Sprint GS3 to Ting? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I just found out this network provider named Ting, that works on the Sprint network but prepaid (way less money), they have the exact same phones as Sprint, does anyone knows how to activate a Sprint device (SG3) to Ting?
Thanks.

Ting just announced a BYOD beta yesterday, but the SGS3 isn't supported officially. Check their blog for details.
If you're feeling adventurous, keep an eye on Ting's forums, since people are always looking for better ways to bring SGS3s over, even without official support (Ting is awesome about letting users do stuff like this). There are already a few methods that mostly work, but hopefully the BYOD program will make porting phones easier and cheaper (no donor phone, no pricey software).

I'm on these Sprint S3 forums because the S3 phone that I got from Ting is totally Sprint branded. So, it just doesn't make since why the S3 isn't on the porting list, along with the Ting newly announced Note II. Bummer.
However, you will enoy paying for what you actually use on Ting. My Sprint bill was $82 per month, but my last Ting bill was just $17 for using the same Sprint service the same way I always use my phone. So, I haven't change how I use my phone, and I get to pocket $65 per month. It's like I'm back on the old Sprint Premier plan since my monthly savings pays for a phone upgrade every eight months or so.

thats my point, I am paying ~90 dollars a month for plan that I barely use, my reception is awful and the data plan is worst. so I cannot flash this phone to att or t-mobile (those work better on my area), Ting will be the best possible solution, paying 30-40 dollars for what I am actually getting right now.

I also love Ting. I used to pay $225 for a family plan. I now pay ~$80 for the same thing. 4 phones all sharing the account. Can't beat that price with a stick!
I have figured out how to fix MMS on CM10 for Ting.
1. Use Voice Dailer and say "Edit APN's" apns is a single word. Or use Nova Launcher and create a shortcut to edit APN's. To do that hold down on an empty spot on a homescreen. Then choose "shortcuts", then activities, scroll to settings, choose APNs. That will give you an Icon that goes directly to edit the APNs settings.
2. Click on the icon you created and look at the APN2 settings. Click on each and find the item MMSC. Change the server to be http://mms.plspictures.com
and press OK, then click the menu hard key on the phone and select save. Do this for both APN2 items.
3. Reboot and your MMS should work fine.
I have not figured out how to edit the string for LTE data yet but I am working on it.

Ouch. just ran myself on TING. $119.50 for my average month (currently paying $35) I guess I use too much data even just the MINUTES would be $46 a month (I guessed 1500 since you don't get N&W from what I see on ting)
I currently with with 500 anytime minutes BUT that includes 7-7 N&W as well as any mobile mobile to mobile. so I only really use 200-300 minutes a month that are not mobile or 7-7 N&W
so when you figure out if ting works for you or not BE SURE to account for this very critical difference.

Fixed 4G!
Ok, if you have a SGS3 and you port it over to Ting it is very easy to get it running right.
If you are running a TW based ROM then you simply update PRL and profile and it will pick up the correct settings.
If you are running a CM10 based rom there is an extra step. In the attached file (apns-conf.zip) there is a file named apns-conf.zml
Extract it to you phone somewhere easy to get to. (I put it in the root of the CD Card). Then go into the phone and use any file util that allows root operations and move that file to /system/etc/apns-conf.xml overwriting the file that exists with that name.
Reboot the phone and you are good to go. 4G LTE will now work.
By way of explanation I flashed a TW rom, used an app to extract the APN settings. Then changed the default APN settings in the file attached so that CM10 would have the same APN settings as the TW rom and it worked.

Noob forever

All this is amazing, I'm trying to get my family on Ting, and my mom has a Sprint Gnex. I've looked everywhere, read the via programming thread, but you managed to get 4g working on a Sprint Galaxy SIII on Ting?! I assume you also used a donor phone and dragon magic?
You would be my forever hero if you pointed me in the direction of what you did, and hopefully I can apply it to the Gnex.

Basically he just went to stock, saw what file was changed when he got 4G working (by updating profile and PRL) and pulled that file so you could replace it while on a CM rom

would this work for metropcs to ting? Or is this only a sprint thing?
I mean if i wanted to switch from metropcs to ting, how would i go about doing so? Get a ting SIM card and than edit the APN?

With ting. One phone with 500 mins and 10gbs of data (amount i use) would come out to $200+ wtf Lol

ting is utterly USELESS for mobile data users.
its really designed for those people who only use minutes and text and not very much who are massively overpaying with the unlimited and high minute and data plans most of us use.
for those people its fantastic and very cheap.
for us Boost is one of the best. you can get down to $35 to $40 a month for unlimited everything.

Indeed. Many smaller retail businesses here have an open network. I guess it's supposed to motivate customers or something. I'd imagine some ports are usually blocked, but I rarely need anything except 20-22 and 80 anyway.

wow around here EVERYTHING is locked up tight. its very rare to find an open access point anywhere.
xfinity is around a lot of places (I have comcast so I can access those) but its largely useless as only the web browser works. none of the apps or gmail or any push notifications of anything like that works (port restrictions??)
the rare time I see an open access point pop up its usually too far away to get a reliable connection too and don't have time to go walking around with the phone in the air to try and find it

Thanks i'm going to get a used S3 and use it on ting.

Looks like ill be cancelling Sprint n jumping to Ting, seems like its a really good deal. I pay $80 a month for 450 minutes which I used about 15 minutes of, unlimited texts which I sent about 4000 last month n my data I rarely use now, bc I either use Wifi or my tablet. Sucks Ill have to pay the cancellation fee, but Ill be saving more in the long run.

before you cancel see about putting another handset on the account first and see if you can "sell" the account to someone else (for free) ie do a TOL a transfer of liability. someone else gets the account they may want or need and you don't have to pay termination.
how far are you into your contract? might be cheaper to "buy out" your contract and then terminate out of contract (not usually viable till near the end though)

Teathering on T-Mo TP2?

I am contemplating dumping my HTC Fuze and jumping ship from AT&T to T-Mobile just to get a Touch Pro 2, however I just got off the phone with T-Mo customer service and they informed me that you cannot tether the Touch Pro 2 to a laptop or use it as a modem.
Now I am sure the harware supports tethering and this is just something T-Mobile has decided to cripple, but how easy would it be to enable teathering? I hate the idea of paying $350 plus locking into a new contract and losing functionality from my Fuze!
Baloney.
Internet sharing is on the phone and the HTC WiFiRouter works perfectly.
I have tested both.
Thank you for the fast response, and for clearing this up! Once again, knowledge gained from this site continues to impress me!!!
I think what the T-Mobile people were actually getting at is your not supposed to do it.
I think its in the T&C's that if you have a data plan you wont use it through a computer and to watch video etc
(I use it all the time though and they dont enforce it)
You can tether (legitimately) on Total Internet (their old $20 plan) or the new "PDA" plans ($25 and $35, but include messaging.)
You CANNOT (according to the rules) do so on their "phone" plans (Web2Go I think now) but in some cases it will work. They're enforcing this with the TP2 by doing the "automatic add the feature" game based on IMEI, as they have with other smartphones they are selling now (especially the Android ones that won't work at all without it.)
Note that the TP2 has a number of included features (including embedded account management!) that doesn't work right, especially from the browser, if you use the Internet2 or Internet3 APN. You have to use "epc" if you want those to work.
I'm not sure why they'd care about video and such on the TP2 in particular, seeing as it has a Youtube video viewer BUILT IN FROM THE FACTORY in T-Mobile's software load!

Where are you finding this "HTC WiFiRouter"?? (I'm on the T-Mobile version just like you guys)
I don't see it anywhere. I feel like such a newb, lol, even though I'm an ex-cook from my old Wing. So the WiFiRouter thing is pre-installed, right? And it'd let me create a WiFi hotspot for others to connect and use my data? That's what it sounds like.
Am I way off here? Or where the heck is this program? (Welcome everyone)

T-mobile policy on tethering
Per policy it states that this type of 3g HSPCA device isnt allowed to tether and be used as a modem but the phone says otherwise. Also my theory on the last minute price jump on the tp2 is because tmobile can't stop it from being used as a modem on there smart phone data plans like they have with non rooted android devices. As an employee I researched this heavily before buying the TP2 and its one of the reasons why I went for the device. T-Mobile is so proud of their new 3g network but have made a lot of decisions to try and limit bandwidth consumption like removing push internet from the device. But anyway it should work. My disclaimer is that policy changes constantly at T-Mobile so this may not always be so.

Tethering works. I have a Touch Pro 2 with the stock T-Mobile USA ROM. Despite what the T-Mobile representative says, the stock ROM contains the correct application to do this. Programs --> Internet Sharing.
Plug the Touch Pro 2 into your computer via USB and then hit "Connect". Bam, instant Internet tethering. Works well if you're in a bind.
T-Mobile does states exactly this:
"1. Permissible and Prohibited Uses
Your Data Plan is intended for Web browsing, messaging, and similar activities on your device and not on any other equipment. Unless explicitly permitted by your Data Plan, other uses, including for example, tethering your device to a personal computer or other hardware, are not permitted."
When I logged in to get details of my Data Plan, here is what I found:
"T-Mobile Total Internet
T-Mobile Total Internet includes unlimited Internet access on your phone, along with unlimited Internet access in T-Mobile HotSpot locations. Access your e-mail or browse the Web on your phone, or log on to wireless broadband access from a T-Mobile HotSpot in one of thousands of locations around the world using your Wi-Fi-enabled device."
I'm not inclined to poke this fire with T-Mobile as I have been a customer for a long time and have been nothing but happy with their customer service; and even before a put a cooked ROM on my last phone (wing) it had an internet connection sharing by default (bluetooth or USB only).

This is one blind statement if I ever heard one!
Tmobile IS your ISP. Tmobile KNOWS where you go and what you do.
Now, whether they will actually take the time to look through their logs and find out who's been going where, that's a different story.
But don't say they can't prove anything, because they can, and if they want to they will terminate your contract, and charge you the ETF on top.
FYI, I've been with Tmobile since they were VoiceStream. In fact I opened the account in Feb of 2001. Not to mention, at some point during my career I've actually managed the entire wireless account pool for a 150 people office, and most of them were on Tmobile. That should tell you something about my level of knowledge, as well as loyalty.

Start - Programs - Internet sharing.
LOL
The last post was too funny. Seriously though, T-Mobile has little in the way of "monitoring" what data is being sent to your phone. Its more of the amount thats an issue. T-Mobiles logic is that tethering will burn up bandwidth quicker which makes it more likely to hit the data cap and considering whats going on with ATT and the IPHONE bandwidth issue it makes sense. BUT if you monitor your bandwidth consumption and keep it under 10gb, I would say safer would be under 5gb a month then your not rocking the boat. And even when it hits the cap is throttles down to edge speeds anyway so I cant see an issue in this. Now if you live on tethering 24/7 then ya your gonna be pushing it. Customer care can see your data consumption in the system so just call um up and say hey I am worried I might be going over my data limit, lol they will be like blah i know how important blah blah it is to not go over. Then when they shut up they will say you used only 3gb this month so far so your doing fine blah blah blah. If T-Mobile had something in place to detect you tethering they wouldnt have made google remove the tether app from the market. Open source i guess means its open until you do something we think isnt right? I think its still bunk because what happens when someone hits the cap on there 3g phone. nada. And you would be surprised how under used T-Mobiles 3g network really is depending on the city. Theres some rumor that this was planned since the iphone may be going to other carriers soon. I will leave it at that.

Questions...

I'm new to CDMA/EVDO carriers, so I'd appreciate if you could answer some questions with regarding to the technology, Verizon and Droid Incredible itself.
A little bit of a background here. I'm using Nexus One on T-Mobile. Coverage in Chicago has been o.k., but Nexus One itself has reception problem which Google seems to have stopped working on it. I'm planning to get a Mifi from Verizon soon as I need internet connection when I start to travel more.
But I have other idea, getting Droid Incredible, and drop T-Mobile. Tether it with my laptop while I'm on the go.
1:Would it be possible to use data & voice at the same time?
2:I'm planning to get PdaNet or some other app to tether it with my laptop. Should I worry about extra charge from Verizon?
3:What's the difference between corporate (44.99) and smartphone (29.99) data plan? I just need to reach IMAPS,HTTP,HTTPS, and PPTP(GRE) servers. Does Verizon block these on $29.99 plan? (Verizon sales are clueless. They just said $44.99 for business "like big business", and $29.99 is for personal use.
4:Rooting this phone. I assume that it's just the matter of time before it's released. But will there be any problem with Verizon?
5:Given Verizon history about being anal about controlling their phones. Did they block features on previous android handsets in the past? (i.e. no file xfer via BT, pics can only be sent via MMS, etc. etc.)
TIA for your answers. Given Verizon reputation of nickel & dime customers, I'm a little hesitated to switch to Verizon. But for now, it seems to make economical sense to do so, so I just wanted to make sure I understand what I'm signing up for.
1. should be able to afaik
2. you shouldnt need another app for that, youll pay extra through verizon to do it, or root the phone and you can do it without any extra charges
3. id go with the consumer pricing unless you find it isnt working for you, no sense on paying extra if it isnt needed
4. shouldnt be any problem with verizon and a rooted phone, ppl have been rooting droids and eris' since theyve been out
5. i doubt it, verizon cant control what happens to a rooted phone
some of your options may not be available until your phone is rooted, but it would definitely be worth the wait on such a sweet phone

Actually you can't use voice and data at the same time on VZW, but how often do you really need to?
1. No
2. PDANet will work fine - or once rooted you might not even need that. It's against Verizon's TOS to tether, but as long as you don't abuse it they won't know.
3. Get the cheaper plan - the more expensive plan is just a way for them to milk corp customers. You can use Exchange/etc with the cheaper plan.
4. You should be able to root it no problem once the devs get on it.
5. I don't think so - that's in Verizon's past for Smartphones. Heck I had a Motorola Q years ago on Verizon and I could do whatever I pleased...even tethering with PDANet...
about high prices
Thats why im staying with my nexous one
my wife is with verizon and we got her phone today and its really nice i cant tell at all a difference between the nexous one and the droid but
there basically the same phones
the nexous one is faster but then again it rooted
but i only pay $80 month for unlimited and she is paying $129 for unlimited
i dont care what i paid for my nexous im off contract and dont have to pay 129 dollars a month
I'll hijack the thread for a little question I have and I don't want to open another thread for it.
Are you able to use the widgets that were introduced with the stock 2.1? For example that News & Weather widget or are they fully replaced / not integrated by HTC in the Sense UI?
If not, are you able to add them with apps or alternative OS versions through rooting?
Thanks for the answers guys.
@Zabil : Quite often (when I travel). This is quite an important issue if I am getting this phone as "phone + data card" combo to save $$$
@sn95chico : I've had some problem with incoming call being diverted to voice mail due to background data (GSM, not WCDMA) recently. Just in case you experience this problem, check this thread out : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6301190
I read somewhere that for CDMA/1x/EVDO, your phone will still ring when data transfer is in progress, it will only be interrupted once you hit the answer button. This is first and only technological edge that CDMA has over GSM network, IMO. I've always been a fan of GSM/WCDMA network. --- (WCDMA network supports concurrent voice/data. Too bad that there's no 100% WCDMA network in US)
Since concurrent data + voice is impossible, it doesn't make much sense for me to switch to this phone yet. I might just get Verizon or Sprint mifi and be done with it.

[SOLVED] So...Can you USB tether? [solution # 25 no root required]

Seems to be mixed reviews that some can and some cannot. So what's the deal?
no....the end
Mine will let me but my web browser takes me to a page asking me to sign up for the Tethering service at $14.95/month.
Suppose the answer to the question is technically *yes*
I paid the upgrade for tethering, though I think it is a bit of bait and switch (their literature certainly wasn't clear, and my plan allowed it on my Vibrant with no complaint). But it is too important a function for me not to have. If I were a new customer, I would opt for it as well (unless some other carrier didn't charge extra). Frankly, I don't see why they can't just charge by the gigabyte (why should they care if you are streaming videos to your cell phone or to your PC?), but it seems this is the current convention.

If the carriers can charge you for something they will. It's as if 1GB on PC > 1GB on Phone. I assume that once we get root on these phones we'll be able to tether for free the same way I was able to on my Vibrant.

That should be the case. It's hard to go from 2 years (roughly of course) of using all sorts of awesome roms on the HD2 to this locked up guy. Here's to the future though, cheers.
Yes, I can.
I can. No app needed. Built right in the stock rom
I see another difference from previous tethering on the Vibrant: from the T-Mobile support page:
"When your phone is serving as a Wi-Fi hotspot for otherdevices, you cannot access the Internet on the phone itself."
It seems that it isn't completely true: I can listen to Internet radio, use Firefox, at least some of the time. The Android Market seems to fail consistently, however (just hangs "loading...").
Does anyone understand why this change has been made, or what is it's purpose?
i still don't quite can figure out why some people are able to teather as is without root
yet, some other are unable to teather
it's something in the phone plan that you guys have?, or simply the SIM card? or maybe it's on the account side in Tmobile?
I put the new SIM in my nexus and tethered fine when I couldn't from this phone.

I suppose that in order to ask us to sign onto tethering, the data must be going through the phone already, so they must have some filter in place that detects that fact and blocks further data, pending your decision.
Theres definitely something with the sim card. Used the sim from my mt4g and tethering would start and the automatically turn off a few seconds later. Activated the new sim and now it stays on but directs me to the site to purchse the service. Bummer.
We need to root this thing quickly.
Wonder if that's one of the reasons why tmo wants us to use the sim included.

Holy crap. I pay less than that for unlimited data. That's more than half of what a full data plan costs on T-Mobile. I take it not may people buy it. I'm guessing some of the custom ROMs will port over native tethering from the international SGS2. I wonder if T-Mobile flags tethering for people not on a legit tethering plan?
I tried to tether my Touchpad but got the T-Mobile page saying to add tethering. Gotta wait for root to get free tethering and utilize those fast data speeds!
i was doing some reserach on this and figured out how t-mobile does it. if you noticed when you turn on tethering a popup generates and after you enable it the 4g disappears for a bit, apparently in the software the phone disconnect your current apn, epc.tmobile.com and changes to another apn built into the phone software which checks for the 14.99 feature so yea sucks hopefully once root is established we can get around this. if you want to test this turn on wifi tether and then go to your apn and try to select the epc.tmobile apn bubble it will go on and then disconnect immediately
Has anyone tried any other APN's?

Here in the USA, T-Mobile charges $9.95/m for tethering. I chatted with T-Mobile asking them how come I cannot tether (brought to their promo page) and I was told that T-Mobile will be enforcing the T&Cs regarding tethering... that is, it's not allowed unless you pay for it.
I told them that my Vibrant and G2x tethered just fine to what he responded that this will change in the near future. He said that with the introduction of the SGS2 they will start to clamp down on tethering without a tethering plan.
Mind you, this is one T-Mo CSR and I don't know if it will really be policy. However, it's pretty clear that this is the case at least for the SGS2.

Anyone on prepaid? Need to figure out what's best. Please comment.

I have a R800at from ATT and I want to use it on prepaid for the wife, but data is important to me. Speed is important but so is the amount that's available. I cam get the phone unlocked and get a tmo aim for 1.99 and use there 50 unlimited plan bit I'm afraid of being condemned to a life of edge data speeds. I am trying to get the most data possible. Preferably 2 plus gigs with talk and text for 50 or less a month. I just haven't decided to go with ATT or unlock and tmobile.
Any input would be awesome and maybe your average speeds on tmo and ATT.
Thanks everyone.

Unlock, 15$ a pop for sim cards from straight talk, 45$ a month, 3g speeds.
Edit: That unlimted talk/text and "unlimited data" which is 7gb defined by howard forums.
That with att or tmo? If att I Sony need an unlock just a sum to pop in and go right.

Its an AT&T phone, dont even need an unlock, just need to edit an apn.
Check step 4 here; http://straighttalksim.com/support.php
Ok wife went to the store. Att Guy goes ahead and activates the 50 dollar monthly unlimited. Here they have a bucket of "dummy" phones. Salesman said yes your Sony experia play will work fine just add this fifty bucks. Well it needed an apn setting change and I knew it. Unfourtunatly with the "what's xda" types. Words such as " apn imei exploit" make people ignore you. No one listens to me and long story short and a call to "tech support" and were told its not possible to use 3g on a hspa+ phone that they don't even have the same bands on the hspa+ phones at the prepaid ATT bands. I start to comment with words like "850/900/1800/1900 gsm bands tri band" and boom dirty looks. After trying to point this out I finally gave up. Now she's stuck on the 25 dollar 250 min talk and text with 500mb for 25 more.
Still no data working. There's that apn issue again I've been trying to make you assholes understand. Now were stuck with a phone that has notes on the account about how we have the experia play and they blocked all data from the phone and refuse to give the money back on the data plan. Hey now people are actually read to let me talk. I said politley to the salesman thanks for wasting my time you should get a new job. And took my wife home.
With me still or did you give up on reading the big post?
I need to keep the number cause she's using it for a month to use the balance up so I can get it fixed. My next move now to salvage the number is to get a cheap gophone and activate it with a 50 unlimited plan and port the number over to a new account. Or should I get straight talk and port the number to a new account. What's gonna be better off here guys?

Tech support guy there is an idiot.
If you have the blue xperia play you have the two HSPDA(3g) bands (800/1900) that AT&T uses.
It seems you arent going to use straight talk but the AT&T prepaid.
The only AT&T prepaid I know is GoPhone.
If you are going with GoPhone and still want to try on xperia play;
1. Put the xperia play on wifi, get into the market and search "apn backup and restore"
2. Install, backup then Delete current APNs
3. On your play go to; Settings; Wireless and Networks; Mobile Networks;
4. Should be empty, press the menu button to make a new APN
5. Make your apn look like this; http://androidforums.com/htc-tattoo/61434-gophone-sim-card-apn-address-t.html
6. Reboot with your AT&T sim card inserted, should work after that.
If not let me know what service it is, and i'll try to find you the APN. I know it works on 3g/4g ATT bands, I have 4g data from straight talk.
If that doesnt work, id say do the straight talk port. Just order the sim card, activate it online, change the APN, done.
So whichever you decide to do, i'll try to help
Oh I have the apn and currently have the data working. I had it day working right away. Well as soon as the salesman was done inturupting me and being a tard.
The problem now is that it's a smartphone and now they know about it and wont give us the 50 unlimited plan. Were stuck on the 250 mins and unlt. Texts for 25 bucks with an extra 25 for 500mbs of data. Only cause we already added money to the account.
Now I'm interested in swithcing to straightalk after her 50 balance is used. Just need to attempt to port the number. I'd actually be happy doing a new att sim and porting the number across Sims but I doubt that's a good idea or even possible.
Any pointers on the SEP on straight talk 45 dollar unlimited plan?

Okay, first order a straight talk simcard, from StraightTalkSim.com
Head to https://www.straighttalk.com/Activate and select "Activate my Straight Talk phone with a number transferred from another company.". You'll need your account number and what not. (you should do this with at least 6-7 days left on the AT&T service plan, just in case)
After your number is ported (shouldnt take too long) you'll have to delete your APN's from the xperia play again, and make them look like the one shown in step 4 on this page; http://straighttalksim.com/support.php (AT&T compatible tab)
Now then, if you configure your play this way, you will be very limited in your data, like, no "browser" app browsing, no downloads. I'd assume this is because straight talk doesnt want you going over their Data Limit(yes they lie about unlimited, but most people say its around 7gb, and its hard to hit that even with your android unless you NEVER use wifi. Its common sense really, if your downloading the 1gb SD data for Modern Combat, just use wifi)
If you'd like to remove this limit on the data usage, just delete the PROXY and PORT fields in your APN for straight talk. Then you should have full data access in all your apps. And you even get H+ on your play, which is defined as 4g data. Not too bad for 45$ a month.

How can I cancel my data plan? ATT won't let me.

I've called and they tell me that I have to have it or the phone won't work or I have to cancel the entire service ...I've tried the website and it doesn't have that option.
Any help?

If you REALLY want to get rid of the data plan, (and your not in contract), then get an OLD flip phone and drop your sim in it. Wait a couple hours after making a few calls & texts with it so that it updates in their system.
Then call AT&T support and tell them that you have this old flip phone and you no longer need a data plan. They should at that time cancel the data plan from your account. Once done, take your sim and put it back into the S III.
NOTE : If you are on contract they won't acknowledge the phone change out and will continue with the data plan, as that was part of the contract that you signed up for when you subsidized the phone. ALSO TO NOTE, if your not on contract and they "see" that you are using the S III, they can at will reinstate the data plan, as it is a "requirement" for devices of this type.
I think a data plan is required on any smartphone. One option is to cancel with AT&T and then sign up on an AT&T prepay plan. The prepay plan doesn't seem to require a data plan, or else they don't seem to be as vigilant at enforcing it. One of my daughters has been using an iPhone and the other has been using a Moto Atrix on an AT&T prepay plan for over a year now without a data plan and no issues.
You can call and demand they take out off. They can't tell you no as long as you have minutes on your plan they can't charge you anything. Just keep demanding they take it off

I know a data plan is required. If you read your contract, it is most likely stated there also. And online. Any official new phone retailer. In the store. Just about everywhere you may have looked at this phone, with the exception of a current s3 users left or right hand, states you have to have a qualifying data plan with all post paid accounts. Pre paid is different.
I'm an AT&T employee. As stated, you can request the plan be removed only if you're switching to a non-smartphone. You can't just go back to using the smartphone, though. If the billing system sees a smartphone in use (your device broadcasts its IMEI on every call) without an appropriate data plan, one will get automatically added to the account, and contract status doesn't matter. An SMS will be sent notifying of the change.

the only workaround that I've found that works is to stick your sim in another phone (basic) use that and go to a store and have them update that. turn on your smartphone without sim in it and then go to mobile section and turn off data or remove APN altogether. Once that is done, put sim card back in and just never turn that back on. Did a test with a personal phone and it never registered with the system, ran it for like 4 months that way (on a personal plan) before I decided being restricted to Wi-Fi was easier said than done. Don't know if they've patched that or not, this was about a year ago, but hopefully it helps

Hello fellow employee!
That's an interesting trick, but I don't think it would work anymore. I've seen the system add packages to suspended lines, which clearly aren't accessing data, just based on the last phone in use.
Thanks! Had to switch sim to a small flip phone...now I use my gs3 as a "tablet"
