I have a unique issue... at least I haven't seen this issue asked or addressed. I'm trying to root my Sprint SGS3 on Jellybean 4.1.1, LJ7. I've tried to root using Odin tar files and Odin One-click's. I've done both with my Epic 4g Touch and NEVER... EVER had this problem before. What happens is EVERY time I try to root, weather using Odin tar files or Odin One-click's the progress goes as far as "getting PIT for mapping", then stops and eventually, ALWAYS fails. YES, I have the debugging box checked in settings on the phoneQ. YES,

The debugging box is completely irrelevant here. Are you in download mode. Try reinstalling the drivers and using a different cable/usb port
In pretty sure you can leave the pit field empty

Are you putting the tar file in the pda slot?
This is the method I've used twice with no issues

I've tried using different USB cables, I've tried reinstalling the drivers, yes the tar file is in the PDA slot. Any more suggestions?

Did you try using a different usb port? Some coms are picky and that works for some people.
Yes, I've tried different com ports and different computers and different com ports on the different computers. I still get the same results.

Is there any way to root stock EI22 without usng odin? For some reason odin won't see my phone anymore :\
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
How about Heimdall? It has its own drivers. Otherwise with stock there is no way to get a clockworkmod recovery in without it.

so you dont have CW of any version? the su.zip file was all i needed to load but if you have no loader, you need to odin or heimdall. try a direct usb port fro mthe motherboard or wipe out your samsung drivers and reinstall. Heimdall messed up my samsung drivers after i ran it so i reinstalled them.
Every time my Odin acts up it is a driver uninstall, reboot, reinstall, and/or switch cables and usb ports until I find the secret combination that both windows and Odin can agree upon for the session.

You can use odin from whatever windows pc you'd like as long as you have your drivers installed.

Absolutely. I have it on three different machines. Two home one laptop at office. Just make sure you have the drivers for the device loaded first. AND have a GOOD USB cable.
Thanks very much guys!

I don't know if this is a Odin issue or maybe my phone. While trying to root my phone, it stops at recovery.img than stalemates until I unplug it. Tried it with odin verison 3.04 & .07, no luck with either. Don't know what the issue is, anyone may giving me a helping hand.

Are you using an img file or a tar file. You need tar file when using odin.

What flavor of windows are you using? Does Windows recognize it? I have Win 7 and had to re-install Kies, updated it, and then ran as administrator in Win XP sp3 compatibility mode. Also, some have found hooking up the phone first, then opening Kies finds the phone, (Windows should see it first then ask what you want to do- click view files/folders and then minimize those windows). Just updated my GF's phone last night doing the above. Also, at certain points Kies may drop the phone, but reconnects and installs. Hope this helps.
Mmm try new ver odim or old one change cable or pc

Thanks for the replys guys but I just gave up and went ahead and put PAC man on her phone

Man, ive used odin a couple of times without any problem. I rooted and flashed su on 4.0.4 and then updated to stock jb and rooted using odin. What I meant by rooting is flashing a custom recovery. Yes, after all that I still flashed custom roms, lol, and yes, im now running a modified stock rom thanks to rushing who mixed the best mods and I just forget about tweaking and flashing many zips. Mobile hotspot working stock, priceless.

I tried to root my galaxy s3 but it stays at "get pit for mapping". I have kies installed and closed when using odin and have the correct drivers. how do you fix this?

I believe kies is to be uninstalled before using ODIN.

That's not correct. I use Odin everyday and certainly do not uninstall Kies first. OP, have you tried different ports on your pc? Try them all. Another thing I read, if you are on a 64 bit machine, try creating a 32 bit virtual and doing it from there(last resort). Try doing it from a Windows XP computer(if not already). And try to flash back completely to stock, unrooted, and start again. See if any of those help.

Are you trying to root in download mode or with the phone turned on?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 4
root
It is in download mode. I heard people had this problem before but found no real answer.
Your are using the *.tar? Or you unzipped it?
Also try reinstalling drivers. Connect it turned on, let the PC recognize it. Then do do the same in download mode. Then disconnect the phone, open Odin an try again.
