[Q] Everything to know about Sandisk 64 GB microSD card. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I should be getting one today so for right now I'm just asking questions to be prepared for when I do get it. What should I know about it?, What should I format it in?, I heard you can't have apps on it, is that true?, etc.

I just got a 64 GB sdxc card last week. I'm running PA with a CM10 base, which doesn't support exFAT. So I've had to format it to FAT. It does work like a charm though.

It should come formatted as exFat, if you intend to use the card on Touchwiz based Rom's and Windows XP+ operating systems, that will be fine. If you want greater compatibility or intend to run CM10, you need to reformat with FAT32. The only real downside with FAT32 is that the max file size is 4GB. I highly suggest using the SD Card formatter. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
Enjoi the new card.

I would recommend sending it back. Formatting a 64 GB micro SD card was a bit useless to me as it's performance was awful and functionality was lost.
Its like buying a Ferrari and putting a ford focus engine in it. Do not waste your time formatting it to FAT32.

Any proof of this? I don't believe there is any appreciable performance difference between FAT32 and exFAT. Again, really the only functionality LOST from going from exFAT to FAT32 is the 4GB file size limitation. I can't remember the last time I came across a file that size. You do gain compatibility with almost every modern OS and almost all embedded devices (cameras, printers, etc etc) by going to FAT32 however.

Yes there is proof all over the internet. This is the first thing that came up when I went to Google. http://www.differencebetween.net/technology/software-technology/difference-between-exfat-and-fat32/
Having a 64 GB micro SD card formatted to FAT32 will be a degradation of overall performance. FAT32 is not optimized for large disks and read write speeds are effected because of block sized on the disk and fragmentation of files. If you don't believe me, just go buy one and see how it performs.

Even in your link it says very little to the performance differences between the filesystems. Also keep in mind FAT32 was very much widely used with traditional hard disk drives well past 64GB with little issue.
Fragmentation can and does happen with all modern filesystems. Remember when Microsoft touted NTFS to be fragmentation proof? Again, if you look at the link I posted, it has graphs and charts showing little to no significant performance difference between exFAT and FAT32.
Fragmentation is also less of a concern because the card in a SGS3 is strictly an external storage device, not a random read-write access system partiton.
I have 4 of these cars and love the extra space they give me. They have proven to perform at least as well as any 8, 16, or 32 GB card.

Just got it and I don't see why people make this seem like it's so difficult to use. I put the microSD card in the phone and that was it. I started to move some songs from the phones internal storage to the card. I swear I came across so many threads where people acted like you needed some sort of full page tutorial on how to use it. I understand if you're using different ROMs but if you're just using the Stock ROM there's like nothing difficult at all.

Hello, so I received my 64gb sd card also and everything seemed to work perfectly. I had backed up my old 16 gb card and copied songs and pictures to the new one.
Then it started to act up on me. I would be listening to music and after a while my phone can't read the sd card anymore. It would tell me that the music file was not the right format. I also checked the sd card with the file browser and it shows nothing on the card.
I have read that people have trouble getting the phone to read the sd card from the get go saying that it's corrupted but I don't have that problem. Mine reads fine but then stops. I have it as exFat and also have formatted through the phone but no luck. Would formatting it to FAT32 fix the problem?

So far I haven't experienced any problems and hopefully it will stay that way.

I had just went thru this with a new 64GB msd card and fubar'd it beyond belief. I tried putting the card into my PC and it said the card was corrupted, formatting it would not work/fix it ~ in short it was a PITA.
I exchanged it for another.
Once I got my new card I promptly put in my Galaxy Note (which will tell you that the card is not reconized and needs to be formatted), formatted the card, put my phone into UMS mode and transfered all my files to it. Once that was done I took the card out of my Note and put it into my SGS3. The card no longer has problems going from SGS3 to PC to any other device and I get all my storage space. Problem solved.

Ford Focus engines are pretty good actually. The turbo Focus RS from Europe is pretty ballzy too.
At least they break down wayyyyyyy less than anything from the likes of Ferrari

So this thread has been dead for some time. Sorry for the Jack, but no point in opening a new one since this one has some useful info in it.
Here is my deal. I bought a 64gb SanDisk on Cyber Monday bc of some link that someone put on here. Got a great deal - $38 but it was on back order for flippin ever and I just got it the other day. I have already reformatted it and copied all my crap over to my PC waiting for it to be transfered.
I am running a personal kang of LiquidSmooth RC7 with LeanKernel v1.6 (they are by far the most stable combo for me). The problem is that it will not mount the 64gb card. I always thought it was Kernel dependent, but not so sure about that anymore.
*I have switched to KT's kernel and it doesn't mount it either.
*So just to do some checking, I mounted it in my tablet (Transformer FT101), worked fine.
*Is seen and recognized in my PC.
*The guy that sits next to me at work has a VZW SGS3 (Stock/non-Rooted) and it shows up just fine.
*I flashed Darthstalker (Twiz) and it showed up.
*I flashed Xtremepedia (CM10 base) and it did NOT show up. Tried stock kernel that came with it, LK and KT kernels and all 3 were a no go.
So what I know it that it will work with TWiz (but we all knew that anyways), it will not work (for me at least) with KT or LK kernels. I abhore TWiz ROMs (No offense to anyone but I like AOSP better/ not a big fan of PA or PAC-I already have a tablet).
Here is my question. Is anyone running an AOSP ROM and using a 64gb card? I will be downloading and flashing these this week but wanted a jump on one that someone knows for a fact (meaning they have a 64gb in their phone now) is working.

You can use the 64GB card, you just need to reformat it as FAT32 instead of exFAT. Yes I have a 64GB card now, Yes I've used it with a plain vanilla AOKP/AOSP Rom both in my SGS3 and in my Sensation previously. All worked fine if the card was formatted as FAT32. I highly suggest using the SD Card Association formatter utility. https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ I also like to stick with 32K clusters for Android, works well for me.

my 64GB card was working fine for awhile in my S3, stock and FreeGS3 r6 and r7.
All of a sudden a few days ago it failed to mount. i'm sure FAT32 will work i'm just extremely curious why it stopped.

FYI, here's my reasoning behind the 32K clusters. This bug may or may not still exist in 4.x, but I don't really care, I'd rather avoid the whole thing than to test it out. Call me lazy. Again, the best way I've found to do this is to use the aforementioned formatting utility, it will let you format FAT32 partitions larger than 32GB and let you choose the cluster size.

Pretty Much the Same problem
I am running liquidsmooth RC9 with leankernel 3.0.52 and my D2TMOB refuses to mount my 64gb SanDisk. I flashed the stock rom back the sd card works just fine. Then I flashed back liquidsmooth and formatted the card to fat 32 and it doesn't even recognize the card. When I format it back to exFat it tells me I have a damaged card. Can you someone please point me in the right direction?

I am sorry I won't be too specific but I read somewhere on xda that aosp based roms will not read extFat because it is a proprietary format. So one has to format one's extSDCard to fat 32. The easiest way to do that is downloading the GUIFORMAT software from the following link W W W. ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm. Makd sure you fixed the typos on thatt url... The only way I can post a link. Once you format it to fat 32 and you are done. Just insert the sd card on your phone, mount it from the storage menu, and start enjoying your extra storage.

I bought this card on black Friday for only $30. I just put it in and it works fine. Sandisk also makes an app which you can see everything on your phone and sd card easily plus ability to transfer files to either one really easy. Highly recommended only of you can get it for a good price. In Canada at best buy etc its like $200 which is insane.

Everything is a guess at this point. Just make sure you buy a retail SanDisk card, not a knockoff...hard to tell these days. And that it's formatted in a specified file format.
I've been using a 64GB on the Galaxy S and SII Skyrocket without problems for some time now. It's just a little slow.

No dice on two separate 64GB SDXC cards in my GSIII, both real deals from Amazon, a solution I read was to format it with a PC to FAT32 but my intention was HD content (i.e. 4GB+) so that was a no go. Now I have two 32GB SDHC cards which work perfectly. YMMV
It is quiet simple. That may be work or not...... I also saw few cases where 64 gb card not work perfectly.
Specs for the Note 2 on Samsung site say it will officially support 64gb sd card where I think most other phones only support 32gb but can still work with 64gb, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Also 128gb would be a really nice match to that quad core and 2gb ram.
Samsung claims the S3 supports 64GB cards formatted as exFAT, but it, in fact, does not. Unless they corrected the issue with the Note 2, you have to format your 64GB card as FAT32. It will still work, but you lose some significant advantages by doing so. As far as I know, Samsung has not acknowledged the issue.
I am using a 64gb SanDisk micro SDXC in my Galaxy Note I as a type. I did have to use a special program to format it into Fat32 though, because my windows 7 PC didn't allow me to format it as Fat32. The name of the program eludes me at the moment, but I will post it again once I remember.
Why woold you ever listen to a sales rep?

This tool is helpful because the quick format is disabled in Windows for anything over 32GB (GUI shows nothing and command prompt only allows complete format, which is really slow).
This tool will save you time, as it allows for quick formatting of 32GB+ MicroSD cards in Windows.

SD card
64 gb card works great.
Good lord, so much poor information in this thread.
Firstly, the S3 DOES work with exFAT formatted 64GB micro SDXC cards, Samsung explicitly added support for exFAT with specific drivers for it (check Supercurios Voodoo Report breakdown for further confirmation). That's why Samsung said that it works with cards up to 64GB in their official announcement, where they have not said that before (even though all their phones work with the 64GB cards when formatted to Fat32).
I have used one in my International S3 for a couple of months since release, and now in my AT&T S3 for something like a month without any issues whatsoever. There are some people who had issues, but it's not clear what the cause is as far as I'm aware.
Even if exFAT support is not offered the Note 2 will work with Fat32-formatted 64GB cards. I have no doubt whatsoever about that - they have worked in every device I've ever tried them in when formatted to Fat32. That's more than a dozen devices now including Symbian handsets, and Android devices running on Froyo and every version of the OS since then: http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/sandisk-64gb-micro-sdxc-cards-confirmed.html. They have been confirmed working in various feature phones even.
If anyone is still in doubt I will post confirmation with my Note II when it comes early October (or earlier if Samsung have their release event here in NZ before then).
Size doesn't matters
In fact size doesn't matters (that's what she said... wait, no... )
I have a 128 GB SDcard perfectly working on my note 1 with an microSD<>SDcard adapter, because FAT32 formatted (I never tried exFAT filesystem, I don't know how classical linux OS handle it)
So I'd say as long as you stick with the old Fat32, it will be alright !
(the system seems to be quite ok with it, except that it takes a while when rebuilding the database for music... Because of the 95+ GB of it.
I know that there is a size limitation in windows when formating in FAT32 system, but this limitation doesn't exist in linux, and I have used Hardrives of 1 TB fat32 formatted under linux and windows without any problems, except this 4GB file size limitation...
Boujou bien!
Couple of questions for 64gb card users:
1. How much time does it it take to fill up the card with music files?
2. How much time does it take for the Note 2 to scan the database?
Thanks in advance

In relation to your second question:
Media scanning (after the initial one) doesn't take too long - much better to use something like PowerAMP that has its own separate library though. For one thing PowerAMP can read tags properly, and secondly you can exclude your music folder from the stock app so the system doesn't index it.

Thanks again man!.
Actually i was settling for Player Pro since it's my idea to keep on using my iTunes generated smart playlists which are based on the last played criteria and rating. Hence Player Pro / iSynchr looked well suited for that task.
Do some research on Power Amp but it's my intention to stay away from any digital sound processing which seems to be Power Amp strongest suit. I'd want it keep the signal path as simple as headphone out + UM3x.
I bought that exact card, hopefully I will get it later today. EXCITED.

I'm looking to buy a Sandisk Ultra either 32gb or 64gb (was looking for 64 but now I'm having second thoughts).
Since 64gb exFAT seems a no-go and FAT32 is very inefficient for such a "large" drive... can I format a 32gb microSD in exFAT and so take advantage of that file system in my Note2? Thans in advance for the answer, I'm buying on Monday and need to make a choice =)
i got just that 64gb card and it works flawless.

does not support, but it works fine if you format the card in the phone. exFAT does not work, however, so you are limited to files < 4gb in size. Kind of defeats the purpose of having such a large microsd card though
UHS1 is simply a speed classification typically used by high power cameras. C10 refers to the minimum write speed of 10mb/s.
This card will work in exfat format for stock GS3, however cwm or twrp recovery only supports fat32 which this card will format to.
I have used this card before so don't be reluctant to to purchase it.
I have been using this exact card since the date I got my GS3 (mid June). It works well with everything and never crashed. It also works with backup and restore within CWM. YMMV though. It is exFAT formatted.
Phone will format it as fat32 and all will be fine. Tested and works well.

I have this exact same card UHS-1 Class 10 (not the old Class 6 one) in exFat format and everything works fine in CWM and in Android.
EDIT: BTW, I formatted the card with SDFormatter on my PC, not on the phone.
S3 doesn't support UHS-1 speed but it does support exFAT format. The card itself came as exFAT, S3 won't even ask you to reformat it as FAT32. Just pop it in and everything works 100%.
Sweet, just nabbed one. I check the price every day also and was just about to post it here...beaten to the punch as usual .

Is there a good way to utilize an "external" sd card to store apps and nandroids? It seems like the GS3 (and maybe just ICS/JB in general) is setup to use the "internal" sd for everything.

Empty 64 GB MicroSD card reduced to 32 GB Space available when empty?

I have a Sandisk 64Gb MicroSDHC card. I've been using it for sometime on Android and. I've used Android to format it but never to partition it. I've also used Android to wipe data on the card. I've formatted it varous times again on Ubuntu.
The card was working fine but today, I decided to format and clear all the data on it. Much to my dismay, after when plugging in the card and formatting it, Windows read it to have only 27.8 GB space even though it was empty. Ubuntu also showed 27.48 GB only.
I've not much problems with the card on Android and Ubuntu but today, this serious problem occured. Just how does a 64GB card reduce to 27.48GB? I've formatted the card to FAT32 and EXT4 multiple times to no avail with GParted.
Previously, some time ago, I've formatted the card to FAT32 and because the computer, I forgot if it was Windows or Ubuntu and because the computer read it as having 30GB space, named the card 32GB Volume or something like that (The name has long since changed to one of my choosing). However, Ubuntu still read the card as having 64GB of space and filling it up with more than 30GB worked just fine.
What happened? How do I resolve this? I need the card to work on both Ubuntu and Android.
This is my card. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005V7WIA2 Based on reviews alone, it seems to be very good quality. I've used the card on Ubuntu, and Motorola Defy (Android), and the Motorola Xoom (Also Android). Both Android and Ubuntu have worked with the card just fine except for one thing Occasionally, when copying files to or from the card, I get an error message. Sorry but I don't recall what the message said.
Also, sorry for this mess of a post. I'll try to reword it once I have the time or overcome my exaggerated grief for this unexpected tragedy.

Use h2testw and check if it might be fake (i.e. actually 32 GB, but re-programmed and re-labeled to say 64 GB).
I got delivery of a new 32 GB thumb drive an hour back and am running the test as I type this. Makes sense to test out all new flash memory purchases as soon as you get them. Lots of fakes going around.
If at all yours turns out to be fake, then you're lucky you got a 32 GB, and not a 2 GB! Hope yours is not such a case!

sd card issues

Hi guys,
Fairly new to the tab s got one just over a wek ago, since have been having issues with anys sd card i put in it.
Firstly i used a scan disk 32gb class 10
, it worked ok but would randomly dissapear, and seemed to have issues withplaying 2k videos, eg being choppy
So i thought i would upgraxe to a 64gb samsung evo class 10 card, been having nothging but issues since .
first i put loads on it then my tablet wouldnt read it at all. I then formatted it to ex fat via windows , same issue .
i then formatted in the tabelt it self. Now it works for about 5 mins then it will show as nothing in there
in storage settings says it mounted and show the correct memory but when trying to use it via various apps
as empty .
Both cards work fine jn windows, and have been brought from officisl websites hence arent fake
Anyone have any idea
Im trying to hold off routing so i can use banking apps , but if that lets me axtually use it !
You could try a factory reset on the tablet to see if that helps. If it doesn't work, then you'll need to exchange the tablet and do a factory reset anyways, so it won't hurt to try that first. I'm using the same samsung card you mention and it's working fine.

I just left it how it came, exFAT.
Android doesn't support exfat- it's a Microsoft format for the most part. Format it as fat32 and it will work. These large size microSDXC cards are coming formatted exfat (which was designed for flash devices in mind) but isn't really supported well.
Use fat32
I just got a 64GB flash drive and played with formats to see if I could use exfat or f2fs but nope. Fat32

I don't think that's entirely true. Some android devices don't support exFAT, but from my experience most do these days. I'm currently using an exFAT card on my Tab S.
ok so i tried exfat and fat32 and both did similar things.
I then tried the same cards inside my microusb to micro sd adapter and they worked fine!
So i took it back to John Lewis, spoke to their technical support who didnt know a fat lot, they kept telling me this tablet
doesnt support that type of media, i then showed them it did by using the microusb adapter, we then tried it in the display unit and worked fine, they werent understanding that sometimes it works in my device and
others it wont.
They kept advising me not to just swop it as the samsung tab s wouldnt do what i wanted it to do (i knew it would) they eventually agreed to give me a full refund, so i did and just swopped it for a nexus 9 as i was torn up between getting the
2 when i brought the tab s.
Short story - i swopped my tab s for nexus 9, happy with it so far compared to the tab s.
Also means i have some tab s cases going space if anyone fancies buying them off me for dirt cheap, got the official case, and cheapo one and some extremeguard protectors etc... drop me a message if your interested. (in the uk )
Thanks for all the help guys
I'm having the same problem with my SM-T807T. Using an 64GB SanDisk formatted FAT32. I had it my nook before and it was fine (works on windows as well as my phone) but randomly stops working in the Tab S.

Funny enough i had the same sd card in my phone (same brand/model/capacity) and that one works fine in the tab. My phone (galaxy note 2) reads both so i swapped them. Card was Team 64GB sdxc
The nexus is a no go for me, no sd card slot is a deal breacker. Plus the tab s screen is also unbeatable. I do a lot of reading and high res graphics so it's ideal for me.
Android, and this tablet support Exfat no problem.
And you'll want exfat if you want to put HD mkv files on your card larger then 4gb (fat32 limit).
When the tablet formats a new sdcard it does so in exfat.
Sorry to hear you went Nexus 9....
After reading this thread I'm starting to think maybe the S series has some micro SD hardware issues...
Mine is a totally different problem and so far i guess it hasn't affected me much i guess...
I have a SanDisk extreme 32 in mine that i used in my Note 3 and Phantom Vision Plus camera... it has worked flawlessly in those other devices... now, while installed in my Galaxy S 10.5 .... when i wake the screen i see a popup sometimes that says something about "SD card detected" ... as if i just inserted one ... but the damn thing has been in there for two weeks!?!?
So far none of the other problems listed here tho... plays all my 2K video files just fine... reads and writes with no problems... really fast as a matter of fact... i don't get it

For sure the Tab S is very picky about which SD cards it uses. When I upgrade from 64 to 128GB I'll definitely be going with a Samsung EVO/Pro or one of the new SanDisk branded cards just to be safe.

Quite right - not at all true. Android absolutely supports exFAT - that's the only format you can use over 32 GB - without using some sort of format utility...and even if that works, you can't store files over 4 GB in size (like my ripped Bluray videos). Android also supports NTFS, but SAMSUNG doesn't appear to.

So why does a 16GB Transcend card pre-formatted as FAT32 work, but a 64GB Samsung EVO ***EDIT _- IT NOW LOOKS AS IF THIS CARD IS A FAKE. The App SD Insight shows it as INVALID. The seller did not quible ; just refunded me! *** that comes pre-formatted as exFAT not work? I have had no end of little troubles, which at the bottom of it all seem to come down to this brand new SD card. The card works fine in my PC, and in a camera. I've no other Android with an SD card, having come from Nexus when the 9 was physically too big.
If I don't unmount the card before rebooting the tablet, it has decided that the card is damaged and will not do anything. When I asked it to format the card, all it did was wipe the file table - it only took a few seconds so it cannot have done anything else.
It comes to something when a Samsung tablet will not play ball with a Samsung micro SD card.

I don't really have an answer for you. I have been using a new 128 GB Sandisk card since day one (I assume it is exFAT, as I just put it in out of the box. I did no formatting or mounting) and I have had no problems whatsoever. Worked perfectly when I first booted and has worked like a champion ever since. I'm not seeing any of these problems.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. How frustrating this is... Since posting I have looked farther afield. There are all sorts of threads across various forums on the internet about SD cards suddenly not working in Samsung devices.
I had similar problems with My SanDisk Ultra 32 Gig card. I took it from my LG GPad 8.3 and deleted everything off it on my PC except my music folder, when I put the card in my Galaxy Tab S 10.5 it showed the card but I could not access my data, after a few reboots it worked for a while but was buggy and would stop working. What did work for me was copying off all my data and letting the tablet format the card, I then copied my data back to the card while it was in the tablet over USB. I have not had any issues since and it has been several weeks.
One of the main reasons for replacing LG G Pad 8.3 with Tab S were SD card unmount issues. Here it goes again. I tried two 64 GB SanDisk cards, formated FAT32 or exFAT, even zeroed out one card... The cards still stop working after heavy load from media scanner or reading large video file. The cards work fine in pc, other devices (S5, iBasso...) and even when connected to Tab S using external card reader and USB host cable.
My other cards (32 and 128 GB) exFat and FAT32 formatted SanDisk work fine in Tab S. So I'm trying to solve the issue by ordering 128 GB Samsung EVO card and hoping for the best...
EDIT: The 128 GB Samsung EVO card indeed fixed my issues - even watching large video file is fine.

I don't think it does format the card. WHen I did that in my tablet, it took a very few seconds - long enough to do a quick format i.e. clear the data area that tells you where files are, but nowhere near long enough to actually format the card. Therefore all it does is leave the card as teh same format it was beofre the command.

[Q] [Micro SD] Anyone having issues mounting a Lexar 32gb?

Hi guys,
I doubt I'm the only one here.
I got my G4 (h812 LMY47D)and im ecstatic about using my micro sd slot (S6 was the main deal breaker paying top dollars for more storage) but now I'm running into issues with my Class 10 micros sd from Lexar, This darn software does not want to mount the thing (tried several format including a full 40 minute format @ fat 32 default allocation).
The G4 detects an SD card but won't mount it. This thing works flawlessly on my old S3 so it has to be software related as using a cheap Kingston 1gb class 4 works fine.
Anyone else running into issues with their sd card?
Thanks for sharing any info or tips.

gonna have to give them a call as their user guide states
WARNING Some memory cards may not be fully compatible with the device. Using an incompatible card may damage the device or the memory card, or corrupt the data stored in it.

FIX
Just taught of leaving what got me to sort this out after playing around... Fun times :good:
After tinkering around with another SD card, the LG device formatted it to FAT16.
I've formatted the sd card using http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html under FAT/Primary
It created a 4gb partition and left it the remaining untouch
Popped the SD on the G4 and it finally mounted the partition
Performed an erase via the phone 2x to make sure and the entire 32gb is now accessible.
Hope that helps others having mounting issues.

I have facing same problems with my 64 GB sandisk sd card on new LG G4
can you explain the procedure to make it work
I've been using an AData 128GB for the last month or so with no problems. I turned the phone on yesterday morning and for whatever reason it went straight to my home screen but locked up and took half a minute or so to unlock and then goes to the lack screen, then I also got a SD Card inserted notification, I figured nothing of it and ignored it. The micro sd runs fine on other devices (formatted as ex-fat) but it causes that issue on startup i mentioned above as long as it's in the phone and it also refuses to mount.
I'm using the SanDisk SDSDQUAN-200G-A4A 200GB ULTRA MICROSDXC UHS-I since 2.5 months ago formatted in exfat with 128k clusters which was what it was out of the package and it works fine.

SanDisk is the only one with something larger than 128GB at this point in time and notice it's 200GB instead of 256GB as size usually doubles in capacity, heard the 56GB was used for something else or maybe not usable. I have a new 200GB card in there now. There is a 512GB card coming soon from Microdia as well.
