I'm going to be travelling in Europe and I wondered if anyone had ever heard of an app or hack or anything that would act like a "virtual sim card."
Basically, it would be cool if my phone could think it had one SIM in there, and then at the touch of a button, if it could think it had another. I'm planning on taking my T-Mobile US SIM to Europe to use WiFi calling from there to be able to talk/send and receive SMS for free from people in the US on my US number. When I'm not in a WiFi area, I'd like to be able to switch to a prepaid SIM that I'll purchase in Europe for data access when I'm out and about (and maybe some text/call abilities with a local number would be nice so I could communicate with friends in Europe).
If there's no way to do this with Android I'll probably just purchase a second smartphone and carry one with my T-Mobile SIM and the other with a European prepaid SIM (and that way I could make a WiFi hotspot so I'm always on WiFi calling).
Any suggestions? Has anyone ever heard of something like this? LIke some app that can "remember" a SIM that is inserted into the phone and then make the phone think that SIM is there when it's actually not? Something to make SIM switching a lot easier, or even something that could switch to the Euro SIM once every 10 minutes or so even when I'm on WiFi to check for new messages on the European number, then go back to the T-Mobile number and turn off all mobile radios so it can connect to WiFi calling.
I would also like this. I hate carrying two phones with me. My work phone has only voice. I would like to have my nexus 4 use my work Sim for voice and personal sim for data at same time.
If not then to be able to switch between them so one is active at a time would be cool.. I bet with a rooted and custom build of android this would be possible. But it is beyond my capabilities.

How about a sim unlock instead? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2023709

closest to that is a multiple sim, sim card i have no clue how to get or use them though and you might as well just unlock your phone anyway unless you need to do this without changing the physical sim but you may have to anyway with a multiple sim (probably turn it over or something)

Bought a dual sim adaptor from ebay for 6 quid.20th edition magic sim where you don't cut the sim.working fine...able to access stk menu, but only works if you change network settings to gsm only.will not work on edge or other speeds.but at least it works! Only thing that's a pain is every time I switch sims I have tof keep putting password in for google mail.if you download the app multi sim from market you can set up a little icon for each specific sim number so you know whatnumber is being used.
Might see if I can find adaptor that uses other speeds but not paying silly money.

Hello,
I am very interested in a dual sim adaptor. Can you please post a link to the vendor
P.S Has anybody tried this :
Dual sim card 26th-B 3G dual sim, they claim that it works with 3G also
Great stuff keep us informed, so you don't have to reboot the phone to switch and it fits under the battery?

it is working great with umts. no rebooting. perfect stuff
I really don't know if i feel like cutting!!!! my sim card to pieces
Besides - how will wavesecure act to this changing sim all the time ?
Smirge
Wave secure works fine.you need to add the 2nd number to your safe numbers.I have it installed on my phone.you don't need to reset phone to switch numbers.just click on the sim number you want to be live.
As I stated g works at moment.need to find one that works with hpsda etc.will post link later to one I purchased.
Its the one where you don't need to cut sim so all good.

have just ordered the hpsda compatible sim adaptor today. unfortunately will have to cut sims but not such bad thing- will let you know how i get on
just received my new dual sim adaptor

and it rewuires you to cut the sims, very easy as you get a template.
It works- both sims work with Hpsda,3g etc- full internet and the usual fast speeds -unlike the previous adaptor i tried which would ionly allow gprs.
You can switch via the sim tool -which doesnt restart the phone-takes about 12 seconds to switch numbers- works great with wave-secure
Can anyone who has a dual sim working with 3G please confirm, and link to a source. I've tried these before and never had a satisfactory experience. I'd try them again, but want to be sure that they are fully working (for phone and data) before spending even more money on an imperfect solution.
I don't mind cutting SIM's as I have a press tool that does it cleanly - as long as that wont damage current sims. Will my old tool work with current sims? I'm assuming that the footprint and location of the chip hasn't changed in current generation sims?
Also, is it possible to log into one gmail account with one sim, and another with the other sim?
i have just confirmed -see above!
with link also...as advised earlier hpsda works,3g works, everything full internet works.
You have to enter password again for Google market- when you switch. but no other problems.
using both vodafone monthly contracts in the uk.
Also works on my n900 also bonus
-deleted- (didn't see the new page)
I'm certain the answer is no, but I take it this doesn't allow you to recieve calls on both numbers at all times? In other words, the only thing this avoids is having to turn off the phone to swap sims - there are no other advantages?
A long shot really - I get sick of carrying around two phones (One is corporate, the other personal)
yep one phone number at a time..still better than carrying 2 phones though.
No problem with messages either- it seems to save messages from both sims.
not happy about the £36 for unit ,but glad it works
Any one get a dual sim working for desire on 3uk hsdpa speed

First of all thank you for sharing with us your findings.
Now here is the scenario: I have a voice only (as in no data plan) SIM and a data only SIM (from a USB stick). I have tested the data SIM, it works just fine in my Desire with the correct APN settings, of course I can't make any calls with it.
Question: would it be possible to use a Dual-SIM adapter so that calls are made from one card and data (APN settings) are from the other SIM? I mean use them SIMULTANEOUSLY without switching from one SIM to the other.
P.S. It's more of an "academic" interest for me as I do have a data plan but since data only SIMs are now free on some networks (RDS in Romania) it would be a nice alternative.
nope it would still need to be switched in order to use other sim data. you can only use 1 sim at a time
So I'm planning on getting an unlocked SG3 but it's originally from t-mobile and I currently have AT&T. Will this work? I'm not planning on getting the expensive data plans though... But I heard that AT&T wouldn't be able to read the phone because it's not an AT&T phone.
Also I have a SIM card. Would I be able to go to AT&T and ask them to transfer my contact/info from my SIM to a microSIM free? Some people have said that they simply want to get a microSIM and said that they have an adapter to make it a regular SIM card so that they can still use it for their "dumbphone."
P.S. I don't know anything about networks or phone details since I'm not knowledgable about the hardware and whatnot about technology. So please keep the explanations as simple as possible. Step by step processes would be nice!

Yes you can fully use the T-Mobile version on att and get H+ speeds. Not sure about data plan... I know that worked for international version though.
Just store your contacts on your Google account and you can sync your contacts to any phone in a minute. No need to store by Sim. Yes there are microSIM adapters, but I don't like them as they sometimes mess up the prongs that read the SIM.
The only thing you won't get is lte speeds but h+ is more than sufficient.

I can confirm that as I am using a T-Mobile sg3 on at&t whilst typing this. The only problem I had was the mobile data wouldn't work at first and my local store changed one character of my imei and it started to work. There are other APN settings that work too.

A really close friend of mine has the Galaxy S II (T-mobile) and is on Walmart's Family Mobile plan. It does come with WiFi Calling, but it says "Invalid SIM Card ERO5".
From what I remember, Family-Mobile runs through T-mobile's network and WiFi Calling does not cost T-mobile anything to provide us with Wi-Fi Calling. Any insights or solutions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Your sim card must be of a certain kind to allow the WiFi calling feature to work. For example, if a T-Mobile customer bought the s2 when it came out in 2011 and had an old/incompatible sim card, they would have to activate the new sim card that came with the purchased phone in order to be able to use the WiFi calling feature.
So a reasonable conclusion would be that the sim card you have currently in your device is NOT compatible. Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics, such as the name or kind of sim card you need, if u were to ask customer service for one. A description of your issue should suffice to let them know what it is that you need.
Hope I'm clear. Good luck.

This is correct though the newer SIMs have been out since the first Samsung galaxy (vibrant) hit tmobile. I will say sometimes when I used to use ics ROM with Wi-Fi calling that some times it would throw an error and I would have to restart to get it running. You also need to usually login to the customer portal or call customer service and set the E911 address before it fully enables on the phone.
Wi-Fi calling is not that great, plenty of lag and other issues that make the call quality pretty bad even on great internet connections.
Especially with tmobile doing the $50 everything unlimited with no contact plan (and similar plans for contract phones), it's worth just going that way (tmobile even accepts customers with pretty bad credit so don't let that stop you).
If you want to stay with Wallys World for whatever reason I bet they also have a similar deal.

Hello, I am a former Family Mobile service user and i am sorry to inform you that Family Mobile does not offer WiFi calling.
I had a Galaxy S 4G with wifi calling, and when I upgraded to the T989 a couple months ago, wifi calling wouldn't work with my sim card (though everything else worked). I went to the Tmo store and they gave me a new SIM for free, and now everything works.
So if FM does support wifi calling, you may just need a newer sim card.
and wifi calling works great for me. clear, and no echo. It's actually better than every other voip app I tried on the market. I'm on unlimited, but I have a very weak signal at home, and therefore must use wifi calling
I have WFMobile and it seems to keep ER05 on my phone beeps and rings it's annoying. I have WiFi calling turned off. I don't know how to get away from it.
Many retail mobiles have "Wifi Calling" function but not any menu entry to enable , There is a APP can check the hidden function and enable it if can use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.widget7.wifi.calling
But it works perfectly with another phone, BTW my phones unlocked and i was trying out my friends sim because he has a 25$ unlimited test talk and data plan and im going on the same thing but his sim card says out of service on my phone

so
What kind of band issue, i got the s2 x and the carrier sim was mobilicity and apparently my phone supports their 3g aws 1700 band right, but for some reason it says out of service, but all the apns show mobilicity and i can see the phone number of the sim so i know the sim is detected but I'm not getting a signal whatsoever
I have been under the impression for a long time that Verizon phones are unlocked, and had a tech tell me this - contracts stay in effect, but phones are free to come and go. So I took my N7 (for which I pd full retail, no contract) to a prepaid carrier and was able to use it with their SIM for a couple of weeks. It took help from a tech to configure the APN settings, but things worked fine. I did get a constant message in the status bar: not a Verizon SIM. Today the phone will not work, even though it shows many 4G bars, and says: No SIM or SIM not recognized. This message pops up every time I try to dial. I called the prepaid carrier and they said they are sure that Verizon has locked the phone and I should call them to unlock it. (Right!)
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but this happened right after I ordered a cell extender which requires the purchase of its own SIM. At first I thought there must be some confusion involved with this, but tech said he was sure it was a Verizon lock. Any ideas or information? Thanks!
Yes, the Verizon N7 is carrier unlocked; however, this isn't necessarily a prerequisite to using a pre-paid carrier's service if they're already using the same CDMA frequencies (in which case, their most likely just "leasing" their service from Verizon and reselling it as their own - these companies are called MVNO's (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) and there are plenty of them out there).
What I think is most likely happening is that Verizon is temporarily deactivating your SIM card, as if it were a Verizon SIM, due to the fact that you're still using the Verizon Note7 firmware. You have a couple options here:
If you have another phone, and another SIM card, you can do like the rest of us are doing and reactivate the other phone with the other SIM and then pop it into your N7. This will restore service to your Note7 and release the "hold" on the previous SIM, so that you can repeat the process with that card next time Verizon does one of their sweeps (appears to be a weekly event). A pain in the ass? Yes. But, after doing this a few times, I've gotten the process down to about 5 minutes. I just need to make sure I have my spare phone (a Verizon Note 4) nearby wherever I am.
Because the N7 is carrier unlocked and is capable of operating on either CDMA networks (Verizon & Sprint) or GSM networks (T-Mobile & AT&T), you can flash another carrier's firmware (like T-Mobile) and use their pre-paid service, or the pre-paid service of a MVNO that operates on GSM (like Simple Mobile). I use T-Mobile as an example because I know that they are not... yet... disabling SIM Cards (temporary or otherwise), but I can't say, with certainty, that the other two are not either. I do know that all of them have pushed firmware updates to permanently disable the ability to charge the Note7, so, if you go this route, you want to make sure you flash the firmware released circa mid-late October and then do whatever is necessary to block all subsequent updates.
Hope this helps,
Matt

Thanks. It does help and that makes sense. What was odd was that I was still able to access internet (not wi-fi, but network showing 4 bars 4G). I got a new SIM today and when I popped it in, same thing. Are you saying I would have to activate the SIM on a second phone (currently N5 still with Verizon while I prepare to leave them) before putting it back in the N7? Just keep switching SIMs back and forth?

It's kind of a crappy solution, and one that I doubt will continue to work forever (or, at least until the N8 is released)... but yeah. That seems to be the only work aground right now.

Yes, and it's a whole crappy situation. I can accept the recall, but not the hotlining by Verizon. I have learned from this I will never buy a phone from a carrier again. Should have bought non-carrier specific directly from Samsung.
