Works great for me. It does exactly what I would expect of GPS in a phone. It may not get a lock indoors but I'm doubting most phones can, keyword "phones"

Just reboot my phone, fired up the GPS Status app, and got a lock within two seconds. The GPS service on the Gnex has always been great to me. Are you using a stock ROM?

Works great on mine and my wife's GNex. Running stock 4.2.1. Get's a lock in our single floor home too.
I was getting locks in 45s - 1m and then I downloaded fastergps from the market (I'm lazy you can also just edit gps.conf) and my locks are now 10-20s
Be thankful you have GPS that works "sometimes". Some phones don't ever work like the vibrant. And for me, my GPS always worked and locked within 5 second.

Funny you say that because I did have the S And to me there is no difference. Maybe my phone is faulty. And I am no newb. and CM10 had great GPS. Stock does not

Also I meant gps.conf not build.prop haha Just edited my post to fix that.
Most the time my GPS works good, but sometimes not so much. This morning it wasn't locking on and I got tired of waiting so turned on portable hotspot and linked my nexus 7 which locked immediately. Oh well nexus 7 props perfectly between my dash and windshield anyway, so it works excellently as a navigation device.

If the GPS on your GNex doesn't paste your vibrant then your device is faulty. I get locks withing 30sec and i still have a vibrant which gets a lock in about 3 min with accuracy of like 200m and Gnex accuracy within 1-5m

There are fixes that can be done. Putting small amount of solder on the GPS antenna gold contacts and flashing the latest GPS fixes, one of the Vibrant I had actually gets better signal than my Galaxy Nexus as a result, though the Nexus still lock slightly faster. Here is the link to the JellyBean patch for the Vibrant: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33844820
Also update your baseband to the latest version.
I agree.
My previous phone was a Nexus One. I also had a t959 vibrant. My current phone is an i9250. Yes, the i9250 has "working" GPS compared to the Vibrant but it doesn't compare well to my nexus one.
During navigation, the nexus one will show me on the correct side of the road with an arrow pointing in the right direction. The i9250 will often show me on the wrong road (or sometimes neighborhood) and frequently thinks I've wandered off and changed direction.
While sitting at an intersection, my i9250 will frequently think I've suddenly made a u-turn or started driving. This does not happen with the nexus one.
I can not seem to get a fix on the i9250 without a data connection. This was a problem for me recently when I went to canada for 2 days. I can get a fix with or without a data connection on my nexus one. I've been an hour from cell service and could still use the nexus one for directions and google sky.
Overall, the i9250's GPS works poorly enough that I've given up using it for navigation, especially in unfamiliar places. I used my nexus one for navigation anywhere I went. I now just get directions on my i9250 and memorize them.
I did a side-by-side navigation test with my galaxy nexus and a friend's verizon galaxy s iii recently. The galaxy s iii had the same problems that my galaxy nexus has. Maybe it's a problem common to samsung phones?
I REALLY miss the in-call noise cancellation that the nexus one had. The galaxy nexus picks up everything around me. My friend chris has a galaxy nexus as well. It's very difficult to have a conversation with him if we are both in noisy environments. This also bugs me a little extra because the specs for the phone listed dual mic for noise cancellation, but it does not work. The other day my fiancee asked me what that loud ticking was. It took me a second, but it was my car's blinker clicking noise! She said it was loud!
Another friend has had his nexus 4 for a week now. It definitely has working in-call noise cancellation. I want to compare it to my nexus one, but it's a million times better than the i9250. the nexus 4 also generally trounces my i9250 in a dumb time-to-fix gps test. I'll post back here if I get a chance to do a side-by-side navigation test.
All that said, I still love my galaxy nexus. I've had it for exactly one year now and it does not feel old. The GPS is my biggest problem with the Galaxy Nexus, but it still kinda works. Then comes noise cancellation, but that's more a problem for the other end of the line. Then comes the recent liblights bug in 4.2, but that will get fixed. That's all I can complain about.
Well the N4 use both aGPS and GLONASS so it will get better signal, I think there isn't a need of comparison due to that except to know how much it's improved. S3 have GLONASS as well and I didn't have any problem with it.

I think if your location is drastically different from the last known location, the GPS goes all wonky.
Happens to me when i travel into another country, the GPS refuses to lock and i have no data connection. but after a while of trying, it started locking again, but when i come back to my home country, it refuses to lock properly even with data connection, seems like my AGPS is broken.. Should be ok after i flash CM10.1 when it comes out;p

Dude what he said. I can't believe they sold that thing. My very first smart phone. Due to Samsung's pathetic update procedure I will never own a non-nexus and will always modify them. Thanks Samsung?

I've had a couple of different Galaxy Nexuses, the last of which had horrible issues with the GPS. My first one on Verizon was perfect and locked within 3-4 seconds, even indoors. Then my first play store one was similar. I ended up having to RMA that one for screen issues, though, and the replacement was a nightmare. It'd lose the GPS lock on an open road without a building or tree for a mile. I'd say for every 1 minute I used Google Maps, the GPS was only able to lock for 5-6 seconds of it. Navigation was painful at the very least.
TLDR: Consider RMA'ing your phone. This is probably a common issue, Samsung uses flaky GPS chips.
Luckily, my Nexus 4 locks even quicker then the Galaxy Nexus ever did (< 2 seconds) and has no such issues.

Is anyone concerned on whether or not the phone will have issues locking on to your location? I currently have a samsung droid charge and the thing takes minutes to lock (talking 10 to 15 minutes at times). I'm aware samsung has had faulty gps with the first galaxy series as well, but haven't checked on their latest phones recently. Anyone know if the nexus s had any gps problems? Just hoping this phone won't suffer from the same problems as those other phones.
The built in barometer sensor will probably help.
Here's an article published by PocketNow:
Google Confirms Barometer Intent: Faster GPS Locks
According to Morgill, the intended use for the barometer sensor will be speeding-up GPS acquisition. We had mentioned the ability to gauge altitude via barometric pressure, but focused on its use in estimating altitude independently of GPS, saving battery life. Instead, Morgill says, it's to make initial GPS calculations go faster.
While it's easy to keep-up with GPS satellites, an initial lock-on can take a smartphone's GPS receiver a little while to make. Besides needing to wait to receive satellite constellation data from the GPS birds, the receiver needs to solve a complicated set of equations to figure out your location. One of those values it's solving for is your altitude coordinate, and if you already have a pretty good guess what it's near, you can speed up the rest of the equation-solving. Of course, you always could use the sensor for any of the uses we mentioned, given the proper app support, but this GPS-assist looks to be the primary motivation for the sensor's inclusion.

Even better would be to know that it uses the Russian Glonnas system as well as the US GPS sats to give double the number of possible sats to lock to. The Samsung Note uses Glonass and the Apple 4s uses both. Let's hope the Galaxy Nexus does the same.
I am hoping that after more than a year and over thousands of complaints Samsung got their act together and got that damn GPS working like HTC's devices.
The gps lock seems pretty quick judging from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-yWgzoJXMA#t=9m41s

The Galaxy S debacle gave Samsung a black eye they won't soon forget. Whatever the issue was though, it was solved when I got my NS about a week after launch. It locks usually in less than 5 seconds and has only lost signal a few times and has never failed to function for the nearly one year that I've been using it.
Yeah this was the only thing stopping me from pre-ordering the galaxy Nexus.
My Galaxy S Vibrant (T-Mobile) has a though usable GPS, it's complete garbage.
I remember driving down I-5 on my way down to Portland... it kept jumping in between local roads and the actual I-5.....
So I take it that GPS is fairly fast to lock and accurate? (keep in mind I don't use A-GPS since I have very limited Data)
very quick GPS lock and accurate from my attempts so far
Just stood outside in an alleyway between houses and got a lock in under 10 seconds !
Yeah mine has got pretty good GPS performance, although coming from a Galaxy S anything is better.

Has there been any confirmation that galaxy nexus can use GLONASS satellites?
I've had no problems with gps so far.
sent from a galaxy far far away.
tested it right after the buy. i am a geocacher the fix was instant. Much faster than my Desire HD
Droid Charge (my dad and sister has one) can take several minutes or longer. My Motorola Triumph could take 5 minutes out in open area (pathetic)
Nexus, locked within 5s from within a bathroom first time ever using it, down to 10M accuracy.
Needless to say, I am very unhappy that it wasn't instant but I suppose I can live with 5s
Off Topic, I read that the galaxy note uses 3 different GPS systems, US/Russia and something else, so it's able to see about double the sats in the sky - anyone know if nexus is the same way?
Sooooo many topics about faulty Nexii, granted those with problems or criticisms will always be the more vocal group. Just wanted to start a topic for those of us whose phones are doing just fine.
My phone makes calls, sends texts, receives e-mail, and browses the web flawlessly. I'm impressed with the speed and smoothness, and I would like to praise the team at Google/Android Development for such an awesome device. Cheers.
Mine!

bought it from Bell off contract
screen is perfect (even passed the gray shades test perfectly!)
wifi never dropped, reception and call quality is awesome
My GN has been working like a champ since the day I got it back in November. I had the issue with the keyboard lag buy cohort that fixed with the method listed on Droid Life. Live the phone, it's the best one I've owned yet. The display is amazing, I average 12-20 hours of battery life depending on usage and I can't keep myself from wanting to play with it all the time.

So far I've been happy with the phone except for the battery. I expected that however. I use mine a lot. With the extended battery I still suffer a bit.
Signal strength is a bit low at times but i havent had dropped or missed calls...

No issues here. Easily the best phone I ever owned. Wouldn't trade it for anything else.

Forgot to mention I'm on Verizon, but that's not really important.
Glad to see there are more out there who received a trouble-free phone. I just slapped the Extended Battery on it today. I'm charging it up at the moment, so I'm curious to see how long it will last me. I mostly use it for web browsing, texting, playing like 30 minutes worth of games, and a little Navigation and Camera use. I just went a whole week with the regular battery doing the same stuff I just mentioned and I was surprised that by 8 pm I still had about 15-20% battery life left. Keep in mind I do have 4G off the entire time.
Rock on GNex users!
EDIT: Also coming from a Droid X myself. It's lightyears ahead in every way. Such a wonderful device.
My GSM Gnex is working great. No multi touch or reception issue or screen problem. MHL works great and I even got the 40 dollar Motorola Bluetooth keyboard and mouse combo a week ago.

When I first got my phone I had very noticeable banding on my screen. With use though I've seen it decrease and now its almost barely noticeable. At least to me. I don't know if it goes away with use or if its just me getting used to it but even on gray backgrounds like the settings screen and certain websites its almost gone. Other than that the only issues I have are usually just because most roms available are still in development. Nothing to do with the phone itself. Even the battery is more than what I expected and the screen itself just reminded me how much I missed samoled.

Mine is working just fine as well. I got it from Google when they were in our office and have been using it on T-Mobile or the past week with absolutely no issues.
My only gripe is that I did get an extremely small scratch on my screen simply by putting it in my pocket. However, I now have a screen protector installed which makes the scratch 100% invisible so that's neither here nor there.
I have no regrets about switching from my Galaxy S2 to the GNex.
everything is great!
I have to admit I have been a bit miffed at what Verizon has done with the Galaxy Nexus. I think it is a great phone but I think Verizon has stripped allot of what was special about being a nexus from the phone.
Apparently someone from Droid Life feels the same way. Here is their article on Verizon and the GNex
http://www.droid-life.com/2011/12/30/verizon-needs-google-opinion/
What are your thoughts?
This person is also wrong.. they complain about google wallet not being included but it isn't included on the GSM nexus.. it isn't part of AOSP. Also.. the only differences between Verizon and GSM include two semi useful apps that you can remove, a battery cover without Google, and no free tethering. It's not even a big deal.. most of the comments on that article bash the author anyways because he doesn't appear to know anything.

I still think the Galaxy Nexus is the best phone out there. It just seems like it is becoming less of what I thought a Nexus was. Maybe I had the wrong impression of what a Nexus was in the first place. I am no dev, I've just had the feeling it is headed in the wrong direction... slowly
Best phone I have owned.
Compared with the htc hero , desire HD , iPhone 4 , htc sensation and log optinus 3d I have owned.
+ points :
Screen , amazing simply. Colours are bright and vibrant , text and outlines are crisp. Can really tell a difference over the other phones.
Speed. No lagg what so ever , plays gta 3 perfectly whilst listening to music . Can have a little slowness if I am using a heavy live wallpaper.
Honeycomb inspired apps are fantastic. I own a Motorola Xoom which I have been totally impressed with , the music app especially are brilliant , as well as icons and multi task bars. Having it ported over to my mobile has blown my mind.
Battery life : there has been a fair few complaints but as I posted in a battery thread mine will last a day with heavy usage (will include screen shot at the end)
Quality , granted its plastic but it feels like a premium product. Doesn't have the look of the iPhone 4 but the full glass front , no button set up gives the phone a real sleek look. Back plate is flimsy but once its on it feels well built.
Camera: decent picture quality , zero shutter lagg is great . Haven't taken that many photos so I won't comment to much.
Connectivity , GPS and Bluetooth have all worked seamlessly as expected.
Only downsides :
Apps: some are still incompatible which is annoying , its new software so I wouldn't really count this as a issue as it will be fixed.
That's it really , bought this sim free for £529.99. Was unsure and really hoped I wouldn't be disappointed after I had spent that kind of money. I am happy to report that it is the best tech purchase I have made. Well done Samsung & Google , thoroughly impressed
J

that reporter from droid life needs to crawl out from under the rock...he is clueless!
The biggest compromise, imho, had nothing to do with Verizon, but was made by Google to Texas Instruments: the TI OMAP processor. The Samsung-made Exynos processor from the SGS2 is widely viewed as the best smartphone processor on the market, so why did Google force Samsung to compromise with the TI OMAP? Nothing against Texas Instruments (they have great products, by most accounts), but Google should have let Samsung make this phone with its own chips imho.
Yes, I definitely despise Verizon's treating of this phone as the ugly stepchild of its Android lineup (like they also did with the Fascinate), but, hey, we still have a top-shelf Samsung product on a reliable network, and with (not so reliable, but still better than HSPA) LTE to boot. Plus, it seems to me that Verizon's handling of the Gnex (and the Fascinate) is more a knock against Samsung than Google...

What do you mean by that? Subsidies in Europe are way better than the US lol. They often 100% subsidize the phone (even top-tier devices) for only a 2-year contract, and the service still costs 1/2 of what we pay in the US. AND the non-contract options are still amazing.
Don't kid yourself. We have it worse in every way here.

IOS lags....you just don't see it cause of the heavy handed transitions.
Google finally realized it and has worked on their own transitions to mask it in JB as well. JB is faster than ICS but the transitions is what makes it buttery.

I had an iphone 4 for a few months just to see what the hype was about. I didn't get it. Phone is smooth, but jailbreak it and it's a laggy mess. I had to unjailbreak it cause I couldn't stand it. It was such a relief to have my hands back on a good android phone that didn't make me use itunes to control everything I wanted to put on my phone. Before I got my nexus, I used my old evo 3d for a few days. I would even choose that over any iphone that is currently out. Maybe the next iphone will be the bee's knees, but what can it bring that isn't out? Still tied to itunes, no text reflow, and still no way to put downloaded music from your email into your music player list (wtf.) I'll take a small bit of lag in android as a trade off for freedom. Still, i'm no apple hater...it's a good phone for my almost 60 year old parents.
And I'm not sure how this fits in, but I find it hilarious. I help run a couple private training studios. We have 2 owners. I oversee both locations doing a little bit of everything. We have a marketing director. We have 4 managers between both locations. That's 8 people. I have the Nexus. They have 7 iphones. And it has nothing to do with work. And not one of them can give me a real valid reason to have it over an android. The brainwashing is incredible, I'll give Apple that.
I have to be honest. I own both devices. I originally left android because of the fragmentation. Even when I bought the nexus s, I didn't get timely upgrades because it was the 4G (sprint version). Now, I can truly say that Android has caught up and possibly surpassed iOS. Only problem is, that I still finding myself wishing I had certain features from my iPhone on my GNex (GSM!!!! F*** CDMA). For me (remember, I'm only 1 person out of however many billion people there are in the world), I wish my GNex and iPhone would have a mutt baby with the features I like from both.
I love my Nexus, yes, but I also love my iPhone. That's just me.... Then again, I might just be a confused guy... It took me until I was 16 to realize I couldn't be from Boston and like both the Sox and the Yankees... So I chose the Yankees.... lol, just kidding, I bleed Boston!!!!

IOS lags....you just don't see it cause of the heavy handed transitions.
Google finally realized it and has worked on their own transitions to mask it in JB as well. JB is faster than ICS but the transitions is what makes it buttery.

You have no idea what Google did, they increased the framerate, by waking up when you touch the screen, the screen also follows your finger faster, the lag isn't masked like on iOS, its just plain gone, the use vsync to sync the framerate to the screen refresh rate, when switching homescreens keep your finger on the screen and you'll see how much smoother it is that ICS, the transitions are the same speed, they're just smoother, some are faster indeed but still smooth. Not to mention it is hardware accelerated unlike iOS and galaxy s3 which are both mainly pre-rendered frames that's what makes those smooth

How many android devices are out there and how diverse are they ? Don't compare it with apple's ****, why do think that hey try to van android, because iOS is being outclasses, and If they manage to ban android i wont buy an iphone
Sent from my Jelly Beaned GNexus
Only reason I use iTunes is because I can't buy my music on my galaxy nexus using play store because I'm not in america what's the deal with that, yet I can rent movies on play movies, the diversity of android phones has nothing to do with buying songs from the play store, all gsm nexus should get ota updates around same time not months apart, flashing proves the updates work with all gsm gnex's yet the way their updates are passed on to consumer is seriously screwed up, google are their own worst enemy not apple, they need to think about android universally not just US users that get all the features an updates, they will never succeed with that attitude, by the time they do get it right it will be too late.
The lag isn't totally gone, so it's moot to ask.

What's wrong with the current apps???
Play Store has just as many professional Apps as the App Store(this name is [email protected] "app store").
last time I checked, I see a bunch of horrible apps on the iOS App store.

I think I know what he means. Apps that are vibrant and uniform in their look. Android has some great apps out there but their graphics (icons, backgrounds, etc) could use some work. Hence why Google released some templates to make apps in the latest SDK after Google IO

I don't know what people are referring to when they say limited app offerings. Android lags a bit on games and, certainly, tablet apps. Android is on par with iOS when it comes to other apps. As far as the OS itself goes, Android is a far more feature rich system. That is why half of the features Apple "invents" are ripped off from Android. This has gotten more blatant with each iOS release. See the feature list on their two most recent updates as a reference. I use my devices for work and am a scatterbrained person, so I multitask heavily and iOS would not be an option. There was a time Apple had more polish, but those days are long gone. In recent years, Android and Linux, as a whole, have shown that you can be open, easy to use and refined.

I got the GNex unlocked and since day one it has issues with signal/reception. Both on ICS stock, JB (I had to root, haven't got OTA yet) and on CM9.
If i go to battery stats, on average on a typical day i am about 30% of the time without reception in full signal area. This means I am missing a lot of calls and texts arrive like an hour late at times.
I have tried flashing radios and all sorts and it does not help. Also tried the Min Freq -> 700Mhz trick and its not working for me either.
Already had one replacement, new phone has same issues.
Here is the bug on google code http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=28133
I had a nexus one too and it had the power button issue. Seems Google don't do proper quality control on this Nexus line for quick releases. Why am I not surprised that even Google's Vic Gundotra is also running HTC One X and SGS3 phones and not this Nexus flagship device.
I will get rid of this piece of junk on Ebay. A phone that can't be used as a phone - what a joke!
You're speaking for yourself.
I have zero issues with signal, call quality, etc.

Do me a favor pal, flash a custom rom on it and you'll love it. Stock roms usually s*ck
This issue is well known on galaxy nexus phones as there are numerous posts about poor signal in xda for this phone, its not software related its samsungs fault with the hardware of the phone apparently, personally my galaxy nexus has better signal than my iPhone 4 using same network in the same areas. My old Nokia still has perfect 5 bar signal even where nexus an iPhone can only get 1 or 2 bars.

most of the whiners about the Galaxy Nexus issues are Verizon users.
And as you see with this thread, sometimes people just dont know what they're doing.

Personally, I'm on my 3rd Nexus. 1st one wouldn't hold 4G for more than a minute or two, 2nd had a rock solid radio, but wouldn't charge. This one only drops 4G 1 or 2 times a day. I might keep this one, not sure yet.
Bottom line is-keep sending them back until you get a good one. It's easier to leave them stock if you're getting a new phone every 2 to 3 days. Happy hunting.

Signal quality is not the GNex's strongest point. It is a Samsung device, and Samsung phones have lackluster radios. This is a well known fact. Some GNex have better reception than others. Google is not to blame for the poor quality control here. Samsung made the hardware, Google is only responsible for the operating system. One can certainly make an argument that a phone's radio reception should be top priority. If you are in that camp, then you will be much happier with a Motorola.
My Signal is fine on T-Mobile. I guess it doesn't play well with Verizon's network. I wonder if the Unlocked GSM edition just has a better service in general.
I have a unlocked GSM Nexus. Coming from a captivate to a Note and now a Nexus on AT&T, I've noticed that the Nexus can pick up signals much better than my previous two phones. There are certain areas in the building in which I work that would lose signal (no data, phone or text) but no on the Nexus. HOWEVER, I notice in general that the signal strength fluctuates a lot more as well. Full bars to no bars. It also seems to hold on to cell towers more instead of seeking on a better signal. Many times, I would be at zero to 1 bars and a quick airplane mode off/on would get be connected to a better tower quickly.
