I wasn't able to get Google Sync to push emails to my phone, so I bit the bullet and forwarded my Gmail accounts to my Windows Live Account, because I could then get push email on my TP2 using the Windows Live app.
I assumed that email would be pushed to my device through MS servers, thus saving battery life by not having the phone check for mail every minute. And to some extent, this is what I think is happening. But the battery life SUCKS now! I surf the web on my phone and listen to music for about 4-5 hours a day. The rest of the time, it's inactive in my pocket while I'm at work, and is charged every night.
But with Windows live mail on, the phone gradually gets warm while playing music (Microfi nitrogen) and gives me low battery warnings by 7PM. Normally I could go 1.5 days without a recharge.
Here are my Windows Live Settings:
Sync Options --> Sync Email (ticked)
Sync Schedule --> As Items Arrive
Sync Times ---> Always
These seem to be fairly standard, and nothing power-intensive. Does anyone have an idea as to why my battery life has dropped off a cliff? Thanks.
don't really know, but I noticed that I had my phone checking G-mail, regular hotmail, and yahoo every 30 minutes. Battery from full morning charge, would be at 1 bar by 9pm. This is w/ normal use, using BT for an hour, 10 phone calls or so.
I thought that the Push concept only applied to MSFT Exchange server. You may be emulating 'push' using the other accounts, but I'm not sure if its the same. I'd just change your sync settings to like 2 hours and observe it, not the best thing, but it'll give you a better idea. Thats what I've had mine at now all day and the one bar hasn't dropped off yet..

Using the push email features means that the phone keeps a constant connection to the Internet servers, transferring data continuously. That eats up the battery. I had the same symptoms when I set up Activesync to use push email from my gmail account. I stopped using push (which worked fine - when gmail got a new message, I IMMEDIATELY got a push email) and went back to manual checking. I don't use my gmail for primary email anyway, I was just checking the capability.
but i thought the point of push email, at least when using a WindowsLive/Hotmail account was that MS servers were doing the work of checking my account for new mail, and then notifying me only when I had new mail to check, kinda like an SMS alert. That is supposed to take the strain of checking continuously off of my device.
I had a BB Bold 9700, and this is how push email is supposed to work. Blackberry's Enterprise servers check all their users' mail accounts for new mail continuously, and push notifications to the users when new mail arrives.
It's very disappointing to know that this sort of system is not possible on the TP2. I switched to it from the 9700 because the surfing experience was better, and I liked the customizability, but lately I've been regretting my decision to switch, seeing as how seamless and fast BB OS 5.0 is compared to WM, which, even after downgrading to 6.1 and disabling, is sluggish to the point of annoyance.
Honestly, I had a Samsung Blackjack II with WM Standard 6.1, and it often felt faster than my TP2.

The blackberry is designed fro the start to do push; the WM platform is designed as a portable computer, to which they have added push capabilities. I'm not really sure how the BB connects to push, but I suspect that it is not via what we would normally call an Internet connection. If you really need push, then I'd suggest either going back to BB or getting an extended battery.

It is my understanding that exchange push only connects when it receives a 'wake up' message from the server.
I use exchange push 24/7 and the few times that I have turned it off, I noticed no difference in battery life.

I think the issue is with the gmail push system. I suppose if one is using an actual MS Exchange mail system at a company it may work better.
Same with me when I have it set to "as items arrive" drains the battery fast !
I have Gmail push set up through ActiveSync and notice no impact on battery life. If anything, I get better battery life than when I had email set up as IMAP and checking the server every 30 minutes.

Wow, I wonder why mine doesn't do that. Are you syncing just email or other data as well?

Just email. No contacts or calendar - I sync those from my PC at home.
My Touch Pro 2 uses about 2 Meg a day just in keeping the heartbeat alive for Windows Live with only the hotmail service active.
I worked this out as Windows Live runs as a service which is hosted by services.exe. If I monitor the bandwidth usage of services.exe, it works out to be about 2 Meg a day. (Verfied that hotmail was the only thing going through services by turning off hotmail and verifying that bandwidth usage of services.exe didn't increase.
I'm more concerned about bandwidth usage of Windows Live. However, I'm assuming that bandwidth usage = heat and battery life which are issues that started this thread.
Can anyone else confirm that they are seeing similar bandwidth usage just in maintaining the heartbeat?
Does anyone know how to reduce the heartbeat frequency? As that would reduce bandwidth usage, heat, battery life etc.
Thx. Paul
Let me start off by saying that this issue has had me running in circles going batsh!t crazy for weeks now. Generally speaking, Exchange contacts and mail worked for me right out of the box using the built in Sense Mail and continued to work through several iterations of the Fresh ROM. Definitely occasional issues but all in all it worked. And, since I was constantly experimenting with new ROMs, I always just assumed it was me who had done something when syncing stopped working.
That said, after weeks of no tweaking Exchange Mail suddenly stopped working and despite all efforts I can't get it to work well again. Moxier, Roadsync, and Touchdown all work without a hitch. And, even the AOSP Email app I used when trying out Cyanogen continued to sync despite the occasional "connection error." Unfortunately, I would really prefer to use the built in Sense Mail app and hope someone here can help me fix whatever it is that is not working.
What Works and What Doesn't:
Exchange Mail - If I delete the account and start over I can nearly always set the account up but, on occasion get continuous "Failure, Try Again Later" dialogs. Once set up, the phone immediately starts trying to sync. The most frequent result at this point is no mail shows up but the syncing icon will spin for hours to no avail. However, if I go to view the folders, I can see my different folders which are clearly from my exchange account. However, sometimes after I set the account up and it starts syncing, some mail WILL start to show up in the inbox (10-20 messages) but then stop while the sync icon spins indefinitely.
Exchange Contacts - Always worked and continues to work
Exchange Calendar - From the very beginning had "connection timeout socket" issues but so I use a workaround using Google Calendar Sync. I am perfectly fine with this workaround so, if it can't be fixed it is no big deal.
Numerous times I have tried
-deleting and re-adding the account
-changing up the sync options
-wiping the phone and re-flashing ROM's (including stock)
-Using apps that prevent the phone from locking
-screaming and yelling
If anyone can help I would be very grateful. I also attached a logcat that ran this morning.

hmmmm...
For clarification:
After a hard reset, no rooting, no ROM, just a plain stock 2.2 EVO, you cannot sync Exchange mail? Contacts are OK, and Calendar requires workaround?
I would check with your IT dept and see if they have any restrictions on device synchronization. Ensure they are running at least Exchange 2007, and try having them delete the synchronization from the server-side.
I would test on a different EVO, preferably one that has never been rooted or flashed. Does your account sync, or can you duplicate the symptoms?
Fully stock EVO has the same inconsistencies. I'm on my second EVO due to a screen issue with the first one and was traveling so didn't root the new one for about a week and had same issues. Additionally, there is someone in our IT dept with an EVO who has had the same issues but, lacking my perseverance (or stupidity) gave up for touchdown.
It seems to be completely isolated to the HTC Mail app because even if I install the AOSP Email app on a Sense Rom I can sync email fine. Unfortunately, the AOSP Email app has little functionality in comparison and what I like most is the full screen widget of the Sense...

Check your settings for SSL and TLS. Maybe something is off there. Also check how much mail you are trying to sync and the size of the mails you're trying to download. These are all in the account settings.
Also find out if your IT dept has changed anything on their end. I had issues when upgraded from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010, it could be something related to that also...
Perhaps you can provide your settings and we can take a look. It's hard to pinpoint a problem without specific info.
there are some good suggestions in the thread already, but I have something relatively basic you could try. At anytime after deleting your exchange info, did you ever go into manage applications and see if there was any data still in the mail app, and if so, did you try to clear the data and cache before reloading your exchange info?
Regarding the amount of mail I am trying to sync, I've tried the default 14 days down to 3 days with no difference in reliability. I've also tried changing up the allowed size of emails from anywhere between 10kb and entire mail but still no consistency.
The settings I use are pretty straight forward and haven't messed around too much because I haven't seen to many areas to tweak. The server address is mail.companyname.com and the domain is companynameI've tried with and without the SSL box checked which has made no real difference.
What makes it frustrating is the inconsistency. For example, yesterday I deleted and set the account up again with another combination of settings and email started syncing almost immediately. But, as is typical, after syncing the first 20 messages or so nothing else showed up and the sync icon spun indefinitely. And, contacts of course synced without issue.
If there are other settings you recommend me looking at, please let me know.
fachadick had an excellent suggestion. I've seen similar sync issues when the local cache remains even after having removed the account (client-side), or if a particular mailbox in Exchange was previously synced with a Windows Mobile device (server-side).
1. Try removing the account from your EVO, and wiping out the local cache in Settings - Applications - Manage Applications (the 'All' tab). Check every app that is associated: Calendar, Calendar storage, Calendar Sync Adapter, Contacts Storage, etc, etc
2. Have your IT dept delete any and all sync relationships on the server side.
After these two items, reboot your phone, wait a while, and try again. Question: what version of Exchange does your company run?
Maybe this is more of a general ICS question but I'm not sure where else to ask it. I just bought a VZW GN and I'm getting it up and working but one thing is really bothering me. I have 2 gmail accounts, one general with talk enabled and one business account (google apps) with talk disabled. I have the account settings set to sync e-mail and calendar from the google apps account. However, google talk CONSTANTLY informs me that it was unable to sign in on the google apps account.
I use google talk quite a bit, but only on my personal account. Is there away to remove my business account from google talk? or at least stop the automatic sign on? This was never a problem in my previous android phones.
You should be able to disable the automatic sign in through settings. Don't forget to log off as well.
Another way around this is to wipe the phone, and then add your personal account to the device first. With every Android phone, the first gmail account to be added becomes the default GTalk account, plus it is the main market account. In the past (before you could switch market accounts), if you accidentally used the wrong account during initial setup, you had to wipe the phone to fix it. Now that market can handle multiple accounts, I think you only have to wipe to fix the default gtalk account.
I don't even know if it's possible to sign in more than one Gtalk account? If not, then you have to wipe and start over, making sure that the account you want to use for gtalk is your first account on the phone.
At least, that's how it's always worked with gingerbread and earlier. I don't know about ICS just yet (my GNex is charging and i'm avoiding setup until I get home).
Hey guys,
I've been messing around with this off and on all day. From what I can tell, ICS logs into multiple Gtalk accounts simultaneously. This would be great except for the fact that one of my accounts has Gtalk disabled.
@ Ves - I cannot find in settings where to disable automatic sign on. I can see the "sign out" option, but the account I'm trying to disable the automatic sign on for is already signed out (since it can't sign on). Still, I pushed it and it is still trying to reconnect quite frequently. I've been in and out of these settings all day so if I'm blind and another Nexus user found the option please tell me where it is!
@ ZPrimed - I actually did add the personal account (with Gtalk enabled) to the phone first. I added my work e-mail second. I am pretty sure what you are talking about was how I set up my Gingerbread phone before but now since there seems to be multiple signon to Gtalk it is adding both accounts to it and I still can't figure out how to remove one!
FYI, I think the failed sign ons are due to the fact that I am consistently losing 4g coverage every 30 mins or so (it's been this way since last week on my Thunderbolt) and the phone is trying to sign back on both Gtalk accounts when a connection returns.
Hmm. I have two accounts as well, gapps and standard, but my situation is reversed. I own the gapps domain, so I use talk on my gapps account, and my gmail account is just along for the ride. The gmail account is my spambin, or I use it when stupid websites feel that a hyphen is invalid in an e-mail address (my gapps domain has a dash in it). I don't really use it for anything else, i only sync mail and calendar on it.
I'm still using my Stratosphere right now, and on it the only account signed in to talk is my gapps account, and I can't find any way to enable the other account at all (i.e. I think gingerbread may be limited to one talk account, period).
Once I switch over to the nexus tonight I'll take a look and let you know what I find though.

My apologizes. I took another look and saw the option wasn't there on the GN. It's on the SGS2 as I took a look there. Mistook the option for each version.
Still weird that Google Talks keep trying to reconnect when you've chosen "Sign Out".
Have you tried activating the chat in Gmail then log in from your phone, wait a bit then sign out. Then go back to Gmail and disable it again.
Hey guys,
I asked the admin of our gapps domain very nicely to enable chat so i could try to fix my phone. once he enabled it, i was immediately able to sign on to gtalk thru the nexus, then select "sign out". This stopped the automatic sign on attemps. he disabled chat on the domain again and the phone seems to not mind. this seems to have solved my problem. thanks for the advice!
Hi All,
Last night I noticed that my phone wasn't going into deep sleep mode. I found out that the service which is preventing it from sleeping is "Exchange Services". I'm pretty sure that this is an android application.
I haven't installed anything new so I'm not sure how to get rid of it.
Anyone have any ideas?
I've run out of ideas.
Thanks
i'm dealing with the same issue. do you use exchange email? for me it's my exchange calendar for my work account. i have two other exchange accounts and they behave very well. when i used when i used Modaco's r11 (4.04) and the CDN 1.33 ROMs, it wasn't happening. i monitored activity for one night and it was OVER 100MB of data. the only resolution for me is to disable the calendar sync until i need to use it.
Hey Cortez,
I found out why it was sucking away my battery life. Turns out my account wasn't syncing properly so the phone kept it awake for ages trying to sync it. What I did was just remove my email account and re-add it.
Worked a treat!
Give it a go too.
Anyone using Exchange on the native email client suddenly notice a huge battery drain/wakelock with Exchange server?
I haven't changed my email setup in weeks and I've never had this problem before. My phone is a little over 5 hours off charger and at 19%! Exchange services is at 19% with a 1h 13m wakelock on BBS.
I have Gmail and Hotmail (yeah, yeah) accounts both set up as push. Only the Gmail syncs contacts and calendar (I've double-checked everything). I probably get ~20 emails/day or so.
Until today, I would get >24 hours with light usage, and a full day with heavier usage. This literally started today out of the blue.
I searched all of XDA and the GN forums specifically and didn't see anything that addressed this particular issue. Any suggestions?
TIA
Anyone?
The actual service is com.android.exchange.Exchange Services
somehow the native email push keeps running and waking up the phone..
so i just sent to never notify me.
and i manually click the app to check every now and then to solve this problem and maintain my battery life

The weird thing is that it just started doing this, even though I haven't changed any settings in weeks. And not having push email would suck...
This has happened to me from time to time on CM and AOSP ROMs, but not on my GN yet. It's a Google problem IIRC and something that they "fixed" in the past, but they obviously haven't.
I'd observe this 1/10 nightly ROM flashes so I'd keep an eye on it for the first couple of hours afterwards and kill it if it was starting to go rogue.
It's a known, flagged, issue (on Google) but I don't have the link handy.
i noticed similar Exchange Mail behavior on my phone with any ROM that i flashed. i narrowed the constant-sync to my calendar. when i disabled calendar sync, the battery drain stopped. my research suggested the problem was related to a corrupt calendar or recurring calendar entries. so i archived all my Exchange calendar entries (which removed them from my calendar) removed then re-added the Exchange account to my phone and finally restored the calendar entries i needed. so far, no issues and i've flashed 3 ROMs and the problem has not returned. somewhat extreme, but it worked!
I have no issues with stock Exchange and Gmail apps on rooted 4.0.4.
You could try deleting and recreating the email accounts to see if that helps.
Also got the issue this night. 25% gone after 4 hours sleep, wakelock because of the Exchange service ... Disabled google sync, then reenabled it 2 hours later, and no problem ... It gets stuck somehow sometimes ...
I had the same problem on my SGS2 on ICS. I finally had no choice but to migrate my email to Google Apps. In the end it was the best decision since the Archive function on the GMail app is amazing and it simply works 10x better than any Exchange ActiveSync client.
The Google Apps connector for Outlook also works almost as well as Exchange Server.
