My wife's S3 is not rooted, running stock and the latest update...but a lot of times, when group texting with iPhone users, she misses about 1/2 the messages because on her phone there is a "Download" button and the messages never download (get the "Message Not Downloaded" error). She's using GoSMS and I've manually set the APN to http://mms.sprintpcs.com, 68.28.31.7, port 80 as found in another thread, but no luck.
Any suggestions? I have the Note 2 and haven't had this problem at all using GoSMS. Of course, I don't do a ton of group texting, so maybe I just haven't experienced the issue yet. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Sturmie
I am rooted and use handcent sms and I have the same issue. I haven't figured it out yet buy suspect it'sbecause most sms apps treat group messages as mms.

Not true (about only iPhone users being able to respond)...3rd party messaging apps (or possibly updated Android OS releases) have allowed us the same luxury of group texting that iPhone users have...and for the most part, it works well, but occasionally, some "MMS" messages seem to have trouble coming through.

Is there a particular 3rd party messaging app that works better than others for group MMS?

So I have a little trouble with text messaging I cannot seem to resolve. When i send out a text message to a group of people, each the recipients cannot see the others on the list that i sent it to. The only see it as me sending it only to them, therefore there is no reply all.
This is getting on my nerves....anyone have a fix for this?
TIA!

Use GoSMS or Handcent, the stock app doesn't group messaging with MMS. Alternatively, flash AOSP based ROM and the stock app has it built in.

Its a mix....but its doesnt seem to matter. All of them tell me that it all of my texts come to them with their name as the only recipient.
Moreover, I've tried GoSMS....same deal with that.
That's how SMS works. It's not like messenger or group chat. When you send it to multiple people, what your phone does is sends that same message to each of the recipients individually, as if you were just sending it to one person. In short, you're out of luck.
If you're open to spend a little time to fix this annoying problem (I had it, too, trying to group-text between iPhones, Androids, and Windows phones), use GroupMe.
https://groupme.com/
Creates a new number which you all text to and it relays messages: works with anyone phone with SMS. If you want to send pictures, you'll need to use the app.

Really??? That's pretty cool :good:
I have a group message going with 2 iphone friends, a windows phone, and my note 3. Everything works great 90% of the time but sometimes the group mms will get fragmented. For example some messages will come through in a thread that only includes me and 2 of the members or some mms will come through as only for me. However, everyone gets these mms's that get screwed up, just not in the thread they are supposed to be in. We don't know who's phone is causing this but I suspect its the windows phone (Nokia Lumia 521). All the phones are on ATT except the Lumia which is on metro pcs. Has anyone heard of anything like this or have any suggestions to fixing this issue?

Yup, happens with me and my brother.
We have 5 people in the thread and only his texts come through separately. Happened to me with the Note 2 and Note 3
Only fix that worked for me was downloading a third party SMS app(Textra worked well on the Note 2 and fixed the issue.. But Textra doesnt work well with the Note 3) Stock messenger stinks
Maybe Chomp SMS or Go SMS will fix the issue too?

Im on Tmobile and hes on Verizon.
I am the only one having that issue. Honestly, Group MMS has been buggy the past few days for me. My phone is sending out blank messages once in a while. PITA
Textra has just updated their app and its working pretty well with the Note 3 now.
With Textra, I dont have the group mms issue that you and I are/were having.
Try Textra and see what happens
I have issues too, its def my phone as my friends all have iphone 5s except me and it worked perfect with my S4. Out of every 10 group texts I get, I would say 3 of them show as an mms from the separate party that never changes to a group message because its unable to download the mms. I feel this phone was rushed by tmobile to get it out

Make sure you click "Use MMS for Group Chats"
If that doesnt do it, also click "Activate Mobile Data" too.
Settings>MMS Settings>Activate Mobile Data
I have both of them clicked on my phone and it works pretty well. Not as good as it did on my Note 2, but better than the stock messenger.

Thank you. It's disappointing that the stock messaging app is buggy. I'll resort to textra if a custom rom doesn't fix it.

Anyone find a solution for this? I'm in a group chat with 8 people and one of them keeps getting separated. We tried making a new chat and still, and everyone else gets his just fine. This also happened with two different group chats with completely other people.
It seems that in every group chat, one person gets left out. Happens on any chat client I use.
Sorry for the bump, only thread I've found that's spot on with my issue.
Bumping again in hopes of an answer because I too am having a problem conducting group messaging.
My Note 3, two Galaxy S3s and an iPhone 5, but we discovered today that it is originating with me. I checked the message details on all the messages I tried to send through group messaging and found something odd. When I start or respond to a group message, MY messages always go out with "unknown" in the "To" field and all the receipients are "CC'd", so when they reply to my message, it comes back only to me as an individual message. Everyone else's messages that DO show up in the group message on my phone all have everyone in the "To" field. Everyone checked their phones and all group messages that they send have everyone listed in the "To" field. I am the ONLY one whose messages go out with "unknown" in the "To" field and all receipients in the "CC" field. I can remove everyone's name and add them again before I send and it STILL goes out like that. And I can't figure out a setting or anything that stops my messages from even having a "CC" field.
So my Note 3 is junking up our group messaging and it has GOT to be a Note 3 issue originating with Samsung because I'm on Verizon and I see others posting here are on other networks.
It's probably some app I disabled that has to be enabled for group messaging to work on my phone. I say that because I kept getting an error message when trying to access my stock email app for my Exchange email whenever I had a new email after I disabled the My Magazine app. Once I re-enabled it, the error messages stopped. (Found that fix elsewhere on this forum :good
It had been a long time issue with the android not able to receive group messages even with group message setting enabled (only send to multiple recipients and to receive under multiple threads).
I migrated from DanDroid 4.1.2 to Sutan ROM 4.3 and I was able to send & to receive group messages from multiple people under ONE thread. I had been tried to find a method for group messaging under 1 threads, but it wasn't very successful.
I really don't like third party apps as much either. What are you experience with group messaging with the new 4.3 update?
I use the stockmod ROM(November build) and it works just fine.
Although if you use Tablet Talk, some of your texts will come out blank(not all, some) when you send a message through a tablet. It was flawless on AOSP but it is what it is.
If you don't use Tablet Talk, disregard the 2nd part.

anyone else noticing this?
it does matter that it was sent from an iPhone. think of it like a bulk email sent to you, if you click reply it replies to all that iPhone originally sent to. the easiest way is to just start a new thread, so go to your Messaging app, click new, and write that person.

so, are you saying that the "group message" check box in my txt msg application will only work for txt messages sent from an android phone (and maybe windows phone?)
or perhaps that checkbox is just not working as intended?

group message and multimedia messages are two different things. group message sends multiple sms to multiple people, and when you respond checking the box it will reply to that same group of people in the sms. when you send an mms (iphones way of handling group texts) its all contacts included in one mms (email). mms are emails, thats why you have things like attachments. it's also why if you email [email protected] youll be able to email your phone directly as an mms text.
so you replied all to all: 1 of your contacts, that 1 contact being a group mms sent from that iphone.
yes it will be different getting a message from a blackberry or windows or android phone. you can actually turn a group sms into an mms group by attaching a pic to it or anything else to it.
dont forget if they dont have data they cant see the mms tho.

My wife and I have been having issues with group texting since we got these phones. What usually happens is she'll receive a MMS and it won't download. I'm coming from a Nexus 6 and she from an HTC One M8, but for some reason it's much worse on her phone than it is on mine. We activated the SIM card that came with the phone. We've tried all the obvious things: resetting APNs, clearing data on the messaging app, using a different app, trying with VoLTE on and off (which I heard worked with the Z3). There's been an open ticket with T-Mobile for two weeks which hasn't really gone anywhere. It seems to happen no matter who the group text originates from. We have both iPhones and Androids in the chat.

The issue is only with group texting.
TWN H815 here. Group texting is not supported on the stock messaging app, so I'm using Google Messenger. It has happened to me a couple of times, after upgrading to v10b. The only way I got the messages to download was to turn off WiFi.
I'm glad you decided to REACH out and ask. At least you don't feel like an OUTSIDER. Maybe its an ANOMALY. I'm not sure but when you figure it out i hope you just tell those who don't want you to fix it, "I'm a just do it!"

Did you get anywhere with this? I've tried stock messenger, hangouts, and now textra. At least in hangouts/stock I'd get the message to download; in textra the message just doesn't come through. It seems to originate from:
1) Group MMS
2) First message in a new group
3) Message was sent from an iPhone
4) Pictures especially, but text seems to do it as well
If these conditions occur, I never get the message. Frustrated that it happens but not sure what to do. H811 on TMobile.

Nope group messaging on my tm g4 is so bad. I've tried almost everything and it still won't download pics
I have this issue occasionally with Hangouts. I will get an mms that did not download from a contact (that should be part of an on-going group message) but it will not download. WiFi or LTE does not seem to matter. When on WiFi, the LTE symbol pops up in the notification bar for a second or so. For me, this only occurs to one out of 30-40 group messages. A minor annoyance, but annoying all the same.
I have not had this problem on any other device when using Hangouts. I had an immediate distaste for the stock message app, so i cannot corroborate that the issue occurs there.
