Battery life on Slim Bean 3.1.0 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm still too laconic on XDA forums to post this in response to gmillz' SlimBean 3.1.0 ROM posting in Android Development, so here it is.
I'm getting the attached battery life after one day, one full power cycle on my new 1850mAh battery and fresh installation of the above referenced ROM. I'm running noop I/O and ondemand governor with the stock kernel built into SlimBean. I'm also running the screen on minimum brightness (not automatic). What else provides some useful background?

Here's my battery today on slim bean...I love this ROM

Since my phone "lost" my IMEi (actually, it was just not able to read it anymore), I flashed back to Stock Samsung 4.0.4. Before, I used SB 3.0.
And I can also report that battery life is much better now. Perfect example is a night in flight mode, which results in about 1% loss vs 6% loss @ SB.
As there are several guys I talked to which have perfect battery life with this ROM and I also had till 2.8 or so, there must be some misconfiguration. Or a battery draining app.

Where did you get the download for 3.1.0? I've checked there site and they only have 3.0 for the T989.

I've been running this ROM for the good half part of this day, and I must say, the battery is not as good as I hoped. Maybe I'll have to let it settle in, but CM so far beats this in terms of battery life.

I agree with the comment about stock being better than SB 3.0 and onlychevy's 3.1. It is a downer to realize most custom roms don't actually optimize for better battery life. I test the battery life by playing 5 minutes of youtube on 3g only to see how much is drained. On SB, 1% is drained for every 2 minutes of playback, and 3 minutes on stock.

WHOA it's rare to see someone say that the battery life is horrible in this forum. You should try a new fresh wipe and install, and try different kernels.
Try darksides super wipe then re install juggernaut ROM. Make sure not to run setcpu or any other cpu apps, I was having bad battery drain running setcpu.

i actually think those "battery saving" and task killer apps uses up more juice than saving ... i had juicedefender ultimate and i noticed my battery drain when it was enabled .. i deleted the app and ive noticed a great improvement on my battery .
Agree
I was also getting horrible battery life on the Juggernaut roms. I tried the bullet kernel, synergy, and faux kernels with all sorts of different ways to reduce battery consumption such as underclocking, undervolting, uninstalling bloat, and removing apps from startup. No matter what, my phone would always be dead by the time I came home from work/school (I'm usually away from home from 630am until 800pm).
I recently started using the DARKSIDE rom/kernel in the hopes that it would provide some better battery life and I am actually getting significantly longer usage times. As of right now after ~15 hours of time spent off the charger and with moderate use (~500 texts/day, XDA app, FB checking, random Internet usage), I have just under 40% battery life remaining. I must say I am very impressed with this rom and give the developer TDJ mad props.
So here's my battery life with Eugene's Macnut ROM:
Compared to this (Juggernaut 4.1 with ICS Ultimate Theme):
I run juggs with TDJ Darkside kernel, kernel makes huge diff

I am running Juggs 4.1 as well previously with the FAUX123 kernel and decided to try out TDJ's Darkside kernel. Wow, huge difference, highly recommend. I use system tuner app to adjust my speeds but main thing in system tuner app is to go into boot settings and set screen-off to powersave governor and max frequence to 800, 500 etc.
I also run easy bettery saver and that helps as well. Battery life is best I have ever had with my G2 and I got it first day it came out and have run most all of the rom's kernels on it. If you can I would suggest running TDJ's Darkside rom as well. I would but just don't want to reload again at this point.
DK
I'll try darkside rom and see if it fixes my battery drain problem.

Thank you for this, I wasnt aware of that, what do you use to change your clockspeed when your screen is off? I recently switch from an iphone and unfortunately battery life seems to be something I have to actually think about now. I know its a faster processor and a bigger screen so I get it, I just never had to worry about turning off wifi and things like that before. I currently am running beastmod 4.2 with darkside kernel. I have 9hrs on battery at 41% with 2 hrs and 15 min of display. Im not really interested in speed at this point so I thought setcpu was a good thing to use to underclock and use less battery. Can you recommend any good alternatives or should I not bother with setcpu type apps. Thanks in advance
On darkside... Not the current one but the one before it... I think it was version 1r2 or something like that. Battery is great, better than juggernaut. I have bluetooth and Wifi on all day

They gobble up a TINY bit more CPU (probably no more than 1% throughout the entire charge) at the cost of managing your data settings. It saves juice primarily when your phone is idling. It pings, it checks data thresholds. The main idea is that it turns off 4g/wifi when you're not using it, and back on when you are. This requires a little but of CPU, but you end up having a battery that lasts much longer.
There's never be a time when you're using your phone 100% of the time on battery. There's ALWAYS idle time.

Poor battery life with juggernaut 5.0 & darkside v1 kernal

its been 3 days since i rooted my phone for the first time due to battery life issues. the first day my phone lasted for 10 hours. after a full discharge and full charge I've been experiencing horrible battery life again on medium usage. only getting 6 hours of battery life. what do you guys think would be the cause of this??? everybody is getting better battery life and mine seems to be horrible still. I don't have any out of the ordinary apps running either. do you think i need a new battery?

I have never found juggs to be a battery friendly ROM. It's a power ROM. Better for gaming, shooting live video etc. If you want the 15 to 20 hour battery some are getting then switch over to darksides ROM DIGITALWARFARE. It's powerful enough for gaming just not like juggs.
Also usage plays a roll to. If your gaming for 4 stright hours don't expect the phone to last that long because no phone will. Running Juggs with darksides kernal is kinda doesn't mix.

Download 2x battery from the market, it's done wonders for my phone and i use it with any rom i flash. Not to mention i ran that same setup for quite awhile and the maximum time out of a battery i've gotten comes using juggs 5 and v1 darkside kernel.
I'm running Juggernaut 5.0, with Eugene's Streamline kernel. I'm getting about 17hs. I'm also OCD, so I play, and tweak every setting possible. I game a lot, and usually get about 6-8 with that. It depends on a lot of factors though. I agree though, it's kind of an oxymoron to use Darkside kernel with that rom. They kind of clash.....I guess you could say, as far as battery goes anyways. I had the same issue when I used that kernel. Just my experience anyways. There's a lot of setups you could go with, so. Best to just test everything once, till you find your happy place.

Your battery life also depends on a number of other factors as well. Do you have animations on or off? If they are on, turn them off. What brightness is your screen? I turn mine all the way down. How many widgets are you running? I don't use widgets. Is your phone constantly syncing with Facebook, Twitter etc? I only turn my sync on for Gmail and Google. Is your GPS on? I have mine off at all times. Do you stream a lot of music/videos? How many programs do you have running in the background? I make sure everything is closed or off except for the programs that need to be on. If I need to use a program/app I will open it, I don't need it constantly running shortening my battery life. Etc Etc.
I also recommend using the app Juice Defender. Yes it runs in the background at all times, but, it greatly improves battery life. I use it all the time and it's fantastic.
I typically have my phone on for 15-17hrs a day and by the time I go to bed I still have over 50% battery left. I am currently just on a stock ROM and not Juggs, but my results with Juggs were around the same as well, even with the Darkside Kernel. Peace

+1 I don't use juice defender on my device since I am happy with the battery life I get so far. However, I have Juice Defender on my wife's SGS2 with custom settings and her battery life has improved a lot. Before her phone would only last 10-12 hours with moderate use. Now she gets over 20 hours with the same usage.

ROMs themselves rarely ever have an actual impact on battery life. Most postive effects for battery come from the kernel, and negative ones from rogue apps.
Before you ask which kernel offers the best battery, it really depends on the requirements of the user and the phone itself. You'll just have to try a few.

I've tried many ROMs and Kernels with no success in the battery life department.
My phone charger died so I downloaded an app...Easy Battery Saver...my phone was still at 34% after 1 day and 7 hours. I was NOT heavily using my phone but still this is the best battery life I have ever experienced. I was always on the "battery saver apps are useless" team until recently.

Hmm.. thats strange. I'm on MMuzzy's ROM which is pure AOSP and I get around 2 and a half hours of screen time. And some people around the forums have gotten around 5 hours of screen time with different combinations of ROMS and Kernels.
I have tried numerous roms, if not all of them for the galaxy nexus, and there is a difference between roms, even using the same kernel.
I have been getting amazing battery life using Eclipse.

I used to get some awesome battery life. VZW + 2100mah. Typically 4 hours screen on time was normal.... now I'm lucky to get 1hr. I can't remember if it was the jelly bean update or the inclusion of Google Now.
Does letting the ROM settle really help? I have been getting terrible battery life out of my 2100mah. The battery just drains when the screen is off. No rogue apps, but this is a fresh install as of 24 hours ago

I wasn't going to put my 2 cents in but because there are so many complaints about this being in the wrong place, I just have to now.
I have tried many different ROM's and kernels and found there always seems to be the "right" combination sooner or later. Right now I am on AOKP w/Franco M6 and getting about 14 hours with 24% battery left, 2.5 hours screen time, mostly LTE and moderate phone use, best I have seen of any combo for me on this ROM. For CNA the right kernel for me was lean kernel. A little experimentation and patience and you will find that sweet spot soon enough.
Edit: the whining drew me to it, sucked me in so I couldn't stop myself from answering
If someone can get 4+ hours screen with mostly 3G, let me know. haha.

However as for battery life slim ROMs work great but I'm on jbsourcery built in trinity and I've definitely had worse d: the only ROM I've used that's had has battery is pa however they've had multiple updates since then so I'm sure its not horrible now

Get Most Battery Life Out Of Your GS2

I have lately been running tests of different ROMs and trying to get the best battery life possible! I have tested out these ROMs:
Jedi Mind Trick X1
CM10 Stable Release 4.1.2
AOKP Jellybean 4.1.2
Slim Bean Unofficial 4.1.2
When i flashed these ROMs i did a battery calibration (off app from play store NOT CWM). And ran them on FULL Brightness, GPS ON, BLUETOOTH ON, and running on Wi-Fi! I opened up netflix and watched multiple movies (same movies for each ROM)...until the phone went completely dead. Here are the results i got:
Jedi Mind Trick X1: 4 1/2 Hours
CM10 Stable Release: 3 3/4 Hours
AOKP Jellybean: 4 Hours
Slim Bean Unofficial: 5 3/4 Hours
As most people know the Screen does use over half of the battery. So on this test the screen was on NON-STOP for the amount of time you see above. And 99% of people will not have their screens on for that long at one time. So this is the WORSE-CASE scenario for battery life. I was impressed mainly with Slim Bean and Jedi Mind Trick did good as well.
You may get different results than I did. If you are using a ROM that i did not test or you tested one of these ROMs above and got different results please post below your results.
I hope this helped guys

Personally I have the best battery performance, regardless of the ROM, by setting up CPU profiles. Basically you can set one profile to limit the to 432 (or whatever you want) while the screen is off and 1500+ while screen is on. I use ROM Toolbox Pro for this and get really good results. If your interested just do some searching on ROM Toolbox Pro and CPU profiles. Just thought I would share

That's how it should be but in reality it's not. Sammy roms have much better battery life but then again that could just be because there are better power and memory management features on stock. It's the only reason I've been reverting back to stock since almost every other cm10.1 based roms have ridiculously weak battery life.

squeeze more battery out of it though.
Battery life, I've found it to be more or less the same, if not marginally better on stock.
@bushako - How's battery life on MIUI mate? Heard it drains battery more than other stock based ROMs?

I actually ended up going back to stock based Rom. The battery life wasn't as bad as I had thought, it got me about 6hours screen time. Don't get me wrong MIUI really looks gorgeous but at the expense of performance, especially at this stage since there's quite a few bugs that needs ironing out and also because MIUI and xposed framework use the same setup they are incompatible and I'm use to lower DPI. I might get back with signs of improvements.
Also, I found that Perseus kernel is not compatible with aosp and that so far the one that does work is neak and redpill.

With the same app installed and same setting on my daily use. I can tell you that sotmax v6 and v7 absolutely brilliant interms of battery life performance.
Wit 3g full time on. My battery able to last longer at least 22hours++ with 6.5hours screen on time.
I can show you the photo as I captured previously.
