CM10- Battery life fix - - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm a diehard CYANOGENMOD fan. I prefer to use an official stock CM rom because I believe in the work the CYANOGENMOD team has been doing.
Here's a snapshot of my screen about a minute ago.
It's pretty good, right? This is how I did it.
1. Go to Settings
2. Go to System
3. Go to Notification Drawer
4. Go to Widget Buttons
5. Check the Toggle Mobile Data
6. Press the home key to exit settings.
Now when you pull down the notification drawer you should have a Mobile Data toggle. When not using your phone, either to be on XDA or say, Facebook. Use this Mobile Data Toggle to turn off your phones DATA. This should insanely increase your battery life!

There are better ways to do this....
Disable auto-sync
Lower screen brightness
Disable wifi/bluetooth when not in use

No mobile data toggle, no lower brightness setting, gps on here is what I have...
This is not a fix but will help to use less battery juice thought.

Why not just use JuiceDefender? itll turn your data on and off on its own.
Screen go off ... Data go off
Screen go on... data come on...... no needless data toggling

Here's one from today. I haven't tried juice defender but if it's as good as this, then why not.
I prefer disabling Data when not in use because it saves me the time from messing with my phone : Flashing kernels, trying Scripts, etc.

I don't get it? Lol
No offence intended....but that's mediocre battery life at best.

My battery life is completely pathetic with cm10 and I have no idea why. I'll drop to 70% after only an hour or 2 with less than half an hour of screen on time. I don't ****ing get it. Its not my battery either... I have 2 identical Sammy batteries. Idk..

Your brightness is too high. Don't use auto-brightness. Toggle it from the drawer to set it to the appropriate brightness. Dimness has the best battery life.
Also, If you want, go the Menu>System Settings>Performance>Processor and set to a lower clock. It'll help regain better life, but u may experience lagginess on video apps. Try and test which is the best CPU for battery life/performance.
Good luck.

Nope. Trust me, I'm no noob. I've done all of this stuff. I use my phone the same exact way no matter what ROM I'm on. On the skyrocket 4.1.2 TW port, I was averaging 4 hours of screen on time. More than twice what I get with cm10. I disable data when I'm at work and not using it, and my brightness is always somewhere between 50-100%. I also play around with governors and governor settings and tweak them for battery life. I even thought maybe it was a rogue app but I've run cm10 without a single app installed and it still drains way too fast. I WAS getting great battery life with cm10 but with the last month and a halfs nightlies, its been atrocious. Lucky for me, I have 2 batteries.. but even with 2 batteries I use them both in one day. :-/

On 4.1.1 when my phone is sitting on idle it loses about 1% an hour. I've only had a couple of charge cycles on JB but the best I could do was 2 days with 1 hour and 45 mins of screen time.
My best on ICS 4.0.1 was 3 days and some odd hours but that was with about 30 mins of screen use.
I charge my nexus every night! But yes, I use it a lot! Twiter eat battery!
so what? Screen on time is where the battery drains..
These posts are so pointless.
If you could legitimately get 6+ hours of screen on time then I'd be impressed

For me (average 4½ hours screen time in 20 hour day) I have stock JB ROM rooted with stock kernel and battery auto sync auto brightness mostly cellular data and no Facebook or twitter apps. I don't use Google+ so really the only thing syncing for me is gmail.
I use autostarts to keep apps closed, and do turn data off when playing games (that don't require it) to prevent adds.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
That's pretty awesome battery life. Mine was similar a couple weeks ago but I must have changed something cause I no longer get a day or two of battery life.
Couple questions, can you go to your settings and under developer options look for the Apps" section, what are your settings? I feel like that may have something to do with it. But not sure. Mine are set to unchecked, standard limit, and unchecked.
And lastly, do you mind downloading CPU Spy so we can see what CPU state your phone is on the majority of the time?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Mine started off quite good at 4% drain overnight for 8 hours (totally stock). This morning not so good - 6% in 1.5 hours. Google now being the culprit perhaps? Because I put my home and work location in, it now gives me traffic reports. Problem is the route it says is always completely different to the route I actually take so its practically useless now, so I've turned it off... see how it is now.
I like the concept of Google now but for me its not a whole lot of use.

Oh I see what the deal is now. You DID turn off data at one point, that would be the reason why it was saving so much battery.
It's always set to auto. I don't use fb or twitter, and only use one active weather widget. I hope this lasts. I've since gone through another cycle and made it to five hours again. When I was on 4.0.1 I barely ever got to four hours screen time.
... Forgot to mention if it's of any help this is all on wifi... Hopefully I'll get close on data, my signal seems strong though.

Does this seem like OK battery life?

I'm running kyanROM with minimal use. Took it off charger at 6 am listen to Bluetooth streaming I'm my car. Driving to school. Out at 12, barely no use at work and its at 53% I have an extended battery. Usually I listen to music all at work and by the time I get home at 11 its under 20%. I've seen people get 2 days out of theirs with over 8 hours of screen time...... something just doesn't seen right with battery life. Any ideas?

That is SUCH a subjective question to ask. There are so many different variables that can effect battery life. What apps you have installed, which ones were running. Seeing as you are not using a stock battery, it makes it a even more difficult question to answer. Personally, I'd be happy with those specs

May be you should do Battery Calibration and wipe battery stats at 100% Charge and test again.
It all depends on what is running and what you use, such as taskillers and synced items. But 15h is good battery life. I get about 11 but almost 3 hours of that is screen on time.
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Something is definitely hijacking your battery. Or at least those stats make that seem very likely. I would try another ROM and use the stock battery. Some(mostly all) of the cheap extended batteries are only really good for the first couple charges, for some reason they just can't hold one after that. Had a very similar problem on my captivate only to realize the extended battery was the problem. The stock battery on that phone ended up giving me over 4x the life.

Install Juice Defender.. i installed it when i saw my phone couldn't last more then 18h and now( well when i had it) i go push it 2-3 days on my normal use that i was doing.. just by installing Juice Defender.
also when WiFi is not around you should take it off.. and LTE takes a lot of battery life. just saying.
also when you go to bed on travel and don't have a charger.. Put it on FLIGHT MODE you will only lose like 1% of battery after 8 h of sleep
Install "GSam Battery Monitor"
it should help you to find out what process in Android System is draining your battery

Maybe u just got this issue:

Next time when you see a battery draining, check if you got that gsiff_daemon process running in background.
I "fixed" temporaly this draining issue by renaming the gsiff_daemon for gsiff_daemon.bak

Any battery life tricks?

I am currently running Sonic-Free rom. and i like it. but if i have to change it for better battery life let me know. is their a specific setting i should use, kernal with a certain setting in SetCPU, any times would be greatly appriciated. this thing is dying super fast!!! even loses charge while plugged in when screen is on with light tasking.
I am running CM 10 M1 and I easily get 18 hours on 50% battery with moderate use.
Sounds like you have other issues here... How is signal strength?.. What apps are you running? Have you looked at better battery stats or similar app to determine what is your culprit?

Ok i will get rid of it. its worked for me in the past, but that was on the HTC hero, evo, evo shift. i never had this issue on SII.
About JuiceDefender... it really depends on how you use your phone. I love JD since I go long periods of time without using my phone. By using JD I don't have to bother with turning data and wifi on and off manually, and obviously you save a lot of battery when they're off. I also kind of like the night tint that comes with their brightness control.
Obviously, the usefulness of JD is completely dependent on how you use your phone, but I wouldn't just rule it out. I personally have never gotten the kinds of screen time people around here seem to get... I get tops 3 hrs with 10% left with or w/o JD, but I still get over 24 hours easy using JD so I'm happy.

rogue apps, bad service area are 2 big battery eaters. But it really depends on what you do on your phone. If you use your phone like super computer it'll suck, where as if you read a book on your phone with a black background battery with last forever with a crap ton of screen on time.
Or it could be a bad battery or charger or bad micro usb cable.

I downloaded the Ktoonsez kernel today for my new S3(first android phone as well), but 1. It feels so laggy compare to my stock Kernel, and 2. My battery is draining like crazy! I when from like 94% to 88% in about 30 mins, and that was with the phone lock the entire time....
I also downloaded Flaux's Kernel. That one was real smooth, but it was also draining my battery a lot while the phone is also lock.
I'm currently using HighOnAndroid custom ROM and had to go back to the factory stock Kernel. I don't know what I'm doing wrong that I'm getting such horrible battery life using those two ROMs, when people are reporting such great battery life usage :crying:
.The battery needs to build a cache to reference and stabilize to show proper battery stats. Flash a rom and kernel and stick with it a few days. I'm using ktoonsez on aokp right now with excellent results. Even on stock roms I use ktoonsez kernel and get much better battery life via the kernel itself and tweaking the settings.
Also, if your saying the rom wasn't smooth I bet it wasn't the kernels doing, it works awesome for most. Of course there are some phones some things just don't work with and that may be your situation but it'd be rare

Well that could be anything, but ideally yes. Battery if very eradic after a full wipe and flash. Also try the app better battery stats, it will tell you if anything is causing your phone not to sleep, which would cause drain.

I'm getting the best battery backup now. Better than my previous Note. Average battery life is 25hours with wifi and sync always on and around 3-4 hours of calls.
Thanks for the replies.

they just turned on the lte towers around here and that has been a big hit battery wise. i can get a full day of use but will be down to nothing by the end if the day, with the regular 4g it was half that. power saver helps a lot more now

get Juice Defender Plus. It will turn off data when the screen is off and back on periodically to check for email. I can go all day with LTE on and battery is still around 30% around midnight.

This is what I'm getting on AOKP with Ktoonsez's kernel, is this about what I should be expecting?

Yeah, that's right about what I'm getting. And I'm switching between WiFi and LTE all throughout the day.
Stock battery. The battery life seems better than my Skyrocket.

Just un rooted and grabbed the latest OTA update yesterday. Spent the day reinstalling apps and getting great battery with light usage.
Installed a couple apps downloaded via LTE. Some Web browsing and twitter. Looking good.

The thing I hate is if I am just browsing in the play store the battery goes down really fast. Like a percent every 2-3 minutes. Is this common for others? But the gs3 battery life is much better than many skyrockets battery.

Battery Guru for snapdragons

Have any of you used this app? I think it's worth at least trying out. I've been using it now for a few days and it seems to have helped increase my battery life. A lot of times before I would get about 2.5 hrs of screen time and now I've noticed I've been getting almost 3.5 hrs...almost, but still good improvement nonetheless.
*It goes into learning mode for about 2-3 days before actually starts helping save battery.
It's free in the playstore, you guys should check it out if you didn't know about it already

Been using it for two days, after initial 2 days learning, and for me it has increased my battery life by a ridiculous amount. I work in an area with little to no service and my phone is almost always searching. I would unplugmy found around 5 am and would be at 30-40% by noon. Apon checking my phone for the past two days its been at about 75%. So I love it!!

Yeah usually I don't really believe in apps claiming to save battery now because none of them ever really worked for me. But this app is made for phones specifically using snapdragon processors and actually works, pretty damn good too.

It must have gotten better from when it first launched because it absolutely DECIMATED my battery life in the first versions! Maybe I'll try it again.
Admittedly, I'm running root66 MD5 and I'm getting the best battery life I've ever gotten without undervolting and the ROM has been extremely stable for me so I'm sticking with it for now... maybe my constant ROM flipping was messing up the app. I'll give it another shot.
I tried it for a week and it wasn't even doing anything at all...
Just get battery doctor from the market should do.

Also just so you guys know I was doing a lot of web browsing and watching a good amount of YouTube, plus playing a little iron man and plumber crack but did a reboot, which is why it doesn't come up on the battery stats.

Hmm...that's odd, works pretty well for me. Well if battery doctor helps you save more battery then keep using it. Just out of curiosity how much battery life do you get with using battery doctor?

4 hours? I've been getting 5 hours of on screen time with MD5, WiFi on all the time, playing Metropolis and Simpsons: Tapped Out...
Auto brightness on or off? I have mine turned off (the screen is plenty bright at one tick above base).
All I know is that I never came close to 5 hours until upgrading to MD5...

Battery Guru has been "learning my device" for 3 days now and it says I have 6 hours until battery savings begin. I'll let everybody know how it goes.

To be honest, I haven't noticed really any difference. I'll get some screenshots later tonight if you'd like, but overall, if there were any battery savings, they have been minimal. Notice my screen-on time in the original screenshot. I really am not a power user. I only ever have to charge my battery during the day if I've been gaming on it or if I have a rogue app chewing up battery. I usually go 12-14 hours and have 25-30% left with less than 2 hours screen-on time. I don't use task killers, however I reboot my phone daily before I pull it off the charger.
