[Q] Button Remapping - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
Hi guys,
Was wondering if anyone knows how to remap the buttons on the Note II. I have looked in a few Galaxy S3 forums to not much help.
What i'm trying to do is have the Menu button for recent apps, and long press it for the menu. Maybe hold down the home key for Google voice search or something as we all know how good S-Voice is. Not.
So any ideas? I found where all the data is in /system/usr/keylayout ... cant see 'recent' or something similar in any of those files but there is various 'HOME' and 'MENU' but im not sure which to change.
Other information
ROM: Android Revolution HD (4.1.1)
GT:N1700
ROOTED
Cheers

Hi, as far as i know the feature to remap the soft keys is only possible with a Custom ROM, but to remap the home button i know how to do that if your interested.
You can remap them with launchers, nova launcher for example.

My home button doesn't take me to the home page.

I haven't tried this myself, but can you swap the key numbers in Generic.kl (/system/usr/keylayout/Generic.kl) to get what you want?
has anyone looked into this yet? I think many people, especially coming from the Gnex would like to remap
Any figure this out yet?
I'd like to make make long pressing back button activate recent apps, and long pressing home button activate the multitask side bar on my Galaxy Note 2.
I know Nova Launcher can do it, but I'm using Go Launcher which I don't think has that feature.

Yes, I also hear Apex can do it too. Problem is I've finally gotten my phone customized the way I like, and Go Launcher is a big part it that. So I don't want to give it up. Was hoping there's another way to remap the buttons.

Thanks for the link. Wanted to comment on that thread and ask for a custom mod for the settings I want, but unfortunately xda won't let me post in development threads because I have less than 10 comments. Kinda annoying.

Could someone develop a app that acts like the back button?
I wish so bad I could have one of these quick keys as the back button but you can't, if there was a app that did that we could just assign that app.... Anyone else wish one could be set as the back button?
+1 i agree. it'd be useful

Is there a way to view all screens?
I remember on all my old phones you could pinch the screen and get little cards of all the other screens and then you could touch one to go directly to that screen. Is there a way to do it on the nexus? I can't get it to work.
Just long-press the home button and there it is!! Edit: It works (also by pinching ), but I realize now that I use ADW EX (custom launcher). In the stock launcher it does not work. Sorry.

Tried that and it does nothing. It will take me to the home screen if im not on it but long pressing does nothing else.

[Q] Power button menu home button?
Just got the SGIII and my GNex is now my 16 month old daughters learning device. We installed a whole bunch of baby stuff but the problem is she keeps hitting the home button and exiting the app. The phone is rooted and I am running the Nova launcher so I could remove all the navbar buttons... But then I won't be able to exit some apps if there isn't a built in exit option... My idea was to add a HOME button to the power button menu. That way I would have a way to exit but my daughter shouldn't be able to figure it out so easily. Does anyone know if this is possible? I'm running Codename Android ROM but I'd change if there was one that would work better. Also, does anyone know how to disable the google search option when you drag your finger up from the bottom... I can't stand it, I always seem to do it by mistake myself. Thanks, Jim
i dont think this is possible..
Ok I figured as much. Any other ideas how I could hide home button but still have access to it via some other means?

How to remap menu key to multitasking
So I am to impatient to wait for the 4.4 update where hopefully we will get the recent apps button to replace the menu key so I did what I could for now. You have to be rooted and have a root file manager. open the file manger and go to system then to usr then to keylayout now open the Generic.kl scroll down to key 139 open as a text file change from "MENU" to "APP_SWTICH" no "" needed save the file and reboot Honestly i did it in the sec_e-pen.kl and sec_keyboard.kl and sec_touchscreen.kl just to be sure. I dont know if it is needed but i did anyway and have had no side affects. Again if this has been posted before feel free to delete or move just i havent seen it so i thought others would want to know:good:
Sounds like a nice little tweak! But doesn't that cause problems with apps that don't have a menu button in the interface?

Click to collapse I suppose it would but so far most apps and games have the pull out menu or some kind of options thats easily accessible through the app itself. i guess since almost all of android expect samsung did away with the menu button most apps dont need you to have one
I love this option, but i wonder if its also possible to map the long press of the menu key to "menu", any ideas?

The xposed module "menu be gone" remaps the menu key to be a recents key, and if you long press it, it is a menu key.
It work but it is "APP_SWITCH", you wrote wrong, beware!!!
Problem with pawitp AOSP 6.0.1 buttons issue
Let me start off by saying that this rom is so amazing. Brought back my galaxy grand duos to life. Huge difference from stock 4.2.2!! One issue I noticed though: Press & hold home button activates recent apps AND now on tap at the same time!

Like I said, press and hold home button is assigned for both recent app switcher AND now on tap. Which makes using now on tap impossible.

Click to collapse Make another 2 post and you'll be able to post/ask in the rom thread. You may have a better answer there than here, as Im not using the rom, so Im not able to provide better solution than this. In cm12.1 under setting, there's button tab which have an option to set the button assign. See if your rom have the same option. Edited: I just found this post, will gibe you the answer for your question. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=63914260
Thanks, that was helpful. AOSP does not have an option to change buttons. I love AOSP simplicity but the menu button is pretty useless on marshmallow. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it function as a recent app switcher instead.
