCD backlight. Picture will still be shown on your tv and the touch screen still works. That should cure your problem.

Funny, I thought it was just me...
I am having the same issue. Tried to do a PlayOn episode and we couldn't get through a 30min show, before the phone got hot and the battery died. This despite the fact that the adapter has the usb charger being plugged into the adapter, too.
Isn't that why it makes you have the usb going to the charger AND the Hdmi to TV, so your battery doesn't crap out?
Yeah the external power was supposed to keep it powered, but it doesn't LOL. I don't get why there isn't an option to shut the screen off. That would cut down on a lot of the battery use and heat.

does turning the brightness all the way down help at all? i was thinking of buying a cable and did not know it did this. hmm.....
Which mhl adapter are you guys using? I have the Samsung one and never had an issue with overheating while watching movies or playing games.

I haven't tried turning down the brightness. I had it on auto in a dark room, so it's probably already low but I'll try it.
Mine loses some where around 10% an hour. I would have to time it. not terrible, but just the fact that it goes down bothers me. That it's with wifi. Worse if cheese with 4g.

Yes it does. At times if I play a game long enough it will be fully charged by the end and with movies it almost always does. I have yet to experience a loss in charge.

Hi
I have a few other normal micro USB cables and when I try to use them with the standard HTC plug, the phone shows its charging but the percentage never goes up. In fact it drains even though it says its charging. Why is this? I've tried two new cables with the official wall charger but I get the same. I really want to be able to use a longer cable.
Any ideas? If it helps I'm running Franco r11 kernel.

Not enough power coming from the power supply. Cable isn't the problem.

Well how can that be? I'm using the same HTC plug. It works with the white cable that came with the phone. But when a plug a different micro USB cable into it it doesn't.

I charge mine with a nokia cable which came with e7.no problem here.
all cables are the same, unless they are "charge only" cables (I got one like this for my Nvidia glasses)
it will not drain more than 500mA from USB. But the charging logic is acting weird sometimes so I think you just saw it glitching with other cable and not with the original one. It will drain with both if you use it in the meantime, try it.
Hmmm. I got the battery widget app which shows + mv when charged with the official HTC cable. When I plug in the other two miscellaneous cables the discharge rate is negative under the same conditions. Maybe its the kernel?

My phone currently charges with different USB cables.
I have a blackberry short cable (for when I'm at client sites) and I use my old SE cables to charge and even do file transfers..
Have you ran the charger test in the HTC Phone Diagnostics??
From my experience this phone is picky as hell when it comes to what charger it wants you to use. I ended up using the one it comes with. It charges the fastest.
Go to the play store and download battery monitor widget. Its really helpful! Shows you how fast it drains the temperature all in graphs.
My one x will not charge with a car charger for some reason. Even with original charger fine with usb from pc or mains charger.

I get the your phone is using more power than charge etc. Two cables from eBay and the same thing. Such a pain! I wanted a longer charger

Its got nothing to do with the micro usb cables, there has been another power management update that was released last week, so HTC have told me, as mine sometimes doesnt charge more than 23%-29%, but when rebooted it goes to 63% and sometimes takes 12 hours for a simple charge, but was told it can take up to 4 weeks for the networks to distribute it. Im waiting for it too as my software is still on 1.28.771.9.
Im on 3 uk so it will probably never happen, but im currently in dispute with them because of faulty phone.
Hi I'm having the same problem with a longer USB cable.
I have a 3 meter cable from ebay which I've been using to charge my Desire HD for the past year without a problem.
When I tried this with my new One X it will not charge. The charge light is on but battery level decreases. I've left the phone sitting with the screen off for a while, but no charge.
When I tried it with the USB cable that came with the phone it charges fine, even whilst using the phone, with the same wall charger plug.
I've tried it with the wall charger plug that came with the One X and the one that came with the Desire HD, both same results:
Desire HD charges with both short USB and long USB cable.
One X will only charge with the short USB cable.
Is there a quality difference in the cables, or maybe a length restriction?
My One X is running Stock Android 4.0.3 (1.29.206.11)

I've just bought another 3 meter micro USB cable of higher quality, this one stated it would work with HTC One series phones. This cable charges my phone perfectly. The software on my phone hasn't changed from above.
Somehow it seems the One X, and maybe all other One series phones, are particularly sensitive to the type of USB cable? I didn't realise this could be an issue!
weird. i would have thought it was the increased resistance in the cable that was making it charge slower/drain
maybe its literally the quality of the cable, better materials, equals lesser resistance over a longer distance, therefore why the new cable will work and the other doesn't?
hi
my phone charging too slowly about 2-3% in one hour and the charger dont warm at all
and When i connect the charger the phone say: Your phone is using more current than the charger is able to deliver. please power off your phone or close unsed applications

sounds like your phone thinks its charging from a usb and not ac when its charging from the mains open settings > power
under battery status it will say either not charging, charging (usb) or charging (AC).
if its saying usb then there is something wrong with the cable thats stopping it from showing s an AC adapter.

Have you tried a different adapter?
The cables could be fine, but your adapter/plug is defected.
Also, do as treebill said. Try checking in which mode (USB/AC/Not charging) your phone is recognizing as being charged.

I have exactly the same problem, I'm using official usb cable and adapter. I had tried other cables and adapters but same thing. My One X is not unlocked or rooted, and I'm with the last official rom 2.17.401.2 but it was happened and with previous rom 1.27.401.11. Even with switch off phone charging is very slow I try to restore my phone but nothing at all. Sometimes it's charge like it should but most of the time it's slow. Any suggestions or I have to go straight to repair center?

Ok.
Li ion batteries take 3-4 hours to charge. If its taking longer, there is huge current draw from the phone. Or, as you say, "no".
help me...
Are you REALLY sure your chargers aren't messed up?
I f**ed up the charger given with my One X(details below) and after that, my charger would only give me usb power instead of ac. I've been using this charger bundled with my Samsung P2 mp3 player that I got 4 years back.
We had gone on a trip where the room's fan rotation knob was missing, so the only thing I saw fit to change fan speed was fitting that tiny pin from the fan regulator in my AC Adapters usb port, which messed it up. Retarded I know, story of my life... -_-
Hey there, I faced the same problem. Having a blackberry Bold3, I tried recharging my OneX with the charger that came with it. BB charger charges my OneX WAY FASTER than the HTC charger that came with the phone. (1hour max for full charge) And battery holds an entire day too.
no one??
If you haven't rooted nor unlocked, and your phone was charging perfectly before, then I don't think it's a software issue.
It's either your charger or cable. If you have tried a different charger/cable that works well with other phones, then I guess you need to have your phone looked at.
Good luck

I have a pico projector and thought; surely this will work with my phone on the go. Obviously i didn't look enough at the mhl cable debacle.
So has anyone tried using a portable charger pack (powergen or similar) to run the cable?
(even as i type that sounds stupid; a device that can project movies bigger than most tvs and a phone more powerful than a spaceship can run on battery but not a cable??)
On the same topic there is a lot of talk of miracast (similar to widi) on the S3 is it anyway likely there will be a portable version i wonder. I get great use out of my belkin screencast but there is very little clarity on how the capabilities of the s3 will be utilised

Great, thanks for that.
Out of interest what sort of drain does it take? (ie. which monkey do you have and how long does it last)
If the drain is very low I would be able to provide power to the pico at the same time if I get a model with 2 usb.
Got the MHL working buy buying;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008YRG5JQ/ref=oh_details_o04_s01_i00
I like 4 usbs but it is a bit big.
Now I want to see if i can connect the usb power to my pico I know the voltage won't be 12V but still should extend the life. Any suggestions for a USB to 2.5 * 5.5 mm DC power plug??
I'm having a problem with my galaxy nexus.
After going over my warranty by a month,I started to suffer from the odd charging bug that seems common in GN especially after the 4.2.2 update.
I started with intermittent charging issues, sometimes it would charge, sometimes it wouldn't.
It then got to the point were it didn't charge.
After googling and searching through the internet I found this to be a common problem.
There seemed to be several fixes, change usb circuit board, bending usb tabs, restarting bootloader, flashing bootloader, new battery etc.
I can safely say I have been through them all.
I can still not charge my phone after; a new usb circuit board, and new battery. I did have a glimmer of hope with a flash of 4.1.2 Google factory image, where it started to start charging but then stopped.
In #*#*info*#*# under battery, it notices a usb or ac feed connected, and my computer registers that it's connected, and can enter fastboot and adb. But never says charging.
The one that concerns me the most, is when the phone was powered off, and I plugged in a charger, I would get a charging partition boot up, showing a battery with lightning bolt on it. I no longer get this.
When I plug it in to my computer,I get a connection tone, but then an item not working properly tone, and under device manager it shows item not working properly, and updating drivers doesn't help.
Usb hot wiring the battery, gets everything working, but it's very dodgy.
Do you have any ideas? Is there a protected partition for charging (that is available on boot)? Could that get corrupted? And can it be reflashed?
Any help is very much appreciated
Thanks

So... I'm not saying issue was similar but it's close. I started having charging issues yadda yadda... plugged in saying charging, sometimes saying nothing. Battery drain was ridiculous. With the phone off, it's show as charging but once turned on after hours it would show half charged. I have three batteries and a bunch of charges all the same issue. I swapped out the USB from a broken GN I had and still the issue persisted. Eventually, I saved my data and swapped out the circuit board for the one on the broken phone and all is well. Every battery I placed in the phone was charged... I get a full charge yadda yadda. I'm not saying it's a similar issue but it's close. You might be able to find a broken GN (screen, no water damage) for cheap on ebay and do what I did... just a suggestion.
Can you charge through the pogo pins? If you can, I'd highly recommend doing the touchstone modification.
I've had issues when I'd enable fast charge on several kernels. If you're using a custom kernel, disable fast charge then connect to power.
