I just rooted my fiance's epic 4g/samsung galaxy s2 with Odin (she was/is on FJ12 firmware) and after rooting, I am just wondering how I would go about flashing a new rom onto it. Is it safe to use android recovery to flash a rom with CWM? Just wondering where to go from here. Rooted 3 devices and flashed them but they usually came with CWM. Not sure about android recovery

FJ12 is virgin mobile.
I have no idea if flashing roms for you will be same as flashing for sprint. I have steps listed here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953783 but thats keeping sprint in mind.
Well, I got my rooting from here. Doesn't say anything about flashing a new rom onto it though. :\

Same H/W (just like my MVNO) - just different settings.
Flash as if it's Sprint but keep in mind that MMS will break until you manually correct and things will show as Sprint, not Virgin. Not sure if 4G will need the realm changed or not...

My brother just got a sprint epic. He wants me to root it and flash a custom rom for him. I have been reading as much as I can and I have downloaded the oneclick root version 3. I have also downloaded the midnight rom 4.0 and 4.1 update. I have a quick question before I start. Does the epic modem need to be flashed with an update before flashing this rom?
Yes, either update it with Odin or the EB13 modem. Zip
What if the Epic I bought is already rooted and I want a different rom or stock? Same thing?

Before you do this, You may want to learn the following terms from the Development area...
Odexed/Deodexed
RFS/EXT4
CWM 3/CWM 2.0.5/6
Reading about these will lead to to a lot of the answers you need to successfully flash a ROM to your brothers Epic.
what version firmware do you have....check in the about phone category on it.
i didnt use odin...i used the samsumg update which was very simple and worked well for me...had no problems updating my phone.
you need froyo to use the 1click root method with clockworkmod3 thats why im mentioning it.
the 1 click method was easy...just make sure you have the rom on your sd card so you can flash it....with that rom you get the kernel whic hyou need as well - it makes it easier since it does it in one step.
make sure you dont reboot the phone after you root but flash the rom first, otehrwise your phone iwl lget stuck and you will have to revert it.
I will wait to do anything until I get some details like what the phone currently has on it.
Here is the phone info:
FW 2.1-update 1
Baseband dk28
kernel 2.6.29
build number sph-d700 eclair di18
hw version d700.0.5
So it would be best to update to EB13 and then download the one click method for eb13 found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897612
Then flash the midnight rom?

You do know the person you replied to wasn't the OP, and may not even have a brother at all?
I'm not new to flashing ROMs on my Evo, however your forums here are a little more cryptic. My son rooted his phone and flashed CWM and a Cyan Rom. He would like to return to rooted stock. Can someone point me in the direction of the latest OTA Stock Rooted Rom for the Samsung Galaxy S Epic II 4G? He apparantlly followed some video tutorial yada yad yada. I realize ROMs are probably flashed thru the recovery console, is flashing similar to flashing on an Evo from that point? (Boot to recovery -> work your way to Flash from Zip ...)
Thanks in advance.

Here you go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433101
Instructions are on that page, just make sure you use the full restore, and not the preserve data or you can brick. At the current point we don't have a kernel built from source yet, because of this, you must flash back to stock rooted EL29 via ODIN OC or you will brick. I highly suggest you read my thread in my signature because flashing anything ICS for this phone can be extremely dangerous and will brick your phone if you aren't sure what your doing.
Just to be sure you are looking at the right thread, please go to settings>about phone. Make sure model number is SPH-D710. I only say this cause I haven't heard of a Cyan ROM, and (not trying to be a jerk), most people refer to this phone as the epic 4g touch. You got something weird up there, and there are at least 20 different versions of this phone (galaxy s2).

Yes, that is what I meant by Cyan.
Thanks for the links and tips guys, I will check it out tonight.
Short version is this is the Galaxy 2 from Sprint, the one with the long bastardized name. Took forever to find this forum cause I was looking for something closer in name.
Yes it is the bastardized sprint Samsung galaxy s2. Word to the wise stay on this forum. Any other galaxy s2 forum especially international will have a huge possibility of turning the phone into a nice little paper weight. I have to say thanks for taking the time to find out. We have had a bunch of people come through here with paper weights wondering what happened because they didn't bother to read

Is there a flashable zip or whatever you guys use on the Epic somewhere that I can just copy to the sd card vs going thru ADB etc as in the link from above? The phone is already rooted, I don't want to lose root, just load a stock rooted rom on the phone.
Thanks.

Just read the entire OP twice. It's really simple. It will return you back to stock rooted gingerbread EL29
Edit: just realized its the same link. This is not adb. It's an odin one click package. Basically download the file and press a button and you're done

I would follow the posted thread as.. a.) It is the safest way since lots of people have been bricking their phone via flashes b.) This will return the phone to the stock ROM, but it will remain rooted.
Thanks guys(gals?) I'll be trying this tomorrow!

Ok, reporting back.
First we tried the 'don't overwrite data' option, everything appeared to be ok until the phone rebooted. It sat on the 4G splash screen in a continual restarting state for about ten minutes. We tried flashing that twice. After that we tried flashing the factory restore with root option, that worked just fine.
Thanks again for the input.
Now he'll have to restore all of his desired apps, but that's his problem, since I told him not to root in the first place. LOL.
Cheers.
Don't find out the hard way that the roms in this forum won't work with a sprint galaxy nexus. You will have no cell radio access with them. There is no way currently to get back to stock.
--- Mods please delete this once a fix back to stock has been fixed.

This is pretty common knowledge...but let me ask you this, to flash a custom ROM, you must have a custom recovery...did you nandroid backup before flashing?

Can I root?
I had expected the Verizon ROMs would have incompatible radios, but will the root methods and other recoveries/mods work?
Yes I did but it got wiped on accident while flashing roms. It happens and I am sure there will be a fix soon. But quite a few other people have done this.

That doesn't help because the modem is irrevocably flashed to Verizon's version, and we don't have any Sprint radios to recover yet.
If you did flash a Verizon ROM on your Sprint Galaxy Nexus, flash the TWRP recovery, then place this in your Nandroid backup folder and restore.
When Android boots, update Profile & PRL in the About screen, reboot, and data should be working again!

Roms do not contain radios, so yes it would help.
Umm you can flash a nandroid of stock. But the thing that also breaks this is the kernel.
OK , but still a reflash of the rom (every rom includes a kernel) should set him back to good. Period. Needs a stock rom to flash then will be be fine. This is much ado about nothing.

There will be a separate Dev section just like there is for Verizon and GSM now.
But seriously how would you ever think that a Verizon ROM with no changes would just work on a Sprint GNex?
I see that there is a growing number of people losing their IMEIs and their 4G data service from T-Mobile, as I had the same problem after trying to flash CWM Touch through ROM Manager. After flashing the recovery, I turned of the phone and turned it back on only to receive EDGE speeds. After further research I also realized that my phone has a IMEI of 0. Even after restoring my IMEI through GEEK's method, my data speeds are still EDGE even after flashing complete stock rom through ODIN, data speeds are still EDGE. Just want to know if anyone else had the same issue, after flashing CLOCKWORK Recovery or Clockwork Touch Recovery through ROM Manager.
UPDATE: Would like to know if anyone flash Clockwork TOUCH Recovery through ROM Manager and not the regular clockwork, as I remember when I flashed the regular clockwork first, everything was fine until I paid the 2 bucks and got TOUCH Recovery, is when my IMEI and 4G were lost.
I originally had CWM touch 5.5.0.4 by using the DD method through terminal emulator in order to preserve my binary counter, but then I flashed the standard clock work recovery through ROM manager and then CWM Touch which caused my IMEI and 4G to go bye bye.
I flashed cwm through Rom Manager last week and everything seems to be working fine.

I would like to know this as well. I rooted using the Sprint way and have not flashed one single thing because of the imei issues.
I used that method(sprint) and still have my imei. I've flashed FreeGS3 a bunch of times and a couple of themes without iussue so far.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I used the Sprint method, and pretty much immediately flashed CapRom then redrum's FreeGS3 and Lean build, along with the Adama003 kernel. Then even flashed CM9 and AOKP. All of this was through the Sprint CWM. I finally got ancy and pushed TWRP through terminal emulator(since nobody had issues with losing IMEI with that recovery), so I would feel safe flashing JB AOKP.
I would suggest backing up your IMEI so you don't have to worry about it anymore, push a different recovery, and then go flash crazy! Here is the link to backup/restore: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29514187.
Happy flashing! I'm really digging the new Wicked blue ROM!

I used the sprint cwm & odin...via some video found in this forum that said it won't trip the counter. Lost imei & only edge. The vid did say that it would work for tmo & I read other users posts after they had done it. I didn't do anything else after that, I only wanted it rooted. Not sure what I did wrong and I really want to know.
Curious...what do they do with the phones that are returned by a customer?
You guys can back up your imei now. Its in the development section. There's even a video walkthrough.
I've flashed, backed up, and restored through different ROMs including CM9, CM10, TW roms, and EuroSkank builds...IMEI is still intact.
Used Odin to Flash recovery then used ROM Manager Premium to update to latest CWM.

any help guys?

This thread needs to be renamed as there is no proof at all to what the op said, they lost their IMEI and want some one to blame sadly they try to blame the peeps behind rom manager and cwm touch, the same people who put tons of energy and free time to make every phone better for us.
Please op change the title or mods change it, it is not fair to the devs who work hard to have one person who has 1 post to blame them
This post is a little bit misleading. I'm sure that Kush over at Rom Manager would not appreciate a post that scares people away from using his application. This may have happened to a few people, but to state that you will lose your IMEI when you flash Rom Manager is just not true. I may be wrong, but losing your IMEI probably has a lot to do with not taking the proper steps to correctly flash a ROM.
Omg guyz iz flashed a I9300 ROM and it screwed my phone! But it was probably the CWM! Stay away from CWM guyz!

thanks for the link. for some reason i couldnt find any recoveries when i searched, or at least any singular ones. and the faqs thread never popped up in my searches. your link eventually led me to a recovery that i was able to flash from odin and allow me to update to the newest one.
now i was under the impression that all of CWM recoveries were touch only, and the same with TWRP. im not sure about TWRP, but i know now that CWM has both touch and non touch.
As far as I know TWRP for the SGS3 is Touch only.
