Hi guys. I recently tried rooting my phone and messed it up pretty bad. I didn't realize the root method was for ICS and not the recently deployed JB update until after I did it. Here's what's going on:
- Can't boot into android. The screen just goes black after the first Samsung logo fades. I do get an AT&T sound afterwards, but it's very distorted.
- I can boot into CWM (which was included with the root?) just fine by holding vol + pwr + home.
Now I've tried a million things from googling around, but I can't seem to find any way to flash my phone (or recover it) back to stock. I know I may get some people saying "an easy google search would show you", but I'm at a complete loss at the moment. Everything seems to be for ODIN + download mode which I can't get to since CWM is installed.
Is there any way I can flash my phone back to stock? Step by step instructions would be great (and where to download firmware).
Thank you!

Download mode and recovery are different. Cwm is recovery, if you can get to recovery, use adb to push a ROM over. If you go to download mode, use Odin to load a tar few package. What phone are you using? D2att or international?
Edit: Nvm the phone type. Use vol- and home combination to get download mode. Vol+ and home for recovery. Go to the stickied thread on how to root and load ROMs. It has an index of TW and AOSP ROMs. All of them prerooted.

How would I go about using adb (I'm apparently clueless)?
I just tried download mode and it worked. How would I use Odin to flash it? I have the stock firmware image (and CM10 which is what I wanted to eventually flash) already downloaded, but I think you need Odin specific zips, right?
EDIT: I just browsed the phone's internal SD and everything is still there, is there a way to just undo what I did in the first place? Or if anything, I still need to backup my IMEI and such from what I've read... I think.

Odin uses tars. Different compression type. If you hook the USB up to the phone while in recovery, it should load adb mode drivers on the comp. Did you have a ROM already on internal? If so, just factory reset, wipe system, load ROM and gapps.

Well, I was just going to root the phone first so I could use Titanium before flashing, so I never ended up putting the ROM on the internal SD.
When I connect the phone when CWM is up, drivers attempt to install but fail.
There are threads literally for every question you have asked I would suggest reading them before ever flashing anything on your phone

Trust me, I have read them. I saw the thread on flashing the international GSM image, but I don't get how I would get back to stock after doing that.
Honestly, I wish I hadn't done it and made a thread before I did anything, but it seems as if curiosity and laziness got me.

Get a tar of the stock ICS firmware. Follow the directions while in download mode to flash. TiBU is useless to freeze anything if you're going to load a ROM anyway. Don't be lazy and just reload apps manually. You should always have a backup plan.
For sh*ts and giggles, go into cwm and just factory reset.
Since adb drivers arent loading for you, I'm not going through that process with you. For future though, you will want adb knowledge. Look it up.

I used this thread to flash back to stock AT&T ICS:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1727443
Didn't work. It still boots into a black screen with a blue LED after the Samsung logo fades. Factory reset also went through, but nothing worked. It just booted into a blank screen again, but with the AT&T sound afterwards.
Sorry for being an idiot, I'm getting kinda desperate here, and I totally realize that this was a bad call on my part without more research.

Sounds like problems Motorola gave grief with on the droids and their flashing tool. I'm looking for a jb tar file. When you used cwm and used Odin, both of them should have removed any times that would cause and issue. Especially since odin of stock fw would be like ghosting an image. Try using the toolkit to lock everything up and go back to stock completely.

Tried using the jb stock image?
http://developer.android.com/tools/help/adb.html for adb use and information. To get the drivers to work, try loading the naked drivers pack. It includes Samsung drivers. Remove all Samsung installed crap from your comp and reboot. Manually install drivers by forcing legacy devices or by telling the computer you have the disk if needed after hooking phone back up.

So after rooting my recent Tmobile GS3 and then attempting to flash the overclock my phone simply wont turn on. The root did fine, and I was able to install setcpu and everything but the second I installed the overclock my phone shut down. Now whenever I attempt to turn my phone it just flashes the Samsung insignia and then it shuts down. I can get to the Downloading screen (by pressing Volume down + power + home) but can I do anything about that? If someone can help me out that would be amazing. Thanks.
Also, I tried flashing a stock rom with Odin and it keeps failing. If anyone knows anything thank you.
Can you get into recovery? Volume up + home + power
If so then flash back to a nandroid backup or to a new rom or whatever.
If recovery wont boot, try again but look for blue text at the top right corner that says "booting recovery" when the sammy logo comes up. I've had it where my recovery wouldnt boot but I saw that for a split second when I tried. If this is the case, get back into download mode and flash the insecure boot + cwm again with Odin. Then you should be able to get into recovery.
If Odin fails to flash, reboot you're computer and try a different USB cable.

If you can get to download mode, then you're probably in good shape.
There are a few tricks that can be found in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1725839
Just make sure when you odin/flash something, you are flashing the correct image for your phone/carrier.

well I thought I'd give it a try using instructions here. and now I'm hosed. I was able to root and install the ALLINONE (Insecure Boot, CWM & Busybox) rebooted, super user showed up in apps etc. I thought everything was fine. the next thing I tried was disable boot up animation and now the phone won't boot up at all.
I can get into the recovery and download screens but whenever I try to restore I get "can't mount /sdcard/"
The toolkit no longer sees my phone either. When it's plugged in and the toolkit is active, it just cycles over and over "samsung" then "Samsung Galaxy SIII" logo then black screen repeat.
The toolkit keeps giving message either "device not found" or "Waiting for USB debugging to be enabled".
download mode/ Odin mode is working- I have downloaded the file:

but haven't been able to get Odin to load it ... I have to be in download mode for that to work right?

I tried that a few times to no avail and gave up. figured out that I needed to unzip the stock rom from t-mobile in order for Odin to recognize and load it. That's where I left it last night. So I'm now back to stock and reloading all my apps and settings.
I'm ok with that, this is my first go at flashing/rooting. My phone works ... and for that I'm breathing a little easier. thanks for your reply!

Much like the others here I rooted my T-mobile galaxy s3. The root worked fine and all. Then I downloaded this font changer app (I forget the name but it required a root) I go on to select a font then I go on to reboot like it said. Then bam, my phone gets stuck on the samsung screen. I then proceeded to use odin to put the stock image back on it (I think that's what it's called) It went through. I also did the factory wipe via the recovery screen. But now my phone would turn on, show "Samsung Galaxy S3," go to a black screen, play the t-mobile jingle, and the only thing that happens is the LED flashes but still nothing on the screen. I've tried virtually everything and I still think there is something else I need to do.
Help please?

The problem is that he may be rooted but doesn't have cwm recovery.
If that's the case then you need to flash cwm recovery first.
I would also try flashing stock rom again or after flashing cwr download nandroid backup of stock rom.

That sounds like a reasonable solution. Can I get a link to the CWM recovery file as well as a guide to it so I don't dig myself into a deeper hole? lol
Actually if you're stock recovery, factory reset should wipe everything. Including internal sd, just so you know.
If that doesn't work it'd probably be cleaner to just odin the root66 fw. But if you prefer the other way, you can find recovery files at the top of post 2 in the fw thread. Root66 is at the top of post 1.
I still need to add a few recoveries so if you don't see one you want let me know.

Hey guys,
Was trying to root my stock T-Mobile Galaxy S3, and everything was going fine but after it rebooted from Odin, the screen stayed black, and only the blue LED was pulsing. I assume it has something to do with my phone being on 4.1.1 and the S3 toolkit not liking that. I tried to flash the stock Rom to get it out of this, but now the same thing is still happening. I have tried multiple cache wipes/factory resets and multiple other stock ROMs. I always without fail get the same thing Samsung splash screen/Blue pulsing LED/start up sound and black screen. I'm getting really frustrated and worried. Can anyone help?

That's actually the exact problem I just solved. You would need Odin 3.04 (well that's what I used) and you need to flash root66 like one of the previous posters here said. It recovered my phone AND rooted it. So try that and tell us what happened.

When I try the root66 it fails in odin. I used the root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA one. First, I had toolkit convert it into a .tar. Then I chose option 8 to flash a stock rom. Actualy I don't use toolkit so I might be wrong, but I don't think you need to convert root66 to tar. Just skip the toolkit. Put your phone into download mode, open odin, connect your phone to pc and flash root66. Check root66 thread for some info about unziping it or converting to anything. All info should be in op. If there is nothing about it then flash it as it is. Make sure that you have phone drivers installed and turn off kies.
I hope it helps.

Did the same thing
I did the same thing. I used the toolkit and was distracted by my son which ended up in me skipping over areas I thought I read and missed the part about JellyBean creating soft-brick.. It did install CWM though . Low and behold, I soft-bricked my phone with the pulsing blue LED from HELL. I kept having issues flashing everything, luckily the toolkit DID install CWM for me which was of no help. When I used Odin 3.0.4 it worked flawlessly with the stock rooted t999 rom which I have attached along with Odin 3.0.4.
Here is how to fix your soft-brick with the black screen and blue LED from hell:
1.) Download files attached and EXTRACT > root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.7z AND Odin_3.0.4_Files.zip
2.) Boot into download updates screen by pressing and holding Home Button, Volume Down Button, and Power Button at same time until you boot into downloading updates screen.
3.) Plug in your phone to your pc
4.) Open Odin 3.0.4 make sure Auto Reboot and F . Reset Time are checked
5.) Click the PDA button at the right, select boot-stock-tmobile-sgh-t999
7.) Click the START button.
8.) Repeat Steps 2-4
9.) Click the PDA button at the right, select root66_TMO_T999UVDLJA.tar.md5
10.) Click the START button and you should see it install things you never saw before like BOOT, SYSTEM, MODEM, etc. (not in that order) at the top left where it shows installation progress (that little green rectangle)
I wanted to try an AKOP ROM or two on my completely stock, never rooted Note 2 running the OTA UCALK7 update. I followed the guide here (flash the SU injected stock UCALJ2 image) to root and now my note gets stuck at the Samsung logo. I have tried the following:
Downloaded the completely stock UCALJ2 unrooted image and flashed via ODIN.
Tried flashing both stock and rooted ROMs on another computer using the stock USB cable.
Flashed CWM touch via ODIN after flashing rooted UCALJ2 image, it can boot to CWM but fails miserably most likely to the lack of root.
My guess is it's bricked because sammy closed the root hole in the UCALK7 update and flashing back to rooted UCALJ2 isn't enough to bypass the patched exploit. Is there an ODIN flashable complete UCALK7 image that I can try (I've looked to no end, all I can find are rooted zips flashable via CWM) or am I really up the creek?
Pull the battery.
Hold the Center Home Button + Vol Down + Power
Slide the battery in.
If you do this right you can get into odin before the Samsung logo. I just had the same problem because I flashed the wrong recovery. It worked for me.

Thanks but I can get into Odin and flash the stock ROM just fine. It then reboots and gets stuck at the Samsung logo.

Thanks - I actually figured that part out since my second post. The phone boots after the factory reset however I don't get phone/data service. I've since tried flashing the two AT&T modems I could find, atti317ucalj2modemfixed.zip and ATT K7 Modem - Baseband.zip. Neither resolve the issue.

Thanks but I can't even enter the network configuration settings - it tells me to insert a SIM. My SIM is in the phone.
I'm having other problems too which I think are partition related. Apps are acting funny, saying there isn't space on the phone (dropbox can't download anything, etc). I'm trying to get TriangleAway installed so I can just RMA it but I can't even download it to my phone. Also a CWM fix permissions fails even though I grant it root access.
It's really simple..download firmware from Sammobile.com flash it in Odin.. u might get stuck on the Samsung screen, if that happens factory reset. Make sure your downloading right file...u r now messing with Odin and it doesn't forgive

I know what you're saying, I'm definitely using the right file and process. I'm a pretty seasoned veteran when it comes to rooting/odin/RSD/fastboot, etc. I've run custom ROMs on dozens of phones since the G1. What's happening to me is apparently not a common failure with the note 2 or GS3. Is there a PIT file available for the AT&T Note 2? I see one for the Verizon Note 2 but I wouldn't dare try to flash that.
There is a pit file around but I really don't think it's that.
And also just checking don't mean to insult ur intelligence but if u are using Odin it will be a .tar, if it's a recovery its I .zip

Yeah, it's a tar file I'm flashing through Odin, got it from SamsungUpdates: Samsung-Updates.com-SGH-I317_ATT_1_20121005095854_bpaaavv07o.
I also tried flashing the stock ROM in deodex'd zip form after I got a custom recovery on there, still no dice. The non-functioning modem and lack of proper root/storage affects both Sammy and CM/AKOP based ROMs. I don't know about the modem part but I've seen weird things like this when the NAND starts going bad and things written to it don't "stick." I don't think that's the case here since it's only on its 4th or 5th flash. More than likely the latter problem is a file system issue. I have no idea about the radio.
I'm going to try and exchange it tomorrow. At least I got the flash count cleared and I'm back on a stock ROM (with the same problems).
Can someone please help me. I recently tried flashing a ROM that used aroma. I followed OP install instructions and in the middle of selecting options in aroma, aroma froze. I battery pulled and now it when i try booting into recovery, all it does is show the Team Win logo (I'm on the latest TWRP) then the screen turns black and attempts to reboot the system. But there is no system so it gets stuck on the SAMSUNG GALAXY SIII screen.I was on CM10.1 and it is stuck on the boot image with the CM guy. Someone please help

When booting, there are three options: System (regular boot), Recovery, and Download.
If two aren't working, try the third. Using Download Mode and Odin, you can reflash the recovery. Just follow the Rooting Guide. Hope you gt it fixed.

In my opinion, Hard Bricking is when the phone doesn't respond at all. Most people even say that the charging light is the only thing that will turn on. Since OP was able to boot up and at least see the TWRP boot screen, it definitely wasn't a brick. Since he was getting something other than a blank screen, not all hope was lost.
Okay well Odin kept showing fail. I followed the intructions exactly, but it always showed fail. Any ideas?

Ah, sorry you're gonna have to get it off there, it interferes with ODIN :\
If all else fails, you can attempt to do a full wipe by using Odin to install a Stock TW Rom. I think there's a stickied guide around here somewhere with a fairly recent stock rom strictly for Odin. This will wipe everything on your phone but will leave your external SD untouched. Others have mentioned Kies, which I have never used so I have little that I can say about it.
Also, for future reference, there are two types of bricks: a soft brick and a hard brick. A hard brick is the one with a more concrete definition being that your phone/electronic device is just an expensive paperweight as the hardware/in-depth(wrong word but you get the meaning) software has been corrupted so much that the phone does nothing. This is most commonly seen with messed up boot managers due to the wrong rom being downloaded. A soft brick, on the other hand, is where a phone fails to operate but there is a chance for it to be recovered. This one is much more common and is what you are experiencing. It's off topic but yeah lol. Good luck with your phone.

Failed multiple times
Finally fixed it. Used sextape's Odin mc3 leak "nodata" rooted. Worked perfectly
So last night I upgraded to 4.3 from stock 4.1.2 through OTA. The phone boots, but I get the message "Unfortunately, S Suggest has stopped" and when I close that dialog, it pops up again almost instantly. If I am sneaky, I can get past the lock-screen, but that is it. It also spontaneously restarts.
Getting past the lockscreen reveals that not only is S Suggest continually crashing, but many other programs are as well. I didn't want to try anything to fix this without first getting some advice for fear I'd make it worse.
When I had 4.0.4, this phone was rooted. I lost root through the 4.1.2 update. CPU tuner continued to work after the 4.1 update, so I never bothered to re-root. Could this be causing an issue with 4.3?
Have you tried using Odin to reflash the stock ROM to fix the issue?

DO NOT DO THIS... Unless you want a brick. Once you are on 4.3 bootloaders you're stuck there. Any attempt to Odin will result in a hard brick (which can be recovered via SD card now)
You can flash any rom you want to via custom recovery as long as it doesn't modify the bootloader it is OK. But do not even think about using Odin.

First off, thank you for the reply.
I have only ever flashed roms via Odin and honestly have no idea what custom recovery means. Is that something I should have set up beforehand? If this is fixable, could you point me to some info on how to do this?
I was hoping that the solution would be as simple as a factory reset, but I guess this is not the case?

Yes a factory reset should do the trick. Don't flash anything just boot into recovery and factory reset. Sometimes these problems occur after firmware updates especially if you were rooted previously.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using Tapatalk
If you're still having issues after a factory reset do a search for how to install custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) I personally prefer TWRP some prefer CWM. So you can flash a rom only without a bootloader. I can link you to the rom I am running now if you need me to. It is very stable and I can't find anything wrong with it as of right now.
But be warned if you are under warranty you will void your warranty by doing so and no amount of using triangle away will keep Samsung from knowing that you voided your warranty.

Ok, I tried a factory reset. It boots to the welcome screen but it is unresponsive and restarts after ~20 seconds. When it restarts it gets stuck on the boot animation. The factory reset is the only thing I have done to the phone since these issues began, is there something else I should have done?

Not entirely sure I understand the process here.
-I need to flash TWRP through Odin, though I thought you said to absolutely not use Odin?
-Then I flash SuperSU and KnoxRemover somehow?
-But then I have to access the play store? Will I even be able to do this? Or is this part optional for what I want?
-I have no idea what I'm suppose to do with the second link. Do I have to flash a bootloader, kernel, radio, and rom separately?
I feel like an idiot for not understanding this.

Ok on that note I do need to elaborate, Odin is only bad if you are trying to flash back to something prior to 4.3 because all the odin .tar.md5 files contain a boot loader, and the bootloader is the killer of these phones after the 4.3 upgrade.
* flash TWRP with Odin (that is safe)
* Dont worry with the SuperSU and KnoxRemover at this point right now Unless you want root access(but wait till after you get the ROM to boot again.)
* You will then need the ROM flash it in TWRP, wipe the dalvik and cache, then reboot the system
If you have any further Questions feel free to ask

Ok so I was using 3.07, I tried 3.09 with CWM and TWRP and had the same results as before. Using the toolkit (which doesn't officially support 4.3--not sure if that's important) I get the message "waiting for USB debugging to be enabled", and of course I can't enable this.

I'm going to have to sit back and wait for someone else to chime in on this one?
Maybe you can try to flash the Odin .Tar again and see if maybe it will boot. I read somewhere tonight that some people are having to flash some things more than one time to get them to work right.
It probably took my phone 5 minutes to boot after I recovered it. I really thought I hadn't fixed it then it just booted. So it might just take longer than you expect?
I will try to help if I can think of anything thing else to try but as of now I am out of ideas.
