Ok so my new S3 comes in today and I WILL have it rooted as soon as it is out of the box. My question is after checking out several root guides I see a pattern I'm curious about. I am coming from other rooted phones obviously and many of them required adb. basically it looks like i can just boot up odin and flash a a rooted rom and recovery essentially (assuming I don't care for stock rom/recovery and counter) is this about right? I ask because If i don't have to flash SU and a stock recovery then flash a rooted recovery or something like that than i'd rather not lol.
It looks like install samsung drivers, flash recovery, boot recovery, flash custom rom, profit! is this about right? (leaving out the wipes and stuff but that is obviously part of it)
I just odined stock Rom with root then flashed cwr and then flashed whatever I wanted

thats what i meant though it sounds like i can skip the stock rom with root...or am I wrong? Do I NEED to flash the stock rom with root or SU into the stock rom before flashing a custom rom or can i just go straight to a custom rom?
You should be able to just Odin a recovery and then boot right into recovery and flash
Here's link to Odin recovery

Hey, I was wondering if only rooting my phone ( I still have the stock rom ) would prevent my phone from receiving OTA updates? My wife and I bought our phones at the same time, mine was even activated first, and her OTA update, which includes the wifi calling, came tonight, and I haven't seen mine.
So I was just curious if it is still going to come eventually, or if I need to just flash the updated version of the stock rom? Thanks
You will get the update regardless of what rom or recovery or rooted or unrooted.
Now in order to install it ota you need stock rom and stock recovery though. If you rooted and installed cwm recovery then you need to flash stock recovery.
If your rooted. On stock rom. And stock recovery(like I was) then no worries just install away.

Do we have flash able rooted roms that can be flash with stock recovery ? Because lots people get stuck at boot loop or logo and they are away from pcs but they can get to stock recovery . So flash they rom then get mobile odin , get back up from cwm get original rom back without pc on the road .
You can't flash anything from stock recovery that hasn't been signed by samsung/sprint. But there are some unlock recoverys.

But most aokp roms because of bricking issues they have stock recovery so I though if devs can make some flash able rom with sign or some kind of alternative they would be a great. ( most case you don't need but when you get stuck and u don't have any computer access. )
You can flash if it is unlocked stock recovery.
Looking for a safe root method without having to use CWM Recovery. I want to be able to keep stock recovery and be rooted just in case we get 4.2.2 anytime soon.

Not possible, but you can flash stock recovery back after you've rooted successfully, you can find the root procedure and the stock recovery in the faq which can be found in my Sig. Also, when/if 4.2.2 dies come out, I can guarantee that a stock rooted build will be available before most get the actual ota anyways and you'll need a custom recovery for that, so just root and if the update comes out, flash the stock rooted build with cwm or twrp...

Hello.
Just got this phone, i trade it for a s3.First thing im trying to do is install custom recovery..but something is wrong. i flashed the phone like 15 times with all of the recoveries, twrp, cwm, philz... and the phone always boots into the official recovery. Odin says its ok.PASS, Sucsseded 1, failed 0..
And than when i try to boot into the recovery the stock recovery shows up??
It happened on the 4.1.2, and i updated it to 4.3, official via ota, and it is the same with 4.3 too.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks.
Are you rooted?

all official 4.3.
You're supposed to root the phone first, then flash custom recovery.

Lol, im trying that right now!
Phils recovery has a root and custom recovery in one that can be flashed with odin. Because you have done the 4.3 ota you will probably have to deal with knox now. Dr ketans guides are really helpful, you need to know what bootloader you have now.

I did it!
The solution is TO READ! What i didnt do completly
The problem was with the recovery restore files that were present. I manged to rename those files, root it and install twrp with the SkipSoft toolkit.
I recently tried to root my phone using CF Auto Root and its now stuck in boot loop. The phone is a sm-n910p running 5.1.1. Is there anything I can do to fix it? I have been trying to use stock roms but they either fail in odin or they cause odin to freeze up without doing anything. The only error I can see is SW Rev check fail fused 4 binary 1

Stock ROMs getting flashed in Odin? Stock tars full and partitions from tar ball or custom recovery is all you should flash with Odin.
If you're trying to flash custom OG5 ROMs, that would require TWRP or CWM recovery flashed in Odin.
CF Auto Root was suggested until Android 5.1.1/OG5 update. Root now requires kernel exploit like Beastmode kernel by freeza plus SuperSU zip to root stock flashed in custom recovery.
Odin to flash custom recovery would be a prerequisite for rooting stock with those zips or custom ROM zip.

Custom OG5 ROMs only require custom recovery to flash because they're pre-rooted with those during flash.

I was able to flash the TWRP 2.8.1.1 and im able to access the menu in recovery mode however I still get stuck on the boot loop with no kernel even though I had one on the phone before starting the process
Have you flashed the Beastmode kernel and SuperSU zip linked in the post I linked you to above? Are you getting a message indicating no kernel installed? A ROM flash or those zips would get a kernel onboard.
If you're stuck, just try OBAR ROM on a clean install. You can find it in development forum.

I was able to do a complete reinstall after a few hours of stock rom and it seems ok as of right now still back on 5.1.1. How do I root it but still keep everything as close to stock as possible?
And yes i have checked out the beastmode however the link is down.

The link is live in the post above. Scroll down to where SuperSU zip is linked as well. Flash both those in TWRP recovery.
You'll still need to freeze or remove Knox. There's some other notes that apply to stock in that post, like the build.prop edit.

@tx_dbs_tx has 2 stock, prerooted, odexed & deodexed roms. They are completely stock excepting Knox & sprint itson and as I said are prerooted.
If that sounds like what you are looking for here is the link :

Thanks..i was able to get twrp 2.8.7.0 loaded on and the beastmode kernel..however the phone seems to be draining battery extremely fast even with my zerolemon extended battery..in about 5 hours I'd normally go from 90-80% with average usage where as today I barely used it and it dropped from 65-20%. If I'm trying to remain as close to stock as possible but just have root permissions with the bloatware removed which one would I want the odexed or deodexed? Do i have to flash the ALL_SPT_N910PVPU4COG5_N910PSPT4COG5_CL5303209_QB56 91107_REV00_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT.tar.md5 before flashing one of those?

Odexed is better for performance, deodexed is a better choice for moding. I always use deodexed as the performance of this device is outstanding.
As for the battery issues, I use GSam battery monitor (there are many others). It helps you see what is using up battery.
Go through the system settings and turn off things that aren't necessary for you. Many of them contribute to battery drain. It's a drip, drip, drip thing... Not any one thing. A process of learning what helps and what doesn't. There's no catch all answer... You've got to work at it.
